I have Galaxy S4 i9505. I downloaded latest MEA firmware from sammobile I wanna update via odin. WHen I get into download mode. It says Write Protection : Enable. Will this effect from flashing via odin? Is it safe to flash? I have not rooted my phone, original stock rom doesn't give me the latest update of firmware. So I would like to update it myself. Even kies doesn't have it.
Please assist me. Thank you all.
I really don't want an expensive brick.
Yep just flash newest firmware whit odin

I tried flashing CWM recovery instead. it says success but I still do not get CWM recovery. What did I do wrong?

I have a "GT-I9505". I was able to Odin TWRP. My objective is actually to turn it into an SGH-I337M, a bootloader unlocked version of SGH-I337, which is locked. All 3 are S4 variants. The mainboard of my SGH-I337M recently died. Since I couldn't find a replacement I337M board anywhere, and my research shows the mainboard of these 2 variants are interchangeable, hardware-wise, I bought an I9505 mainboard and dropped it in. An I9505 certainly comes with I9505's bootloader and baseband. Since I live in the U.S., I'd like to replace at least the baseband to North America, ie. my original I337M baseband. However, when I tried to Odin either the entire I337M stock ROM or just the baseband alone, it kept failing due to (AUTH). Since I was able to Odin TWRP, does it not imply the bootloader of my I9505 is unlocked? If it is unlocked, why is it preventing the baseband or the entire ROM from being flashed? I do have this "WRITE PROTECTION: Enable" message on my download mode screen too, but you guys have determined it can be ignored. Thank you in adv for any tips.

The I9505 is bootloader unlocked and comes that way by default; it's the US that loves locking bootloaders. Regardless, you CANNOT mix and match boards and basebands, as the low-level firmware in the S4 will detect the mismatch and reject the change. I know, as I attempted it with a flashable zip on my I9505. The device refused it and would not install it. Odin will reject it as well, for the same reason.
You would have to re-program the cellular radio's low level firmware to accept North American bands. People have tried it, including myself, but most of them were unsuccessful, including me. There is a thread in the forums here explaining what to do. Read it, and good luck.

Hello. I have been searching for hours like a mad man on Google for a solution to my problem, but i'm having no luck. Excuse the nooby nature of this post please. So I rooted my Galaxy S4 and I am trying to get it back to stock by flashing the AT&T md5 onto my phone (Galaxy S4 SGH-I337) through ODIN and it fails every single time. Initially, with ODIN 3.07, it would return something like fail (auth). Then I tried with ODIN 1.85, but that version returns "Complete(Write) operation failed." In addition, I attempted Kies but it too failed (no specific error code), and now the phone wont boot. It says that the firmware upgrade encountered an issue. I am not able to access stock recovery or TWRP because it will automatically go to Download Mode with "Could not do normal boot" in the top left corner if I in any way attempt to access it. I am using the stock cable with USB Debugging enabled. I also tried two different computers, two different cables (one being stock of course), and tried every single usb port on both computers. What went wrong? I will give you my upmost respect if you can solve this. I also am absolutely willing to supply any information you may need. Just ask. (Please don't be bricked. Please don't be bricked)
-With kind regards, Branden.
Let me guess you had the att mf3 firmware and tried retoring by flashing the MDL firmware via odin? You said md5 so I assume mdl? You might at this point still be able to fix it visiting a best buy near you if it has a samsung center. Also att store can reflash mf3.

You mention md5, which as febby assumed I'll assume to be mdl, and twrp. Do you have mdl firmware on your phone and did you have twrp installed. Assuming you had twrp you were probably on mdl firmware. If so, I would re-download the firmware and try again. It would help if you could explain where Odin is failing too.

I never actually got TWRP working. I flashed it through Goo Manger and I was never able access it (It went to download mode with "Could not do normal boot" in the corner). Does this change the type of firmware I was on? In both cases of ODIN, the newer version (3.07) fails immediately after you start the process at around NAND Write start. It returns Fail (auth). In the older version (1.8.5), it reports that the write operation failed. I attached screenshots of both cases.
If you never got twrp to work then I'm almost positive you have mf3 firmware. You're best bet is best buy and have them re-flash the firmware.

There is no way to fix your problem currently so like jd1639 said, take it to best buy to the Samsung Experience area and tell them Samsung Kies firmware update fail and it did this to your phone. Thats what I did yesterday, they flashed it and I have my phone working again.

Hi,
Currently there is not much on the phone, at least nothing to start up. I had CM, but had to go back so I tried the guide posted on this forum. With little success. So now im not sure where I stand as the phone is in a state without a ROM. When I try to start up normally i get "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
Anyone can help me with installing fresh stock Samsung ROM?
Thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
Tho_kva2
Which was your last stock rom bevor you installed cm?
And which stock rom did you try to flash after cm?
Did they had the same product key?
Was the flashing process successful or did odin say "fail"?
And how is your current knox status? 0x1?
Send from my Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk
Not sure, but my phone was up to date with the latest update from Samsung.
I first tried to use "Norway (telenor)" first as, and when that failed I tried "Norway 4.4.2" Both found in the second post of the Guide.
Product key?
Odin said Fail. I tried multiple times with different odin versions and with PIT file.
Is it the "Knox warranty void" is so 0x1
And the latest original firmware running on your phone was it a Norway (telenor) firmware?
With product key i meant the csc.
The old firmware and the one you want to flash now have to have the same csc, i guess.
You can also flash a custom recovery and try to wipe and then flash again.
Send from my Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk
I'm not sure what the original firmware was, but it was the stock firmware i got with the phone when i bought it + updates.
CSC is TEN (Norway)
I do not know how to do a custom recovery, im a total noob on this subject of flashing and modding phones. Got any kind of guide or directrions to point me in? Sorry for not knowing squat, but hope you or someone else here can help me!
Hi,
okay, before you flash a recovery, you can try to flash another firmware but it have to be android 4.4.2 norway TEN
Did you also follow this note here?
"Odin troubleshooting:*If Odin accidentally gives you "fail" try the following:
- Repeat procedure.
- Make sure that all actions of Kies are disabled from task manager.
- Change usb port.
- Try another usb cable (make sure it is the original).
- Try another Odin version.
- Uninstall and re-install driver.
- Use pit file.
- Try another computer."
When odin will continue failing then try this.
http://www.usp-forum.de/downloads.php?do=file&id=1531
This is a 4 part open Europe firmware. Try to flash it...First time without pit, when odin failed try with pit...
If nothing helped, then you can install a custom recovery.
You once installed a recovery, before you flashed CM, remember?
But I will look for a guide and the right files.
Send from my Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk
It worked with the European version! Cheers mate Oh, it was without the pit.
Atleast android is installed hehe. but keyboard keeps crashing so cant type anything, and I cant turn on wifi; I get "Security notice, your device's security has blocked an action that is not permitted. No further action is required" -Knox Notification Manager.?
Oh and I got no SIM card to try at the phone atm. will get it later
So waht should be the next step?
Did you rooted this firmware already?
Try to fullwipe again. I thought this message only pops up, when the devise is rooted and Knox still not deleted... mysterious

I did not root it. I will try to wipe
Edit:
****ed up. Tried flashing the same again, and it failed lol.. so now im back to where I was before the phone "worked" again.
So I think I should get a recovery. Any thought?
Lol that's crazy. Also tried 4 part with pit?
And when you flash a Norway firmware again? Maybe it will work now, i don't know what's going on there

This is CWM recovery for i9505, you have to flash the .tar file with odin in PDA or AP. It's your choice, whether you install the touch or non touch version.

Bought what I thought was a UK S4 & have been trying to root & load CM, looked a bit more carefully & found it was an AT&T model with i9505 software?
Anyway, after trying many things, I'm going to send it back but I want to wipe the phone first.
This is where the trouble starts as if when it boots into recovery it comes up with the 'System software not auth by AT&T found on phone' .
I've been trying different PIT's to see if that would work (it hasn't) and am trying various ROM's to put it all back to stock so I can wipe it.
I've tried I337UCUAMDL_I337ATTAMDL_I337UCUAMDL_HOME.tar.md5 but that came up with an Odin fail & 'sw rev check fail:fused 5, binary:1' on the device?
Am currently downloading a couple of different ROM's but I'm stumbling in the dark - can you help?
Info wise:
FIRMWARE
AP (PDA) i9505xxufnb7
cp i9505xxufnb7

PDA Version i9505XXUFNB7
CSC Version i337ATTFNB1
Andriod version 4.4.2
Root Existance - yes
Build number KOT49H.I9505XXUFNB&
Any other info needed?
Please help!
Cheers
Only time I've heard att non authentic software is cuz the kernel is not stock try flashing stock kernel or redownloading the stock tar and flash in odin again
It is quite common to load I9505 based system firmware onto the I337. The kernel will be an I337 kernel though.
Your boot loader is NB1 so earlier versions of the firmware cannot be flashed. You should return to stock NB1, and that will be sufficient for your purpose, although it is not the latest firmware. See this thread if you haven't already found it.
Thanks guys - that was the thread I've been looking for in the millions here creepyncrawly!
I'd managed to get one of these
AP_I337UCUEMK2_1921628_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
onto the device & booting but it didn't allow me to turn on wifi so I'll get the
ALL_ATT_I337UCUFNB1_I337ATTFNB1_505595_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.rar
and give it a go.
One last question (Assuming that this final bit of software works, what would I need to flash to get rid of the AT&T splash loading screen on bootup? Can that even be done?
Many thanks again chaps!

It a bit more complex to mod that. I'm not familiar with the specifics on the S4 but on the S2 you had to modify the param.lfs file.
I've got a strange S4 on my hands. Its stock 4.4.2 was reporting it as i9505, international S4 LTE version.
However the download mode is reporting it as SPH-L720. Nvm, just a little hiccup I thought, let's go ahead.
I managed to get it to root and install TWRP 3.0.1.0 S4 LTE version. However after this it started throwing the Recovery is not SELinux enforcing error. It was still booting fine however. Could enter both S4 Stock rom and TWRP.
I wiped its data, cache, dalvik, and system, formatted to F2FS. So far so good. Installed AOSP 6 by JD Team, installed stock GApps. Booted straight into
Great. Everything's working perfect. Now I inserted my sim and whoop-de-doo. Sim shows up in home menu, but no antenna activity.
That's strange, why isn't it working? I thought the modem firmware was out of date or incompatible with Android M. Decided to find the latest FW matching my modem description and flash it.
Except, this is what showed up in the data I'd taken care to gather before beginning anything:
Model Number: GT-I9505
Baseband version: I9505OLBFNB4
Build Number: KOT49H.V1
AP: I9505XXUBFNB7
CP: I9505OLBFNB4
CSC: I9505DXUFNB3
Found a firmware I thought matched and flashed it. Rebooted, and suddenly phone won't boot at all.
Can't find a firmware now. PIT's gone. Phone is showing "SECURE FAIL: KERNEL" and "System software not authorized b Samsung has been found on your phone" on normal power on where it refuses to boot at all. Can't access TWRP either.
I can still go into Download mode and Odin can still access the phone.
I'm completely lost with how to proceed with this now however. Phone model numbers do not match anything, PIT gone, TWRP gone, serial numbers do not match anything, Kies refuses to initialize the phone, etc etc.
Any help would be welcome. I had opened over 50 tabs before I suddenly lost heart and closed all of them and took to writing this post. Thanks for reading.
EDIT: Further checking the IMEI shows the phone is actually a i9500 according to SNDeep.com. This just keeps getting worse.
if you bought this from a second hand from a phone shop it's state is down them not having a clue what they are doing and flashing firmware onto it. pretty much everyone here has the not enforcing SEandroid on recovery and kernel it's nothing to worry about.
AOSP 6.0.1 is almost a unified rom so it works with all but a few variants of s4, the problem is whatever you tried to flash after that, you didn't mention what that was. but it's kinda beside the point now.
when you enter download mode whatever model it mentions there is the firmware want to download and flash via odin.

I flashed a MDCModemOnly version of the CP firmware. Since the phone said its a SPH-L720, I thought the latest unlocked European rom would fix the antenna problems.

The SPH-L720 is a Sprint S4. So you'll have to flash that firmware. I believe sprint is a US carrier only, is that right?
So it's a CDMA (or CMDA?) device I guess. That means it uses different frequencies to connect to the network. I'm not really sure what I saying, lol. I just know that GSM and CDMA are a bit different when it comes to network connectivity.

Sprint, as far as I know, don't lock the bootloaders. Only AT&T and Verizon do.
Here you have the CF Auto root thread for the SPH-L720 if you still are concerned.
Is there any place to download the firmware aside from sammobile.com? They're demanding I pay them to download a firmware at more than 15kb/s!

You could try SamFirm. It's a tool for downloading Samsung firmwares, but it requires some info about the phone and, since you can't boot up, it will be hard to get.

Wow, thanks, that worked like a charm! Already had pulled my PDA, CP and CSC, knew the region and Downloading mode reported SPH-L720.
Currently downloading at 400kB/s.
Voila! Works. Stock SGS4 5 installed, only Knox Warranty set to 0x1, everything else's fine.
I've already rooted the phone with cf-auto-root and Odin, installed TWRP Manager, now what?
TWRP manager is asking me to install Busybox, should I do that? I'm attempting to install TWRP recovery and flash JDCTeam's AOSP 6.

TWRP can be flashed with Odin or with an app called Flashify.
I recommend the Odin method.
But if you want to install it with TWRP manager, there is no harm in that. But you do need to install busybox. Just follow the app's prompts.
Followed your advice, installed TWRP 2.8.4 via Odin, upgraded it via TWRP to 3.0.1.0.
Following this I've tried installing JDCTeam's AOSP 6.0.1 again. However, my cellular network has been deactivated. AGAIN.
Now what?
EDIT: My baseband is reporting L720VPUGOK3 according to the current ROM.

Is that the most recent?
It could be caused by the fact that the phone was repaired with mismatched parts.
Or kernel related. They have a stock aosp kernel that you can flash. Try with that.

Flash it via ODIN's AP command?
EDIT: Yes, I believe so. It is the one that was returned as most recent by both Sammobile and Samtool, as well as according to official samsung releases.
EDIT 2: Flashed it via TWRP, no difference. Still no network.
I don't get it, this is odd. The team lists L720 as supported, and my phone is unlocked, after all I can use the default SGS4 stock ROM with my SIM and network, so why isn't it working on this?

You can try and update the modem and bootloader even further, manually, via Odin.
There is a dedicated thread in the general section.
I don't think it will work, but it may be worth a try.
If I look further...
Phone Model = GT-I9505
Bootloader = SPH-L720
IMEI = a GT-I9500 phone
I think it's a GT-I9505 phone with SPH-L720 motherboard and IMEI that tampered from a GT-I9500 phone. Really, I would bring back this phone to the seller.

Exactly. Things are really weird with this. But returning this isn't an option. Phone belongs to a friend and he's been using it a while. Can't take this back now.
Also restoring to stock wiped out the international unlock. Phone is showing Sprint in top left corner.
Right now the phone is 101% stock 5.0.1. If anyone can please help guide me through unlock this permanently for all future foreseeable ROMs and flashes, please.
Managed to unlock it via the S4 Unlocker, following the instructions in that thread.
Still can't get 4G LTE to run on it like it was before, but can confirm 3G HSPA+ mode is working fine on it.

If the phone was neverlocked then flashing won't change anything.
But if the phone was locked and then unlocked at some point, it might lock it back.
It depends on the unlock type used. Some unlocks are permanent.
But if you bought it unlocked from the store/carrier, then there is nothing to worry about.

No, it won't affect your network status nor be locked on your carrier. :good:

the unit is from Globe and I have this annoying globe bootlogo at startup
UPDATE: Got to flash the custom recovery and use a custom rom Lollirom V9.0 the problem was the sync cable not sending enough current to the phone which causes the issues with the odin.
For those who have the same carrier and baseband, you can safely flash a custom recovery (CWM) and flash a custom ROM. It will be fine, networks still there even after I updated the modem to PA1. Goodluck
