ZF2 root - ZenFone 2 General

Hi, I'm a newcomer about modding.
I wanted to ask if is possible to root the zf2 (ze551ml) without hard resetting it.
I found this video, is it reliable? youtube[dot]com/watch?v=hkl15JIsAWY
Thanks

There are several root methods; I would suggest using the one click root method for your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61687944&postcount=4
As a precaution, I would download files directly from the owners post in XDA instead of following youtube links as they do alter the workings of your phone at a low level. You can find plenty of guides on the forum and rooting will not hard reset your phone.

Ok i Will do that.
Few questions:
what do i risk doing that?
My warranty will be valid if i unroot?
Ota will work?
I want to do that for the bloatware and for stop the background processes i dont want (hi Facebook), there is anything else cool i can do with a rooted device?
Thank you!
Edit: i even want to remove the energy saver application, is there any problem if i do that?

Your warranty should be valid unless you unlock the bootloader, and even then I saw a thread about relocking it.
For OTA, i always unroot before then reroot after to prevent any incompatibility problems but most users don't have a problem.
As for uses of root, look around on XDA there are plenty of uses.

Wait, why worry about OTA's unless you have a stock based rom, am I thinking right here?

And if i ard reset, the root stays or i have to do it again?

Sorry for repost, since im going to play with cpu governors and other kernel stuff, is it possible to reset the kernel to factory settings? Just in case i do some damage, for go back to default settings

Doing a Hard Reset will remove your root so you need to startover and re-root again, if rooting alone satisfies you(eg: no custom rom, no xposed, no custom kernel) then you don't have to play with the kernel cause you need to unlock bootloader(hence you can always turn it back to default/factory settings thru relock)..
there are many ways to root, i recommend Tethered Recovery Method or One Click Root Method as if it is easy and fast, in my situation i use tethered recovery so i can flash xposed without unlocking bootloader. It's up to you what method would you prefer but beware if you did something wrong(Didn't follow the procedure correctly)with the process it may cause your device to brick.

If I buy, why root?

I am thinking about getting one of these. But I have 1 question. What is the benefit of rooting it? On a phone, it makes sense... since you can tether. But what features on a tablet does one get from ROOT that they otherwise wouldn't?

USB OTG support, new ROMs, debloat, being able to back up certain apps/data
I felt I wouldn't need to root. But then I couldn't help installing Titanium Backup and restoring backups of almost all apps from my phone. That's one reason, and then there are a lot of other reasons too, as the poster mentioned above.
I haven't rooted my Nexus 7 yet, but when I do it'll primarily be for backing up my device. I love titanium backup and ROM manager. Even if you don't flash custom Roms,it still comes in handy to easily create full backups.

I'm too new to post links, but there's one on this site that if you root your device, that doesn't void your warranty. I'd search and read that.

Just unroot and relock bootloader
In development section, theres a toolkit by 'Wugfresh' that does everything for you. Check it out
thanks you too.. I appreciate the help without the ding that happens in some threads.
thanx
Appreciate it!
Rooted for the sole purpose of changing dpi to 160 to get true tablet mode.

I'd highly suggest you don't don't root unless you absolutely positively have a dire need for it. And, even then you should run stock for at least a few weeks to establish a base line so that if issues arise you can determine if rooting/kerneling/etc. is causing it. Seen too many glitches caused with non-stock in the forums.
I'd root for tablet ui and stickmount.

Root Now or later

Should i root now or later? Why i ask is because if i do root now will a ota update come out and brick my phone or should i just wait till a rom comes and root then flash it?
Please help im a flashoholic stop me while you can. Can't have this powerful device in my hand without root
I'm wanting to root mine but I'm going to wait until we can get custom recovery and roms. It won't be long I would imagine. I do wonder if we'll get an ota soon because of the call quality issue.
I'm gonna wait myself. I feel your pain though. I did read that the international version has had 2 upgrades already that supposedly made the wifi, phone reception, & battery life better. From what I read anyway. It was in a thread on here. Plus there seems to be a lot of problem after rooting posts in the Q&A section. I figure better safe than sorry.

Why would you want it overclocked? Phone runs fine on the quad core snapdragon processor. Overclocking (half of the time) leads to some sort of instability. It heats your phone up like a stove because you basicly gave your phone ritilin. And don't even get me started on the battery...
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
There is no reason to overclock. This phone flies and 6 hours of screen time on a charge is ridiculous as well. Just root and get it over with. It is simple to do. Just follow the directions to a T.
I delayed a few days and need not have. Procedure is straightforward and not hard.
It's easy to root the only disadvantage is wiping everything out.

OTA cant just be put on your phone. You have to accept the update to be flashed. So rooting has nothing to do with it.
You can always freeze SDM.apk and that will prevent it. But again, Verizon Updater app just notifies you that an OTA is available.
just root now no issues whatsoever with mine during or after root and overclock!?!? what do you want its a 2.3 ghz quadcore sd 800 and you want more!?!? this phone is like butter in anything and everything fully loaded with 100+ apps i see zero reasons to overclock
Thank you so much guys, one more question to ask. If i root it does it trigger anything that shows root like the unlock logo when booting like (custom)

It does not trip knox. You remove the custom logo with Wanan Xposed -> Security Hacks -> Fake System Status.
And you can always restore back to stock.

Yep, as soon as I got it. I didn't want to wait around and get things set up and then root later and have to set them all up again
I entertained the idea of giving stock a try but about 30 seconds of the default DPI and VZW bloat put an end to that.

The side effects are that you can remove a feature, or a dependency of a feature that you want. That's why I froze them with Titanium Backup; easy to just defrost is something acts weird.
airmaxx23 posted this list of the apps he removed without any problems.
Rooting with the current method will wipe your device. So, until a method comes along that doesn't wipe your device, it's best to do it sooner than later, so you have less stuff to restore and re-download.
Also. Who knows when VZW will push out a patch. Best to root and disable the APK that looks for OTAs before you start getting annoying update popups.
The root method we have no is dead easy, and simple to follow. Takes all of about 5 minutes and you're finished. Very easy and hassle free.

[Q] Custom ROM

Hey,
I'm thinking about putting a custom ROM on my handset, can anyone help me out and let me know the benefits of this and if it's really worth it?
Performance, customisation, more storage space
But generally at the expense of stability

Thanks for that,
If I did put a custom ROM on my S5, could I reset the device and it would go back to normal if I didn't like it?
Also in regards to the stability part, with the new update I have got on my S5 at the moment. The phone isn't what it used to be, they don't even display notifications on the phone without opening it.
Yea you can return to stock, but you can't do it by just resetting, you need to flash the stock ROM using ODIN, once you flash any ROM, resetting it will just reset that specific ROM, to change ROMs you need to flash the one you want
Factory resetting after updating from KK to LP is always recommended with stock, for the notifications, you have a load of lock screen settings you can look through, might find what you need in there - possibly in the security settings too, there are some that disable sensitive notifications when the phone is locked

Is rooting on an android device relatively easy?
Or if anyone else has a good custom ROM I could use, I'm pretty new to this.....so something that isn't too stressful would be good!

It's very easy. You can use CF Auto Root for whatever android version you have.
keep in mind that rooting voids your warranty and will trip KNOX flag which leads to that you can't update using official methods such as via kies or OTA.

Noob needs help Rooting Samsung Verizon Note 4 SM-N910V version 5.1.1

Hello,
I am completely new at this and would like help rooting my Samsung Note 4 Verizon: SM-N910V; Version 5.1.1
I use this phone for work also and got work email on it as well
Few questions:
1) Can anyone share a step-by-step guide to root this phone?
2) Once rooted, will I still have access to my work email, contacts and apps currently on the phone?
3) Am I able to switch back and forth from stock to root version?
4) Will I lose all my contacts, after rooted?
5) Will I be able to replace stock apps such as the stock music player (which is crap) with another better player like Poweramp?
6) In order to avoid messing up any warranties, will I be able to restore to stock? If so, can you also share step-by-step instructions on that as well?
Thanks so much for all your help.
Looking forward to your replies.

Let's start with number 6 first. You will trip the Knox counter, there is no way to reset it and your warranty will be swirling the toilet bowl. Your replacement insurance really doesn't care whether your phone is rooted or not, but to be sure, I'd report the phone as missing before I'd say it was defective. If your workplace is depending on the security that Knox provides, they will not be happy that your phone is rooted.
A rooted phone is exactly the same as an unrooted phone except that you have far more control over what you can do with it. Anything you can do with an unrooted phone you can do rooted plus a lot more. That includes the ability to nuke your phone. It is not something to be taken lightly. But if you can follow directions precisely and not freelance, you should do well. My suggestion is this: if you don't understand anything about the instructions, if there's a term you're not familiar with, stop. Google, search, whatever it takes until you do understand what you're doing. It's not necessary to understand programming language... though in the rooting instructions you will have to issue some ADB commands. The instructions will tell you what those commands are. If you're interested in what they do, more power to you
Once you've seen what it takes to unlock the bootloader, you will probably not want to do that again. It involves Chinese software, with all of the inherent risks that entails. But yes, you can roll the phone back to stock. The Knox counter will remain tripped.
If you've already taken the Marshmallow OTA, all bets are off. There are reports of people being able to roll back to Lollipop but they were rooted. It's not a surefire method. And no, you can't root Marshmallow.
Still want to give it a go? There are three or four guides in this forum that will tell you how to do it. Follow the directions carefully. Forgetting to take the SD card out as directed will result in a bootloop, for example.

I was pretty sure that my post answered all of the questions you raised in the OP. Rooting your phone does nothing except give you higher privileges. Your contacts will remain. You can add and subtract apps at will. You can swap back and forth between root but why would you? Rooting your phone trips the Knox counter, as I said. Your warranty is no more.
If you took an update in the past week, the odds are real good that you're on Marshmallow. Go to settings>about phone and look for the Android version. 6.0.1 means you have Marshmallow. Anything else means you don't.
I'm trying not to be rude, but if you don't know this stuff, you're probably not ready to root, and I don't think your questions can be answered in a couple of posts. I'd strongly suggest spending a couple of hours with Google and seeing if rooting is right for you.
There are at least three threads on this page that cover how to unlock the bootloader. Dude, at some point, you're going to have to help yourself. That would be a great place to start.
I am on 5.1.1 Lollipop.

I've been doing this stuff for six years and I won't do anything to my phone before I've had a chance to read up on it first. First, will it be worth the trouble, and second, I'm more than willing to let others screw up so I don't have to.
I don't mind trying to help people, but they've gotta be willing to try to help themselves.

Just a few questions...

Hey guys! I want to ask you some questions about root, flash,... because I know NOTHING about it (I'm a true beginner at XDA forums). My device is a SM-J510FN, so I thought it was here the best place to ask them.
Okay so here are my questions :
- What's the difference between "Root" and "Flash"?
- I know my device will have Nougat in September, so if I root or flash my phone, will it receive this update?
- Do my phone need to be rooted to have the possibility to install mods?
- In the camera app, I can't control the focus with a slider like the S6's camera app for example, so if I root or flash my phone, will it be possible to have this slider? Or do I need to instal a mod/rom?
I think that's it, I will understand if you think my questions are stupid, but I'm sure you guys are nice ❤ Also, forgive my mistakes, I'm French ^^
Thank you!

-You might or might not receive OTA updates, but you can always install firmware via Odin no matter you are rooted or not.
-Yes you need root or a custom recovery for mods (eg. TWRP)
-If you rooted your phone in stock rom, the camera app will have no difference. You won't get the slider feature. You need to flash(install) a mod or rom zip.

Wow, awesome! Thank you for your answers! By the way, I understood that kingroot was not a "clean" way to root a device, is Magisk a better way to root it?
There isnt a way that rooting can be clean. Also if you root, or just put anything unofficial, including a custom recovery, your knox counter goes to 0x1 and can never be recovered to 0x0. That way you can get your warranty not approved if they see it, and also you cant use apps that need knox like secure folder, my knox etc
Oh okay, I don't use them, but it's good to know! I'll root my phone when Samsung will no longer update my device (I'm sure we'll never have Android O).
