Is Xposed similar to Cydia for iOS? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I used to have a rooted nexus 5 and was unaware of this wonderful Xposed app. Had I known about xposed, I would've stayed on Android; however, I switched to iOS after hearing about jailbreaking. Theme-ing and modding on IOS is extremely limited and it quickly becomes dull and boring over time due to the low volume of the iOS' UI. After hearing about xposed and what it can do, I immediately switch back to android...and oh boy... Android is heaven for themers haha. Though Ive mistakenly bought the US variant of the s7 edge without knowing about the locked bootloader, I've order the international version for rooting purposes. I've seen YT videos about the xposed apk and it reminds me of Cydia for iOS haha. Essentially, is Xposed a mod store for rooters the same as Cydia is a mod store to jailbreakers?

Coming from the iOS jailbreak scene there are some similarties. I would definitely consider my self an Android only user for the future and can never see my self going back to iOS EVER. One down side I guess is there isn't as much tweaks/apps as available on Cydia. It could be there are more jailbreakers than rooters out there.

New Android owner

Hello everyone. Just wanted to say hey and introduce myself. I just picked up my very first Android device, a galaxy s 2 (att). I'm coming from a long generation of iPhone and ios devices so this is a big deal for me. I'm still a huge apple fan and still carry my iPhone 4 but I'm not one of the closed minded ones. Apparently I joined this forum a long time ago but never participated but I'm back for sure this time. Being since this is my first Android, I am very uneducated but I do have an idea of the possibilities. I hope to learn everything there is to learn and enjoy my phone and Android as much as I have with my IPhones

Hi and welcome! You will be surprised how much you can personalize your android device! A tip is to try the different launchers. I use launcher pro! And if you dare to take it a step further you can try the different customs roms out there. My X10 was a completely new phone when I installed a custom rom.

Thanks guys. I've heard of roms but will have to research more since I don't Know enough. Like for instance, I didn't know that my device id that ended in 777 was going to determine that much.

I'm actually in the exact same boat as you, picked up the Galaxy S2 as my first Android phone after years of iPhones/iOS.
I'll be going back to Apple on October 14th.
So many people that I speak with outline that Android is so customizable and amazing, but I don't see it at all. There are some great features for sure (Swipe, Nav, etc) but overall I found the cons way out way the pros.
I've tried a number of different roms but never found one that didn't have something wrong with it. Certain apps not working, certain pieces of it not even present and ultimately I flashed to the updated Samsung 2.3.5.
I have reception issues every now and then that requires me to restart the phone. The battery life is pretty trashy unless I disable everything that makes a smart phone a smart phone. Apps don't feel anywhere near as polished, even something as simple as the facebook app feels slow and under developed when compared to the iOS version.
Overall, everything that people bloat about for Android being amazing, I'll never use (Seriously, who cares if you can torrent while on the go!) and the new features iOS 5 are going to bring will align pretty much everything that I actually do use.
I'm by no means an apple fan boy, I own a PC not a mac and I was more then willing to try Android after all the hype I've heard but I don't see any of it.
Huge disappointment, just wish I was still in the 14 days window where I could return the device...

I had an iPhone 4 for a few months and couldn't wait to get rid of it, I'm really pleased with my galaxy s2. For me the benefits of android far outweigh the negatives. Some of the benefits of android include not having to use crappy itunes, being able to use an SD card and not having to wait months for a jailbreak to mention just a few.
When I comes to customizing the home screen try 'go launcher' you can run it without root. To do the equivilant on the iPhone you would need about 4 or 5 cydia apps/tweaks.

Question about touchwiz.

Hello, I'm coming from an iphone, I've had one since they came out. But I'm about to move to a galaxy s3, I know I know, it took me long enough.
My question is, I have been reading this forum for a few days and it seems that most people that have a galaxy s3 really don't like the version of ICS and touchwiz that come on the phone. Why is this? What about it is so bad? Again I have never had an android, and have only used a galaxy s3 in person a few times at the AT&T store. Just trying to learn.
Also anyone have any tips to someone moving from an iphone?
Reason is because ics stock looks might be better for some people, and some apps look and act different, coming from an iPhone I wouldn't worry much, I feel the touchwiz makes it easier for iPhone user to enjoy android, there is a lot good features on galaxy s 3 that you would enjoy, I would recommend to get an extra battery and play with the OS a lot is different, also get ics keyboard on the play store because stock keyboard sucks, once you comfortable with Android try to find out more about rooting and cyanogen 9 which is android os without any added features from any OEM good luck and enjoy the big screen

It's all personal preference.I believe Most people don't like touchwiz because its to far away from "vanilla" android which would be the experience you get on a nexus device. I'd say try it out and if you like it stick with it, if not you can switch home launchers or go to a new rom. I've recently switch from an iPhone myself and personally don't mind touchwiz on the s3

A crack flashers thoughts?

I currently have a G-Nex and started off flashing new ROMS fairly often, but as Android has matured I have found it less necessary to flash ROMS for performance purposes. I mainly flash ROMS now to try out various features ie Pie controls.
My question is any crack flasher out there buy the Moto X even though it will probably be limited in development? If so have you felt the need to flash ROMS or is the stock ROM stable/smooth enough to appease you? I know a dev version will be out eventually, but I'm wondering if it is necessary to wait for it.

I was flashing my rom on my s4 about once a week if not more, sometimes a lot more. I've only had it two days but have not wanted to flash yet. I do want root though. The biggest thing I miss is paranoid android. I loved pie and being able to customize quick settings and pull down quick toggle from tip right of screen.

I just got the phone today.
I was a Galaxy Nexus user from launch day (Verizon). And let me tell you, the Moto X is AWESOME. The performance is incredible (I find it snappier than the GS4's I've played around with), the battery is far superior to what I had grown accustomed to on the GNex (and I haven't even gone through a full cycle yet, so it's just gonna get better!). The features like Active Notifications and Touchless Control are really nifty, especially the Active Notifications. Despite the screen being 4.7", the form factor is actually smaller than the Gnex which boggled my mind. I love how it feels in my hands.
At the moment, I'm not concerned about the lack of a dev community. I'm sure when 5.0 launches and I can't get a build running day of I'll be a little envious of the Nexus owners who do have it running (granted, I have a 2012 Nexus 7 so I'll at least be able to play with that haha). I do miss some things like Pie Controls, the Cyanogenmod MMS APK, having access to stuff like Titanium Backup and the like, but the positives with the Moto X far outweigh the stuff I miss. And who knows, someone might eventually crack the code and we might get the best of both worlds but until then, I'm more than pleased with this phone.
I used to be really bad but now all I want is root. Wouldn't mind a slightly custom rom to allow custom lock screen short cuts and get rid of the damn ATT logo but outside of that I really don't need anything that this phone doesn't offer.
All I miss is pie controls/full screen mode. Stock is smooth.

As i am one of the luck moto x which is rooted, xposed framework works surprisingly well, no need for a custom ROM, IMO any custom ROM will have all the Motorola goodies removed such as touch less control, may as well pick up a Sammy s4 and be like everyone else. Root is all you need

Only AOSP roms, most devices have roms that stick pretty close to stock but give you a few tweaks to play with. That being said stock android really doesn't need much, the only thing I really want is customizable lockscreen shortcuts and a quick flashlight mod.
That's all available through xposed mods, the only thing I miss is the brightness slider.
Dual panel, full call screen pics, clock, battery, carrier label and more are all easily done with xposed. Cyanogenmod clock is available with an app

Man that's good to hear. I have a GNote2 and was just getting tired of the big screen. I purchased the Moto X today and it seems like something that will satisfy my small phone craving. I will miss all the themes and titanium backup when rooted. So what you've just said puts my crack flashing needs at ease. Thanks. I do hope that someone is able to unlock the boot loader because after having a Droid X I thought I would never get a Motorola device again. I do wonder when the Developer Edition does become available if we will be able to trade in for one?

No desire to flash a ROM with this phone. I just want to be able to use autostarts and TiB. Once we have root, it will be PERFECT.
Yeah I think the only thing I'd really want on the phone is 4.3 just because. I am curious though because it seems like Moto super optimized the kernel/software to run so smooth, I wonder if a custom rom would be unable to duplicate Moto's optimizations.

Yeah that's why I don't really want a bootloader unlock (it'd be nice) but rooting will let me do most of what I wanted.

I've heard the Moto X already uses trim even though it's on 4.2.2. I'm getting a Verizon Moto X tomorrow. I can't believe I'm leaving the Nexus/Prepaid/Crackflasher lifestyle, but it's a long story.
I'm a dad and a very busy web/app developer, so I kind of look forward to no longer feeling the compulsion to constantly flash new ROMs. With the locked bootloader of the Verizon Moto X, I suppose that will help curb my urges
I've always loved how I can come to XDA, find a new ROM or mod, and suddenly my old smartphone feels like a new toy. I'm hoping that the Moto X will be such a solid device I can live without that somewhat time consuming and battery/stability endangering habit. Instead of being a leach on the Developer threads, I hope to become more of a contributor to other types of threads instead.
Was a crackflasher; constantly flashing ROMs to my S3 until I finally found a ROM I settled on (M.O.A.R) I love the near stock experience of the Moto X all I really want is root for adaway and it would be nice to get a ROM built off stock OTA with lockscreen tweaks and what not. Overall I'm loving this phone and can't get over how snappy this thing is!
On top of all that I don't have much time to mess with ROMs anymore as I am working full time and really need my phone to "just work" After a while you lose interest after setting up your phone for the millionth time! Coming from the S3 where AOSP was still very broken it is a nice change.
I was a frequent flasher, trying various ROMs on my Galaxy S3, and then Note 2, and then HTC One.
When I got the Moto X a few days ago I checked out the this new XDA forum section... and was (at the time) sad there were not alternative ROMs.
However, after a few days of use I discovered the Moto X stock ROM is GREAT! There really is nothing missing/annoying that would normally get me ROM hunting. Plus, there already is a XPosed module that offers some extra customization. And amazingly, the Rogers version of the phone has no bloatware at all that I can see.
So the great Moto X stock ROM has cured me of crack flashing!
I also am kind of happy to take a break from the crackflashing habit. My Note 2 was lucky to survive 3 days without me flashing some new ROM. I factory reset my X this morning due to a camera that wouldn't initialize here and there but I hope I can avoid that from here on out. Setting up everything again without Titanium Backup was a pain!!

Note 3 Purchase Regrets... should I stick with it?

Soooo, I recently purchased a Note 3 and I'm MOSTLY happy with a lot of things about the phone... BUT the idea that we may never get an unlocked bootloader (SOOO annoying, had a Thunderbolt for the last two years and was really looking forward to getting CM again!) is making me question whether I should stay with my new phone or not. Looking for a little advice on keeping the N3 or getting something new:
Pros:
1.) The hardware is incredible. Coming from the Thunderbolt, this thing is insanely fast.
2.) The screen is awesome. The size doesn't bother me at all.
3.) Battery life!
Cons:
1.) Touch Wiz. I used to own an original Droid and LOVED the OS, eventually switching to CM for added features. Most of the stuff I dislike I can turn off, but there's a lot of bloat and dumb ideas here. (Why Samsung makes me turn up the volume and say I won't explode my head every time I plug in headphones is insane... I'M PLUGGING IT INTO MY CAR AND I'M NO LONGER 12 YEARS OLD.)
2.) The screen isn't big enough to use as an e-reader. This is not a huge issue, I had just HOPED it would be... BUT, since that's the case, I could easily switch to another phone and get a tablet too and not feel bad about it.
3.) Gaming... again, I had hoped the N3 would be able to provide gaming and e-reader and phone all into one device, but Android games are really just too shallow for me.
Soooo, what it really comes down to is if you guys think this device will be unlocked down the line OR if you think I could adjust it to make a more stock android/ AOSP/ CM type experience. If I was able to put CM on here I would be sitting pretty. I'm just worried it will turn into a situation like the Thunderbolt with limited updates and no real way to get new software...
If I did get a new phone, what would you guys recommend? I'm looking at the HTC One, Nexus 5, LG G2 and Galaxy S4. I haven't yet looked into which ones have fully unlocked bootloaders with decent roms, but that would be a deal breaker.
Thanks for any and all help, you guys are awesome!!
It sounds (to me) like you should get rid of it and get a phone that you can put CM on. I, personally, have never been a fan of CM. I like miui (haven't had that working 100% on a phone for probably 3 years now though) or heavily modded stock roms more. But as far as speed and battery life. This thing is awesome. Big screen is a + for me too. And it's got more features than I care to use or learn which is also a + I guess.

Ultimately it all comes down to what you want. I mean, if it doesn't live up to your standards why keep it? It's your money to spend how you see fit. Buy something you feel will be worthwhile. If you're looking for the original Android experience the Moto X is a sweet phone and easy to carry and use.

Just a little FYI, i came to the note 3 from a razr maxx, also a locked bootloader using safestrap. It is an officially supported device in the CM build. Sure an unlocked bootloader is great no matter the phone, but a really solid phone can sometimes trump that one little perk. Just a different opinion for your process. Good Luck.
This thread will probably be closed and moved to the sticky, but here are my 2 cents.
Out of all the cons presented, the only one that can be fixed well is the "TouchWiz" problem. The other phones either have smaller displays and Android's game market isn't even close to that of iOS, and doesn't seem like it will be soon. I think the LG G2 is the best choice for you (if you are fine without removable battery and microSD). Same Snapdragon 800, similar large 1080p display (I personally prefer it more because it is nearly impossible to get an AMOLED without black marks or unevenness), and also a large battery. Check out their development, it has a lot of exciting stuff going on and CM11 is right now a WIP. I'd say it still has a lot of potential to grow further, and its already a great community now.
Personally, I wasn't that overwhelmed by the N3 (probably because I had the N2). Looking back, I would have taken the G2 (and the $100 savings at the time) but I was an unlimited glitch purchase and don't have much time to customize my phone anymore. I flashed like mad on DInc, GNex, and Note 2, but right now having a device that isn't wiped every week is what I need. In fact, I finished a whole month on the Android 4.0+ Data Usage page for the first time ever.
Yeah, didn't know if this was the right place to post this, so then I copied and pasted it into the Q&A forum... and was going to delete this... now I can't figure out how to delete either thread! Ah well, if there's a major issue, I'm sure a mod will just close it.
Thanks for the input. I'm certainly not sold on getting rid of my N3, just looking into it. As stated, there are a lot of things I love about this phone, and if I could make it better that would be great.
Yeah, the "cons" really aren't cons, but things that I had HOPED the phone would be able to do, but can't. This just makes me feel OK about switching to a smaller phone and then getting a tablet as well.

I have to agree. I love the phone but my flashaholic status is slowly going away. When I had the TP, TP2, Evo, Evo 3D and Rezound I'd have a new rom almost every three days. Depending on what the devs put out. I have never been an AOSP guy so CM never really meant alot to me. I understand that guys want flexibility. I have heard guys say they couldn't stand sense on HTC just as people want TW off their phone. I love the N3 and it's a nice step up from the S3 I had previously. I might kingo and safe strap once I'm done moving just because but I'm really kinda liking not wiping and restoring my phone all the time too. I may have to change my xda button in my signature to just senior member..

I came to the note 3 from note 2. I want super impressed coming from n2, but ultimately will keep the n3 and sell my n2. I have to all out because every time I touch my n2 I miss it. I just think it feels better in my hands them does the n3.
I'm so over flashing. I was flashing a new rom at least twice a week. I'm happy with tw. Flashing, imo, is a complete waste of time. To me it kind of sounds like you're trying to talk yourself out of the Galaxy Note 3 and into a different phone simply because the boot loader is locked. If that is the case then yes I would try a phone that you could flash. I happen to have a Galaxy Note 2 with an unlocked bootloader and a stock rom on there if you are interested and it has all kinds of accessories.

There are some great points in this thread. I have a note 2 that is pretty new to me. I absolutely love the phone and while I like the unlocked status, I feel I can get most of what I want from a phone with root and xposed modules. I like CM and AOSP ROMs, but the camera quality and options never seem as good with those builds. As a father, the camera has become one of the most important features of my smart phone. That said, I'm considering selling my N2 and HTC One and getting an N3, essentially committing to no more flashing.

Well, before I make any decisions I'm going to root and install xposed and see if I can get all the functionality I want that way. I'm still not too familiar with it since it wasn't a thing on the Thunderbolt... BUT, it looks like it can do a lot of things I want.
From what I have seen so far with this phone is a root with some theming is plenty. Just flashing kernels never really (to me) felt like they did anything. I came from the s3, so just rooting debloating with some greenify makes this phone amazing.

I say keep your Note 3, root it, freeze/remove bloatware, and customize with Wanam Xposed. As far as your "CONS" go, it sounds like you're going to need a tablet in addition to the Note 3. What kind of gaming are you looking to do? Do you just want something that has a bigger screen/better hardware?

Between freezing bloat and xposed framework, its my opinion that custom stock based ROMs are starting to become obsolete. AOSP is a slightly different story.

+1 Imo custom stock roms were never considered actual developing in the early android days. They were more so considered themes and the guys creating them were called Chefs. Something changed in the last couple years...however AOSP is were "real development" exists. Xposed app has pretty much shifted things back the other direction allowing the end user to modify a stock rom fairly easy. That combined with a few apps like Ninja morph to modify the framework.res files and the end user can create a custom stock rom fairly easy. I mainly run beans because of the AOSP themeing and I tweak the rest in myself. Dont take me wrong I appreciate guys like Beans because its time consuming doing the things he does.
Anyone interested in trading for a verizon lg g2? Already rooted, too...

After messing around with root, and xposed for a while, I'm less concerned that there won't be enough support on this device to do the things that I want. I do have a few more questions, though:
1.) Has anyone started a list of all the apps that come on the stock rom and which we can freeze or delete entirely? (I will happily start this thread if there's interest and support for it.)
2.) Does anyone know how to prevent the volume getting reduced after plugging in headphones? I use my phone for music in my car and would really appreciate it if I didn't have to turn up the volume every time I plugged it in. (Wanam has an option to prevent the warning pop up, but the volume still gets reduced.)

Low development

So maybe it's because I'm coming from a Nexus 6 and a Nexus 6p but the pixel development doesn't seem to be as bountiful. Could be the fact Oreo just got released and devs are busy or the pixel is harder to work with. Not complaining, just an observation. Just scored a pixel for nothing so this should get me through till the pixel 3 comes out. Really nice phone.

Also, the ownership takes a huge hit from sooo many Verizon owners being locked out of any rooting or mods of any kind. Big Red tells us that these phones are not ours to do with what we want. I would bet even after you pay the phone off you still won't be able to unlock your bootloader.

That's true. Guess I didn't think of that. I'm in a area where Verizon is not good at all so to me they don't seem like a big deal. Then again I'm on us cellular which is way small lol. I wish I could get in that TMobile or att train and use a one plus device. That seems like the new Nexus but with no cdma support I can't get it.
This is actually the first phone that I felt satisfied with out of the box. I used be a flashaholic, but now I haven't even rooted my XL. Maybe that sentiment is also common.
yeah dev definitely slowed down after oreo update since it broke twrp for a while and devs had to figure out why rom flashes were bootlooping. just saw pixel dust was released for oreo so if you want a custom rom you can give that one a shot https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/development/rom-pixeldust-marlin-t3581750
It wasn't just Oreo hampering development. Even on Nougat it was a long effort just to dev recovery and root due to new system (A/B partitions) and security.
Stock Oreo is so solid no real need for ROM. It's enough to root and do a few tweaks or install kernel or run root apps. Even on 7.1 the custom roms offer very little over stock to bother with them.
So like I said I'm new to the pixel. What is the hot kernel? I know elemental is always a solid choice but I loved @TheFLash kernel on my Nexus 6p. What are you guys running for some additional battery life?
using kirisakura right now https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/development/kernel-kirisakura-kernel-0-1-t3554330 dev is active and always updates every month

Most use the Elemental X. There was also Franco, but no Oreo compatibility yet.

I think it has a lot to do with how smooth the software is by default and how much Android has evolved. We can now theme are phones without root on stock roms, use picture in picture, split screen apps. Battery life is good, bloat is minimal. I'm running out of reasons to install a rom, there really is no longer a bit performance jump. The only rom I'm really interested in is Paranoid Android when it's Oreo release drops. They offer some very cool features that makes it just worth the effort such as the PIE wheel.
@snoprosledneck88 May I ask how you got a pixel for nothing? Been trying to get one for development/app development but don't feel like spending hundreds when I have a perfectly good phone right now.

It was a replacement phone for a Nexus 6p that had a bad battery.
For me, it has to do with how smooth the phone is out of the box and the evolution of Substratum to enable theming which completes my needs.

That's true. If I was on a "stable build" I would root and use it. (I'm on the Android beta program) I know you can do it without root but you need to buy another app so for right now it's a no-go.
You can root 8.1 beta no problem.

I know you can. Maybe a little lazy haha. How often does android release a new beta? This is my first time being on it, always have flashed roms.
I gotta say I do miss the tons of options that come with custom roms.. Little things like the speed meter in the status bar, customizing the buttons, hardware volume keys to audio skip, etc.
Sure they aren't functional necessities but damn nice amenities once you get used to them. Does there exist something to add these kinds of features to 8.x?
Since Oreo release i don't flash Custom ROMs anymore. too much effort for me and i can spend that time on something productive ? .. I'm not missing any feature either. Skip playlist with volume button can be done with tasker, for data speed on status bar I'm using an app. For missing tiles in the extended notification panel, I'm using"tiles" app.
Right now on 8.1 beta. There will be another DP coming this month and then final launch in December I guess. Most stable DP1 I've even used so far

Dp1 with root has been amazing. Incredible fluidity and insane battery. Zero complaints. Miss some small tweaks, and would love always on display, but we've come a long way from donut and eclair

I did a warranty exchange on my 32GB Verizon Pixel XL and they sent me a brand new 128GB Version. I booted it the 1st time with my TMO SIM and been happy ever since Bootloader UNLOCKED, Rooted, etc. There is however a lack of development compared to the Nexus 6, but flashing on the Pixel is like no other device. I'm new to the community and was confused as hell with the A Partion and B Partion flashing. Never ran into this before the Pixel, but im getting the hang of it...
