Under developer options there is a setting under "USB configuration" where you can set the default action when you plug into a computer via USB. The default is "charging". If you change it, it stays on "charging".

You can not live with having to swipe and press the screen twice on the occasion of plugging your phone into a pc etc?

MPT is initializing and KIES is working, but I can still navigate through my tablet. There should be a screen to tell me to touch Home to return to home screen. What happened here? Nothing wrong with the KIES windows software because my Galaxy S II connects fine, and I see this blackish KIES connected screen. What has changed with my tablet?
If your on touchwiz, the only time the screen appears is while transferring files to the sd or moving files on the sd. If your not transferring files and you see your main screen, it is safe to unplug, no need to hit home to disconnect.

I think I couldn't explain myself well enough. I was wondering where the mpt application screen which says "press the home key to quit samsung kies" had gone whenever you connect an android device, KIES installed or not on your pc. I don't remember when I used this feature last. I wonder if Touchwiz update disabled that. What happens when you connect your tab to your pc? Are you still on your tablet screen and navigate through your programs and screens? Shouldn't there be a mpt screen with a usb icon. Mine doesn't have anymore.

The screen "press home..." no longer comes up when you plug in the usb cable. With cable plugged in, you computer will detect the tab and give a chance to transfer files to sdcard like before. When this is happening you can scroll around and see apps and what not, just like you describe. You can disconnect any time without having to "eject" or hit home to disconnect.
It's when you transfer a file, a screen will pop up on the tab to indicate MTP is active and do not disconnect. When the file is done transferring, the screen goes away and your allowed to disconnect.

Thanx for the feed back. When I bought the tab mid june, before touchwiz update mpt screen used to be there. It seems it had gone either with it or the last 3.2 mb update few weeks ago.

like the subject says, any way to do this without root/custom ROM?
when mounted in my car, it's super annoying to have to turn the screen on, and do a unlock, then get back into the music app (spotify, pandora, google music, etc) just to be able to change songs or something similar.
i know that navigation will not turn the screen off while in use, but everything else seems to. i used to use WakeLocker with my Galaxy S and GS2, but it doesn't seem to work with my Nex4.
thanks.
Go into settings, go down to about phone then scroll down to build number.
Tap "build number" rapidly until a message on the screen says something like "you are now a developer".
This will allow you to go to developer settings.
There you will find a setting allowing you to keep the screen on during charging.

Wow THAT'S where my reboot to recovery mode option went lol. That's great, what a fantastic gem of info! I use a speed widget for quick trips since my cars speedo became more unreliable (temp fix until I implement a permanent solution). Now I can keep the screen on while docked without downloading an entire app just for the task on my SGS3... Screen burn, you are no longer more important than my personal safety on the road!
Does "DayDreams" not work for you? My phone displays the Clock Daydream whenever charging.. and does the whole time.
While your phone is not "docked" when in your car, DayDreams has to be enabled for "Charging" by clicking "When to Daydream" since the phone is charging not docked.
As for the "Stay awake" options (Developer Options>Stay awake) works just fine.. its been on the charger for 20 min now, and screen is still displaying the home-screen. (time out is still set to default 30 sec)

Daydream works...
My screen stays on when charging the phone. If I put off the screen, each time an event occurs, the sreen goes on and do not go off after 2 mins like defined in the menu.
Is there a special setup to do to avoid that
Have you got the stay awake while charging option enabled in the developer options menu?

It tells me to turn device around to set up the epd but this message stays even after setting up epd so I can't use the colour side of device until I leave guest mode

it does ask to set up the epd every time when entering guest mode, but for me it works after that. Did you go through all the hoops when setting up the epd? go through every tutorial? for me the last tutorial step was to flip the device again back to color screen where it showed how to use the home button. After that the tutorial was over and I could use the color screen normally.
Hi, can anyone help with this? My phone is stuck in charging mode and all the debug options are grayed out.
I have attached a screenshot.
Thanks,
Hi~
Look over your notification lists, and tap on Charging mode notification and change to MTP, then try again.

Hi, thanks for your reply. No, I don't seem to have this. I have looked in App notifications, notification access, and filter notifications and there is no charging mode notification.
Cheers,

If you choose Charging mode, you won't be able to use Debugging mode.

Yes, I have seen that second screen once when I changed it to charging to see what it does. I haven't been able to get that screen back.
I search in settings for android and see the MTP but when I touch it I get "USB is now disconnected". That's it.
Thanks,
