So after being a long time apple user and long time iTunes hater ... I managed to sell my iphone 4 and bought a samsung galaxy S4, did the same for my other half...
Keep in mind, this is a brand new, no-root, default phone.
The issue basically is notifications, for whatsapp ( at the moment since I haven't set up anything else that requires push, besides gmail). The issue is once I turned the screen off, either manually or by itself. whatsapp notifications randomly stop arriving until I turned on the screen, completely close the app and open it again, the same goes for 2 other devices ( 3 in total), this happens with wifi or mobile data
Device #1. new s4,
Device #2 new s4
Device #3 Samsung galaxy young running 4.1.2 JB.
Now, device #3 belongs to a friend of mine who told of these issues a couple of months ago, however I did pay attention as I just figured it was network connection or wifi or whatever be it.
I've googled the hell out of this and it is apparently an android issue:
it's not telco related in my case, because i had NO ISSUES on my iphone 4 nor my best half's 4s.
Anyway, hopefully someone here has been through something similar and been able to fix it? I've searched the forums and there's apparently a widespread issue, but not fix as of 4.2.2?
New to the forum, I originally posted this here

I emailed whatsapp support, got and automated response, i'll post if I get any updates

Hi,
I just recently switched to a samsung galaxy s4 ( two actually, one for me,
one for GF), before that we used iphone 4 and 4s, never had an issue with
whatsapp notifications until I switched this passed friday. The issue is
once the phone goes into sleep mode, be it mobile data or wifi, I have to
force close the app and open again to receive notifications that I got
hours ago if I don't continously check.
I've googled the hell out of it and found your FAQ, as well as plenty other
sites with the same issue except no solution.
From your FAQ:
1. tried re-installing directly from direct download link (
http://www.whatsapp.com/android/current/WhatsApp.apk) and not from play
store
2. tried rebooting.
3. notifications are set properly
4. google+ is disabled ( hangouts) ( tried enabling it, same result)
5. Wifi is set to always on.
Note this is on stock, brand new phones and apparently it's a wide spread
issue:

Sadly, both
Do you lock the screen while whatsapp is open? Or do you choose whatsapp and then lock the screen?
If whatsapp is still running and on the screen, and you lock the screen, it's like the app just stops checking.. I've had this with multiple phones and its a whatsapp problem, not the phone.

So basically your solution was leave whatsapp on screen and push lockscreen?

No, the opposite. For me, whatsapp only worked and checked for msgs if i closed the app and then locked the screen. I would usually come back to the homescreen or something. But if i locked over whatsapp, it would stop checking or take a really long time.
But since you say you've done both, I'm kinda stumped.

I have tried that as well :/
Currently trying to installing .763, updated from .762, but whatsapp servers are probably getting busted as can't even verify my number.
Bro install Whatsapp+.
Google and download the apk, install and see if it helps.
If not, the only way is to root the S4 and install push notification fixer from play store. It modifies andriod to check for msges every 5mins. That will solve your problem for sure.

Hey mate,
I've probably tried all apps or methods by insanity to try getting this problem fixed. Unfortunately, nothing positive turned out.
Now I'm trying to off my screen when whatsapp is open, however, I still think it's unbelievably stupid to do so even if it works to get push notification. How can I go back to whatsapp whenever i wanna put the phone back in my jeans pocket? It then seems whatsapp would become the new homescreen?!?!?
Anyone got a real solution to this???
Also having this problem. Screen off, screen on - sometimes whatsapp just doesn't want to receive/send messages. Other times it's working properly.
Have you guys disabled Samsung Push? Have you disabled any system apps at all? Also, do you have the problem even when your phone has a good signal?
I'm also trying to find out the reason for this problem.

I do disable some system app like weather, finance and stuff like those. To me, what I can confirm is the independence of problem from the signal strength since I've been using the same service provider before upgrading to Jelly Bean and there used to be problem free with the push notification.
This is the result I got last night:
- open whatsapp -> close whatsapp -> homescreen -> screen off = no push
- open whatsapp -> close whatsapp -> free ram -> screen off = no push
- open whatsapp -> screen off = push
Conclusion:
- it is not related to free ram
- it is the problem that the andriod system turn off the app upon screen off (or sleep)
Plus.
I tried installing Push Notification Fixer to introduce "heartbeat" to maintain the connectivity, unfortunately, it DOES NOT work in my case.
Let's keep in view the development. At least we are not alone and hope either Whatsapp or Google can fix this.
Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417
It's a thread which guides you how to disable some allegedly useless google services in order to save battery life when idle. It works, but I think it might have been what's caused my whatsapp to go crazy. I even asked in the thread and some others have the same problem.
But if most other people in this thread haven't disabled said google services, that doesn't make any sense.
Mate. Trust me i know this issue exist on all andriod. i googled the hell out of it because i quarrelled with my partner a few times due to delay in replies. its just the way the kernel is written for stock andriod. you can try everything but it wont work. your only solution is to root and install push notification fixer from play store.

This isn't an issue with android it's an issue with whatsapp. Every android phone I've ever owned has had this issue with whatsapp. Whatsapp need to update their app so it still notifies if it was the last app open whilst the screen locks.
I just press home after I reply and let it lock its second nature to me. The bug is in whatsapp where if it is the last displayed whilst screen lock notifications don't work. You could try changing the conversation tone that might help.

That's wrong... It was perfectly fine, instantly receiving whatsapp messages in my phone no matter what. Something I've changed caused it to stop working.
My problem isn't only the notifications, it's the actual whatsapp messages aswell. Something killed the Whatsapp wakelocks, now my whatsapp isn't causing any wakelocks and when the phone is idle it does not check for messages.
So basically when I updated to 4.4.2 suddenly I cannot see anymore the Skype icon when active on the top-left corner.
Did anyone noticed this bug too?

It is not a bug, it is a feature of Skype. By default, the most recent version of Skype no longer displays its notification icon. You have to go to Skype notification settings and explicitly request it (check "Skype status" box).
P.S. The default value might also be sensitive to the underlying Android version, which is why many people think that it was caused by Android update.
Yeah it was showing until Skype updated the app. Nothing to do with 4.4.2

Thanks! I just gave it a try it seems to work but I feel like webpages now take longer to load ? Or am I being paranoid? How do you get rid of the "key" icon on the notification bar? It I pull down the notification bar I get a warning saying that my network is probably being surveiled :/

You cant do anything about that, it will say that for all non root Adblockers. The slower page loading is because the Adblocker has to remove the ads first before showing you the site, which results in a delay. So theres not really a way around it.

No, in fact AdAway makes webpages load faster as the ad server is never even reached. HOSTS file blocking is more seamless than a makeshift VPN for blocking ads over the web and in apps. Also no key icon issues.

The way these non-root adblockers work is by using a local VPN. That's what the key icon is for. It means you're connected to a VPN. Your traffic is being routed through this local VPN and that's how they remove the ads.
Hey, have you tried Firefox mobile? Their adblock add on works well, I found.
Only problem I think is that Firefox mobile will sync with Firefox desktop only as I understand it. That might be a problem if you like Chrome on desktop too.

Yeah not by default. I don't have it here to check first hand, but look around in the menus, there is an option to install add ons or plug-ins not sure how they call it.
Once there search "adblock", you'll find what you need.
It works well when I need it, some websites are absolutely not usable if the pop-ups and other sh*t isn't blocked.

Try Adguard. It's the best one I've used. It even blocked ads in apps so you don't have to pay for ad free versions.
https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/overview.html
https://block-this.com/
By far the best non-root adblocker I have ever tried (on my S7) and it takes a lot to impress me. Give it a spin, see how it works for you. It blocks ads everywhere. Browser, apps, etc.,.
As for the key that you see in the notifications, it's only there to alert you that you're connected and all traffic is being routed through the VPN (your adblocker is active).

I actually like this much better than Adguard battery wise. Really amazing that way. The only problem is that I use Unotelly DNS on my phone and this messes it up.

I don't know if you are on MM yet but I noticed that there is a thing under App's (on MM) in settings where you can set what apps draw over e.g.. facebook chat bubbles. I think if you enable your apps that you want notifying you on lock-screen to draw over mode then it may show on lock-screen. Its working so far for my weather updates from google app... I could be entirely wrong and I am using a fairly wonky build of MM but I just thought I would offer my insight Best of luck bud.

I'm sure MM will fix that for you bud!
I do know the struggle, waiting on OTA's for us in New Zealand is painful. On top of the fact that before I went MM I wasn't getting notifications at all, calls missed cause it wasn't bringing the call screen up...all sorts of havoc.
Worst comes to worst you could try factory restore, then do the theme thing that other guy mentioned. You should technically have a default, it's weird you are missing it.

I've been searching high and wide for this specific problem, but for the life of me I can't find it.
My S8 (and a Note8 I just bought) keep showing bloody annoying ads at the bottom of the browser.
It's a bar, with a little notch protruding from the top right of the bar with an X to close it (see attached screenshot).
It happens in the cut-down Chrome and also the normal chrome (if I "Open in Chrome").
I thought it was an app I installed, but the Note8 does it as well with absolutely nothing installed.
Is it the phone, or is it the damn Daily record site?
Can anyone shed light on this, and more importantly how to get rid of the damn thing?
You probably need an ad-blocker for your browser. I use the Samsung Internet browser which has built-in ad-blocker, not sure if Chrome has that feature on mobile.

The ads are from the website you are using and not from the phone.
You can either use a web browser with ad blocking capabilities (samsung browser and opera have adblock I think)
Another option is to use Adhell2, which blocks ads on an OS level, and blocks most ads on the web and in apps as well.

Adhell 2 should work: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/themes/adhell-2-rootless-ad-blocking-t3663559
AdHell 2 took me to MABS, which is supported.
However, after installing MABS (and it works because all the ad spaces are now blank) this stupid notch thing still appears at the bottom, just with something that would otherwise be an ad.
So I would question your assertion that it isn't the phone.. It doesn't seem to be this way on any other phone, only the S8 and Note8. But I'll double-check.
MABS, don't you mean SABS?

It isn't the phone, it's the website. I view the same website in Samsung Internet browser with it's built-in blocker extension capability, and I don't see the ad or any empty placeholder where an ad might appear.
You're using Chrome so you may have to do a bit more work to get the same ad blocking capability since it isn't built in. But it is definitely the website, not the phone.
Regarding AdHell 2, the installation process is a bit tricky, but it certainly does work, although I would say it works too well in some cases, which led me to remove it.
I've got Adhell2 before but I switched to SABS and it works like charm. If you're too fortunate to spend some money you can try Disconnect pro in the Galaxy App store, it works excellent too!

You're right, it is the web page. However, if I open the page in the Samsung browser it has a white band at the bottom (without a notch) that would otherwise hold an advert (I know this because it says "Advertisement" on it!). Do you get this?
So MABS stops the ad coming through, but what's really required is to stop the damn browser giving up all this space to adverts. Is that a fair summary?

I don't get this, as I said I use the adblocker in Samsung Internet browser which can be found and configured in the browser's settings. This completely removes the ad.
Whatever this "MABS" is you've installed is clearly not working properly. To clarify, you mean MABS and not SABS, correct? The one for Samsung devices that I know of is called SABS not MABS.

SABS, yes, sorry.
Gonna give Bromite a try. Ad-blocking version of Chrome.

I've never even heard of Bromite until now. Interesting.
Is there a particular reason why you're tied to Chrome? If not I would suggest just using the Samsung Internet browser or maybe try Brave: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brave.browser&hl=en. Brave is built specifically for blocking ads and increased privacy.
Probably only cos I have the bookmarks in there, and come to think of it I don't really need to sync bookmarks from the desktop either, so probably will start afresh with the Samsung jobby. Looks quite good.. I'm shocked!
Thanks for your help.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by Samsung's browser when I first tried it, I switched to it pretty quickly. I believe Samsung has a Chrome for desktop extension that can sync bookmarks over to the Samsung browser.
