Screen protector?

Anyone going with a naked screen? I just got a trident case. It came with a screen protector. I like the feel of the glass better. Gorilla glass 2 unscratchable?

Naked but I got a ZAGG on the front of mine!

The screen isn't scratch proof. So if you care about getting scratches kn your screen, then get a screen protector.

you can tell these people till your blue in the face and they just don't get it... all they see is Gorilla Glass and suddenly their devices are supposed to be indestructible...

Get the real clear one you won't feel the different.

serious? the back cover is easily replaceable and cheap to. The screen on the other hand not so much.

I hate screen protectors. I haven't used one since I got Galaxy S OG (epic). It had gorilla glass and it never ever scratched. Got an S2, same thing. I have no reason to think differently on this one either. Besides if by some chance it does, I have BB insurance and will just get it replaced.
And I really hate cases. One of the major selling points of the phone is the sleek design, why would I ruin that with a case??? dumb. but thats just me

Totally nude here. I never use cases or protectors. The last time I scratched a display, it was a resistive screen. I did scratch my work phone Thunderbolt screen though, but I keep it in my pocket with my keys. lol

Nude! Just using a case. I can't find a screen protector I like.

What type do people usually use. I normally never use one, but I bought a Zagg for the front. I also have heard of Spigen, but haven't really found a review that pits them against each other.

I tried a SGP Ultra Nano Clear and it was ok, but I like the ZAGG that I've got on my One X (I know...I'm one of the few that like them!) So, I went by Best Buy today and had them install the ZAGG Invisishield HD on my brand spanking new GSIII. Funny story, though...
The guy that was installing it confessed it was only about the 4th or 5th one he'd installed. But he made a good point...if they do it, they've got multiple chances to get it right, whereas if I did it and screwed it up, I'd have to start over (this is the first wet-install screen protector I've used...the one on my One X was on it when I bought it second-hand).
Anyway, he goes through the process and once he gets done, he tells me that through trial and error, they've come to realize that the ones for the GSIII are better if you install them upside-down. His reasoning was that this way, the front-facing camera is covered (whereas it's usually not). Whatever, I thought...he knows what he's doing.
So, I get in the car and about 5 minutes down the road I realize part of it is overlapping the home button (because, obviously, that part is supposed to be AT THE TOP!) So, I head to the other Best Buy in town (because I'm now closer to it) and I show it to them. The guy just sat there and stared in amazement. He said, when did he install it? I said about 30 minutes ago. His only words? "Dumbass". So, he got another one out and installed it correctly and it's working perfectly. I let it sit in the front seat of my car for about an hour so the heat would cure it and it worked great.
The only downside is that it covers nearly to the edge of the screen and it's just slightly off-center. My favorite case now wants to lift it on that side. Since these things have a lifetime warranty, I may just run back by Best Buy and have them install another one and get it more centered. But as far as the feel and clarity goes, I'm really liking the ZAGG Invisishield HD.

Yea my screens fine unlike the people who drop there phone 24,7. Hate the way if you drop your phone, screen side down it makes a huge crack.

I've ordered a screen protector and a case. Based on the tons of comments I've seen about the screen getting scratched, I am taking no chances with a as device expensive as this.
I went with the highest rated screen protector on Amazon to start with, as well as a $10 TPU case. I might get an Otterbox later if they go down in price or go on sale.

I was looking at Ghost Armour and XO skins. Has anyone used them? They are pricey but have lifetime warranty and look nice.

Any particle of sand is stronger than any Gorilla Glass by the sheer virtue of quartz (sand) having a higher hardness than borosilicate glass (gorilla glass).
Harder substance will always scratch softer ones.

Calling Google about scratches?

I've got a ton of scratches that are pretty deep all over my Nexus 4 that have been appearing since I got the phone. My last phone was an Atrix and after dropping it a few times I never cared to take that good of care with it and it has only very small scratches, none of which near as deep as the scratches I've been getting on the N4 which I take extremely good care of. I was one of the first to receive the Nexus 4. Is it possible that I got a bad phone or has the whole "bad batch" thing just been tossed around? I'm thinking of calling Google and asking but I would like input before that. Maybe I'd prevent wasting someones time... but if this thing really is defective in some way I would like a replacement.

I have the same problem as you. I've only dropped the thing once and I've always stored it in a pocket alone and yet I have tons of scratches all over. So much for gorilla glass. Let me know if you do call what the results are!

The front of mine is still perfect after two weeks. The back has the protector on still and somehow there is a scratch near the camera.... I'm worried about taking it off until I get my case. Here in Toronto the only way to get a case for it is online shopping... My original case order was cancelled and I got scammed in the process so I had to order a new one that'll come in about a month -_-

Did you read the post? Yeah I'll call them out if I get enough people saying they think it could be defective. I've seen a couple threads where people were saying they sent it back for scratches. I'm pretty much asking if people think there was a chance of actually having a defective device and if so could the glass be effected by that.

Glass is glass. It isn't a defect in your phone, you've just had bad luck with the phone and probably sand or other fine particles coming into contact with it.

2. Because it is glass, you would have been wise to invest $6 in a noninvasive front and back body skin to protect it. You don't think you need it, until you realize you did.

1. You didn't have to say "its glass" twice
2. I purchased many different screen protectors and all of them where very annoying. This screen was especially designed to be super smooth and it is super oleophobic. Why ruin the experience with a screen protector?
3. I've heard of people saying that they could be defective and scratched too easily so and they even got an RMA. The person above you seems to have gotten one for the screen scratching. I have had cheap phones that I have taken horrible care of that have no scratches on their screen. I have also heard of people taking awful car of their nexus 4 and talking about how durable it was and how it still has no scratches. I've babbied this thing and had a screen protector on it through November to middle December. This all leads me to believe tat something is not right with the screen.

As you say yourself, the glass on the Nexus 4 is meant to be oleophobic, which means that the glass is covered with an oleophobic coating, which scratches more easily than glass would. You just have to be even more careful with it.

What? The Oleophobic layer is what makes it more scratch resistant. Friction is what causes scratches and if there's less friction then it lessens the possibility of scratches.
I swear people like to talk crazy stuff sometimes. I've had my phone for over a month now (ordered Nov 27 and received Dec 6th). The back of my device is perfectly scratch free now and i'm pretty gentle with my device as well. Dunno wtf you people are doing with your phones but I have no case or anything either and it's perfect still.

Err, no. The oleophobic layer is made of softer material than glass, so obviously it's going to scratch easier. Making something more slippery doesn't make it less easy to scratch.

ADDING the oleophobic coating helps the glass to be more scratch resistant as well as the fingerprints and all that jazz too. Gorilla glass itself is tough but adding that layer helps protect the surface of the Gorilla Glass making it more scratch resistant.
If you want more info, go look up XDA TV and learn something or 2 as well. There was a girl (forget her name now) that explained gorilla glass for her Note 2 device in which she mentioned this as well with more details.

OP, I agree that we shouldn't have to ruin the experience of the phone for the sake of everyday use. I've never had screen protectors and very rarely get scratches while living a fairly active lifestyle.
So far I've not had any scratches on the screen, even cycling with the phone in my pocket. I have been happy with the scratch resistance so far and would compare it to other phones of similar quality.
The back glass has not held up nearly as well, despite sharing the same pocket/conditions. I have a few hairline scratches, particularly over the nexus logo and unfortunately over the camera. My guess is that this happens while pulling the phone in/out of pocket and that is why they are clustered over the logo area.
I'm not sure how much a call to Google will do, can there be quality problems with glass that would cause some to scratch worse than others? QA issues causing breaking seem more likely. To answer your question though, I've not been babying the phone (well, maybe a little) and don't have a hint of a scratch on the screen after a month.

I don't think you can RMA it for scratches after having it for 2 months but it doesn't hurt to call and all they can do is say no.
I myself have no scratches, I should add yet here, and I received mine on November 27th. But it has never seen the inside of my pocket, I bought a belt clip case immediately that it sits in if I'm out and about. IME Pockets are too dangerous as my phones always ended up getting scratched in my pocket because I dropped change in there or put my keys in there by mistake.
I did finally put a screen protector (skinomi) on the front after about a month but I'm not happy with it, it does ever so slightly ruin the experience especially since it is too soft and gets marks in it and it has a dull look to it. But I'm being more than anal about watching out for scratches with this phone as it was an investment. Eventually I'm sure I won't give as **** anymore and start treating it like any other phone but right now paying $400 for a phone still stings a little.

Thanks for the links and I stand corrected. Coming from a Galaxy Nexus, most users found that the display tends to get scratched more than other non-oleophobic glass so it was just generally assumed that the coating was the culprit. Obviously from Corning's documents this isn't the case with Gorilla Glass and their oleophobic coating.

So did you read the post? That's exactly my point, I do take really good care of it. Now (again go read my posts) I did have an Atrix before this phone and tossed it around quite a bit and it has hardly any scratches that are as deep as the ones on the nexus. The only scratches it has are around the edge and can only be seen in the sunlight. I owned the Atrix for almost two years and never had a screen protector for it. I've owned this phone for only months, and its only gone one month without a screen protector. It seems new scratches appear each week and I'm doing everything to prevent them. It just makes no since why it would be collecting so many scratches in just a small amount of time.

Just so you know, neither keys or pocket change will scratch your phone, its sand and the glass particles in dust you want to worry about.

Screen scratches super easy gorilla glass is a lie!

Haven't dropped my phone and handle it as if it were my child. I have three hairline scratches on the screen from setting it on a counter[face down]and picking it up to see activenotifications. Disappointed with the build quality moto!

Are the scratches on the actual screen surface or on the front lip of the phone? From my experience the front lip area is very sensitive to fine scratches (though not very noticeable) but the screen itself is pretty resistant. This is a bit extreme, but worth checking out too --

That's odd considering the screen doesn't touch a surface when you lay it face down. There are small lips at the top and bottom of the phone to keep the screen slightly elevated. Are you sure it wasn't caused by dust/sand/grit in your pocket?

Usually use a screen protector but haven't found a nice one yet. Its on the actual screen. Goes right through my keyboard. Will take pics soon

Usually I'd mark it down to pocket sand but it happened while on a desk. Set it down, went to bathroom and came back it was scratched.
It sits like a nexus in a desk but I think it might have been from the mouse pad I had it on.

That's because sand is one of the toughest materials. Yes, tougher than a steel knife.

I too scratched it by putting it face down on a table. The center of the screen touches the surface and it even spins. I got semi-circular scratches on my phone. I never once got scratches on my GS2, so the only explanation is the fact that there is no lip. Today I received a replacement device and sent back the scratched one (Moto has a 14 day exchange policy). Now we know not to put it face down.

I learned my lesson with my Note 2. It was the first phone I didn't put a screen protector on and it was also the last one. I put one on my X before I even powered it on.

Well, "sand" can be many different things, some of which have quartz which is very expensive.

I choose not to use a screen protector. What's the point of protecting the glass if you never get to feel how nice it is? There are no screen protectors that offer the same feel as glass with the exception of the steinheil glas.t ones but they have their own set of issues. I haven't used a screen protector on any phone since the EVO 4G and have never gotten any serious scratches. Superficial swirls, yes, but who gives a crap about those? Not I. These are glass screens not plastic, and as such they are very hard to scratch. They don't need screen protectors.

Because who doesn't prefer to have scratches on their screens right? It is not like scratches decrease the value of a phone or anything like that, in fact it makes it look better. And who does not like sliding their fingers across scratched Corning Gorilla Glass to get that reddish hue and that stiffness on the tip of their thumbs and index fingers when they scroll and play games?

Right, so use a crappy protector so the next guy gets to use a perfect screen. I sell all my old devices so I am well aware of how it affects resale value. Are you really going to ugly up your phone for a year or so with a protector just so you can make an extra $50 later on down the road? Or drag your fingers across a ****ty plastic protector vs. nice smooth glass when gaming? Doesn't make any sense to me. It boggles my mind how people scratch their screens so easily. I work in the trades and I always toss my phone in my tool bag with tons of sharp, jagged tools and I don't get any scratches ever. On any phone.

Hint: not everybody considers buying a phone for resale after the new hotness comes along. People who do? Of course they should consider putting on a screen protector and an otterbox.
But people who value ergonomics? Not so much.
FWIW, my last two phones have been case and screen protector free. They've picked up the odd cosmetic ding, but the gorilla glass has been flawless after two years of usage. YMMV.

Hint: Everyone cannot have a smartphone for two years and not use screen protectors without having a scratched up screen. There are no ergonomics to value on a scratched up screen unless one appreciates having their fingers get red or irritated from rubbing it while scrolling, swiping, or playing games.

I HATE screen protectors, but I'm OCD about scratches, so I originally was going to put one on with a case. Now with Nexus Protect, I was thinking of going naked, and paying the deductible a year or so in, if there are any major scratches, then again when I upgrade to have a new phone to either sell or store away. This is barring me legitimately breaking the phone, obviously. Anybody else going naked, and if so, is it because of Protect?

I never use a case I do however use a tempered glass screen protector, have the N6 now and when I get the N6P I'll do the same.

That's crazy talk, bruh. I always rock a glass screen protector and at least a minimal TPU case on all my phones. I do it partly for myself, but mostly for resale value. The difference in sales price between a scratched/used-looking phone and a like-new one can be significant. Over the course of one or two years, I know that I will ''definitely'' scratch, scuff, and drop my phone at least a tiny bit, so it's cheap insurance. I've never lost or broken a phone and never purchased phone insurance, so I must be doing something right.

ive kind of stopped caring, to be honest. I was super anal about all of my devices, went naked on my HTC One, LOVED it, so I then went naked on my iPhone 6. Thing is scratched to hell, but I'm giving it to my dad (he's on an iPhone 4 and doesnt care about the scratches), and I've kind of just accepted scratched phones. Like OP, if I really go nuts with it, I'll just use Nexus Protect a year into it and get it replaced or something...

I really want to rock this phone naked but I feel like it'll be really slippery :s

I will never own a phone that doesn't have a zagg glass invisible shield on it, they offer better protection than a regular screen protector, and it doesn't change the feel of the phone. Glass beats silicone/plastic/whatever they are made out of everything.

I've gone naked on all my phones for the last 4 years. People want thin phones with small bezels, and then they ruin it by putting it in a case.
I am careful with the phone, like never putting other things with it in my pocket. Have not yet scratched the screen (no screen protector, of course). But the paint on my Galaxy Note 3, which I'm replacing with the 6P, is peeling in places.

Over the course of one or two years, I know that I will ''definitely'' scratch, scuff, and drop my phone at least a tiny bit, so it's cheap insurance. I've never lost or broken a phone and never purchased phone insurance, so I must be doing something right.

I use a belt case. All my phones are naked.
As for fashion? Behold the field in which I grow my f**ks, as you can see, it is barren.

Definitely a tempered glass and most likely naked, unless the camera bar is hideous in person, then a skin on the back.

Gonna try without a screen protector, see how well the Gorilla Glass 4 holds up. May have to get one of the cases on Google Store though, getting 50% off because I purchased the phone with Fi.

Always naked. But hopefully the Nexus lettering on the back doesn't fall off this time. Moto's adhesive sucks.

Insurance > Case
Phones are ergonomically designed to sit in your hand, (most) cases are not

Will go tempered glass screen prot, and no case.

I HATE screen protectors, but I'm OCD about scratches, so I originally was going to put one on with a case. Now with Nexus Protect, I was thinking of going naked, and paying the deductible a year or so in, if there are any major scratches, then again when I upgrade to have a new phone to either sell or store away. This is barring me legitimately breaking the phone, obviously. Anybody else going naked, and if so, is it because of Protect?

defintely use a Glass SP bro, i hate scratches so i always use the Glass Sp's for phone i buy newly ! protect the expensive screen mate

Look at that, I recognize you from the hammerhead forums! Glad to see that I'm not the only one that jumped the shark (pun totally intended) to the 6P.
To everyone, does a tempered glass SP feel just like GG? How does it affect screen quality? That's my issue with plastic SPs, they don't feel right, and tend to refract too much light. If tempered glass fixes those things, I'll definately throw one on.

Anyone use their phone without a screen protector?

I'm really getting sick of the rubber feel of the tpu protectors. Have a zagg on it now, and need to replace it with a new one, so I ordered a bestskinsever.
I hate the feel and the look, and I'm tempted to just use it naked and say screw it if it gets scratched. And if it gets really bad just order an insurance replacement.
What does the xda crowd think?

I don't use a screen protector, but I do use a tech21 case, which flips over the screen and covers it while in my pocket. Case takes some getting used to though.

I don't use one, I haven't used one on my iPhone 6s, S6, or Note 4 either. I'm not overly easy on my phone's but I'm concious about what I do with them, like phone and keys not in the same pocket ect. Screen's now are pretty damn resilient but if you toss it in a purse or bag with other things I'd get one.

I don't use a screen protector. I keep it in my left pocket with nothing else in the pocket.

They sell tempered glass protectors on Amazon. That would get rid of that rubber feel. I personally don't use one though. Small scratches on the screen will make the screen easier to break though. Think of it like etching glass like they do windows etc.. then they literally break it along the etch.

There's been a lot of discussion about TGSP for the GS7E, and it looks like pretty much no-one is satisfied with what is yet available for varying reasons.
There's a discussion thread in the main GS7E forum => link which people should review before buying a TGSP, in my opinion.

I've tried one for my iPhone 6s and it shattered without even dropping my phone. I know there no way the actual screen would have cracked doing the same thing. The curved ones seem to be way weaker than the flat ones.

Zagg has a tgsp now, I haven't used it but want to try it. I have a bodyguardz on right now and can't really tell. It doesn't cover the whole screen so it doesn't interfere with my speck case. The old zagg did and barely lasted a month before it started peeling up

I haven't used one on any phone I've had for ages. Never cared for the blurry look they give the screen. I'm sure they've improved since the first couple smartphones but I've never bothered. I never put my phone in a pocket with anything else (that just seems like begging for problems regardless of having a screen protector or not), and I've never had the slightest scratch on any of them. Always use a case, but never anything that covers the screen itself. They just never come in contact with anything that could ever scratch them.

I have never used a screen protector on any phone and I have never gotten any noticeable stractches. I did get a couple minor scratches on a couple phone screens, but they were so fine that you could only see them in a reflection of a bright light when the screen was off. I did break a screen once when I sat down and the phone fell out of my pocket onto concrete, but luckily that was an HTC phone so it got replaced for free. I don't usually use a case either, but I do have one on my S7 Edge. Knock on wood.

I am using my phone naked right now with no issue. I have drop it many times, only the corner metal part is scratch, glass is perfectly fine.

I use the Zagg HD Screen Protectors. Not the tempered glass kind. You can't even tell it's there. No grainy look or feel.
