For pattern lock: Settings > Location & Security > Security Lock
From there you can do a passcode or the pattern. I personally use pattern because it can replace the slide to unlock all together while keeping it secure.
I got the pattern lock....but what about adding a note or your personal contact information, thats whats missing...thanks
If there is a way, I haven't found it. I know you can do it on rooted devices, depending on how the rom is set up, but as far as the droid x, I haven't seen a way to do it. You can download an app from the market that will call your phone if you lose it. Also there are apps that will find your phone on GPS. I know this isn't really what your wanting to do, but it will help you if it gets lost.
after many hours on the net I found the answer. you get this by installing the antivirus program from the apps market. you change the "this phone belongs to:" by going to the antivirus program and pressing the menu button form there go to settings, then remote management and finely lost message. you can change the whole message

That's just specific to that app. There is no way on the stock rom to set this information you are looking for. Just add a contact called Me to your contact list. That way if you lose the phone, somebody may call you (If they don't keep the phone)

Too much work for something too small I think.
One way is to update your wallpaper image to have the text you want (using your favorite image editor). Of course then it'll show on the normal home/launcher as well. But a short "Belongs to John Doe, (555) 555-5555" towards the bottom-center should work.
just found WidgetLocker Lockscreen. I havent tried it yet but I guess you can put widgets on the lock screens so I can put a note there with all this information...worth a try
Alright guys, I've been looking around a lot on the kindle fire forums and haven't seen any way to remove the lock screen, but I've seen people asking how to. I apologize if this was posted already, but I haven't seen it.
It's very simple, you need the app "No Lock" (It's free in the marketplace) and Titanium backup.
1) Install No Lock, if you try to enable it, it will force close.
2) Go to Titanium backup, Select the "Backup/Restore" tab on top, and find No lock on the list.
3) Hold down on No lock, then select "Force close app" (Not sure if that's really necessary), then select "Convert to system app"
4) Enable No lock, and it should work just fine.
I did notice, when you reboot the kindle, your notification bar goes missing, to get it back, just disable no lock, then enable it again.
Nice discovery.
I might have to try that next time I switch back to watch Netflix.

Yea I wasn't 100% sure it wasn't posted before, I got the idea from another thread that asked how to do it.

I don't have any use for Google Now nor do I use the built-in Google search function and I'm trying to find a way to remove the shortcut thing that pops up when I long-press the home button on the navigation bar. It's actually infuriating the amount of times I pull it up by mistake.
I am running Paranoid Android 2.5 ROM and the navigation bar options specifically states that the home button shortcut can not be changed in those options like the back/recent/menu buttons can.
I have deleted the googlequicksearchbar.apk from the system apps folder and that at least causes it to just bork up and stops it trying to load everything up when I end up selecting Google Now by mistake but it's still a pain in the ass to have that shortcut there.
I've searched around and the only things I found covering this were disabling it on the lockscreen which is different from what I am trying to achieve.
Has anyone had any success on the PA ROM in regards to removing the Google Now shortcut from the Home button?

Which google app is that? There is no Velvet.apk to be found and there's nothing in Titanium Backup's list that I can see that looks like it would be that either. I see google voice search and google search. The latter which is no longer present as I deleted the searchbox apk already.

Lol the Google search app. But I guess u don't wanna do that. Other than that u got no option. Except maybe get an older Google search apk n install,u know from stock ICS gapps? Then u would have Google search n no popup.
THIS. IS. NEXUS.
Have you tried to disable Google Search app in Settings->Apps?
Worked on my Galaxy Nexus with stock rom.
You'll probably have to kill and restart Launcher process to get rid of the grey bar at the top of the screen.

I don't think you have to do any of that. Go to settings and go to system settings, hardware keys, or navigation. Go to the home button and change it to none.

I've manged to get Google now off the Nexus 7
After hours fiddling I found the answerr
You go into settings, click on app, and then scroll to the reach 'all'
You will see Google Search open it and hit all buttons which cut the cache and another 2 buttons which I d'ont remeber. Anyway click all the buttons there.
Then you will find that where the google search box was there is now a grey block in its place.
Close down the phone, and when you turn it on again the grey box is gone your sexy home page is back!
I really don't undertand the minds of Google Now. The annoying pop notes never told me nothing I needed to know. Google should at least give an easy option to turn the thing off. I fed with things being installed in phones which you can't deleat.
To those wanting to disable search, that's ok, it is your tablet and you can do with it as you like. But, is it really so hard to not hold down the home button? I use search every day multiple times and find it extremely useful. You can turn off any or all cards and even turn off Now and you get the search screen without any cards. If you gave it a fair try you might fine it useful. Others have posted how to disable it, so the OP has his question answered, but I encourage people to learn and use search.
I disable it because I use my nexus for gaming. So I like it keep my background processes to a minimum. I can only assume others do it for much the same reason. If you don't use it why have it running?

You can kinds of disable it using SwipeLaunch Disabler.
https:/play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hk.sld.SwipeLaunchDisabler
Go to settings, apps, all, scroll down to Google+ and disable it.
That will just show the "old google search" when you use the home button.
If you want it back go to playstore search Google+ and enable it.
My question is, is there a way to add shortcuts to that menu?
Maybe replace it with this: Home Button Launcher
You can add shortcuts and it's Open Source.

I'm using Paranoid Android v2.50 on my Samsung GS3... I found it irritating that sometimes I would hit the "menu" button too long on my phone by accident (normally when it was in landscape view) and that would bring up the Google Search page every time... here is what to do:
1) Head to "Settings" > "Interface" > "System" > "Hardware keys"
2) Tick "Enable custom actions", the options below will light up for you to edit.
3a) In my case, I had to edit "Menu key (long press)" and set it to "No action"
3b) In your case it would be "Home key (long press)" and then set that to "No action".
That will stop the Google Search feature popping up when you accidentally hold the button down too long

I think that is okay to learn how to use it, but for me it is a bit annoying everytime I play MinecraftPE. The proximity of down button and home button is so close that I always end up presing home button then search pops out. I am on stock rom 4.1.1 device with soft keys and notification all bundled up.
OK so i didn't much like the stock Dialer and contacts to slow and look horrible so i set about trying to find a suitable alternative, now upon finding a couple of good ones Dialer One & TouchPal Go i followed various guides on how to set up installed dialers as your default dialer, applications manager-all then clear default on stock phone app launch new dialer and it should come up with an option to choose which dialer to use, ive come to the conclusion that most of the dialer apps ive tried this option never comes up thus not allowing you to use as a stock dialer, now i read that if you disable the contacts under application manager - all then go into your dialer you want to use it will come up with the new default option upon doing this i noticed that the Stock contacts & phone icon have disappeared from the homescreen and app-drawer, i can only find the phone listed in application manager - all but not contacts , what do i do to get them back ? thx

Not sure on your question per se but once you do get em back ignore those guides because you don't have to do anything to make it work. Just lose the shortcuts on the desktop and replace them with the ones you want and press that icon instead. When an app wants to hook a dialer and you have more than one installed a window will pop up asking which one you want to use, select dialer one and always and you are good to go. This will happen each time a new app that hasn't tried to use the dialer before wants to do so but it wont be long before you have them all covered and you never see them again. The good thing about this is you simply need to clear defaults to go back should you choose and also if you want to use them on a case by case basis you can. In other words dont select always and the option will come up every time that app tries to hook the dialer. The same holds true with the contacts and replacement contact apps.

'When an app wants to hook a dialer and you have more than one installed a window will pop up asking which one you want to use, select dialer one and always and you are good to go' EXACTLY and after many wasted hours i concluded that many of the dialer/contacts apps dont allow for such an option to appear the new app just launches without said popup box. However i still dont know how to get back the stock phone/contacts icon.

I've made some progress debloating and customizing, but there are some more things I'd like to do:
1. Remove Quick Settings from notification panel - In landscape view, there is simply not enough screen real estate for the actual notifications because the Quick Settings (and 'clear notifications' row) take up half the screen. I would like to remove them or have them scroll up and off screen when scrolling through notifications. Can this even be done with a custom ROM?
2. Tether without pin lock screen. [updated] FoxFi worked fine for me unrooted, except that I had to use the PIN lockscreen. The instruction on PdaNet's site (change certificate to Wi-fi, etc.) did not work. I eventually found X Tether. Once installed, it shows up as Moto Tether. It seems to allow the native WiFi hotspot to work on its own, but I haven't used it much yet. The easiest way I have found to turn it on/off, is using a widget. I haven't been able to put the widget in an app folder, which I would prefer.
3. Minimal notification panel - figured this one out.
4. Bypass Samsung lockscreen before DynamicNotifications - Not sure if this is possible. Sometime, when I turn the phone on, it goes to the stock lock screen before switching to DynamicNotifications. I saw that DynamicNotifications shows up as a module in Xposed, but it just said something about disabling a message that I don't recall getting.
5. A better dialer and contacts - any recommendations on getting solid, vanilla-like Dialer and Contacts? I tried a couple apps from the Play Store, but they were kind of sloppy in one way or another.
6. No auto play music when turning on radio in car - When I turn on my bluetooth receiver in the car, the last track always starts playing - even if I paused it before I turned off the car last. I kind of wish it would only continue playing if it was playing when the receiver was disconnected. Not a big deal, but thought I'd ask.
7. Update phone when checking exchange emails on computer - When I read, archive, delete, etc. emails in Outlook, they continue to pile up in Email app until I open the email app. Seems like my Galaxy Nexus didn't do that.
8. Remove TouchWiz blue from everything - all the menus and apps still have that Samsung blue theme. I'm not sure how to remove that.
9. Reduce icons on notification bar - I would like to remove the Bluetooth icon. There is a blank icon when I use Rotation Locker in the background to keep everything landscape while I'm in the car. It looks bad having the space between icons and I'd like to get rid of it. There is a battery icon that appears when the battery is charged. I'd like to remove that as well.
10. Make folders only one icon on display - figured this one out.
11. Remove battery icon that appears when S5 is fully charged - There is a white battery with "100" on it that appears when the battery is charged. That makes 3 battery icons total when it's charged. Ridiculous!
12. Disable camera shutter sound and boot sound - Wanam has a setting for this. I have it checked, but the camera and boot still make their sounds.
Edit: added another.
Edit2: and another
Edit3: another

Do you really think what I am asking is too unreasonable?
Is this the best thread for these questions? I figured at least a few would have gotten answers.
Not sure about the boot sound but I use Automateit to silence the shutter sound. I have it set to silence the phone when opening the camera and then it returns the phone to full volume when I close it. If the phone is on silent it doesn't make the shutter sound.

I guess I don't see XDA as a place to come and post a wish list of features I would like to have. I approach it as a place where devs share their work. I limit my questions to things like 'does anyone know if their is a ROM that does xy or z'
Since I'm an end-user by which I mean I don't code, I stay super respectful of those who do and live by the motto 'read more and post less'. While I think it has grown from its roots, it is first and foremost a forum for devs and technically knowledgeable people, and/or people with a genuine desire to become that. I'm just a guest. I'd never go to someone's party with a list of the foods I want prepared.
Anyway that's how I see it, and how I approach the site.
Though I do see now that apparently you are working on doing some themeing so take the above for whatever it is worth.

That's essentially what I did. I spent time searching, reading, and learning as far as I could without help. I was able to accomplish some on my own, but I ended up with a list of things I still wanted to do. So, I put them all in one post.
If you wouldn't use the "Q&A/Help" section to post questions like I do, that's fine. I have used many forums for many years, and I know that different people use them for a variety of reasons. I'm not going to spend any more time justifying my post. I hope that you can find a better use of your time beyond complaining about other people's posts.
Dude you asked if you you had asked for too much. I replied about how 'I' view being on XDA. No on asked you to justify anything. But consider it dropped.

I was able to change the lock screen options back to all being available for selection with FoxFi in use by doing the Lock the phone from Device Manager on Google. As soon as I did the remote lock, all of my lock screen options returned even with FoxFi installed and operational. I read about doing this on another post here somewhere...
