Text and ebook reading experience on the S7 Edge screen - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi,
How's the text reading experience on the S7 Edge in portrait mode, using apps such as Google Play Books, Kindle or Pocket? I'm afraid of light reflections / glares at the edges (very apparent in stores' artificial lighting) and text distortion when using narrow margins.

I don't have a ton of data to support, but I read for quite a while at my daughters gymnastics place, with horrible bright artificial light with no issues and the edges had no distortion or other noticeable effects to me. (Google Play Books). By the way, the book I just finished was Ready Player One (right in my childhood wheelhouse), can't wait to see Spielberg's take on the movie.

Thanks for you feedback (btw, I have also enjoyed this book). Anyone else who can share their experience?
I just got back from the store where I loaded some previously prepared 1440x2560 screenshots. The ones from Google Play Books and Pocket seemed OK, but on PDFs and mobile websites with little to no padding the glare and distortion were quite prominent, same as in Youtube in landscape mode - so I'm still not convinced

Xperia video not filling screen

Hi, I've had an X1i unbranded from some time in november (bought from play.com) but when playing back video in the media panel (currently on R2A) or when using the youtube application here, there are lines on the left and bottom of the screen (when the screen is in portrait) that remain the colour of the previous screen. Is my xperia faulty or does everyone else get this problem?
To me it seems like the program is trying to fill the screen but misses a pixel. If the screen is written to from the top left in portrait mode then it seems that the programs are starting from 1,1 instead of 0,0. Oddly it only happens in the youtube application and the media panel when playing video full screen. All other apps work fine as does windows media player.
Can anyone help?
so does this only happen to me?
The youtube app is like that on every xperia. The media panel may also have stripe on the side. It does on mine with the James Bond trailer. Not in other videos though, so I'm not sure what's up with it.

[Q] So how is fullscreen video over hdmi being solved?

So I got my microHDMI cable and it works really good except the annoying AR problem with black bars on the sides.
I have seen people saying that video from Googles Play store does go fullscreen, but haven't seen it in action anywhere and can't try it myself because I live in Sweden.
So if Google can do it 3rd party apps should also be able to do it right? Or are they using some unofficial/undocumented API or something? I haven't seen anyone talking about this so I wan't to get some discussions going.

I haven't had a problem with anything other than sound via HDMI. My n10 desktop, google movie rentals and apps that I have run are all at full screen. I don't recall any of them using a different aspect ratio. I just got a new 55inch plasma last week and I did notice the notification bar runs off the screen slightly.
Maybe it's a setting in your tv for that device? Set the tv's settings when using that particular hdmi channel in case they are not global. Try your remote's aspect button in case it is not in the display menu. See if it displays info so you will know what resolution is being displayed?
My son's Samsung Chromebox displays at a very low resolution using hdmi on his tv. Tried every possible setting and he has the black bars on the sides and all the icons and words are so large that the menus don't fit on the screen. Real annoying and looks like an older CGA screen on a pc-xt. (like a 480dpi setting under windows) Tried every cable he could find, every tv setting and it would not display higher 720p. Nothing he could do, we just gave him our old plasma tv and the display is beautiful... Really high resolution.
Same as my tablet, no sound on either of our panasonic tv's... Others work fine... Have you tried viewing it on other tv's.... Could be something is not compatible with your tv and it is down converting the resolution?
Well, those are a couple of things I might look at... Check with others and see if it is a problem for everyone else... Does the n10 main menu show smaller as well? I just double checked and mine runs to all the edges with no "black bars".
I hope something here might help.

I run the TV without scaling/zoom so if you don't see the bars and buttons on your screen your TV is wrongly configured. The N10 sends the unaltered 16:10 picture right to the TV thus the black bars.
I know I can probably distort the picture so it fits with the zoom feature on the TV but that is not a solution, I want a full 1920x1080 output for video-playback without any scaling and distortion of the picture. On my Xoom it would lock the apps to 1280x720 resolution so they fit the TV when you plug in the HDMI cable so if feels so stupid that they removed that feature in the never Android version the N10 runs.
No sound on Panasonic is a know problem if you search around here.

You are right about the apps and the main n10 menus. But if I. Play a movie (tried ice age that came with the tablet and one I purchased off google play) they fill the screen and the info from my tv shows it at 1080p FULL. Meaning that it is not using stretch, zoom or any other screen altering settings. I don't have black line when playing movies back in the play store movie app. I do get them if I try youtube or other apps. Movies play as they are designed to on mine, completely filling the screen (on their own).
I do know about panasonic, that was my point about different equipment!

Good to hear that the play store can do it. So should we ask developers to implement the same thing then? I hope it's documented by Google.

Couple of questions.

I'm looking to get rid of my s4, which I hate, and am looking to get the g2 or Sony z ultra.
My main use is watching movies, Web browsing and reading magazines on zinio, which is why the big screen of the Sony appealed. I am worried about the battery life and handling issues of the ultra though so am thinking of the g2 despite the smaller screen, especially as the battery life seems to be so good.
Anyway wanted to ask if anyone knew if the g2 worked in usb host mode and so was able to read off external Flash drives? 32gb onboard is not enough for me as I regularly take long flights and like to take lots of large movie files with me but being able to use an external usb drive would get round this.
Lastly I'm not sure I like the onscreen buttons taking up screen real estate in apps where you want to use the whole screen. Can someone confirm if there is an option to have the menu and back buttons etc disappear during web browsing and video watching in 3rd party video apps like mx player? Also can the buttons be hidden in gaming as the videos I see all seem to have them there during games. Same question re zinio - can you get a true full screen reading experience or are the home buttons always present? And the photo viewer?
Thanks!!
Yes, it will read USB OTG just fine. That's how I transferred my music and backups from my old 64 GB MicroSDXC.
The buttons disappear when watching videos but I don't know the answers to your others. Someone mentioned an app that gives better control over the menu buttons. Requires root, which is easy too.

As the post above me said, yes the on screen button disappear when watching videos on MX Player (I current use this player). You have to go to the options and enable the onscreen buttons setting. Web browsing on Chrome the on screen buttons are still there. It really depends if the app support on screen keys. On most apps teh on screen keys disappear.
There is an app that modifies the onboard keys to hide automatically (requires root). The keys will then auto hide everywhere. The thread shouldn't be hard to find.

Gray-scale Color Banding

Since I've owned this phone, I've had horrible gray-scale banding. It will happen if I play a movie with a dark scene, or stream a Netflix movie with a dark scene, or view security cameras through a camera monitor application, etc. The banding is *BAD* - 8-bit bad.
Is this just a limitation of the AMOLED screen technology? I don't have this problem on any phone that uses an LCD display. Is there any way to correct the problem?? I've tried changing screen modes and it doesn't help and I'm not sure what else I could do.
Any help would be appreciated.

Huawei Nova 2i - uploads horizontal FB messenger videos vertically

Hello everyone/anyone
I wonder if I can get any help or advice on the following.. When I video horizontally in FB messenger, about 90% of the time my Huawei Nova 2i will upload the video as a vertical video, as if I filmed it vertically, cutting off the sides.... While obviosuly a first world problem, this is SUPER frustrating and I can find no clues anywhere so far as to how to fix it...........
I'm running Android v8, security patch 1st February 2019 and I believe FB messenger is up to date.
thanks if you can
frank
Interesting subject and I don't know the answer but I suspect FB messenger is geared towards vertical video. I hate VV and even though apps like Snapchat relish and promote it, it should be banned from the face of the planet. You are quite right to record vids horizontally (in most cases).
Apart from my hatred of VV when watching on a TV or computer monitor (any device with 16:9 horizontal), most people have not considered the stereo sound when playing back vids on such devices. On your Huawei Nova 2i (and most Android phones including Samsung) you have a microphone at the top and one at the bottom. This gives stereo sound when recording vids. Not much point if one mic is pointing at the sky and the other at your feet.
I blame Apple for this. Most iPhones have the stereo microphones at the bottom about 1" apart. That's not much use either but Snapchat and others started there.
So with your Huawei Nova 2i, keep doing horizontal vids as you watch iPhone uses record mono audio.
I hope you find a solution to your issue.
