For the last few weeks I am unable to restore backed-up apps. I have tried on three different clean-flashed ROMs. TruePureX, AICP, and PureNexus. When I flash a new ROM, install TiBU (I have pro key), set the backup directory on my sd card, it says there are no apps to restore. It sees there are 61 backup files but I can't batch restore or manually one-by-one. I have also tried deleting the existing backups and creating new ones. Also tried moving the backups to the internal sd card. Anyone else seeing this?
I can't get it to delete system apps anymore. My guess is that its something to do with "systemless" root. Try another app, I found one that in my case. Although it stinks cause TB has ALWAYS been a must have app.

I don't have systemless root. TiBu is vital. This really sucks. I think I'm going to try reformatting my sd card this weekend.. I have a trouble ticket in the with the devs but I have not heard anything from them.
Reformatting the external SD didn't change anything. It was worth a shot. I took screenshots of what I see when I try to restore with TiBu. In the first shot you can see with a manual restore the restore button is missing for a backed up app that is not installed. And the second is from the batch restore that shows no apps to restore, there should be one.
I noticed the same problem across multiple roms as well. I wasn't able to figure out why or how to fix it though.
Any chance you're using a knock-off SD card? I ran into this when I purchased a purported Samsung SD card that was a fake. After two days of odd errors trying to restore a TiBu backup, someone from XDA asked me the same question. There are videos online to find out whether you got a real or dud SD card.
[I was able to return the fake card and complained about the Seller.]

I'm pretty sure it's a real Samsung card. All other backup and restores work. I keep my TWRP backups on it too. Only TiBu has the problem.
If backup and restore works to internal memory, then try another card to eliminate the card being an issue. If backing up to internal memory doesn't work then it is software/app related.

Yep. I've tried using the internal sd with the same result. I'm pretty sure it's not my external sd because sms backup and restores work and so does TWRP. From what I can tell TiBu sees the backups. It reports there are 61 files. And, since this has started, I've let google restore the apps at setup and then I am able to restore the data with TiBu (not a preferred method).
Can someone tell me what the permissions are on the TitaniumBackup folders and then the backup files within (someone with a working TiBu of course)? I want to check those.

IDK on the permissions, checked in Solid Explorer & it doesn't show them where it normally does... I do know that TiBU works though, I restored apps this morning & everything worked seamlessly.
Have you tried enabling installation of apps from unknown sources? Not sure if that'll fix it, but it's worth a shot.

So my permissions are different on my external sd card but I can't change them. So I moved my backups to my internal sd card (again), checked permissions, tried different storage (file system & document), and no change. I still haven't heard anything from the TiBu developers. Could it have something to do with the device id? When you flash a new ROM it asks if you want to keep the new id or restore the old one. I always just keep the new one but is that an issue? They think I'm putting it on multiple devices? Stray arrows, I'm just trying to figure it out.

Can you change permissions on other files and it's just tibu you can't? Or try other file manager? I tried both root explorer and mixplorer and were able to make changes easily. Otherwise I'm guessing it's because of mm vs lp?

I thought it might have been a permissions and/or a non-writable external sd card problem but I was able to change the permissions on the TiBu folder on my card.
Also tried setting selinux to permissive. Nada.

I've looked but can't find it. Not gotten any updates on tibu lately, so that isn't it. Hopefully I'll find post at some point. Other stuff aside, just another reason I'm staying on lp. Not sure if you can revert back and see if things work as expected.

ive been trying to figure this out since yesterday but i am completely lost and really need help..
this started yesterday. i had my phone connected with adb and pulled some files (LatinIME.apk, framework-res.apk). i did not push or delete any. around the same time i download fx camera. all the work i did was actually just on the computer. the only thing i did on the phone around that time was use root explorer to check the name of the .apk for fx camera.
im not sure if any of that could possibly mean anything but i thought maybe it was worth mentioning.
here are the symptoms. right after i was done the phone was acting sluggish and crappy (it always does when i disconnect from usb since i switched to froshedyo v10) so i rebooted. upon booting up, 90% of apps were missing. i didnt feel like using titanium backup to manually "ok" each install, so i opted for a fairly recent NAND backup to restore to. i did but upon booting up, the same apps were missing.. very weird right? i know they were there when i made the backup.. so now i decided i had to use titanium. but when i began i noticed that it wouldnt install any app. it would hang on the "installing" screen forever. i rebooted and this time tried an app from the market, only to have the same results.
i did try wiping everything and starting fresh (with froshedyo v10). a strange thing happened. after logging in and setting up the basics i left it alone to restore the apps. when i checked later i had the notification, "applications partially restored". i never had that before.. it seemed like maybe a few more apps were there, but not much. i was mostly in the same boat. and again, titanium backup and market would not install any apps..
please help.. whats going on??
---------latest info--------
i wiped everything and tried to start fresh with a brand new copy of nonsensikal 16.1. no apps were restored, and i am unable to install or uninstall any app on the phone. it will just hang on the installing/uninstalling screen.
i have done multiple wipes and flashes, testing each time to see if anything is working, but it has not worked once. i can not install or uninstall any apps.
Were you using Apps2sd? I wonder if it could be something with that. Especially if your rom seems to be fine. Is everything else showing up on your sd card?
the file manager on the phone shows all my sd card contents just fine.
i believe when i first installed this rom about a week ago i did find an option somewhere in settings that said "choose location to install apps" (i chose external) and "allow moving of apps to external" (i chose yes).

I don't think you have a market problem...it sounds like an sd card issue which would explain alot of the symptoms including issues when unmounting from pc. If all your apps are installed on the sd and the card doesn't mount right they will "dissapear" as you have described. Try changing the setting to install apps back to internal and then apps should install. If apps install after you do that it probably means the sdcard is corrupted so you will need to back up the files on your sd and then reformat the card. PLEASE remember to back up the sd card before reformatting since it has your nand backups on it. The market fix is only a fix for apps not showing in the market not on the phone.
lol its ok rhamej.
i think i should clarify though that i do have a market. it may be worth noting that i used to have a blue themed market, which during this problem seems to have reverted to the stock green market. but i do have a market.
when i try to install from the market, it just kind of stalls when i accept the terms and permissions needed by the app. like, when i click the final "ok" which should then lead to the app actually beginning to download, it just stops. doesnt freeze the market or FC, its almost like the button is unresponsive.
when i try to install an app via file manager from sd card, it hangs on the "installing" screen. same with titanium backup.
----------developments------------
i couldnt stand not having my apps so i did a NAND back to nonsensikal. my apps were all restored this time but im still having problems installing.
from the sd card: hangs on install.
from the market: now will download, but hangs on install.

quick question. what format should my micro sd card be in? i know i formatted it right around the time i got it, to FAT32. im assuming thats correct but i would like to double check. google isnt answering my question fast enough..
still no progress.
i wiped everything, flashed a new nonsensikal 16.1. apps didnt automatically come back. i can not install or uninstall apps on the phone. they all hang on the installing/uninstalling screen.
how could this have happened? how can i fix it? i will gladly do a more thorough wipe. i wiped data and davlick. what else could i do to completely reset my phone to fix this problem? that is assuming that there is no other ideas of options.. i hope there is!
edit: in regards to previous ideas, i reformatted my sd card (FAT32) and replaced all the files.

You could try the flashback 21 file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792026
That should take you back to stock and replace your custom recovery with the default one. You could then re-root. I don't know if that's what you want, but that would be about as complete of a reset as you could get as far as I know.
Does anyone else know if this is the best option? I would hate to mislead...
I had a problem similar to this after I dropped my phone. I could not install any apps (market or .apk) and reading of my SD card was spotty at best. What fixed it for me was first deleting the .android-secure folder on the sd card. [NOTE!: this may delete some/all apps/app data you have so I hope you have a backup]. I have no idea why but the .android-secure was not happy at all ;] I believe you have to delete it on a computer because android file managers just can't do it.

Did you put all your files back on your sd card after reformatting it? I would try reformatting the card and then see if it works before you put your files back on. Like the previous poster said the android_secure folder could be messed up and if your copying it back could still cause issues.

well that android_secure thing seems to have been the problem! thank you guys very much! i just deleted it and rebooted and i am now able to install and uninstall apps, both from the sd card and market.
it got to the point where i couldnt connect via usb unless i was in recovery so things were getting pretty frustrating. im glad its over. any guesses what might have caused this craziness?
So I've got the froyo now and had a problem and had to start over. Before the restart I had saved quit a few apps to my SD Card... clean install don't detect them. Do I need to just format card and reinstall from market or what?
I did a clean install too. Did you use titanium back to save the apps? Thats how I restored all my apps.

My lib files are still linked. but maybe thats the problem with my phone freezing 20 times a day now. IDK. Hopefully an update to the update will come soon cuz Im sick to death of it freezing.
I spent about 2 hours last night trying to get Link2SD to work on my flipside and could not. I followed the guide and set a main FAT32 partition and a secondary ext2 partition and the phone rejected and told me to make teh 2ndary FAT32 so i did that and then the phone rejecting it and said something else it.
Anybody care to explain how exactly they got this working? I tried searching through the main post but thats 100 pages of questions with few answers and I coudln't find anything that helped.
Mine was a hassle the first few times I tried on eclair as well. I just kept changing the size of the partition until finally it worked. I couldnt tell you the exact steps as it was long ago.

Completely reformat your card to fat32, then using partition magic, create the second partition as FAT. Put card in phone, reformat, run Link2SD, and reboot phone.
RESTART Link2SD and go hog wild moving your programs to sd card...
If you backed up ypur card to your pc, copy over the folders to the sd card.
I know reformatting is extra (uneeded?) Steps, but it worked juat fine for my wife's phone. A restart gives her almost 58 megs free...
I apologize as I tried to search but I suppose I'm not good at that either.
I am trying to point a podcast program to download to my external sd (microsd) card. I cannot figure out how to find the correct patch to tell the program. The stock file explorer says one thing and I downloaded Astro and it tells me another.
I can copy files to the card (I have the camera saving pics there).
What am I doing wrong that I can't figure the path to a created folder on my micro sd card?
Thanks for any help.
mnt/sdcard/extStorages/SdCard/
Thanks. Something is wrong then. I have tried with BeyondPod and Pocketcast to point them to download to the external sd card with no luck.
Anyone have any luck doing this or suggestions?
I agree.
There is something wrong with the way SD card is handled.
Titanium backup for instance only shows 440Mb capacity, Root explorer shows 1Gb and system settings sees it as 32Gb.
Weird!
Surely someone has tried to do what I am trying. Anyone?
Okay, I did a LOT of reading here and I THINK I know what is going on. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Apparently, apps cannot write to the external card including aftermarket file explorers. There might be a fix here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1454178 but it requires root. I have never rooted anything so I am a bit scared to try.
I hope this may help someone else having a similar issue.

Yes, you won't be able to play DRM protected films (incl. those from the market) and probably Google Music's MP3 store won't work anymore, too. I'm sure there will be more of the like.
I rooted mine, corrected the SD card's permissions, I'm able to set the font size (which breaks TouchWiz, you'll need to have another launcher installed beforehand) and the more.
But: it's not easily revertable, you would have to flash the original firmware as far as I've read.

So I updated to Lollipop via the root method in this forum. My apps are having problems accessing the SD Card. For example, in PowerAmp, I can't delete music on my sd card. Titanium backup will not create backups because it can't access the SD Card. BitTorrent Sync is another app that doesn't have access to the SD Card.
I thought that Lollipop allowed apps to have access to the Sd Card now unlike Kit Kat. I believe the App has to be written to take advantage of this in Lollipop. Is the issue that my apps don't support this? Is there some fix i can do like in kit kat? Is anyone else having this problem?
You're correct. It depends on the app. For instance, es file explorer will prompt for it and have you select the bottom level of the sd card ( I know, it's the root directory, but didn't want to use that term because it has nothing to do with the phone being rooted and wanted to avoid confusion)...anyway, after that selection you can do things as expected through that app and the sdcard. btw, I'm completely stock.

When I upgraded to lollipop I couldn't write or delete from my sd card. Even with es file explorer. I had to go to the play store and find an app to fix it. Just search SD Fix and choose one with good ratings (I can't remember the one I used)
are you both rooted/custom Rom? for stock and me at least, I just updated to lollipop then updated the es file explorer app and that was it.

I am rooted, no custom ROM. I just installed ES File Explorer (didn't have it installed before) and I was able to navigate to the SD Card and delete files. So I'm wondering if PowerAmp, TBU and BitTorrent Sync don't have the functionality yet? I'm going to try and un-install and re-install each one and see if that helps. When I upgraded from KK to LP, I did a data restore for apps. Not sure if that might have messed anything up.
I think you're probably OK and didn't mess anything up...best bet is to check with the app dev directly to see if they've considered or are possibly working towards that. So far, I've only encountered one app that uses that functionality from my set of many that's installed...that one is es file explorer. I'm checking with the devs of a couple others I use.

Ok, so I tried un-installing and re-installing BitTorrent Sync but I was still getting a message that it did not have permission to write to the SD Card. So I installed this, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix , even though it's for Kit Kat and it worked. I've only tested it with BitTorrent Sync but I'm sure it will work with the other two apps.

So I wonder if I should just use an SD Card Fix app in the meantime because I really need the ability for those 3 apps to edit files on my SD Card.

Sd card fixer for kit kat worked for me. Titanium works fine now and i can backup to the extsdcard.
Sent from either galaxy tab 10.1 4.4.4 or Verizon Galaxy S5 on rooted 5.0
Yeah, looks like that fixed my issue with Titanium backup and Poweramp.
From what I can tell, even though I used the app you recommended, not all apps get access. The one that I found that didn't is didn't is Dolphin Browser. I was hoping to be able to save to card. Oh well. I know the fix worked because titanium backup will backup to card. I guess that I may have to email the developer.
Hi,
Have been running Invicta/LOS unofficial since about December. In all builds, I have not been able to write to the ext SD card with Titanium Backup. However, on the 4/20 build, I was able to get it working by selecting DocumentProvider storage in TBU. Unfortunately, since I have upgraded to the 5/16 build, I can't get it to work anymore. It will write/backup to the internal storage, but it will not write to the ext SD card.
Is there a mod I can perform to enable writing to the ext SD card?
Thanks!
Tried reinstalling the app and wiping the caches? There shouldn't be a reason why TiB won't work. Check if it has all the permissions. In the end, try setting SE Linux permissive if nothing helps.
Yeah...wiped the cache, deleted all/any TB folders on internal & external, and reinstalled. Still won't let me write to the external card for some reason. Not the end of the world but frustrating.

In the /Android/data folder on your sdcard, create a subfolder titled com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup. Then select it for your backup folder in Titanium backup. Should work without issues.

I'll be a monkey's uncle! I've tried this method previously but was unsuccessful for some reason. It works now.
Thanks!
P.S. Wasn't even going to bother trying this way again, but figured I would try just once more to prove it wouldn't work. Silly me.
P.S.S. It's kind of a convoluted path, but as long as it works.

I get that! I learned this a over a year ago on my old Asus TF300T tablet. I believe that the transition from Lollipop to Marshmallow is where it became necessary. If I remember right, the capitalized letters are needed for it to work properly.
Glad it worked for you! :good:
