Galaxy s7 Edge - Wireless Charging safe? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi there.
I'm wondering if i should buy a wireless charger for my s7 edge, but i wanted to make sure that it wont wear my battery faster.
I read somewhere that due to wireless charging making the phone hot, it may reduce the lifespan of the battery.
Any thoughts on this are welcomed.

Excessive heat will age a battery prematurely. The question is what constitutes excessive. My LG G3, with a standard Qi charger, got very warm when charging. The S7, which is designed to support fast wireless charging, barely gets warm with the same charger (which is not a fast charger). I don't have a fast charger, but I suspect it would generate more heat. Hopefully someone with a fast wireless charger will chime in.
I have to concerns about charging mine with a "slow" Qi charger, though.

As I don't need fast wireless charging I have turned that off and just use normal wireless charging which does fine and doesn't generate much heat.

[Q] N4 very, very slow QI charging

I bought a generic QI charger (there isn't so much choice in HK for QI chargers) to use with my N7 and N4.
My N7 (stock rooted) charges no problem, with a cover as well.
My N4 (CM 10.1.3) on the other hand just does not charge. The QI charger indicates that the phone is on the plate and the phone says it is charging via "wireless", however when I take the phone off the charging plate after say a few hours the battery indicator has only gone up 1-2% and sometimes not even changed. I have the N4 in a poetic bumper and I haven't taken off the plastic that came with the phone on the back. The phone charges fine when plugged into a wall charger.
I should also add the phone gets quite warm when I take it off the charger.
Any thoughts?
This seems like your phone is spending more power than what it receives.
Use better battery stats app to check any drains and some battery application to see how many ma your phone receives during wireless charging.
I have also a Chinese noname qi charger and charges my nexus at 450 -500ma.

I got a cheap generic qi charger from ebay, it stated its output was 1.2 amps, it charged it well but sometimes it would lose its connection or throttle, check your battery graph and see if charging was consistent,

Can I use any wireless charger without damaging the battery?

Hi
I got the Samsung S-Pad charger which the shop states it's for S6 and Samsung states it's for S5, but it's charging my S7 just fine. Using the original charger for my S7 for it. Could it damage the battery or are most of the wireless chargers identical?
Thanks in advance
You can't damage the battery. It's a myth. Use any qi charger you want. As long as your phone charges then you're good.

You can use any qi charger you like, it will not hurt your phone.
I'm using my Samsung charger I bought with my S6... It works fine... But takes almost 3 hours from a low battery... Really want the new Samsung fast charge wireless charger

why won't my s7 wireless charge?

I rest it on charger, and nothing, ever. Is there an option I need to enable or something? This is quite strange, and yes I am rooted if that makes a difference. Thank you for your help in advance.

Are you using the charger and cable that came with your phone?
What kind of charging pad is it?
Are you using a case?
I don't normally use a case but I have done some extensive testing on this phones wireless charging capabilities.
The following results are using the fast charger and cable that came with the phone and a Samsung wireless charging pad.
1. Without a case my phone charges fast wirelessly.
2. With a Spigen Thin Case the phone will charge but not fast wireless.
3. With a heavier thick case the phone doesn't charge wirelessly.
Using a generic Qi wireless charging pad the phone doesn't recognize fast wireless charging at all, even without a case. The phone does charge but at the standard charging rate.
Hope this helps.

It is a mobilepal wireless charging bank....I understand I won't get the fast charging capabilities....But I used it on my s6 edge for over a year, no problems. I have tried removing the case as well, and still nothing. I know it's not the charging pad because I can place my s6 on it and it starts charging immediately...The s7 on the other hand is a different story.

That wireless charger may not be compatible with the S7. Some of the older ones don't work. I had an older Samsung wireless charger, and my S7 didn't charge on it, but my Nexus 7 did.

Wireless Qi Charging, Cases and Heat

Using a Samsung quick charge wireless charger with the S8 Plus, I came to the rather obvious conclusion that using a Qi charger on a phone with a case, will generate considerable excess heat and tend to make the phone warm to hot to touch. The warming effect is greater the thicker the case.
So while many case manufacturers indicate their cases are wireless charging friendly- the real question is whether the increased heat resulting from charging with the case will reduce the life of the battery.
Of course the simple solution is to simply remove the case when wirelessly charging. But doing this nightly is inconvenient and may stretch the case over time- resulting in a less snug fit.
Given the above, the benefits of Qi charging appear minimal at best if phone battery longevity is a concern.

Is wireless charging good for your battery?

The thing causes my S8 to heat up, even when I turn off the fast option, more so than fast wired charging. Is it really good for my battery health when the phone is heating up for the entire two or three hours on the charger?
with the official samsung one that has a fan?
The phone will stop charging automatically if it thinks the temperature is not comfortable.
Do not stress over things that are mentioned in the manual, inductive charging will generate more heat than a wire, but the phone is more than capable of managing the process and stopping if things get too hot.
And no, the temperature isn't going to get high enough to damage your battery. (Unless you are using unauthorized wireless chargers / fakes that can cause the actual metal casing to heat up, google this).
I too had this question back when I bought my Wireless Charger for my S7. Interesting to get more feedback from the others. E.g. Does it shorten the battery life quicker considering it heats up the battery more than on cable.
I've wireless charged my s7 since I got it and also wireless charge my s8. I've also added wireless charging to an LG G3 and G4. IMO it does not degrade the battery and fast. The way I look at it, it saves the charging port from 100's maybe 1000's of plugs/unplugs. It's also a point of device failure, so from that perspective, it's better. Again, IMHO.
notice it too.
How about if you introduce the extra variable of putting the thin metal thingies for magnetic car mounts between the phone and the case? Does that change the situation?
Another variable is a case, which can add to heat build-up. Overall, I have seen nothing definitive that suggests that heat won't adversely effect battery life. Notwithstanding the money companies make selling QI chargers.

Well the fan is for the charger itself isnt it?

I believe its to cool the phone
The fan in the authentic Samsung Desktop charger only activates if fast wireless charging is turned on in the phone.
The fan is to cool the phone.
I use the Samsung desktop stand but usually just normal charge it to which apart from typical heat being discharged I've not experienced any other issue.
I do not use a case.
There is opinion that constantly using Fast Charging can reduce the batteries condition over time. Wether you believe this is personal opinion. I've only Fast charged maybe 2-3 times if I've needed a quick boost of juice.
I noticed this too when I put my new S8+ on the wireless charger built into my truck. This was the first time I tried it so I wasn't sure if the phone getting hot was a normal thing or not

Hi, the phone can handle it if it gets too hot during wireless charging.
Always be assured since that the electric current of wireless charging is 1A, which is lower than the current for wired charging 1.6A. That's to say, it creates less heat while charging. So actually the wireless charging helps prolong the longevity of your lithium-ion battery, except for the longer charging time.
Besides, only semiconductors that flow through current could produce heat (such as your phone's cover), the lithium-ion battery doesn't have current go through, so it's safe from the heat.
I only wireless charge in my car. My dash mount is setup for during the warmer months I will have the the AC it vent blowing cool air directly on the back of the phone. If I don't do this, I get the wireless charging pause error caused by the heat sensors.

Fear not, the phone battery doesn't generate heat itself, the smartphone is actually smart enough to protect itself from the heating generated by the wireless charging unless you put it under the extreme heating weather, so the phone should be safe from the heat.
