The weirdest thing happened to me today

The weirdest thing happened to me today and I was wondering if anyone can help me identify the culprit.
I was listening to some music when all of a sudden the player (Nitrogen) freezed.
I opened the player again and the songs wouldnt play,
so I looked in the library only to find that there was one song left in my /Storage Device/Music folder.
I have roughly 1.5 GB of music on my 2 GB sd-card.
When I got home I put the sd-card in my cardreader and it says that there's 100 MB of free space left
but when I select all files on the card it shows up as only 300 MB.
When I open the folder it only shows one mp3 file.

- I tried searching for it by file names
- I've got "see hidden folders" enabled
Mind you, I do have a backup,
just wanted to see to it that it doesn't happen again.
Update: It happened for a second time now
I formatted my sd-card and while I was copying 2 mp3 files from my computer to my sd-card, (all the files were still there) a message popped up stating that it failed and I should check if the file wasn't protected
After the message popped up all of the files inside the folder were gone (including album art)
Again, there is little free space but all the folders combined equals no more than a few hundred MB.
It would be appreciated it if someone could help me out

I work for a company who sell a lot of memory cards and the returns dept see this a lot, you should get acronis disk director and reformat the card as NTFS (most come as FAT32) When the write to the card fails it is usually because FAT32 will not take as large a file for transfer due to size restrictions, NTFS does not have these restrictions.
I have seen this work in some cases, however if it does not solve the issue then i suggest you send the card back.

My bet would be it's a fake (not genuine) card. Such issues are pretty common with them.

Do mind that if you do this, the card can no longer be used to flash your device, as that requires FAT32. Also, I'm not completely sure about the normal compatibility with the X1, but I guess you can give it a try.

I tried your method and at the moment it seems stable.
You say it's usually because FAT32 won't accept large files (larger than 4GB if I remember).
But my largest file is an episode of American Dad (100MB)
Anyway, thanks for your help. Luckily it's just a 2GB card

I usually flash my device using the RomUpdateUtility.
Are there any pro's or con's using the card flash method?

It's a genuine Nokia MicroSD card.
It came with my device so I presume it's real.

I had a similar problem with my sandisk 8gb card but it just stopped working altogether while i was using tomtom, i tried to format with windows and a panasonic sd-card formatting tool but it would not work.
I had to phone sandisk for a replacement yesterday but im still awaiting there reply

i tried using acronis but it only shows my hard drives and not flash drives, would not mind a last ditch attempt to save it if you tell me how??

i had the same problem with a 8 GB card.
installed some tool to format the card under windows mobile took ages and i ran out of battery ... now the card is totaly unreadable. not even windows recoknizes it anymore.
guess its borked now

I am unsure as to why your card is not visible by the Acronis suite, have you tried looking in disk management on the OS to check if the PC can see it as attached?
As Angelusz has stated you will not be able to flash firmware with the Card after changing the format, however the Acronis suite will allow you to create a small partition of FAT32 on the same card that could be used for this purpose. I do not know if the Xperia will recognise both partitions and display that you have two seperate cards, if anyone has tested this can they please post their findings.

windows recognises the card in my computer but when i try to explore or format it my computer hangs, forever, then normally displays an error message an hour later....
i originally installed acronis a while ago to create partions for backtrack 3, when i did this i dont remember any other drive except my HD's being displayed maybe its the version of acronis im using???
also my X1 does not see the card at all though, "there is no storage card installed", however when i plug the card into the phone when it is sleeping the phone wakes up???

Sorry to say this but i think you card is indeed knackered. Just buy another, they are really cheap these days (even the non faked ones) It would be easier on your own sanity to bin it and move on.
Oh and i'm using the latest version of acronis, just checked but i dont think it makes much difference as it seems to be more or less the same UI and functionality.

Memory issues on note?

Hi guys.
I'm going to be buying the note in the next couple of days. I'm aiming for the 16gb version. Just reading through quickly about the micro sd cards and the fats problems, I'm wondering if that's an issue when viewing movies stored in the sd card instead of the main memory.
I know that the notr wont allow the sd card to store applications similarly to the galaxy s3 but that's not a big problem as the use of the note will be mostly for travelling, internet etc.

I am not sure what you asking. Can you explain what exact problem you found in Note?

As of right now the Note 10.1 doesn't support exfat for the microsd card so you are limited to fat32. Thus you cannot have a file over 4gb in size. Other than that there is no problem. Movies and such play just fine off the sd card. I'm assuming that it will get exfat support as it is supposed to support 64gb sd cards which normally ship as exfat and are a PITA to get formatted as fat32.

You can you format the card as NTFS and give this app a shot. (ROOT REQUIRED! )

NTFS supports files over 4GB, so 720p or 1080p mkvs woun't be a problem!
Also this solution is better because ntfs has support on all OSes (pc, *nix). Exfat has limited support on linux (exists as paid or free alfa driver).

It's a total PITA. If you have another Android device with a MicroSD slot you can try formatting the card in that device first. A lot of people have had luck that way. I tried reformatting a 64GB SanDisk card to FAT using multiple different programs and the Note still wouldn't mount the card or give me the formattng option. Here's the solution, I know it's stupid.
1) Download EaseUS Partition Manager (it's free) - http://www.partition-tool.com/landing/home-download.htm
2) Take a blank FAT MicroSD card and mount it to your PC
3) Have the 64GB mounted at the same time so it too shows up on your PC
4) Using the clone wizard, clone the FAT card to the 64GB card. Make sure to expand the size of the 64GB card before cloning so it doesn't pick up the size of the smaller card.
It's half-ass but works. I'm really hoping exFAT support comes in an update. The SGS3 handles it and the Note’s guts are pretty much the same. It may not though because the user manual specifically says "your device supports FAT."

32GB. Also, they changed the specs on the U.S., UK, and HK sites to a maximum SD card size of 32GB. So unless you do the gymnastic approach I posted to get a 64GB card from exFAT to FAT, 32GB is the limit for storage expansion.

How to expand the 64GB? I have 32 and 64 but whatever I do I cannot expand the 64gb.
Did you mean I should format it in Fat32 to 64GB?
I actually used EaseUS to format the 64GB SD in Fat32 and it seem to work. Did not use clone just copied thze files afterwards.

Was it a SanDisk SDXC 64GB card? I tried everything including EaseUS to format it in to FAT but the Note still wouldn't mount it or provide the option to format it itself.
If anyone does have to use the clone process like I did, here's how to get the full 64GB on the exFAT card being formatted. In the last step of the process EaseUS shows bar graphs of the FAT card and exFAT card stacked over each other. The 64GB exFAT card will show the protected partition and 32GB of space allocated. Grab the end of tbe box showing 32GB and slide it to the right to expand it to the full 64GB available on the disk.

Yes, it's a SanDisk Ultra 64GB class 10 microSDXC.
The main point was for me not to format it in exFAT or NTFS as my Win7 offered but with EaseUS to normal FAT32 and set cluster size to 32 or 64KB (I 4got).

32kb cluster size is the sd card association recommendation.

Hi all. Have a quick question about sd cards. I have an M8 now and a pure on order my question is can I swap cards back and forth between the two phones? Or is the card formatted for that specific phone? TIA

You should be able to swap back and forth, particularly if the SD card formatted as FAT32.

If you have a Mac, mount the card on it and check Disk Utility. It'll tell you. I can't remember what you have to do on Windows. There's probably some app for Android that'll tell you, too, though I don't know what it would be. I was looking for one awhile back. ES File Explorer and Solid Explorer don't, afaik. It's possible that whatever you used for the M8 to format it will tell you. Ultimately, it won't matter one way or the other if the card works on the Moto X. No harm is likely in swapping it in and giving it a try, though a backup (of the sd card) is always in order if there's even the remotest concern. If it doesn't get recognized by the Moto X, and it turns out that it's ExFAT, you could copy the data off of it to a safe place, format it as FAT32, then copy the data back again. Formatting in with Disk Utility on a Mac is quick and easy. Again, I don't remember for sure what you have to do on recent versions of Windows. I formatted one recently on Win 10 and I think I had to use the command line. Formatting used to be available from Windows Explorer. Maybe it still is.

Wouldn't NTSF be a 1000x better though fat goes by box layers. One block goes corrupt and the whole file falls to pieces. Sometimes the entire SD card.

NTSF is not natively supported by Android. There is an app or two on the Play Store that'll allow the device to read NTFS and a couple of other formats. I think some people have formatted external sd cards to ext4 (that's what the internal storage is usually formatted to) with some success. I haven't tried that.

I pulled the SD card out of my M9 and put it in my MXP and it worked fine... All my pics and movies were there and accessible.

Error moving data to SD card

Hi everyone,
I just bought a Micro SD evo+ (Samsung 64 GB) for my moto G plus. I formatted it as an internal storage. I moved few of my apps. However, I dont know how to move music and photos. There is no option for that. In the SD card menu, when I click on migrate data, it says "There was an error in estimating the data to be moved".
I was wondering if anyone can help me please.

It's due to the security features of Marshmallow.
There is no permission for direct write access to sd card by default.

I had to format my SD card as a portable storage in order to migrate my photos and music. However, in that case, App data cannot be saved on the sd card. As an internal storage, the Apps can be saved on sd card but I could not migrate my photos and music. It is posdible that it has something to do with the Marshmallow security. I have also heard that such issue exists for 64 FB cards. I d be certain if one could try a 32 GB sd card.

But is there a solution? How do you actually make it work?

When you format the SD as "internal storage" you don't have a SD anymore, it's all one big storage space.
If you format the SD normal, then the photo and video app (and other apps like maps) might let you save on the SD - will be inside each app settings. But the apps cannot be moved on SD.

My experience with it is same as above. If you format it as internal it makes it added as virtual drive space. Kinda like adding an external drive to an Xbox. It make it virtual hard drive. Formating at removable makes it slower but an be used as raw storage standalone and removable.

LOL, this has been discussed dozens of times on XDA going back to the Moto G3. Even with it used as internal, there is actually very little space it will save you when you discount system apps and the apps that developers block from installing to the SD.

Actually people don't realize that they need a premium SD to even come close of the speed that internal storage has. They buy crappy SD from eBay and expect to launch apps from that... ridiculous. That's why MM imposed those restrictions.
To be used as adopted storage, the SD needs to be at least "UHS I, class 3", with 90MB/s read and write speeds.

Thanks for the useless reply. While it is true that performance will be better with faster cards there's no definite reason other cards should not be able to be used and your reply does nothing to address the original posters question. Has anyone found a solution or shall I look into wiping my phone and installing ubuntu?

Try clearing cache and then migrate.

Format microSD as ext4?

Is it possible to use a microSD formatted to ext4 in our phones? It's come to the point where I could store all my music on a single 256GB card instead of streaming it all the time, but many of my filenames are not FAT compatible and I don't want to rename if I don't have to.

I was struggling with 256GB microSDXC too. The only way seems to be custom, not stock-like ROM which wasn't a good choice in my case because I'm not good with high handheld temperatures. Finally i went with exFAT because I need large file support.
