I've got a strange S4 on my hands. Its stock 4.4.2 was reporting it as i9505, international S4 LTE version.
However the download mode is reporting it as SPH-L720. Nvm, just a little hiccup I thought, let's go ahead.
I managed to get it to root and install TWRP 3.0.1.0 S4 LTE version. However after this it started throwing the Recovery is not SELinux enforcing error. It was still booting fine however. Could enter both S4 Stock rom and TWRP.
I wiped its data, cache, dalvik, and system, formatted to F2FS. So far so good. Installed AOSP 6 by JD Team, installed stock GApps. Booted straight into
Great. Everything's working perfect. Now I inserted my sim and whoop-de-doo. Sim shows up in home menu, but no antenna activity.
That's strange, why isn't it working? I thought the modem firmware was out of date or incompatible with Android M. Decided to find the latest FW matching my modem description and flash it.
Except, this is what showed up in the data I'd taken care to gather before beginning anything:
Model Number: GT-I9505
Baseband version: I9505OLBFNB4
Build Number: KOT49H.V1
AP: I9505XXUBFNB7
CP: I9505OLBFNB4
CSC: I9505DXUFNB3
Found a firmware I thought matched and flashed it. Rebooted, and suddenly phone won't boot at all.
Can't find a firmware now. PIT's gone. Phone is showing "SECURE FAIL: KERNEL" and "System software not authorized b Samsung has been found on your phone" on normal power on where it refuses to boot at all. Can't access TWRP either.
I can still go into Download mode and Odin can still access the phone.
I'm completely lost with how to proceed with this now however. Phone model numbers do not match anything, PIT gone, TWRP gone, serial numbers do not match anything, Kies refuses to initialize the phone, etc etc.
Any help would be welcome. I had opened over 50 tabs before I suddenly lost heart and closed all of them and took to writing this post. Thanks for reading.
EDIT: Further checking the IMEI shows the phone is actually a i9500 according to SNDeep.com. This just keeps getting worse.
if you bought this from a second hand from a phone shop it's state is down them not having a clue what they are doing and flashing firmware onto it. pretty much everyone here has the not enforcing SEandroid on recovery and kernel it's nothing to worry about.
AOSP 6.0.1 is almost a unified rom so it works with all but a few variants of s4, the problem is whatever you tried to flash after that, you didn't mention what that was. but it's kinda beside the point now.
when you enter download mode whatever model it mentions there is the firmware want to download and flash via odin.

I flashed a MDCModemOnly version of the CP firmware. Since the phone said its a SPH-L720, I thought the latest unlocked European rom would fix the antenna problems.
Clearly I screwed that up.

The SPH-L720 is a Sprint S4. So you'll have to flash that firmware. I believe sprint is a US carrier only, is that right?
So it's a CDMA (or CMDA?) device I guess. That means it uses different frequencies to connect to the network. I'm not really sure what I saying, lol. I just know that GSM and CDMA are a bit different when it comes to network connectivity.

Sprint, as far as I know, don't lock the bootloaders. Only AT&T and Verizon do.
Here you have the CF Auto root thread for the SPH-L720 if you still are concerned.
Is there any place to download the firmware aside from sammobile.com? They're demanding I pay them to download a firmware at more than 15kb/s!

You could try SamFirm. It's a tool for downloading Samsung firmwares, but it requires some info about the phone and, since you can't boot up, it will be hard to get.

Wow, thanks, that worked like a charm! Already had pulled my PDA, CP and CSC, knew the region and Downloading mode reported SPH-L720.
Currently downloading at 400kB/s.
Voila! Works. Stock SGS4 5 installed, only Knox Warranty set to 0x1, everything else's fine.
I've already rooted the phone with cf-auto-root and Odin, installed TWRP Manager, now what?
TWRP manager is asking me to install Busybox, should I do that? I'm attempting to install TWRP recovery and flash JDCTeam's AOSP 6.

TWRP can be flashed with Odin or with an app called Flashify.
I recommend the Odin method.
But if you want to install it with TWRP manager, there is no harm in that. But you do need to install busybox. Just follow the app's prompts.
Followed your advice, installed TWRP 2.8.4 via Odin, upgraded it via TWRP to 3.0.1.0.
Following this I've tried installing JDCTeam's AOSP 6.0.1 again. However, my cellular network has been deactivated. AGAIN.
Now what?
EDIT: My baseband is reporting L720VPUGOK3 according to the current ROM.

Is that the most recent?
It could be caused by the fact that the phone was repaired with mismatched parts.
Or kernel related. They have a stock aosp kernel that you can flash. Try with that.

Flash it via ODIN's AP command?
EDIT: Yes, I believe so. It is the one that was returned as most recent by both Sammobile and Samtool, as well as according to official samsung releases.
EDIT 2: Flashed it via TWRP, no difference. Still no network.
I don't get it, this is odd. The team lists L720 as supported, and my phone is unlocked, after all I can use the default SGS4 stock ROM with my SIM and network, so why isn't it working on this?

I've done that, still not getting cellular however.
Baseband version was NB4 on the original rom. Moving it to latest stock SGS4 brought it up to OK3. That is what JDCTeam's AOSP6 is also reporting it as.

You can try and update the modem and bootloader even further, manually, via Odin.
There is a dedicated thread in the general section.
I don't think it will work, but it may be worth a try.
If I look further...
Phone Model = GT-I9505
Bootloader = SPH-L720
IMEI = a GT-I9500 phone
I think it's a GT-I9505 phone with SPH-L720 motherboard and IMEI that tampered from a GT-I9500 phone. Really, I would bring back this phone to the seller.

Exactly. Things are really weird with this. But returning this isn't an option. Phone belongs to a friend and he's been using it a while. Can't take this back now.
Also restoring to stock wiped out the international unlock. Phone is showing Sprint in top left corner.
Right now the phone is 101% stock 5.0.1. If anyone can please help guide me through unlock this permanently for all future foreseeable ROMs and flashes, please.
Managed to unlock it via the S4 Unlocker, following the instructions in that thread.
Still can't get 4G LTE to run on it like it was before, but can confirm 3G HSPA+ mode is working fine on it.

I have a "GT-I9505". I was able to Odin TWRP. My objective is actually to turn it into an SGH-I337M, a bootloader unlocked version of SGH-I337, which is locked. All 3 are S4 variants. The mainboard of my SGH-I337M recently died. Since I couldn't find a replacement I337M board anywhere, and my research shows the mainboard of these 2 variants are interchangeable, hardware-wise, I bought an I9505 mainboard and dropped it in. An I9505 certainly comes with I9505's bootloader and baseband. Since I live in the U.S., I'd like to replace at least the baseband to North America, ie. my original I337M baseband. However, when I tried to Odin either the entire I337M stock ROM or just the baseband alone, it kept failing due to (AUTH). Since I was able to Odin TWRP, does it not imply the bootloader of my I9505 is unlocked? If it is unlocked, why is it preventing the baseband or the entire ROM from being flashed? I do have this "WRITE PROTECTION: Enable" message on my download mode screen too, but you guys have determined it can be ignored. Thank you in adv for any tips.

The I9505 is bootloader unlocked and comes that way by default; it's the US that loves locking bootloaders. Regardless, you CANNOT mix and match boards and basebands, as the low-level firmware in the S4 will detect the mismatch and reject the change. I know, as I attempted it with a flashable zip on my I9505. The device refused it and would not install it. Odin will reject it as well, for the same reason.
You would have to re-program the cellular radio's low level firmware to accept North American bands. People have tried it, including myself, but most of them were unsuccessful, including me. There is a thread in the forums here explaining what to do. Read it, and good luck.
I recently bit off more than I could chew with my S4 (I337). I had 4.4.2 KitKat on it and wanted to root it to add teathering. I decided thought there was no root for 4.4.2 so I thought I would try downgrading to 4.3 then root. This seemed best because I didn't like the way the SD card is handled in 4.4.2 and some of my apps (like ftp server) have stopped working.
When I got the phone back up from flashing with Odin it says it has version 4.3. My WiFi will not turn on. If I slide the switch to on it slides right back to off and the phone tells me that an operation was block (can't remember the full verbage. I have installed and attempted to install many things on my phone. I have used recovery mode / Odin3 and Kies (Kies doesn't allow much).
At this point I just would like to get my phone back to 4.4.2 with the WiFi working. Then I can restore my backup and be back to square one with a lesson learned.
I have an I337 that currently thinks it has version 4.3 on it. The baseband version is I337UCUFNC1 currently. The build number is JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2.
If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. I have read and tried many things over a two day period and finally decided to ask for help.
Had this issue before on my Bell Canada S4, but don't recall exact way to fix it.
Think the solution was to find an older (might be newer) stock. I think I used a different version like the Telus Canada version as well and it ended up working. Then you update through kies after.

Wifi does not work because of the modem/kernel mismatch, i.e. MDB modem and MK2 kernel. Not sure what your goal was when you began flashing your phone but since you fortunately did not flash teh MK2 bootloader you are still able to locate the MDB full odin tar and flash back to stock which will resolve your issue.

If you don't care about losing your MDB unlocked bootloader you can get to the latest kitkat firmware by flashing the NB1 full odin tar from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674223, then once flashing is complete go to settings/more/about phone/software update then take the ota update to NC1 which is the latest kitkat version for our phone.
But what I would do is keep your unlocked MDB bootloader and since you already flashed the MK2 AP file you can get your phone running well again by flashing the MK2 modem: https://mega.co.nz/#!pwESna5I!YK7EKG37xXIG1ReB-Z-mfSMoXNkXQ9t2EdMK9ofgJKg

Same question, different thread!
Not even an hour ago did I answer the same question in a different thread: How do I get WiFi working on my S4?
Well here you go.
My original answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-4-4-2-nb1-t2850878/post54978150#post54978150
The problem is, in order to get WiFi working, you need to install the NB1 modules, but to do that, you need to install Safestrap. However, you can not install Safestrap because the app keeps closing on you. There is a simple fix to this, which I will explain later. For now, just read this WHOLE post BEFORE you do anything, and keep in mind that I am NOT held liable if you mess up your phone. Use this at your own risk.
1.) Root your phone
If you're already rooted with something like SuperSU or Superuser, skip this. If not, read ahead. Download and install the Towelroot APK file attached to this post, open it, and click 'make it ra1n'. If your phone didn't reboot, now you have root (they need to trademark that). Now, down below, I also included the APK for SuperSU. Download and install it. Now open it. When you open it, let it install the 'Normal' way, not via the 'TWRP/CWM' way. Also, when it asks you to disable KNOX, say yes, wait a couple of minutes (it will still be loading) and reboot your phone. Open up SuperSU again, click 'Yes' to disable KNOX again, and now you have a good base to start from.
2.) Install Safestrap AFTER fixing the error
The error your are getting is easily fixed. Go to the Play Store and install 'SELinux Mode Changer'. Open it, grant it root access, and change the mode to 'Permissive'. Now, open up Safestrap again (you mentioned you already installed it), and it shouldn't force close. Click 'Install', and if the 'Reboot to Recovery' option below is not grayed out after that then it worked.
3.) Download and install the NB1 modules
On your phone, download the included NB1 modules ZIP file I attached for you, and once that is done you need to reboot. After the Galaxy S4 logo, you'll see a screen that says 'SAFESTRAP: DISABLED' and there will be a little robot. TIP: To enter Safestrap, press the menu button (physical, hardware key) under 'Recovery' at that screen. To continue to Android, press the back key (again, physical) under the 'System' tab. For now, press the menu button under 'Recovery'. Now, click 'Install' which should be in red, click 'Add zips', and navigate to your Downloads folder. Now click on the NB1 modules ZIP you just downloaded. Swipe to install, and reboot. This time, hit the back key under 'System'.
All done!
Now, Android should (and will) boot up, and you'll have working WiFi! If, for some odd reason, you don't have WiFi- do NOT panic! Just search around for the MF3 modules and flash those! All is good, all is good. A lot of this guide was taken from my post about my personal method of SIM unlocking the AT&T Galaxy S4 without the dialer codes or an AT&T SIM. It was just modified a little to work for you.
Remember, hit thanks!

Those are my exact words. Also, the attached files (NB1 modules, SuperSU, Towelroot, etc.) can be found attached to my post in the link above. Have a good night, and best of luck! :good::good::good:

See the thread I started with a similar problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/help/rogers-samsung-s4-4-2-2-i337m-wifi-t3256535
Would I be able to use this fix?
Hi, I started a thread needing help with my wifi but it has developed into not even being able to boot at all; it stops at the galaxy logo and either freezes or keeps booting. I have gone to the Odin page with all the different things to do and flashed the file to get back to the original rom but that is really where the trouble began. right now the only thing I can do with my phone is get into download mode, I can't even get into recovery. I have flashed a pit file that worked the first time but I don't know if that is part of the problem or not. Can someone please give me some directions, thanks
Also the phone won't boot at all unless hooked up to a power supply, the battery alone doesn't do anything.

More info is needed. What firmware / bootloader are you on? Was it rooted? Did you have a custom recovery installed? What version of ODIN are you using?

Right now, it sounds like you might need to use enewman17's ODIN debrick file.

It is the AT&T s4. To be honest I don't know what firmware I am on, it is the one the Odin page said to use if you want to go back to stock. I never rooted it. The bootloader would be whatever the latest update was for this phone. I can't get into it to tell you anymore. I am using ODIN 10, the latest one. thanks
Well I finally got into recovery and did a factory reset, now it boots into the AT&T white splash screen before it just turns off. I am also wondering if my battery just died for some reason?

ODIN 10? Try using ODIN 3.09 and see if that helps. The latest update would be Android 4.4.4 NJ4 firmware. This link should help you, it will give you root with safe strap recovery though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/guide-odin-to-stock-updating-rooting-t2926642

Check out the link I posted in my last post. It should help you get your phone fixed.
I have been there. I went to the very last option which seems to be what I need unless I am missing something.
Neither odin 3.09 or 3.10 will even flash any file now. it either says invalid md5 or fails when it attempts it.
Well, I finally got it to boot into android but it is flaky at best. It is android 4.3 instead of 4.4 where it was initially. The wifi still doesn't work and now the keyboard keeps crashing everytime I do something. The build is jss15j1337ucuemk2 which I know is older than I had before. Does this give anyone a better idea of what I need to do? If I can get a stable flash then can I flash a modem file to fix the wifi? I really need some direction, thanks
Turns out the battery was completely drained which was causing some of the boot problems, I don't now how that happened but I am charging it now.
Well after using odin 3.8* I got it to install some older firmware ending in mk2 rather than the nc1 or nf4 that I had before the trouble. After I got it to boot, I went back into download mode and flashed the modem file and now everything works execpt I had to force stop Samsung keyboard and use swype. I would like to upgrade my firmware but since for a couple of more weeks it won't have a sim card I can't upgrade OTA. For some reason Kies says that firmware upgrade and initialization isn't supported with this model which makes no sense to me. It also says my firmware is up to date
Does anyone know how to flash to the latest firmware without me going through this nightmare again? thanks

If I were in your shoes I'd flash the nb1 tar file in Odin, any vein should work. See this for the tar file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56453100. You can then ota to the latest firmware which is 4.4.4, nj4

I haven't found anything from Samsung to download. If I flash a newer build, do I also need to flash a modem file and a bootloader or can I just flash the PDA? thanks for explaining this to me.
And can I do a dirty flash so I don't have to lose everything again?
well, now I see that there is no sound. so I guess I will have to flash again.

There's. Something I'm yet to understand. Did you finally manage to boot into recovery? If so, flash a custom recovery (I recommend philz touch recovery) then use it to make complete wipe.
Then boot into download mode and flash latest pda firmware in the compressed file you downloaded. Ps: make sure it's from your region.
May be if you provided me with your region I'd get you all the files required

I just got this GT-i9505 Galaxy S4 and it's openline but the signal bar has a letter "R" above it which I assume to be roaming. I'm having some thoughts on flasing custom ROMS and I was wondering if that would affect my current network status? I'm worried that if I flash a new custom ROM, the phone will be locked on the carrier (Globe). Not rooted yet and I was wondering if you could help me out here
No, it won't affect your network status nor be locked on your carrier. :good:

If the phone was neverlocked then flashing won't change anything.
But if the phone was locked and then unlocked at some point, it might lock it back.
It depends on the unlock type used. Some unlocks are permanent.
But if you bought it unlocked from the store/carrier, then there is nothing to worry about.

Rooting can be done without the need of a custom recovery.
Did you un-tick re-partition in Odin before trying to flash?

the unit is from Globe and I have this annoying globe bootlogo at startup
UPDATE: Got to flash the custom recovery and use a custom rom Lollirom V9.0 the problem was the sync cable not sending enough current to the phone which causes the issues with the odin.
For those who have the same carrier and baseband, you can safely flash a custom recovery (CWM) and flash a custom ROM. It will be fine, networks still there even after I updated the modem to PA1. Goodluck

I have a AT&T Samsung S4 that I would like to give to my daughter. Unfortunately, the S4 is out of whack. First, I keep receiving the message "The device has detected an application attempting to perform actions that are not permitted. These actions have been blocked. It is recommended that you restart your device." Second, Wi-Fi will not turn on. When I try to activate Wi-Fi from the pull down screen, it blinks green and then goes back to gray. Third, I cannot delete any of Knox apps. There is no option that allows me to delete the Know apps, just the option to force stop. Considering that I don't have cellular service (because the purpose of the S4 is just to use on Wi-Fi and download apps for my daughter), I can't really download apps without Wi-Fi.
Is there any way I can get my S4 to function properly again, such as reinstalling software? I'm not tech savvy, so I apologize. A lot of the threads I've come across only address one of the issues. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
The wi-fi chip could be defective. I also have an i337 sitting in my desk that has no wifi.
You cannot delete knox apps without root.
Did you try a factory reset?

Yes, I did a factory reset. Is there a way to root the device without WiFi access? Given that I can't access WiFi, I can't access the Play store to download the apps I need to root.

You can root the device. But you need to be in stable condition first, like working everything fine and no system message popping up.
Could you tell me your android version, baseband, bootloader etc.. so that I can tell you the directions you need to take.
Look at this thread to get back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221

Android Version = 4.3
Baseband = I337UCUFNC1
Build No. = JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2
Kernel Version = 3.40-1921628
Secure Boot Status = Samsung
I hope this is helpful and thank you for your time and assistance with this matter.
You could try smartswitch or Kies to perform a factory restore. If that doesn't work, this thread may help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221

It appears that your are on Jellybean 4.3 OS with Kit-kat NC1 modem.
You have several choices.
Like audit13 said you try smartswitch or Kies to perform a factory restore .
If that is not solved your problem you can flash the firmware via odin.
If you are not familiar with using odin this guide explain about the odin.
In that guide you will find the sections about how to get back to MK2 stock and links for the necessary files.
Once you were back on the MK2 stock see whether your wifi is working. If you want to stay on MK2 and root the phone you can use saferoot to root the phone. Here is the link for root.
You could also upgrade your android OS to NC1 Kitkat too. Then you could use Towel root to root the phone.
Thanks for all your help. Unfortunately, I tried the Odin method and during the process i received the Failed message in Odin. I suppose I'm SOL.

Here's the screenshot of the failed message.
If you download roms from sammobile.com, only unzip the file once and flash in ap.
Since it is stopping at the aboot.mbn file, either the rom you are flashing has an outdated bootloader or the rom is not for your phone.

Yes, ROMs from sammobile are flashed using Odin. Unzip the file once to yield a tar.md5 file. Then, this file is flashed in ap.

What loading screen is it stuck at?
Maybe take it to a cell repair shop to see how much it would cost to force flash the firmware via jtag cable.
