i need some help with fixing an issue im having with my galaxy s5
my phone has been working great since iv got it.
a couple weeks ago out of no where i realize the phone just started restarting it self and not passing the first boot animation however when i changed the battery (because have 2 batteries) the phone would work fine. Now trying both batteries the phone will just simply not pass the first boot animation unless i plug it into the wall. The battery im using is fairly new as i bought it about a month ago n iv hardly used it since then. Iv cleaned all the pins on the battery and phone etc. tried factory reset etc im really now sure what else to do. So any help would be really appreciated.
You might try cotton sticks and isopropyl alcohol, to gently clean phone and battery contacts.
solution
well the phone was just restarting on the batter almost like a bootloop but when it was plugged into the wall it booted right up. I took it to the technician only to realize i needed a brand new battery because both the batteries i had were swollen apparently and it works.

Caveat - This is my son's phone, and only the recent observations are my own. I can't be sure he didn't do something to munge it up, though I am fairly certain he has not tried to flash it (I haven't either). In any case . . .
I bought an unlocked SMT5600 on eBay about 6 weeks ago. It worked great for about 3 weeks, then went on the fritz. It started by only booting to the red-green-blue OS screen. Removing the battery did nothing to reset it. It was still doing this when I retrieved it from my son. When I finally had time to look at it four days later, it booted once or twice to that screen, but then stopped doing even that. I have since done research online and not seen a similar situation. Other observations - there is no change if I swap out the battery for one that I know is charged. After replacing the battery, when I insert the charge cord (wall plug, not USB to PC) the power light flashes red briefly, then goes black and never comes on again.
Of course the eBay seller is telling me I'm SOL at this point. Before the problems began, I actually bought three more of these phones from the same seller and none has had any problems. My son is not into modding or installing programs, and tells me he has done neither. I think this is likely the case, but it is conceivable he or a friend might have tried something. So I am looking for assistance/direction in what to try next. Although I don't think I have the correct torx to disassemble it right now, I am willing to get the right tools and give that a go to avoid a $150 paperweight.
Thanks, mastman
booting to loader screen
I had this problem, turned out to be a faulty / stuck camera switch
check it clicks well, to check for stuck,
if it clicks well you will need to open the phone to check it with a meter.
not sure why its gone dead now, but sounds a little like a over flat battery.
Ive fixed these in the past by using a 300mah 3v suply for 20 secs at a time to bring it back up to a level the phone will charge.
please be very carefull li-ion cells are very dangerous, try useing a known good battery first in the phone to check its charging
good luck

My SMT5600 choked as it was being flashed, now it won't charge nothing, just a paperweight. Is there anyway to resurrect it? At all?
Thanks
I have the HD2 with HD7 flashed on it, and I've had it that way for quite a while now, well all of a sudden today, my battery completely died, so I plugged it in, and it just keeps rebooting, and it won't do anything unless it's plugged in. I saw somewhere about checking the gold prongs on the back, so I messed with them. One was bent and I straighted it, but it still keeps rebooting. So I have no clue what to do now.
Well try to take out the battery for 5 mins. Then put the charger into the phone. Then put in the battery. And see if it will boot up.
If it doesn't, then you need to charge the battery another way, your HD2 won't charge it. Say use someone else's HD2 that has winmo or cLK installed.
What I ended up doing, and I am not sure if it is a long term fix yet because the phone is still charging is. I took the SD card out, then started the phone. When it started it was like a brand new phone, then I put the SD card back in, turned the phone off then turned it back on again and it worked. Not sure why but it did. But if it happens again I will try your method. Thanks!
Ah nice. Having a dead battery sure is a pain. Just remember not to let it die next time, or you might be in trouble.
haha you are so right!
i found a solution to the HD2 charge problem but....
you won't like it.
one day i accidentally discharged my phone without putting it up for a recharge. the phone died.
so i try charging it with the stock charger, and the phone starts, but then mysteriously starts rebooting.
so i determine it's the battery. i buy another battery.
that didn't solve the issue though....... the fun part was, i went to a store and they had the solution. they told me the stock charger was the problem.
the problem, pertains from the charger not giving enuff charge in the beginning to sustain it's boot cycle. so the phone keeps rebooting.
the only solution the store had for me was to simply buy a charger with a *little* more kick.
so i did, and that solved the problem.
i bought a nokia charger with the same charge plug as the hd2.
the hd2 charges perfectly now.
yo bro just to let you know you really should research stuff before you ask. the symptom you are speaking of is well known and well documented. try switching roms by doing a system wipe in cwm. if it continutes to reboot after that then its the motherboard. the hd2 has inherent thermal issues. the solder underneath the cpu heats up and no longer makes good contact with the mobo. your options are replace or bake in the oven (there is a whole thread on it) or replace it. some work some dont after putting it in the oven. sad thing for an hd2 owner to have but hey with xda at least we all share the pain
I have the same problem when I use my HTC charger. But when I use my Samsung charger (came with my Galaxy Ace) HD2 boots normally. Also I noticed that when I use the phone on HTC charger battery keeps droping. I think it uses more power then the HTC charger charges. With my Samsung charger i dont have this problem.
Hi all, tried searching for some help but couldn't find anything of any use, plenty of similar things only but not quite the same.
Basically, my phone had been in use today, as normal, nothing different, nothing new installed. I put it down on the table while I did some work around the house, an hour late I picked it up and it was off. It had around 70% power when I last looked at it, Not only had it turned off, it was so hot I couldn't hold it for more than a moment. After letting it cool down, I tried to turn it on and nothing at all happened. I decided to plug it in and leave it to charge a bit, but when I came back to it again half an hour later it was still dead and hot as hell again.
I have tried three different chargers and even a new battery that I bought in town just this morning, thinking the battery was the problem. Still exactly the same thing happening with new battery, wont charge, phone heating up within minutes to the point where I cant hold it. Heat seems to be building up underneath the memory card slot.
I did manage to boot it up briefly whilst it was plugged in before it got too hot but had to turn it off again to cool it down. It seemed to boot just fine on that occasion. Also managed to get it into recovery and did a cache wipe as well as a full factory wipe but no difference. Again I managed to boot it after the wipe, seemed to start up as you would expect a first boot to do, asking me to set up the phone, but again it was no gaining charge and was heating up very fast so had to turn it off again.
Any ideas what the hell has gone wrong with me phone?
I have a repair pack from Samsung on route as its only four months old, so they will do a warranty repair or a swap, but while I'm waiting, thought it best to ask here if anyone has any ideas.
Sorry for such a long post, if I need to post anything more specific feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance
I experienced such before...
Phone heats up a lot and shuts off when charging. I send the phone in for repair, the service center identify it as faulty motherboard and got a replacement handset...
It is just bad quality components in Galaxy S4. Go and change your phone at service center.
Thanks for that, I had a feeling it was motherboard, processor or USB board, Was kind of hoping I was wrong and there was something I could do at home to fix it but oh well...
Does it matter that I have the new German 4.3 firmware on a UK handset with multi-csc? Knox flag is still 0x0 if that matters to warranty lol. I cant flash anything stock if I cant turn the thing on lol.
Why is the S4 such a poor quality phone for a flagship, seems to be so many faults with the phone and battery. I've had both the cracked screen issue as well as this crash for no reason. My S2 on the other hand is still going strong and working perfectly despite being dropped a few times and having had no new parts or battery replaced. Its covered in marks and dents from prolonged use and still keeps going. Had that since launch. Back to using it while waiting for the four month old S4 to be fixed.
EDIT:
Strange new development, the original battery doest do anything any more. Nothing happening at all, no charging screen, no heating up, nothing. New battery still not charging and causing phone to heat up. Did manage to boot the phone up again for a few minutes last night and besides heat and not charging, it seemed to work. Making me think its not the motherboard at fault now or surely it wouldn't turn on. No idea what's going on now.
This morning, my phone has started to act up. It was working well last night, but now... when I put it to charge... it either:
1) doesn't do anything
2) requires the cable to be repeatedlty inserted in order to register an input
3) does accept the cable, charges for a bit, then disconnects, connects, disconnects, connects and so on
I tried with three chargers and two cables. All of which work well with other microUSB phones I have laying around.
I put my phone to charge a couple of minutes ago (with the phone facing down, figured so it may help with the contacts) and it worked for about 5 minutes. Now... it suddenly disconnected and started connecting/disconnecting again . Then, it stops disconnecting and stays connected, but not for long...
The phone IS charging for the time it's connected, as I see the percentage has gone up from 93% to 95% in all this time.
I took a tooth pick and scrubbed the inside of the microUSB port (took out a lot of dust and such). I know that's been an issue on the Galaxy Note, but here, on the S4...
I guess I'll have to turn off the phone, take an old tooth brush, dump it in alcohol, and scrub the inside of the microUSB port... that has worked on the Galaxy Note .
----------
Regardless. Anyone else... care to input your thoughts?
PS: The battery isn't swollen, and speaking of which, I have recently swapped batteries with a friend - so this battery is like brand new, manufactured in March 2014... it can't possibly be faulty .
You can try to clean it. But the USB seems be ****ed. You can take a look this GUIDE for change it manually. Its easy but it need a lil time. Good luck :highfive:

I cleaned it with some alcohol (more like dipped it in it :cyclops: ). All seems to be working now.
Something similar happened to the Note 1, where I had to do this for like 5 times before it started working again... I just didn't expect this to happen on the S4, as well...
Everyone, please help me. I don't know what else to do. I am desperate here!!!
So, I've had my Galaxy Note 4 since the day they came out (October 24th, 2014), and I baby my phone.
Anyway, I've never dropped it, got it wet - nothing.
Last week, out of nowhere (I don't recall downloading anything out of the ordinary), my phone started getting extremely sluggish. I wiped the cache partition, but that didn't solve my issues.
Then, the phone was shutting down (abruptly, not powering down) out of nowhere. So, I pulled the battery, and did so many other recommended things.
Now, I cannot turn on my phone without first pulling the battery. Every so often, the phone shuts down (abruptly) and I have to pull the battery to start it up again.
I've changed batteries to back to my original battery, but that didn't help.
Then, every so often a screen comes on with the Android character saying, "Downloading. Do Not Turn Off Target !!"
Please help me!!! What can I do? What should I do?
I love this phone and it's gonna be a long time before the Galaxy Note 8 comes out!

Could be a faulty battery because the symptoms sounds similar to mine.
What happened to me was :
Phone would shut down randomly and would only switch on when plugged and charging.
Phone would shut down randomly and would only switch on after pulling out the battery.
Phone would randomly reboot.
Phone would discharge at a very quick pace. 20% for 5-20 minutes of usage.
Phone would only switch on when plugged into a power source but would bootloop when unplugged, even at 100%.
I managed to remedy the situation by buying a new battery. Although you did mentioned that you replaced it with the original battery, I suspect that there might be some sort of batch issue or something when it comes to the Note 4 battery. This current battery that I'm using is the third battery I bought for my Note 4 (because Samsung did not honour their warranty) and the only one that did not came from a Samsung authorised dealer and so far the issues seems to be gone. My phone stopped shutting down randomly and now I'm able to get 4 hour SOT with 12 hours of battery. Not that I'm suggesting you to get a fake battery but it's worth a try to see that it's not a motherboard issue.
My first two battery that came from Samsung and an authorised dealer both had issues within one year respectively and if you bring it to Samsung they will claim it's a motherboard issue and will charge you a few hundreds for a replacement so a new battery is worth a try.
So, I replaced my OEM battery with an Anker battery over a year ago. When this issue started, I put the OEM battery back in. The same issues occurred and the battery drained faster, so I put the Anker one back in.
Did adding a new battery fix your issues? It seems like you might have had the same issues as me.
Did that boot screen with the big Android guy come up on your phone as well?
Did you do a factory reset upon loading the new battery in?
I really love this phone, as you do, and I really want it to work and last!

Hi there,
I had exact the same problems. I think it is your flashmemory that is causing the problem. When the phone suddenly reboots into downloadmode you normally will see an error message in red saying "emmc read failure". This is your flashmemory. I ordered a new motherboard via alieexpress and replaced it myself, which is not difficult. You can find tutorial on youtube.
My phone is working perfect now.

Same issue here, started over a week ago, I have tried so many things, no results, you can't do anything, just gotta change the motherboard.
Same issues for me also. I replaced the battery, with no positive effect. The only thing to help is installing the app wake lock. Phone now works, but this does not solve the poor ram handling.
