Vulkan API - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if we can take advantage of vulkan api in android N when it comes out? Not officially, but third party like CM14 or something in the future.

Vulcan API will be official in Marshmallow N.

I think it is easier to tell the original poster a resounding "NO" as I highly doubt that the Note 4 will be even able to get Android N without some really good porting.

Can someone confirm this is still a limitation for note 4?

I'm not really good at porting, but it should be easy. The 3 problems are
kernel
HW accel with GPU
Touchscreen
The first one is really easy since if you cannot run a Mer stock / customized UI, you can still take Android one.
For the second, it is the trickiest, but you can still use mesa-llvmpipe (no HW accel, but only software)
For the thirst point, it is up to the screen manufacturer. Some provides linux drivers, some do not. But for Android, it might be highly probable that a driver is provided.

Released ... for Android.
Because SW architecture are not the same
You need an X11 driver etc.

We will check if it works. Maybe the support for the HW in the Nexus 4 is good ...
But for the Nexus 7, it is nearly sure that it works. Something similar (Ubuntu) were ported on it ...
Has Google still not been able to release all the source code for the Nexus 4?
Disgusting if so.

You mean Ubuntu for Tablets? If so then the Nexus 4 should also possibly be able to get a Sailfish port. They release Ubuntu for Phones on the Nexus 4 the same day the UfT port was released for the N7.
Bump.
It's been 9 months since the last post on a Nexus 4 port of SailfishOS. Has someone brought this baby to term? Anyone know if there's an ongoing effort?
There is no sources or devices released. Theres only the x86 based sdk. So what do you can be ported? The x86 sdk to arm cpu? Never. And the Sailfish ui is proprietary so sources wont be released. If you want Mer with the default ui, sources can be downloaded from the Mer-projects website

That's great news! If I understand correctly he flashed CM and then patches it with libhybris+sailfish. That makes me hope for easy patching to other devices too...

Thanks for showing this. It would be nice to see another minute or two to demonstrate how sailfish performs on Nexus. Perhaps this is still at early stages. Are you able to provide instructions and location of files? Thanks again!

No files or anything else have been made available yet. It might be too early yet, but now any hope we might have had has gained some solid foundations
No news about the port to Nexus 4 ? I can't wait to try it.

I wish they would at least show a demo of how they did it. That way we could try making some progress with other devices awhile

Is Vulkan API coming to Zenfone 2?

I just heard that Vulkan API is coming to mobile and it is supporting PowerVR chips like the one we have on the phone.
(PowerVR G6430). Some people say on the ZENTALK forum that that's why it takes so much freaking time for Asus to implement Marshmallow as they are busy incorporating the API on the phone.
If this is true just image the gigantic boost it will give to our phones! (just watch on Youtube or search on Google for more information about Vulkan API)
If Vulkan API is implemented at our phone it would be fantastic. Hope Asus will work on the API and make the best for our phone, let's see in a couple of months of so
Too good to be true man, too good to be true.
hi, I'm very interested in everything about vulkan since i could see some videos about it. But my knowledge about api, android and rom's is not that good, so i would thank you if i could get some answers.
1 - Is this implementation of API a work for ASUS or Intel?
2 - Since i saw that PowerVR Rogue has now SDK(i dont know what it is) for Vulkan, Is ANYONE able to make a custom rom that could use Vulkan?
3 - I've heard that Android N will have native support for Vulkan. Does it mean that if i download a custom rom, like a cyanogenmod, for Android N to my Zenfone 2 i will have the benefits of using Vulkan?
4 - Does anyone know if that Galasy S7 that had 135k+ on antutu was using Vulkan? Because my Zenfone 2 is a great phone and only scores 65k, it's scary to thing that a S7 should have more than the double of hardware capacity that my Zenfone has. I thing that should be because of vulkan, but i need to hear it from someone who knows what's talking.
I hope to get answers for this questions. Thank you all.

Sorry, that's not how ASUS usually manages fixes and updates. That would take time and money and we've already spent our money so they have nothing to gain, therefore nothing will happen. Only future customers are a priority for ASUS.
A happy ASUS customer is one with low expectations.
Well, at least It'd give Asus a good excuse for being so late...
Vulkan is something that would need to be implemented at the OS level on Android (mainly the kernel, no idea what other bits Google is including in the rest of the OS). And support for each hardware would need to be provided by the OEM or manufacturers. It MAY be possible for a custom ROM to implement Vulkan support in some fashion in a current version of Android (harder and more "impossible" things have been accomplished) but it's not likely due to too many technical challenges. Besides, it wouldn't happen until after Android N is released and the AOSP code is posted. Only then would someone attempt to backport Vulkan.
I'm not 100% sure, but I do believe that Vulkan support will be a requirement by Google for devices to run Android N. So if Asus does plan on upgrading the phones then they will need to include a kernel for the hardware that supports Vulkan and those drivers would come from Intel. So the chance of the Zenfone supporting Vulkan is 100%, provided Asus upgrades it to N.

So is the VULCAN API present in the M update?
Is Vulkan something like the Mantle for Desktops?
EDIT:
Vulkan Drivers for Nexus Player
Google’s Android Image
As part of the Android N Developer Preview 2 release, Google released an Android N image for the Nexus Player that includes Vulkan drivers. You can find out more about the Android N Developer Preview here and can download the image here. As this image is officially supported by Google, we recommend using it for Vulkan Android development.

There is two possibilities:
1- Vulkan added in Android N's mainline code, and CM14 (maybe) will do this too.
2- Vulkan driver will be only in manufacters Android N's source. In this case, will be needed to be backported.
In both possibilites, isnt impossible to do it, even without Asus help. But would be awesome if some official MM give it to us (not in the first version, obviously).
Its GPU manufacturer job to implement vulkan, they provide the drivers to OEM manufacturer implement it on their otas. Nvidia already did that on latest MM update to shield TV and shield tablet.

does this phone supports vulkan?

i'm wondering, if this phone supports vulkan api for future-proof gaming. like the note 7!

It will as soon we get Android N , but rest assured this device will have Vulcan support.
I have the Axon 7 running stock Marshmellow 6.0.1 and can conferm that it does not support the Vulkan API yet. Hopefully it will get support with Android Nougat.
No Vulkan until Android 7
does it supports now? hit game cant turn on 6 grafics settings also NFS no limits no high reflections? B16 nougat A2017
The Adreno 530 supports it.

Thinking of getting a Note 4

I like look of the Note series for the size and the stylus. The Note 7 looked great before it was recalled. The Note 5 doesn't have microSD. So I am left with Note 4.
Some questions:
- Is the OS updated on the Note 4 and does it perform well? If not, is there a good clean modern ROM with Android 7+ for the Note 4?
- Will I get multi-user accounts? I am developing software and would like to show it off on this phone. So I need a dedicated user account for demoing.
- It will be the UK version so Snapdragon 805 I think. I see this processor has HEVC decoding. Does hardware HEVC decoding work in practice?
I know the android ecosystem has major problems with updates and vendor alterations so I would like to avoid these issues.
Thanks for any info!

Well, I have a 910C which is an exynos version. But I can tell you that samsung is pushing security updates every 2-3 months for each countries clean CSC. I don't think we'll be getting official Android 7 though. And to use the multiuser feature you will have to use a custom ROM like cyanogenmod. (ROMs are more available in snapdragon variations, they even already have an android 7 port)
No idea on HEVC, but I'm guessing it's functional.

Beyond Nougat

Hi,
Is is possible to develop ROM for the Note 4 beyond Nougat? Lets say Android 10 for Note 4?
Or is it a matter or hardware?

Note 4 Snapdragon has already android 9. And it depends on the will of the developer to go to android 10 or not. The developer might or might not be able to do it according with the hardware and software limitations.
Note 4 Exynos has HUGE issues for development due to the Samsung proprietary closed sources.
Go read on the forums and educate yourself.
