Youtube and constant buffering - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answer

In the last few weeks I've noticed all kinds of buffering when watching Youtube on LTE. Yes, Binge On is off, been that way from the beginning. I even toggled it back on then off again. Also, I'm on unlimited LTE service. *TIN HATS ON* I've noticed that when I run Speedtest app on my phone I get from 25-60Mb soeeds. But when run on other speed tests on the net, its any where from 3-8Mb speed. Wonder if TMo is sandbagging the speeds on Speedtest app. I know its part of Binge On, and doesn't go against your allotment (If I had one)

I've also noticed that whenever I watch YouTube so what I do is put the phone in airplane mode and toggle it back off and that seems to improve the speeds.

So I called TMO and it looks like the area "prioritizing" me because I've used 25gb of my UNLIMITED Internet. What BS. They just went down a few notches in my book.

It sucks but literally every carrier does this after around 20gb of data with their "unlimited" plans. I left sprint the first month they did this to me since I was using around 75-100gb a month for 3 years.

Dam Edge is hella slow!

Well went over the 5gb cap by just using the web and streaming Pandora and Slacker! So they slowed me down to Edge speed and dam its so slow that it wont stream music or even load Youtube Videos. Only pulling in 0.06k speed using the Speednet test. Why so dam slow?

That sucks, even when my phone used edge it obviously wasn't as fast as 3g but i still could surf the web and use pandora with no problem just a few seconds longer of a wait.
Yea so slow and its pissing me off. Wont load crap. Plus my rooted vibrant has been hella laggy too.

Not to be a douche, but to reach 5GBs with just streaming music, you would have to stream close to 100 hours. Did you really use that much?
I haven't gone over the 5GB cap since they instituted it, but I cut it close this past month. I tether very lightly, but I do download roms direct to my phone because a lot of the hosting sites are blocked at work. I also spend about 2 hours on the train round trip and usually stream music, surf the web, etc. I wish they'd just offer a higher cap plan with no throttling. I'd rather pay a few bucks more with the peace of mind that I won't be throttled to 56k modem speeds.

I feel selfish and dirty saying this but in the back of my mind I personally love T-mobile doing this!
The people that tether/stream like crazy (slowing everyone else down) and hide behind contract terms of "unlimited" should be held accountable. A friend of mine showed me how he had use 93gb's last month and I was like "WTF are you doing man?! your slowing me down as well!!!"
Go T-mobile slowdowns Go!

Websense blocks ultrasurf as well. I really don't want to use a proxy, as there has been a firing over using proxies and VPNs recently.

There is a high low option in Pandora. Same goes for YouTube, it will default to low when not on wifi. But yea to be going past 5GB, you got to be doing some crazy things. We are all used to counting minutes(at least those who dont spring for the unlimited plan), so we can do the same with data, but yes it would be nice to be able to pay for the premium. Get the app 3G watchdog, it will track 3g data usage. It allows you to set the start off point, so just check your account at tmo, and put in the current usage and it will continue from there instead of zero.
I've been surviving on Edge since the old days. Cracks me up watching others complain about Edge when they leave the battery sucking 3G on all day. Maybe thats why I have tons of battery life since I idle on Edge all day and fire up 3G and WiFi when I really need it.
Why stream music constantly when you can load up tons of music in the internal memory or SD card?
For the record Edge is not 56k modem speed.
Edge normally runs 70-135kbps with bursts to 200kbps.

maybe i'm retarded but where the hell do you find data usage? i've NEVER been able to find it
edit:
finally found it, had to drill down into my specific line.
When you go over 5 gigs, they cripple your down speed to a fraction of that of edge. What you are experiencing makes edge feel like 10G.
Yea I really used 5gb just using the web and streaming videos and music! downloaded 2 movies from the mediahub! Yea sucks balls!

on a serious note, do what I did. I got a 16gb sd card for music and just download mixtapes with a torrent app over night with wifi. I use a app called swarm and just load up a couple of torrents while your sleep. Use your data for youtube.
If your interested in hiphop and r and b try these.
mixtapetorrent.com or for mediafire mixtape downloads try hiphopthugz.com or datpiff.com
As far as I know these are legit websites for free mixtapes. Sorry in advance if these are against the rules.
Already got like 5gigs of music. But still like using Pandora Radio! Thanks

Personally, for me, when my phone is running under Edge, it is the equivalent of having NO INTERNET. A majority of the time Edge is so slow, that web pages fail to load. I could leave my phone on, and a site would take several mins to barely load.
In my opinion this is a non-functional data plan at that point. I understand unlimited internet technically isn't unlimited 3G, however, I do believe that someone can make a strong case in court, that when speeds are throttled down to Edge, the internet functionality is rendered useless, and thus could be classified as being "LIMITED" internet.
It's like getting an unlimited voice plan, and talking all day long. Then the phone company says "oh well you talk too much, so I'm going to cut down on your voice transmission so you can only hear bits and pieces of your conversation." Essentially the phone call would be useless right?
I think if someone is smart, this is the angle they will play in court. Fine T-mobile, if you want to advertise as "unlimited" then at least the phone should still be able to functionally access websites when you decide to throttle abusers.
Personally I've never hit the 5 or 10gb cap, but I know how it sucks to run Edge. Edge=NO DATA

More then 5k cap?

I was wondering if t mobile offer more then that 5k cap cuz I have unlimited and we all know its pretty ****ty when you go over it uggggg soooo slowwwee. I go over it with out even teathering lol but ya if anyone know let me know.
HTC Mytouch 4g S-off Root
You go over without tethering??? I thought the internet on the phone was setup to use smaller bandwith so we dont go over wow
There was one individual in G2 forums who *supposedly* was throttled and all he had to do is reboot the phone (or switch to edge and back to 3G) to get his speeds back. This was a while ago and I couldn't find the thread at this point but it may work, at least temporary. I never go over so I dont have a way to test it
Good luck.
there is no way to un-cap/throttle yourself when you hit the 5GB limit .. if you have hit it in the middle of the cycle then you are doomed to dial up like speeds for the rest of the cycle.
turning off the phone will not do it and neither will changing the network type cuz you are bound by the computer system that is tied to your number/sim in your account.
and yes the phones are set for mobile view by default which uses about a 3rd less data than full desktop view. So if you took that off or are changing to desktop view then you will use a lot of data for nothing.
if you hit your 5GB limit on the phone and not thru tethering ... you need to lay down the phone every once in awhile.... it'll be good for ya .. promise.
Downloading videos directly to your phone will eat up tons of data. Even if you download on wifi it still uses up your data. After you reach that 5GB plateau you can still use wifi but before you reach that 5GB plateau all wifi DL goes towards your overall data usage. The only way to put videos on your hone is thru your computer. Download on your computer and then hook up your phone to computer and put them directly on your SD Card.
This is obvious to probably everyone here but many think because you are using wifi it doesn't count on usable data. It does. I was throttled because of just that.

How is it possible for it to count against ya when on wifi? You're not even on TMO's network. I use wifi whenever I am home it doesn't show up at all when I check my account through the website. The CSRs even recommend using wifi when ever possible so you don't go over and get throttled
Ive gone over 5gb in the first 2 days of my billing cycle and have gone up to 30+ gb. Yes I tether. And I still get 3-5mbps dl. Speed test confirmed it and I have no noticeable slowed speed. So I don't believe they slow everyone down. They did optimize the phone to use slower bandwidth but if you watch movies or download them, they eat away at your data

Browsing or downloading over wireless does not go towards your 5gig cap.
I was just throttled due to going over the limit. I downloaded youtube videos over my RCN wifi connection and it counted against my data consumption. I called into T-Mobile and was told by 2 different people there that data still goes thru the device so it will still count towards usable data. I argued your point forever and they kept telling me just the opposite. I'm going to have to do some testing now.
You guys are correct, wifi does not count on your billable data. I knew that was correct but I was told by two different tech people just the opposite. I finaly went to the tethering dept of T-Mobile and spent 1 hour on the phone with him and he explained it to me without any bull **** that wifi does NOT count as billable data. Thank God. I am sorry if I confused anyone but I thought after speaking to two different tech agents that something had changed. Use your wifi for any downloading or watching anything videos. He broke it down like this,
1 minute of watching any video will use about 3 mb of data.
1 hour of audio will use about 1 mb of data.
PS - these numbers came from the tethering dept. from T-Mobile.

Slow data on 3g Simple Mobile

Maybe they're throttling the speed, but have you changed roms recently or anything special. You can always call your provider to ask them about the speed.
From what i hear, their unlimited data is capped to 1gb?.... the is what kept me from switching lol.
From what i hear is it is indeed unlimitied data. I think the Simple Mobile $60 plan used to be for 1GB of data but recently got changed to unlimited data.
The current plan is indeed unlimited but if you are caught deviating from the terms of use (i.e tethering, downloading torrents and files from peer to peer) they will either restrict your data or disconnect it.
If you use the data for your phone it is truly unlimited.
You should check with their customer care, I work for T-Mobile and I remember reading something about how they can add a throttle feature and you have to call to have it removed. It won't drop off when the bill cycle switches.

I too am in the same boat, I did change ROM, and suddenly my data got very slow. I called simple mobile to check if I was getting throttled or anything, they told me I was not getting throttled.
It's puzzling me what might be the reason for this, is this because I changed a ROM?
i called them and complained about slow data speed, agent just "rebooted" my account and speed went back

My phone gets "Throttled down" around the 15th as I go over 5gig worth of data...and paying 39.99 for Unlimited Data...WTF?!
I am facing the same issue on Simplemobile. I do some (light weight) tethering to browse my emails etc.
Suddenly last week (Mar 15, 2011) my phone internet speed reduced drastically. Most webpages pages started timing out. Internet basically becomes unusable.
I am start of my billing cycle and have only used 200MB of data. I have never exceeded 1GB in a month.
The only reason I moved to simpleMobile was so that I could use the 'unlimited' data plan.
What to do now? I guess time to move on to other more welcoming providers ?
I was trying to see how much data i could use up before simple mobile decided to throttle down or interrupt my data services so I started watching a lot videos on youtube, movies and i even did some light tethering. So a couple days ago after I hit the 2GB mark my internet slowed down to a crawl.
I still have the H icon but the internet is very slow, I've called them 4 times; they have restarted my data services more than once but it's still slow so today they just created a ticket with their technical support team and the rep said they'd call me withing a couple of days. So let's just wait and see.
Using speedtest.net app, I'm seeing between 1.50mbps-2.70mbps SOMEtimes in the 3.00mbps range. Most I've gotten since I rooted was 3.96mbps and upload is usually always around 1.30mbps. Is this normal for 3G? I don't remember what my results were pre root, but I think I was getting at least 5mbps download. Also I updated to the latest froyo 7.15 blah blah radio, and I see no difference. Supposedly your supposed to get better service and faster 3G. That's not the case for me. Seems the same as always. I'm not using simple im using tmobile us epc.tmobile.com since it was checked on default
Same here. As soon as I hit 2 gb my speed went down. I was listening Pandora, watching YOUTUBE, now I have to wait 2-3 minutes for just for google search page to load! It is complete BS - UNLIMITED, dah?!! Let's all of us who experience problems just file BBB complains under FALSE advertising.
I flashed back to the older radio that the stock slide uses. I get better speeds on it.
This morning I received a text from Simple:
Your Simple Mobile Data service is at risk of being suspended due to violation of terms and conditions.

I checked my account and saw that I had used just over 2gb worth of data. I began the plan (firs time doing unlimited, had just bought an android and killed H2o's(at the time) 50mb limit in 2 days) on the 9th of this month (18 days ago) and was absolutely thrilled at my new Android + Simple experience.
I rooted a G1 I bought and will admit I tethered. I enjoyed bragging about my Android feeding my Chumby, netbook and my girlfriends Phone and how "I *WAS* the internet". This seriously damaged my droid ego.
It was the first month having it and I did do some pretty heavy compared to what I would normally do downloading so I think I can get by on the measly 2gb of bandwidth you get but I don't want to get stuck at the slow speed I've heard mentioned before.
Am I doomed? If it's like this I'd rather go with H2o's 50 plan since it has better coverage and the picture messages are unlimited, not taken out of the 100mb bandwidth. IF it's an unwritten rule not to go over 2gb I can deal, 3 would be friggin perfect though.
Simple Mobile New 2G "unlimited" plan
Have been using Simple Mob for a while with their $60 plan, in June I went abroad, and since they do not have roaming, decided to move to the $50 plan. Now I’m back, and while away they changed the $50 plan from 100 Mb to “2G unlimited”….that is just insane. 2G might be good enough for IM, chatting, and nothing else, and doing that you will never go beyond 100MB, unless you have the patience to wait forever for pictures lo download when surfing any web site.
Now I’m stuck until my new cycle, which will start in 20 days!!! I have called to complain, and they aren’t willing to do anything. At least they should refund me $10 since I can’t use their lousy 2G, and that’s what costs to have Voice + Text, well that didn’t work either.
Arguments were: “we are trying to give our customers the best value for their money….and if you have an AT&T phone you can’t get 3G, so that’s why we created this plan”….. Well that wasn’t a creation, that was an unfair modification, IMO. Very disappointed, with their lack of willingness to help.

What there not telling you (prob because they have no clue) is that the 2g plan falls under the "throttled" profiles on the epc apn (slotted throttling to hold you near 50kbps)
edge @ ~<300kbps is technically 2.5g tech (to simple that is)... cs and pr forget to mention that
wow what the hell???????? i have a sidekick 4g rooted and on custom rom gingerbread clone v2 and my speedtest is download: 0.12mbps upload: 0.14mbps... thats bull... everytime i try to watch youtube off wifi on my data it lags and freezes all the time.. it takes like 10mins to watch a 2 min video... is there a way to fix that????
Possible reason for slow data speeds on Simple Mobile
Seems like this is an older thread but on the same topic that has yet to have an answer or solution.
Since I've come into the same problem, I thought I would repost what I found out today on this topic.
Finally spoke to someone at Simple Mobile tech support that was able to tell me something that makes sense. At least in my case and it may be the issue for others as well.
I switched my SIM from a Verizon Motorola Droid 2 Global, that only supports EDGE / 2G connection to a Tmobile Sidekick 4G. Which is considered a Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
Well the problem is that it connects at 4G and since I am on the $40, when it does try to connect to the towers I am not authorized for 4G, so it automatically throttles me to 119..
He suggested I toggle 4G off and connect 3G and I should get full speeds... My problem now is that this phone doesn't have an option or toggle, that I know of to test.
Perhaps someone else that knows how to toggle a SK4G could give me a hint or someone could put this to the test on their, it would help the rest of us resolve this mystery.

Data diet, how do you guys manage?

I'm testing out At&t network to see if the grass is really greener on the other side. So far it is but I'm not allowed to eat as much grass as I want. I'm currently on Sprint with the contract expiring in a few months. I know most of you guys would think this is a slam dunk case. Of course At&t is going to be faster but you gotta live with the limited data and higher price. But you guys don't know that I live in a Sprint Spark city which is Tampa/St Petersburg.
So for the past month while on Sprint, I've been running 4g LTE speed test on my note 2(didn't upgrade to note 3 because no spark antenna) whenever I'm driving to see how much they've improved. Surprisingly, I stay on 4GLTE most of the time and the speed range anywhere from .2Mbps to 24Mbps. I'm getting 12-20 Mbps at home but at work, it is a paltry .2Mbps.
I looked at my data usage last month on Sprint and it was 16GB! The only one that stream video from youtube is my son since he loves to turn off wifi and utililize the 12-17 Mbps LTE. So I blamed that heavy usage on him.
So I got the no contract note 3 for $250 today via FEDEX, set it up and proceeded to run speed test at work. I ran two speed test back to back and got 20Mbps and 17Mbps download speed. Fantastic! Fast like I thought it should be. Then I went and set the data usage limit at 1GB and a warning at 500MB since I signed up for the $50 mobile value share plan (1GB). I glanced down and saw that the two speed test I just ran just consumed 100MB! So much for running speed test head to head against my note 2 on Sprint. Seems I was too quick to blame my son since the speed test I ran on Sprint Note 2 is probably responsible for most of the 16GB usage last month!
So realistically, for 1GB, if I don't stream video and just check email, facebook, web browsing, yelp, google map, will that be enough?
I'm not looking to stay with the mobile value plan because of the tax on top of the $50 plan. I'm switching to Go Phone plan 2.5GB free hot spot plan after I use up my $100 credit for new customer with AT&T. I figured 2.5 gb is plenty since my wife occasionally stream video on her note 3 on Sprint and hardly go over 2gb of usage.
What is you guys typical usage since most of you guys are tech savvy enough to limit background data, disabling sync, notification, etc. I figured 1GB is probably too limited and 2.5 GB should be plenty if I'm not streaming video. I also have plenty of choice for Wifi now that I am both a Brighthouse customer and an AT&T customer.
I use about 2.3 GB per month, most from web browsing at work where there's no wifi.

I personally use 5-10 gm per month. this is doing anything i want with it and only using wifi at home since i do not have wifi at work (well i do but its filtered and scrubbed)
this would be a few netflix movies, some streaming music through the play store (all access subscriber) and downloading any game/app i want.
What the hell speed test did you run? the Ookla Speedtest.net app uses a 3mb source file.
Also, I don't have a data diet, I have 10gb. I used ~4 last month.
Edit: I don't stream video or audio. I just download (buy) music, surf, Facebook, and download games.
I run Plex, netflix, spotify, Web browsing, facebook, games... pretty much everything. I usually watch one 30 minute tv show over LTE during lunch due to no wireless at work. My usage is around 8gb/month. My wife uses around 1gb since her work has wireless. We use the 10gb plan.
I have been trying to go on a "data diet" since realizing how much I have been using. One thing I am currently trying is PlexPass sync. This allows me to download my TV shows to my device for offline viewing. It's still in beta, and it definitely shows (random unplayable content, breaking its usability). The streaming of Plex works perfectly and I just set the bit rate low to conserve.

Trust me, I'll post screen shot later. The faster your dl and ul speed, the more the Ookla speed test app use. I ran another one at home and got over 20 dl and 7 ul and that tack another 50 MB. On the other hand I streamed Milk music and that only used .5Mb for every minute. Not bad at all.
Speedtest Data Use
I ran three Ookla speedtests and two rootmetric speedtest (7 Mbps not shown). So the higher the speed, the more data it consumes.
i dont watch youtube or stream music/movie.
i use about 1.7gb-1.9gb per month.
i have the old att 2gb plan for 25$.
i just ordered the FreedomPop hotspot, 500mb free data every month.
so now i have 2.5gb a month !
If I don't stream music on Play Music I can stay under 2gb with what I would consider to be "moderately heavy" web browsing (1-2 hours a day maybe) and then crap tons of Hangout messages/texts etc.
If I stream music when i'm driving to work (which I generally do) it goes up to like 3-5gb per month.
I have a 20gb plan with 7 phones for $320 a month, that includes my phone payment and taxes. I use 6 to 8 of the gb myself.

You know you can be friends with other freedompop users, if you add 10, you get 50MB extra per each friend, making it total 1GB per month for free. But if you get close to 900MB, I heard they cut you off. In your current situation, if you get close to 400MB, you will be cut off.
Also Freedompop uses Sprint's Wi-Max which doesn't have that good coverage. But that depends on where you are.
I'm living with 300MB plan, but I wish I can remove the data completely. I think $20 for 300MB is a rip off.
I have been on a data diet ever since I switched from my 4GB plan 2yr contract to the 2GB value plan with no contract. I usually get speeds up to 25GB/s.
The way I manage is by listening to pandora at work on my work computer on my cell via their wifi... its the only way I can survive programming all day. On saturdays, I still punch about 12 hours on pandora at my side job. Other than that... that is all of my heavy usage. Everything else would only clock about 700MBs a month. ALL OF my updates for apps are done at home on my home wifi since my work wifi doesn't like the stores download packages, its will update some but not all.
Overall i am averaging about 1400 MBs a month. Sometimes just to get my moneys worth... I will purposly DL large so i cap out... even if I don't need it.
I'll bet your 100mb was the phone downloading updates for installed apps? Check Settings -> Data Usage to be sure.
Ookla speed test is ~2.5MB/run
If I don't stream video, I use 250mb/month, plus what I use tethering. I have no idea how people run through 16GB of bandwidth in a month - I don't even do that on my home broadband...

I'm living with 300MB plan, but I wish I can remove the data completely. I think $20 for 300MB is a rip off.

Give att a call and tell them you switched to a dumb phone.
Then uncheck the box for Mobile Data from phone.

Won't work. They have a IMEI database, so they know I'm using a smartphone. Even if you get to take off the data, it'll be added right back on within days.
If I had an international version Note3, that would be a little bit different story. But even then (with unknown IMEI smartphone), they sometimes find out that you have a smartphone, and they slap you with $30 data or whatever charge. It's pure BS.
I'm thinking of moving to AIO wireless once my contract is over. $35 per month with unlimited (throttled data after 500MB) everything.

Nope all apps and therfore the Google play store are downloaded and updated via wifi. Clearly the data usage screen shot showed what used a majority of the 226 Mb. And that was the speed test app and the root metric app. I ran two test shown and it used 100Mb. Ran the third one and it showed 159 Mb used. I got the phone for two days and that is all the data used.
None of this is a big deal. I can effortlessly stayed under 2GB with wifi at work and at home. Just search speed test data hog and you will confirm that it used a lot more than you think. If you're getting 25 Mbps download, it likely used 50 Mb of your data. I ran Speedtest app continuously on my note 2 on sprint and racked up 2.5gb in 7 days. I never paid attention to it until I'm testing at&t. I'm going to switch to the 2.5gb go phone plan anyway so I am sure I can stay under 2.5gb.

Straight Talk data speed issies

I have been using Straight Talk on Verizon's towers for well over two years now and I have had something odd happen. For the last few months anyway I have been keeping an eye on my data speed and it has always been very fast. Just within the last couple of days my download speed has dropped to around 5 Mbps. This is no problem for browsing, Facebook, email, etc., but now when I try to download a larger file it takes forever. I downloaded the new PN ROM today which is less than 300 megs and it took almost an hour. Before it would only take 20 minutes or so for a file that size.
I have contacted Straight Talk and they say I am provisioned like I should be, and there are no tower problems in my area. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

They are capped on the Verizon side at 5mbps. Att on the other hand is not. Something about tower owning or something. But yeah, what you're seeing is correct. That's why I switched to the att sim.

Thanks for the reply. What kind of speeds do you get on att?

At work, which is usually 1 bar less than full I get around 14-15 down 12 up. I'll take a speed test tomorrow if I remember. At home I have 1 bar, with the Verizon sim I have 0.
Did a quick speed test with the 1 bar LTE. Not really sure what is up with the upload speed. Ping seems a bit high but I'd say not bad for 0 to 1 bar.
Switch to Verizon prepaid. Get the Walmart plan 50 bucks for 5gbs of LTE data with throttled speeds after that. Carry over data, and best thing uncapped data speeds
