I used to be an avid ROM flasher, changing ROMs daily on my old Moto X. Now that I'm using Android Pay religiously I need to keep my phone non-rooted, but would still like to run a custom kernel. I have been looking at FrancoKernel and ElementalX (sp?), but not sure what is best for the stock ROM without any tweaking (as most kernel tweaking apps need root). What's the community think?

Franco kernel
Flash it forget it
Cheers
I would also say Franco...
Never used Franco so I cannot comment on it. I use ElementalX, stock, rooted and it works awesome.

Got Franco's kernel flashed with TWRP as recovery and everything else stock. Can already see battery life improvement, can't wait to see how it compares in the long run.
I hate using Franco Kernel.
For some reason everytime I use it I get more battery life then I should, and everything works faster than stock. I don't plug in my phone more than I have to. It's just the worst kernel out there if you want low OST and crashes.
Didn't think that you can replace boot.img on an uprooted phone.

I'm rooted with custom ROM and systemless root and Android Pay works 100%. Can add cards and pay at terminals without issue.
Just a little FYI.

Can we change the kernel if not rooted? If yes, can you share the procedure?

Root has nothing to do with the ability to install a kernel. All that's required is TWRP recovery, which in turn requires an unlocked bootloader.

my old phone was the HTC One X and I remember having to repack the kernel for the rom I was using
1) is it the same here with the Nexus 4 after rooting/unlocking? any automatic repackers out there?
Also,
2) do I still need to "fastboot flash boot boot.img" everytime I flash a new rom
PS pretty excited about getting back into the android scene. my nexus 4 is coming in tomorrow.
From what I know I never had to repack any kernel on my nexus phones. All you need to do is run the unlock command once through fast boot and you can flash whatever you like. This phone is made so you can run what you like without jumping through hoops like the branded phones.

can anyone second that?
once the bootloader is unlocked, and have a custom recovery installed, you can flash any nexus 4 kernel you want(compatible kernel). you dont have to repack anything.
Thanks simms22
is flashing the boot.img required after flashing a rom?

if thats the kernel that you are flashing. theres only one that i can think of that requires flashing the boot.img, all the others are flashable via the recovery. but, to answer the question, after every rom flash, youll have to reflash your custom kernel, as the rom will overwrite the kernel that you are running.

Coming from a One X myself, I can confirm that you don't need to go hunting for a repacked ramdisk for use with your kernel of choice.
As the Nexus is fully unlocked, (not some half-arsed partial unlock that was the case with the One X), all the kernels can be flashed directly within recovery

THANK YOU for your responses guys.
any opinion on the best rom/kernel available right now for the nexus4?
I would really like the features of AOKP and cyanogenmod but hates little bugs.
Probably might stick with stock rom but maybe a franco kernel for now??
rasbean jelly rom, trinity kernel. stock rom is good too. but theres no best, theres whats best for your needs. experiment with a few different roms/kernels, find what you and your device likes best
I have a Nexus 6p with 7.1.1 stock and it was only bootloader unlocked. Since it's been a year I was wondering if I should root and flash a custom ROM. The only disappointment I have is the battery life. Other than that everything is good so far.
Please advice.

Smart move to unlock the bootloader first thing. You could just start with a custom kernel like EX Kernel, or Franco. Even using the default settings, battery life was much improved. Custom governor profiles are built-in to EX and will yield even better battery life. Rooting will allow you to install several fantastic apps to help with device management and backups such as AdAway, Solid Explorer, Titanium Backup and FlashFire.
I would since it has sooo many advantages on XDA!

In order to install custom kernel, I need to root first and change the default recovery to custom like TWRP?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
For the kernel alone you do not need to be rooted, but a custom recovery like TWRP would be required. Suggest you follow the guide here. Should you decide to root, it is just a matter of flashing it with TWRP (like the recovery).

Hi, I am currently running stock 7.1.1 on my Nexus 6P, I love Android pay. I use it nearly every day. With CM14 on my previous phone I could not use it. Do you know if there is a workaround for it? Or should I just stick with stock

The normal workaround people use involves using Magisk, Phil's SuperSU and a compatible kernel. If you do I search through the ROM threads you should find lots of posts regarding how people got Android Pay to work on their rooted phones.

I've seen those, haven't seen it with the new Lineage OS. With the rooted stock ROM on my m9 it worked but not with a custom ROM. So would it be the same with Lineage?

I know people are using it successfully on Pure Nexus, Megapixel Rom and Cortex Rom. If Lineage has built in Super user like it's predecessor you would need to turn that off because you need to be rooted with Phil's.

Did you have any luck with this?
Yes I did, I'm running the latest Lineage OS 14.1 Rooted and use Android Pay with my BOA card.
Edit: I could not get stock kernel to work, had to use ElementalX Kernel.

I am pretty sure nothing works anymore. As long as the bootloader is unlocked, then you are screwed. This is the exact reason we need a root option without unlocking bootloader..
I just got a used Nexus 6P as a true backup phone, and couldn't get it at a better price $100 . The phone has everything I need, especially the great camera and HDR+ enabled default! I also have the latest android 8.0 on it. Is there root for android 8 on the nexus 6p yet? How about custom rom such as Lineage to improve battery life, even though the bone stock android is decent already. Much appreciated for inputs.
for rooting use Magisk.
There's so much option for Custom ROM.
PureNexus, Resurrection ROM, LineageOS, etc. i've had tried those 3 ROMs. They're great.

Welcome. You're kinda late but better late than never... Stock Oreo is rock solid rooted with a custom kernel (EX). Super SU has always worked well for me.

Please walk me thru this process if possible. There is not a stable oreo rom or lineagos right? So maybe flashing the kernel on stock oreo is good? I'm trying to maximize battery life while keeping hdr+

Eventually there will be but not at the moment. I'm using the stock ROM rooted and EX kernel. Just install TWRP and then place the SU and EX zipfiles in the root folder, use TWRP to flash SU first and then EX. With all default settings EX kernel will definitely improve your battery. Good luck.
Ok i will look on how to root. Hows franco kernel vs ex kernel?

Both good. but i prefer elementalX for so many reasons...
Franco is what it say " Flash & forget " just install it and forget it , Good battery without affect the Performance.
usually I switch between those kernels
So I am on H91810q and I have kept root through the upgrades. Am I still able to flash another rom like LineageOS or am I stuck with stock since I upgraded so far?
Try it -- it isn't going to break your phone
Probably isn't going to run to well on new firmware though. Most of the heavy development was done on much older firmware, and those parts haven't been updated.

I'm thinking a TWRP Full Backup of the stock rom and wipe and flash LineageOS. In theory do you think I would be able to restore stock if something doesn't go right?
Yes. When you install LOS or a LOS based ROM the only thing that gets flashed is boot and system. Both of those are backed up by TWRP.

Nope, you can't downgrade. Unless someone picks up development on current firmware, you can only use stock.
Not the answer I was looking for lol...

I know this isn't a custom rom but you're like me and on rooted Q, I use to not enjoy stock due to not being able to customize the phone how I liked but the instabilities in the camera and bluetooth and battery life made me appreciate the stock/stock based roms for the V20 and I actually PREFER a fully functional camera nd awesome audio recorder than inferior apps. But! Askermk2000's kernel is COMPATIBLE with rooted 10q, I am using it and it has honestly breathed new life into my phome for sure and since we don't have many rom options at the moment at least throw this kernel on your stock 10q rom and enjoy it! Here's the thread
