Videos didn't save on S4 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Device: Samsung Galaxy S4
Model: GT-I9505
Android Version: 5.0.1
Running: Official
Essentially what happened was that I was taking videos when I went to see some bands. These videos were varying between 3 to 7 minutes long and I am sure I stopped filming as I kept the app open in between songs. One video had managed to save correctly and it was 5:58 minutes at 732MB.
I had gotten the impression that the videos just didn't save correctly as the LOST.DIR folder on my SD got ~3GB larger that night and there are some files that are around the size that the videos would've been (~400MB to ~1000MB). If these are the actual videos, is it possible for me to recover the videos from these files or are they not in a recoverable state?
I really hope I can at least get some light shed on this situation.
(I would've added pictures to show some of the files but this is my first post and I can't share links)

get a half decent file browser and rename them to match the file extension of the working video. you might need to move them or delete the .nomedia file before they'll show up in your gallery

I've renamed some of the larger files with the .mp4 extension in LOST.DIR and I tried opening them (I did this with ES File Explorer) and I couldn't open them. I had the messages "Sorry, this video can't be played" and "File has incorrect data"

gallery ignore folder

Hi Guys,
I googled a way to hide folders from showing up in the gallery, because i have some folders with pictures that i do not want to see in the gallery, such as scanned documents etc.
I came across this fix of adding a blank '.nomedia' file to the folder i want ignored.
However, i then ran across this issue where adding nomedia file will delete all the media files in that folder (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3692)
Does anyone know if this has been fixed in Froyo? because i don't want to risk putting this .nomedia file and then losing all my documents.
thanks
I haven't heard of the issue of nomedia file issue but I do know that you can create any folder with a "." at the beginning and the gallery and media players will ignore it.
.photos or .scans will make the folder hidden
I've never had that probem with .nomedia either....but you can try what was posted above.
what about album arts? I want it to show up on music player, but not photo and video gallery, which it has unfortunately picked them up.
how do i turned off the display of such media files in gallery?

I use photovault to hide images i dont want to show up in gallery. It works like a charm. It costs 1$ but it's totally worth it.
btw would it be possible to only use specified folders for media files? like putting .nomedia in the root-directory and then something like a ".ThisIsMedia" file into the videos, photos, mp3 folders?

gallery directories

Anyone know how to have the gallery not scan every directory on the SD card. Right now it's showing anything that is an image anywhere.
So I see folders with all my mp3 covers, all the cache for any installed app. It's a bit much and really annoying.
make a blank file in notepad on your computer called ".nomedia"
Do not include the quotes obviously. Save it as all files, and not as a text file.
Now with your epic attached and mounted to your computer in mass storage mode, copy this file .nomedia to every directory you dont want scanned for pictures and music.

Awesome, this is great. Thank you.
this works for most things but breaks music.
if you put a .nomedia in a directory with music then the music player doesn't show music in that folder. so i still have a bunch of galleries show up with album covers in them.
hopefully a new update will allow users the ability to filter out which directories to display and such. i too am having the same issue and its very annoying.

Video thumbnails

Is it possible to alter the thumbnails of the videos on the Tab?
my 3 year old uses it a lot (so obviously he can't read) and I have quite a few videos on there, I would like to alter the thumbnails to another part of the video like I do with the ones for his iPod (I'm trying to ween him of the iPod and onto the Tab, he already uses my Desire more than the iPod)
can anyone help with this?
for example he has 9 videos on there that are spin-offs to the Disney film "Cars" and they all start the same so the thumbnails for them all are the same and there's no filename their either (he can recognise numbers but there's nothing for him to see)
Any help with where the thumbnails are stored and how I can change them?
thanks
I have my each video stored in a folder with a thumbnail image of the movie poster. When I go to my gallery it shows the thumbnails

What do you name the thumbnails?
Does it show them in the "video" app?

[Q] Desire HD Photo naming.

Dose any know a work around to this problem, when i take a picture or make a video on my D HD it gose into the cam shots folder. Now becuase i have folders on my SD card for pictures and videos of diffrent things i use astro to move the files from the cam shots file to the one i want e.g.holiday in spain. The problem is that every time the cam shots folder is empty the next picture or video you create will start with the file name IMG0001. This means that if you then move that file it will conflict with the name of other file with the same name already in the folder. i am forever having to rename files one by one. Any ideas to solve this would be of great help.

Videos showing up in Gallery app

I put some tv shows on my Nexus 5 but now they show up in the Gallery app. How do I make it so only photos show in Gallery? Under my storage settings the videos show up as Misc. storage instead of videos. I just used Android File Transfer to drop the files.

Make sure the videos are in a different folder than your photos.
In the videos folder, create a file (I use ES File Manager, you can use a computer too) called .nomedia (just like that, starting with a period).
Restart the phone and the videos won't show up, but you can access them thru a file manager or media player etc.
edit: If any of that was confusing, I have attached a .nomedia file. Just extract the zip file and you will have the file I am talking about.
Any folder you put this file into the contents will not show up in the stock gallery app.

This is because Gallery is the stock Android video player, so it is supposed to show videos!
My personaly recommendation is to ditch the stock Gallery and use QuickPic instead (free on store) which as well as being a far better image viewer (including immersive mode statusbar hiding!) also has the ability to hide videos from the main list, plus the ability to hide any specific folder your want from the main view.

Thanks it seems to have worked even though no file showed up in the folder. How would I remove the .nomedia since it seems to be invisible?

You can see it on a computer, also there should be a setting in ES Explorer to view hidden files.
Found it.
If you use ES File Explorer.
click on the top left, hit Tools, then near the bottom there's a "show hidden files" option.
