Anyone crack the screen on their S7 edge - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

I've had this phone since day one. I've been very happy with the phone. I have a case on the phone but I can not get a tempered glass to fit correctly, so I have not had any screen protector. I placed the phone on my desk at work and if it dropped 1-2 inches to the desk that is a lot. When it turned the phone over the screen was cracked from the right side of the finger print scanner to the left of the screen.
I do have insurance with Asuron. So I give them a call and the Silver S7 edge is not available, heck no S7 edge is available. So now the claim is on back order. Also, the deductible is $199 for the phone. I've had insurance on my lines for 10+ years a drunken I haven't had a claim since the htc ThunderBolt. I'm thinking of switching to the regular S7 cause then I can get a tempered glass.

Regular s7 doesnt have tempered glass either.. atleast for now.

Remember that new phones come with what they call 2.5D glass (where glass curves ever so slightly on the edges, typically into the frame) and because of that there are still some issues with tempered glass.
It sucks your screen broke but maybe getting a case with a lip is better than new phone. Just my two cents.

I bought a case from my local 'Five Below' store for $5. Also bought a screen protector from Amazon for $8.
I've dropped my phone a few times now and so far no cracks or scruffs.

I received my warranty phone from Asurion and I guess because the phone was on back order I got a completely new phone. It came on the Samsung box with all the accessories. Now I'm going to buy some sort of screen protector.

[Q] Anyone not using a case or bumper or screen protector at all?

Despite my concerns about the glass back on the Nexus 4, I went ahead and got one, for various reasons (my other leading contender was a HTC One X+).
But I hate cases. Just wondering if anybody who has had the Nexus 4 for a while has been using it without a case or bumper (or screen protector). How has that gone? Glass back okay? Cracks? Scratches?

I received my phone at the end of November and didn't have any protection on it. It lasted until this week, when the glass back shattered (not from any impact, I believe it was the result of temperature differences). It had gotten a little bit of wear and tear, with a few hairline scratches on the glass.
If you want to keep your phone in pristine condition, wrap it up. If you're okay with it getting wear and tear, the bumper should be fine. If you go bare, I believe it's probably just a matter of time before something happens.
I've been using the Nexus 4 with a Diztronic case and it seems fine, however I'm still awaiting an OtterBox for my Nexus 4.

I'm not using protection... It is just a matter of time before something happens... But in the mean time this phone feels and looks awesome.
I'm an architect and it has always bothered me to cover up nice design... Though, I do wish they had prioritized durability in their design criteria...
P
I got n4 when it first came out so there were no decent cases around. I used my phone naked for about two weeks and ended up with three scratches on the back and a few more on the bezel.
I now have the LG bumper and a screen protector on the back. The front is holding on line a champ though so im not using protection.
I got the scratches because the phone feel of my desk twice (be careful is really slippery).
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
not a single scratch!
The phone comes with a screen protector on the back that is so clear and thin, that I didn't even realize it was there, It has protected the actual phone from scratches. Though a body screen protector is on it's way and a nice hybrid case that covers the front too. I'm not rough with my phones, but my GS2 has almost no bezel left from the nicks. And my hopes are to sell the Nexus 4 for enough to buy the nexus 5 when it comes out (as many people seem to have been able to do that with the galaxy nexus)
Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, for now I've left the plastic covering that comes on the back, since it's not very noticeable anyway. Maybe I'll get a bumper at some point. It's the experiences of people who have the back shatter without any obvious impact that worries me.

Do you have a sense of the particular temperature situation that caused the problem?
Ive got that paranoid over reading threads about the N4 exploding in to a billion shards of glass for no reason i ordered a case before i even ordered the dam phone!

Oddly, it was unseasonably warm last week, with morning temperatures in the mid-40's and highs near 70. I suspect that the phone warmed up from using the GPS (Nexus 4 owners know how warm they can get) and then because I had ambient air coming out of the vents, that cooled it down. Over the course of two months of doing this, it probably weakened the glass and then one day, it all just gave out.
I bought a screen protector for the front and back, the screen looked horrible so took it off. Back protector is still on

I posted about this earlier but I had it less than a week and was so careful with it because of what I read and noticed a hairline crack about a 1/2 inch long starting from the middle edge. No drops or anything. I immediately ordered a Zagg protector and only put it on the back. I'm hoping it stops it from running any further.
I haven't put it on the front because I hate the way it feels, and the Gorilla Glass seems to resist scratches very well; unless you do something stupid like keep it in the same pocket as keys or change or something. I had my SII for almost 2 years with no screen protection and the front glass looks brand new. And the front of this is Gorilla Glass 2 so hopefully it will hold up even better.
I wish they would have used the same glass on the back as the front, but I'm sure the cost would have been too much.

Mines been naked since december and its still good. I have it in a pouch when in my bag to prevent scratches.
My oleophobic coating has pretty much gone though. Screen is no where near as smooth as it was. I'm going to try the fusso liquid coating. Anyone have any experience with this?

Used mine for 2 months without any protection. Fell once on the pavement, got few bad dings on the chrome plastic bezel, guess it's time for a bumper to cover that up. Also has couple of scratches on the back. Front glass looks perfect so far.
I used my first nexus 4 without any protection and after a month, the back glass had lots of scratches and the front only a few ones (usually invisible). Then I had problems with it and I placed a RMA, this one has had from the first day a screen protector and a TPU case.
Got my Nexus 4 a few days ago but was still waiting on my case to come in. I decided not to take off the front and back screen protector that came with it.
Good thing I didn't too because yesterday I was listening to music on my phone. A coworker bumped into me and it fell out of my hand (about chest height) and landed face down. I was in shock and couldn't move for a good 6 seconds. Thoughts were racing through my head. Lol. I was like yup. Only two days in and my phone is shattered. It's done for.
I picked it up and there were a lot of scratches on the screen. My face was so sour. I tried to rub it off but it wouldn't come off. After work, I went inside my car and looked at it again. I decided to take the screen protector off. Lo and behold, the screen was pristine. Not a single crack or scratch. I was so relieved. Lol.
My case finally came in today. I would advise for a case to at least protect the back. I won't be using a screen protector though.

I've had mine since the last week of Nov. I use it 24/7 no case no screen protector. And I stay in Houston where the weather is constantly changing. No issues here whatsoever. Still looks brand new.

I can't stand cases or screen protectors. I carry the phone in the front pocket of my jeans and a case simply makes the phone too bulky to carry for me. Nothing ever goes in the same pocket as my phone, so I don't worry about scratches so much.
That being said, over time there is no way to prevent the back and sides from being scuffed up. Not only that, this phone is pretty slippery totally naked. To solve these two problems, I use Skinomi carbon fiber skins not only on this N4 as I did on my GS2 and my Transformer Prime and dock. I like to keep my devices in mint condition for resale value. I highly recommend.
I've had a Cruzerlite TPU case on my N4 since day one. Still in perfect condition. I ordered the official bumper when it went back in stock last week. I don't like it. Way too slippery, especially compared to the grip the TPU case provides. The bumper looks better, it's sexy, I'll give it that... but the device doesn't feel secure in my hands at all. I went back to the TPU case and I'm returning the bumper.
This is the first phone I've used a case on. I generally hate the added bulk and covering the design. But the horror stories about the glass back are far too numerous to go naked with the N4. The Cruzerlite case is quite thin and I've grown to like it.
I bought case but don't use it .
No screen protector from last 1 month .
I do have protector for back but not any case.
I just be careful not to drop my phone . I did drop it once but it was from 2 feet on the carpet . have no scratch on front or back but screen need to be cleaned cause It gets dirty.
Only scratched I got is on the bezzel and it was due to my case so I stopped using case.

Edge should be able to withstand drops

I'm still wary, but the following article mentions how the Edge's curved display should be able to withstand drops:
http://www.zdnet.com/galaxy-note-edge-curved-display-can-withstand-drops-samsung-7000033342/
My biggest concern is micro scratches. Dry screen protectors and tempered glass seem unlikely with this phone.
I hate cases so the prospect of going "naked" with the edge seems full of potential despair.
I sure hope so.
I want this phone very bad. I'm coming from a note 3 and see it a better upgrade to the edge then the note 4.
I also hope some screen protectors are released day one.
I also am concerned about minor scratches as well. What I'm hoping is that there will be a company that releases a glass screen protector for the Edge which I plan to get and then place it in a sturdy case such as Urban Armor Gear(fingers crossed that they release a case for this phablet as well).
Btw to be clear the internals may survive but the outer glass would not. I imagine screen replacement being very costly since you can't cheaply make substitute glass no ?

I believe it would be the same as other phones.
I just replaced a s4 glass today. The guy got the glass from ebay for $5.
It's pretty much just glass . And the edge would just be curved.
I do hope there is some great bumper case made tho.

But aren't screen, touchpanel and protection glass one unit, glued together, not intended to get seperated or partly replaced?
Btw. I already saw several Note EDGE screen protector films out there. Like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Skinomi®-TechSkin-Replacement-Definition-Anti-Bubble/dp/B00NAJ08YG
I don't think it needs rocket science to produce curved screen protectors for the Edge.
And btw: also a screen protector will likely not save the screen when e.g. dropping on a stone.
And the factory glass/protection is very scratch resistant.
My Galaxy S4 is blemished all around, but the screen still looks like brand new.

Maha hahah.
This helps confirm the nov release of the note egde.
Why would they release a screen protector way before the phone is out.
But Yea the plastic protectors don't stop the screen from cracking they just stop straches.
I would thing that the edge would chip before it just broke. But there is no telling till it comes out and people do some drop testes.
I also hope there are some good cases to protect that edge
*edit
O Yea it's not hard to make curved protectors. My htc sensation had a drip in the middle so the protector had a curve in the middle. It's pretty easy to make just vaccum forming.

How does your S6 edge look like after weeks of usage?

How does your S6 edge look like after weeks of usage? Does it have scratches or other sign of usage? Do you use it 'naked' or protected with a cover? Please post pics of your phone condition.
Thanks.
I bought my 2nd hand S6 Edge.
There are 2 tiny scratch on screen.
(The previous owner use it without screen protector and use with official clear cover case.)
I use it naked. Had a tiny scratch on the back, but I attached a d-brand back so no visible scratches anymore. The front and sides look like new. I git a few tiny scratches on the home button. They are only visible when the light hits it directly.

Mint condition, no scratches or scuffs, no case as i don't like them but i do have a dbrand skin as you can see ?
After months of usage, the only difference in appearance is the earpiece has superficial scratches. Also the screen protector has begun to peel off
I dropped my phone a few times already. I have this gel-like case (Ringke) and it's still scratchless. It dropped twice face down. But the Home button, geez. On the FIRST WEEk, yes, FIRST WEEK, it already accumulated a lot of scratches even though I wasn't a Home button guy even on previous phones.
After a couple of months of ownership with no case, I noticed a small scratch on the home button. There's also small scuffs on the edge all around the metal band. Overall, not bad
Unfortunately main looks like a tank that is because cannot stand the battery life of my phone so i decided to buy a this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331562403221 . Now am relatively happy because it save my phone couple of times (landing on concrete)though no scratches what so ever.

Iv had mine in a spigen neo hybrid case since the day it was released with screen protector back and front.
Only damage I have noticed is the fingerprint scanner has small scratches all over it and the flash cover next to the camera scratches very easily!!
I've had full screen protector on and nothing else and it's fine no marks at all I do use a pouch to carry it in, was thinking of getting dbrand skin for the rear but I love the gold/platinum

scratches on screen even though I've been super careful.
I've never had a phone that scratches this easily.
even with the faint scratches, one on birth front and rear glass, this has definitely held up much better than previous Corning Gorilla glass versions i've had from previous phones.
I went naked for the first week. both the screen protectors I tried later on annoyed me and so I ditched them. I went through several protectors for the rear and sides. here are how they have faired...

Well I would have posted about how my phone has held up, except I am on my 4th S6 Edge in 5 months. First one fell victim to a water/rain catastrophe, so did an insurance claim, second one had a wonky home button so did a warranty exchange, third one had a malfunctioning recent apps soft key so did a warranty exchange.
Between spending money on Skinomi skins for each and 2-3 hours setting up each phone, I am having the worst run with smartphones ever.
Mine has a nice, large shattered portion on the left of the screen, near the volume buttons. Also has a few other cracks... Love the phone nonetheless.
Faint scratches on the screen then dropped it landed on the corner lucky on a dent
After only four months of use, I had to send mine away for repair due to screen burnin. Worst screen burnin I have ever seen. Sorry, didn't take any pictures of it at the time to show now. Got it back now with a brand new screen.
Where was the burn in? I'm having it on the bar at the top of the screen where all the info is..my wife has it to with her edge

My cases showed up yesterday from Amazon. Still waiting the 28th for the phone. I ordered it along with a tempered glass protector from vzw. It's a shame really how bad this phone has turned out to be for some people.
Verizon stores have the Tech21 cases which I love.... Blew $30 on cases on Amazon I'll be returning. They also have tempered glass screen protectors. $65 for case and screen protector.. A tad overpriced, but peace of mind is priceless?

Sad to see somebody destroying a new device.
I just wonder when he broke the screen how high was that drop.
In real life what is the worst drop you may subject your device to maybe 4 or 5 feet on to concrete, this drop looked worse to me.
Holy cow!!!! That's crazy! I ordered the rhino bumper, glass protector and a bestskinsever.com matte back cover. Hope that's enough! Based on this video, I'm thinking maybe not!
Crazy. You drop glass and it breaks. Why are people so enamored by these.
Not one part of this is a controlled experiment that tells you anything. Could be a loose connection in that unit etc. Until a lab does a test don't give it another thought. Put a case, don't put a case but don't put a case because of this guy's video.

If I'm going to watch a video like this, id pick one that didnt have a jump cut after they drop the phone before it's picked up lol.
Just dropped mine 2 feet and the screen cracked, stopped responding, and started turning purple. Strange thing is it had a tempered glass protector on it that is undamaged. Very disappointed in the screen on this. I don't use cases and I've never broken a phone, especially not one where the tempered glass protector was undamaged.
I've seen TONS of phones with broken screens and intact screen protectors.
People that think they help with drop protection are living in a fantasy land. Why would that tiny piece of tempered glass do anything on a drop? I'll answer my own question by saying it doesn't. Anyone that works at a phone repair center knows that firsthand. It is a placebo.
They do help with scratch protection though, obviously.

That Gorilla Glass 1,2,3,4...100 is just a marketing scheme, and that piss poor back glass design on Pixel just makes it worse
Obviously you've never dropped a phone and had that tiny piece of glass break while the screen is intact. It's happened to me over a dozen times as well as my wife and probably countless others. Just because you've never experienced it doesn't mean it never happens.

I have indeed. But none of those drops would have cracked the MUCH thicker phone screen anyway.
It is basic physics that a 0.2mm piece of glass is going to break before one 5x+ thicker.
There simply is no real shock absorption in that amount of glass.
Can definitely help with scratches and nicks caused by abrasive impact though.

[Question] What is a good brand of tempered glass that works and effective?

So the question is probably familiar from past phones from Sammy such as Note8 or S8/s8+ lol... The consensus from previous reads on XDA and reddit seems to be Whitestone Dome but a lot also gave negative reviews of it due it either lose touch response, or peeling off too easy. I had purchased a full adhesive from aliexpress for my Note8 but could not really use it since I sold the phone to get the S9+ . Anyone has any good recommendation for a tempered glass based on the brands they got for their previous Sammy? I mean recommendation as in, they dropped the phone with it on, like on the corners and the screen survived even though the glass shattered? Case would be great too, as I have a Supcase on the way. Thanks!!
Not the Whitestone then? I was almost about to pull the trigger on getting one for the S9+ but I'm hesitant now.
I've been using Whitestone for myself and my kids, although it has it's fragilities (cold, an snow can alter it) its the best i've tried. I've already ordered mine for the S9+... If i were you get a couple... just in case. As once you've tested it, you won't go back on the side glued ones. You just need to glue it well, and don't be in a hurry.
I've never had issues with touch sensitivity or peeling off (that's even nuts as it's literally glued to the screen, if you break the dome and need to peel it off you should be careful as it's glued it shatters and pieces can jump).
There may be another option now and as upset as I was with the first interation of Zagg's tempered glass screen protector for the s8+, they have come out with the glass curve elite. https://www.zagg.com/us/en_us/invisibleshield/glass-curve-elite-samsung-galaxy-s9-plus/ They say that it has full adhesion. So if it actually works well they supply a lifetime warranty. It is 49.99 so it's expensive but I'm going to give it a shot.
Whitestone was great but with a long installation process, I went for it twice, I'm going to (no offense) pass on Whitestone for my s9+. If there was a tempered glass product for curved screens that was as easy to install as a flat screen tempered glass screen protector, and like a conventional screen protector has good full glass adhesion I'm going to go for that option.
I have tried almost 5 brands but still did not get satisfactory result.
Just pre ordered the white stone. It was the best on the note 8.
Upgrading from two S7 edge to two S9+ (already pre-ordered) I never tried tempered glass on my smartphones because I found them a little too expensive to justify given that I have to buy two glass protectors. The OTAO 3D glass protector looked to be an "inexpensive" way to give tempered glass a try, but someone on the S9 thread about Screen Protectors complained about the OTAO falling off his phone whenever he took it out of his pocket. Some folks have also mentioned that this protector doesn't fully cover the curve edge which makes it "case friendly", but this also make it less appealing. These two negative findings put some doubt in my mind about ordering this specific protector for now. Folks using the S8+ have given this protector a "good" review on Amazon. But I also don't know if most of these reviews are for the "old" version or for the "Updated" version on this protector for the S8+. If there's someone here that has used the "Updated" OTAO protector on a Galaxy phone with a curved screen (preferably the S8+)... can you tell us about your experience? I guessthe "Updated" version is the one being used for the S9+.
I have used Zagg's Invisible HD shields on all my smartphones. I found them to be durable and compatible with many cases. Including cases for the S7 edge.Installing them is a little complex and you need to get it right the first time in order to avoid bubbles and the edges from lifting. I had to return the one that I installed on my wife's S7 edge once because a corner kept lifting and getting dust under it. All I had to do was return the old one and they send me a new one. Once I installed the replacement correctly, it has stayed on her phone for over a year without any issues. I'm waiting for it to be available in Amazon as they're usually discounted. The Zagg website indicates that they're sold out of their Invisible HD shield for the S9+

OTAO have two versions, a case-friendly one, which has to leave a couple of areas exposed for the case to fit, and a full cover one. I have had the case friendly one on my S8 and been very pleased with it. Never popped off. One person complaining his came off should not be taken to be evidence that there is something inherently wrong. There could be two reasons - either his was slightly faulty with not enough glue - no company has 100% quality control - or maybe he didn't press it on hard enough when he fitted it.
I've had two. The first one cracked when I dropped the phone on a marble floor but the phone screen was unmarked. Even though it cracked, it did not pop off. The edges still stuck. The second one is still on the phone.

Thanks for your reply... The complains put "some doubt" in my mind about the protector, I had not concluded that there was something inherently wrong with the OTAO. I posted here because I wanted to hear comments from other folks before I made my decision.
I didn't know that OTAO also made a protector that fully covers the screen, but after you mentioned it... I searched further and also found the OTAO Full Screen Coverage - Double Strong 3D in Amazon. At the same $12 price as the Case Friendly. At this price point, I might get one of each and test them with the case I'm going to use. I'm looking for a slim TPU cases from Spigen, EasyAcc, ESR and Caseologic. Currently, I use a Ringke Slim case with my S7 edge, but given the larger screen size of the S9+; I'd like a more protective setup. What case are you using on your S8 with the OTAO case friendly protector?... Thanks again.

Thanks!!

For my gs8+, I've had good experiences with both the Otao TGSP and the newer full-adhesive ones.
Until a full-adhesive TGSP comes out for the gs9+ from a company I recognize, I'm gonna start with the Otao gs9+ TGSP.

I just ordered the Zagg. Saved £4 using promo code zagg10 at checkout. £36 felt easier to swallow then £40!

I also have an OTAO on my Note 8 - fits beautifully - holds very well - smooth - full responsiveness - no issues at all.

What version of the OTAO are you using on your Note 8 [Case Friendly] or [Full Screen Coverage]? Are you using the "Updated" version that I believe has "full-adhesive"? Are you also using a case and if so... which one?

I'll be working on a buyers guide today and tomorrow it will be on my channel.. In the mean time I posted a thread about a 10 dollar dome glass copy from the supplying factory and their are a few full adhesive glass protectors I'm tested.. All the others are the same generic ones just like the S8/N8
