My friend accidentally took MF3 update while rooted, update installed successfully but now "custom padlock" is showing every time the phone boots which I believe is preventing him to connect to out corporate MDM.
We've tried factory reset from the OS as well as from stock recovery. Is there any other way to go back to 100% stock?
I surely like to know this as well......

^^ odin wont work because we dont have a MF3 odin package and we cant downgrade to MDL due to the efuse. If he still has residual busybox or su binaries in his /system partition, that would trigger the unlocked bootscreen. In that case, i am afraid he might be stuck till someone figures out how to root MF3 or we get an MF3 ODIN package.
This may or may not work but try installing a superuser app from market and see if yo have root. If yes, then switch to superSU and update binary. Reboot a couple of times and the custom screen should be gone. If not, download a root browser and delete busybox and su binaries and reboot a couple of times.
If none of the above works, take it to att store and play dumb. See if they will reflash bone stock MF3 firmware for you!
Good luck!

How can any one give a solution to an issue without knowing which device the OP is talking about? Not all devices are the same, is it an att i337m which is bootloader unlocked. Odin back to stock, root, and run triangle away, follow the online instructions, it will remove the padlock..
Thanks

It does. As i said before, your only option at this point i think is to try and install supersu and see if you still have functioning root. If yes, you can use triangle away and the custom screen thread in general section to get rid of it and then unroot.
If root is not functional, download any root browser and see if you have busybox or su in /system/bin or /system/xbin (you can view the files without root using root explorer i think). If those files are there then you can not get rid of them at this point. You have to wait for someone to figure out a way to root MF3.
In any case, some ppl around here have had the custom screen come up on a bone stock never rooted phone. So you can go to the att store and say that it just came up and play dumb. (make sure you uninstall all apps that need root) If they check the /system partition for signs of root, you are screwed but if they just go ahead and reflash the full firmware, it will solve your problem.

Seriously, there are lots of people here on XDA with OCD. If seeing that custom unlock every time you have to reboot is bothering you so much then ODIN back to stock, re-root, update supersu binary and don't do anything else to your phone. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if you modify any system files or have a custom recovery then you won't be able to have official status. The custom unlock don't bother me so I could be wrong.

Uhm, well i bricked my phone trying to flash a rom and ODIN'd back to stock, updated to latest firmware, ran motochopper, installed SuperSU (i hate superuser), uninstalled superuser using uninstall master(app in play store), downloaded goo.im in play store, installed openrecovery script, flashed cwm using twrp (the openrecovery script installs it) ans thats what i did. every time i flashed anything i always wiped cache/dalvik. I don't know if you want to flash back to stock, it keeps your data intact! Just a lengthy process. And pretty much what i did. not really sure how i never got the custom, only once.

THIS INFO IS EVERYWHERE! READ MAN. another useless thread.
I would like to update to mf3 but after doing the ota update it reboots to recovery but I now have twrp instead of the required stock recovery...
After doing a lot of searching the only solution I found was to flash the official firmware with odin, but I'm assuming I will have to do a factory reset after this?
Is it possible to replace twrp with the stock recovery without having to do a factory reset or is there another way to get the mf3 update with twrp? (I'd rather not have to re-install all my apps and settings)
I hope my questions make sense its late and I'm tired.

There is always a risk of screwing something up...so read the thread, follow the directions, and decide if you want to take the risk..it's your decision.
Why not just flash a sweet custom rom like omega v9.0? That's the best thing about a custom recovery. It makes it easy to back up your current content and then try out a wide variety of mods and roms.
It's kinda counter productive to flash a stock recovery when you are trying to mod or customize your phone.
Odin is the cats butthole when trying to return to stock. Also, read the poop out of these threads... somebody has done what you want to do already so most things can be resolved with the solutions others have presented.

The OP said he wants to update to MF3. I can't figure out why anyone would willingly do so either, but it is his decision. Personally I would also just flash one of the MF3 ROMs or International updated ROMs and still have the ability to use custom recovery with the benefits (I don't really think there are any) of MF3.

I'm on MF3 right now, but can I use ODIN to go back to AMDL, then root and install a different recovery? It seems that the answer is yes because I saw a thread to download ODIN with AMDL, and that AMDL will allow you to fully root with a custom recovery. Just wanted to confirm before I start down the path of no return. Just want to get the 4.3 Google Edition going on my SGH-1337.

EDIT: Did some more snooping and other threads saying you cannot use ODIN to go back to AMDL. Ugh. Guess I'll have to wait.

The method is for Verizon GS4, can you reconfirm that its working for Spring L720 too?
Thanks
I can confirm that it worked for my Sprint MK2 4.3. I should mention that when I started the instal bat and the command prompt screen popped up telling me to hit any key to continue, nothing happened. I "x'd" out of command prompt and started the install bat again and it worked no problem. I have done this a total of 3 times now. All on Sprint MK2 4.3 and all successful. I checked each time with root checker to ensure root access.
I can also confirm that Safe Root tool was able to root my Sprint L720 MK2-based 4.3 Galaxy S4. I had Odin'ed back to stock MK2 days ago. I haven't tried the SafeTrap Recovery yet so I can back-up/install custom ROMs.

One question though... as I'm now rooted, it's been mentioned that when you boot the device up you should see a "Custom" banner during boot because things have been changed. On my device I never see this and was wondering if that's the case on yours as well.

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place or if there is already a thread about this. If there is, I couldn't find it. I really want to root my phone to use it as a mobile wifi hotspot for my tablet and I am having a really hard time trying to find a link to a forum or a youtube video about how to root my phone. So far, I have only found root tutorials for models other than mine. Do I just have an obscure phone model or is it just more difficult to root? I have wanted to do this for quite some time now so any help is appreciated!
4.4.2 is a new release so currently there is not a root method. As of my last reading there is some significant progress in finding a root method. This is definitely not an obscure phone model. Just a brand new update that developers are still working to root.

This is the only option. All you have to do to mount system is a quick flash of one package in ODIN, and then you just have to do another ODIN after you finish flashing in recovery. It's not that bad really.

Not being able to flash and restore backups on the go definitely is a downside, so this definitely isn't for flashaholics or people who want their flashable mods wherever they are. It's a matter of whether you're willing to take time to set it up stable all at once or just chill back until things are updated (root method and safestrap namely)

How do I check the firmware? The baseband version is I337UCUFNB1.
Yes, I have installed the Super SU from playstore, but before I have used a root_sgh-i337.bat file.

Here you go.
I would prefer to get code from at&t, but have to wait 48 hours for them to get back to the guy who sold the phone to me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If they refuse to provide the code then I will have to mess with the phone to get it unlocked or sell it as is.
