So, I just re-purchased a Nexus 6P after an ill advised dalliance with an iPhone.
Taking advantage of the current sale, I ordered a "Very Good" condition Graphite 64gb from Amazon Warehouse Deals. When it arrived, it was in perfect condition.
I booted it, ran through the OTA's up to April. I then proceeded to Unlock Bootloader, install TWRP, and flash systemless SuperSU before setting up my apps, etc.
Then I noticed something weird... whenever I'd try to play a video in Instagram, it would show a still image for a few seconds, sometimes play a bit of audio, then stop with a circular "replay" arrow.
I then noticed that I couldn't play video anywhere... not YouTube, not Facebook, not through Chrome.
I downloaded the May Factory Image and flashed everything. Set the phone up as New and didn't restore anything. Installed Instagram... same problem.
I've re-flashed several times, relocked the bootloader, etc. and it still does it.
Could video playback somehow be affected with a hardware fault, even if the rest of the phone appears to work normally? I'm completely baffled here.
Just for giggles, try flashing a custom rom.

Did you try before installing instagram ?
Probably the part of videos that use hardware acceleration from gpu, which is probably most these days is borked. Try installing mx player and setting the settings to software only decoding and see if a video plays in that. Then try hardware only mode. If it works only on software then that's your problem. I've had this happen on a PC years a go.

I have the v500 since christmas and i had no problem until i updated to kit kat. Before that, i watched my videos on bsplayer (its quite easy for using subtitles) or VLC, but now they both dont work well. Bsplayer is like slow, i mean, every 2 seconds the image stops for an instant and then continues, sound works without problem. In VLC it's the sound that stops working once every five minutes more or less, and for a few seconds. Sometimes, it also happens with some games. I alredy tried to restore the device and reinstalling the apps. Also deleting data files and cache of both apps.
Anyone having this problem and a solution??

Although I like BSPlayer and it works fine for me, I should point out that the default video player by LG works very well, reads subtitles just fine, and many codecs.
Did you clear app data or did you try uninstalling the apps and do a fresh install after the upgrade? I don't use either of those apps but i did have a problem after the upgrade with a couple of apps behaving badly until i cleared the app data and one required a reinstall.
doh, can you tell I was watching hockey when i wrote this? It looks like you already tried my suggestions...

I have problem with videos also.
I has started after changing soft to new soft 4.4.2.
While playing video (.mkv or .mp4), in defeault player or in MX Player, every few minutes, the picture is freezing for few seconds (audio is playing normally).
I have tried with different movies, always the same.
Before Android update everything was allright.

The same is happening to me as well. I'm considering following the thread in XDA about downgrading to original 4.2.2, but I'm worried about bricking the G Pad. It's the last option; i have tried with several different players, and after a factory reset to no avail.
It's a mess from LG, I can't understand how this could go under the radar during their testing phase.
Anyone has info about future updates?
this actually happens to me using the stock video player on kit kat. I been using mx player since then with no issues..
Hi,
I have exactly the same issue with videos on 4.4.2 whatever video player I am using. I updated my tablet as soon as I bought it, so I can not compare to 4.2.
I switched to the ART runtime (you need to enable Developer options to do so) a week ago and since then, video playing is smooth again.
Regards,
Bought this phone brand new back in December, only one issue with the phone. Whenever I play YouTube videos the sound is always staticy. I tried through the app and the website on chrome, same thing. I even installed viper4android thinking that might fix it but its still there, maybe even worse. It happens to all videos through app or chrome, doesn't matter. Anyone else experiencing this? I've tried factory resetting, a different ROM etc... When I play videos through Netflix, hulu, amazon video, etc its fine. Even gallery videos are fine. Thanks for any help.
Sorry to hear that but I haven't: might want to do an exchange. Fwiw, I replaced mine 4x due to pink screen issue so quality issues not uncommon.

When doing an exchange do they give you a brand new device or a refurbished? That's the only issue my phone has and would hate to return it for something that was previously used that might have another issue. Also does it matter if my phone is rooted if they'll take it back?
Hello.
My friend got a nexus 6p one year ago. One month ago he started to have problem. He was on stock rom
-First when he pressed the touch screen he heard small weird noises (hard to describe)
Then progressively :
-Speaker stopped working
-he could not play youtube video in you tube app : a weird error message (every time different) appeared. Gallery videos don't work as well
-But weirdly enough video played in the web browser including youtube videos, works, still without sound.
-He cannot make calls
-Jack plug doesn't works either, but he can use his Bluetooth headphones
We tried to install a custom rom (lineage os). We succeeded, but the above problem appeared again.
Then we flashed the factory image https://developers.google.com/android/images for nexus 6p. We also succeed but the above problem appeared again.
Thanks in advance for your help

The 6P has two speakers, and they wouldn't both fail at the same time. Sounds like he's damaged the phone somehow. The audio jack and speaker output both not working seem to back this up. I've seen the headphone jack part available separately, and there are guides available to replace it. Before flagging it as a hardware issue and opening the phone up, you want to make sure you wiped the phone completely by formatting the partitions (system, userdata, cache) and use the flash-all.bat included with the full Google image. There is a remote chance it is software related, but I doubt it.
You could always flash a custom kernel, use a kernel manager app to turn off the large core cpu and see if the problems go away. If they do its related to the build problem that causes the 6P to boot loop but those particular symptoms aren't familiar. It's still worth a try if flashing the stock image doesn't fix the problem.

You mean disabling the big CPU ?

Yes. You can always turn it back on but turning it off apparently fixes the permanent boot loop problem on the Nexus 6P. If the problems you are describing are related to the same build problem then turning it off might make them go away. Sometimes people's phones would start acting odd before going into the permanent bootloop. That phone could be on its way there.
this is purely a guess but the problem may be hardware related with the headphone jack. it could have a physical short somewhere. if thats the case the device may think a headphone jack is being used and wont play through speakers because its being told its plugged in. But wont play because of some physical short or an open.
Just got this phone from a coworker, factory reset to Android 5.
I tried to take a video with the stock camera app but when I press the video button, nothing happens.
I loaded some music on the phone from my computer and everytime I click play on Poweramp, the scrollbar goes nuts. On google music it tells me the requested song could not be played. When I try to play videos on youtube chrome, chrome crashes.
When I try to play a 3d game (I downloaded this: https://apkpure.com/city-racing-3d/com.racergame.cityracing3d ) the app does not even start.
I tried updating the webview app as recommended here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/nexus-4-video-playback-issue-android-5-t3177415
But this did not help.
Is there a misconfiguration with the stock rom? Or maybe the GPU in the phone is completely fried and the CPU is the only thing running? I tried an Antutu test which ran just fine. I can post results if that helps.
I am considering installing Lineage OS on it and seeing if that makes the trick. But I want to be sure that this is a software issue before I spend all that time on a phone that might not work.
Thank
UPDATE:
The phone randomly restarts at times so I'm suspecting that the motherboard is to blame. I opened it however and nothing suspect was found.
Installed latest version of lineage os (15.1) and got youtube playback, audio playback. There's just no audio from the speakers or headphone jack but connects to bluetooth just fine. When attempting to take a video with the camera application, the camera app just crashes and says that it can't communicate with the camera.
Am I right in assuming its the mobo?

Flash a different ROM (I suggest Nitrogen OS) and see if the problem persists, that'll give you a better idea.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Labs
Thanks @Akhilesh S V!
I flashed nitrogen OS and original problem persists: I cannot take any videos as the stock camera app crashes when trying.
Otherwise, phone reacts pretty normally and can play video, play music and whatnot. What must I do to fix the camera app? This was a clean flash onto Nitrogen OS.

Camera is a problem in new Android versions. Did u flash stock lollipop rom or just factory reset the phone. Maybe some binaries got messed up. Intead of factory reset, try flashing the stock lollipop rom from google, deleting everything so better backup stuff. That rom had the most stable version of camera for mako. If the problem persists there then there's no hope on any other rom. As for hardware checks there are a lot of apps so u can do that.
My Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has been giving me wierd problems lately. It is running on stock Android and never meddled with any software. I was just speaking to someone over phone and it suddenly rebooted.
Ever since on trying to make a call, the phone hangs up, shows System UI and Phone not responding and reboots. No application is able to play any video. It just stays up as paused. No sound is coming out from any apps.( Tried checking the ringtone for basic sounds and stuff). Everything else works perfectly. No signs of lag. This message is being written from the device itself.
These are what I tried to do :
1. I did a factory data reset, wipe cache.
2. Tried reverting back to previous update.
3. Reflashed the Entire ROM using the flashall_aft.cmd.
Same issues coming up. I am sensing some hardware issue. Not dropped , neither had any liquid damages. All happened suddenly.

I think it is a hardware problem. Go to the service center and repair the phone.
Exact same issue

Bro, Facing the exact same Issue. I even tried flashing custom ROM and the problem still persists. Did you fix it? I can't go out because of the Virus as of now.

Hello There, I received my phone from the service centre today. It is still the same as before. No improvement. What bugs me is that everthing else works fine. I checked playing PUBG too. Except audio all was good. The service centre was keen on changing the board. Did you find any sloution.

Edit:
It seems that if I pull up any video through MX Player it starts playing, without audio though. The audio button shows audio track as disabled and doesn't allow me to change it to Track 1.
I believe, if am not wrong, my device is unable to process audio anywhere. Do you think any part of the motherboard is at fault and could it be tweaked for that??

If I access YouTube through Google Chrome in desktop mode, videos start playing.
So basically any app that processes audio along with video isn't working. For eg: Whatsapp vidoes work if I play them via MX Player but no in the app.
Hence I can't place or receive calls too.
I guess MX player decodes audio seperately, so it plays videos well.

Yes!!!
Although I'm using it for scrolling through Facebook, Instagram (videos without audio ofcourse), for reading journals and minor gaming.
Using a spare one for calling . Serves my purposes for now.
Will tell you if there's any development.
