Im using galaxy nexus but yet the idea of getting this nexus 4 won't go out of my head.
What i like about new nexus? hmmm.. New design perhaps but then again casing will take it away. Better camera? Not that big of deal.. I rarely take pictures with my phone. Faster processor? Don't play games and i mostly close every app after using 'em. IPS display? Nahh i do watch some YouTube clips and i kinda prefer amoled for this sort of things. They say it has faster mobile module some report speeds up to LTE But im personally fine with gnex 7Mbps on tmobile.
Damn it, Not a single excuse to get one.. I guess GNex pretty advanced or n4 pretty much not that advanced.

I have a friend with a Galaxy Nexus. The first thing i noticed is that his screen is blue. It has a blue shade on it. I think it has one of the worst Amoled screens if i'm not mistaken? Second thing i noticed Nexus 4 battery life > Galaxy nexus. This is a factor i've really noticed. Most of the time i see him having to recharge after only 2 hours 15 minutes of screen on time if lucky a bit more.
The galaxy nexus is sure a fast device still IMO. It's fast, but you'll definitely see that the nexus 4 is much snappier when compared. It's not a must upgrade, but it does pay off imo. I don't see my upgrading any time soon. Then again, it depends on your location. Where i'm from this device costed me 400 euros. = 522$
If you're from the U.S or germany and have play store, you'll be getting it for 300 euros or 300 dollars? Either way, both way cheaper than the 400 euros i had to pay for the 16gb variant.
All up to you in the long run.
N4 >Gnex. Enough said.
Don't upgrade. Unless you have plenty of money to spare it's just not gonna be worth it, the upgrade in every day life usage is going to be very, very minimal. IMHO you should wait for another "generation" of the phone, which is probably happening in less than a year.
I have one, and it's a great device, but I upgraded from an HTC Desire (which is a three year old device) so it was a "woah" kind of upgrade, justifiable to some extent. But I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have upgraded if I had a GNex. Minimal, incremental changes? Ain't nobody got money fo' that.
Yeah.. Well i still got time to decide. Prices are okay i can either get it from play store or Craigslist got tons of ads for unopened $350 to $400 same as what you going to pay to Google with all taxes and shipping.

I doubt the galaxy s 4 is going to be a woah upgrade. Honestly i feel android has becoming so advance to the point where i believe the only thing that would give me a "WOW" factor is seeing the battery life double or even better triple. Sure, android will continue to improve, but the only thing lacking nowadays is battery life. And i have the feeling with the 1080 p screens coming that the devices won't really improve battery life by much if at all. Time will tell. I came from my One x to this phone, let me tell you, there was a WOW factor there and my one x>>>>>>>>galaxy nexus - in term of battery. Fluidity as well on a custom rom.
Buy it. I had a pretty good phone already myself(Atrix HD, Snapdragon S4, JB) but couldn't resist buying the N4. There's nothing like buying a new phone, you spend your spare time customizing it and reading about it, you pull it out of your pocket constantly just to look at it.
It's freaking Magic.
I can't get over how beautiful this thing is. You should do something nice for yourself, buy this phone. You deserve it.
I sold my gal nex for almost 300 so the upgrade was almost free. You know its better just get it. And I still prefer amoled over this.

I would do the upgrade. I came from a galaxy nexus. It was a nice device no doubt but with android 4.2 I noticed some lag using the camera on the gnex. It was very annoying. Also the screen colors were ok. But that phone is getting old and idk how much longer Google will support the latest updates since the hardware is not that great IMO. The nexus 4 feels much faster when opening the camera and other apps. Also when opening the app drawer, I like how you get the extra row of icons. Also the better hardware, camera, design, screen and the latest Google updates for a year or so is a win win IMO. Plus I sold my gnex for 260 on eBay. So it helped pay for my nexus 4 through T-Mobile.

Same for me. It was about $70 of new money so easily a no brainer. Great phone, no regrets.
That's real nice!
i'd like to hear more from people who actually switched from Gnex to N4. People who switched from other phones to N4 surely noticed the difference but i'm switching from almost identical phone.

It is not almost identical at all. I never owned a Gnex, but I have used them, and the N4 is an all-around better device.
Went from Gnex to Note 2 to N4. In my opinion, the N4 is a much better phone than the other two. Battery life, screen, snappiness...the N4 is head and shoulders above the Gnex. Taking into consideration that you can sell your Gnex and upgrade for around $100, it is a no brainer in my eyes.
yeah! How much should i sell my gnex then?>
I put mine on craigslist for $265 and had 3 people fighting over it an hour later. Had cash in hand 30 minutes after that. That's the same amount of money i had into it. It was in good condition, but not as nice as yours.
ok i ordered N4 and posted my gnex on craigslist meanwhile i'll be using my backup iPhone 4
Received 16gb N4. So far feels much faster and smoother than GNex. The screen noticeably feels and looks bigger. Colors are more natural than before. I like it even though everything looks the same as before(in terms of software)
Btw decided to go naked this time.. just can't resist n4's sexy design
Ohh yeah gnex been sold for $280 on Craigslist.
Don't forget to take into consideration that the Nexus 4 does not have OTG support, but Galaxy Nexus does.

Not a deal breaker... 16gb is more than enough for my needs.
I am an Atrix owner and always loved the xda support of my device, that was the reason for not moving to another one for so long.
Now it has start to pissing me off so i was thinking of buying a nexus phone, i like nexus 4 but i waited for 5. Now 5 is out.
Today i found one nexus 4 in new conditon witch is on sale for just the half price from the nexus 5 32gb (incl shipping).
Does it worth buying a nexus 4 ?
I mean that the community may start to fade out since 5's arrival, and i am asking all of you nexus users to tell me if you are fine with nexus 4 hardware or if you thing that 4 has become old.
Whould you suggest me coming on nexus 4 or going for 5 ? (note the price difference)
Thanks for your time at least for reading that
I'm keeping my N4 until the end of its days!
I still think its worth to buy a nexus4 ( i bought mine 3 months ago ) especially if you can get it for a good price... With 4.4 coming soon development for the device will continue

To be honest i am mostly considering two things: usb OTG and secondly camera.
I think 16 gigas isn't a plenty of storage, sdcard is missing, so a flash drive would be fantastic for some occassions (or a 32 model)
Definitely not, you don't have to get the 32gb Nexus 5 you can get the 16gb, which lowers the price down. The Nexus 5 is better in just about every way, faster cpu, better camera, better and larger screen. Most importantly the battery on the Nexus 4 is not that great compared to other phones even if the Nexus 5 is still not where it needs to be it's battery life is much better than the 4. Trying to save a few dollars is not worth receiving this subpar experience.
Subpar experience? What kind of B.S. is that? It's a goddamn phone, and still a very fast one at that.
It totally depends upon kind of deal you are getting on nexus 4!!

Nexus 5 has usb otg nexus 4 doesn't. Nexus 5's camera is actually pretty good, Nexus 4 isn't.
I feel a need to point out that Nexus 4 technically does have OTG support, it just requires an external power source to work. This is due to the fact that LG for some reason decided to put the cellular radio on an internal USB port which uses up most of the juice so that the Nexus 4 can't power external devices.
I am guessing you can pick up a mint Nexus 4 for about half the price of a new Nexus 5. Is the 5 twice the phone of the 4... hardly.
I ordered a 5 on day one, but cancelled it after reading the reviews. Yeah, the camera is better, but I didn't really have any complaints about the Nexus 4 camera (I know how to take good photos with it). The 1080p screen makes no sense on a display that size and we'll see how battery life compares after the Nexus 4 gets 4.4. I am guessing it'll be a push.
The N5 is also faster but I don't ever recall waiting on my N4 for anything other than downloads, and since I am not in an LTE market, that's a push as well. So for me, silly to toss the Nexus 4 out just because there is a newer one, especially when it doesn't really offer me anything earth shaking. I actually prefer the look and feel of the N4 and I'll happily wait for the next Nexus.

This can only means the Nexus 5 is better for you. It has better camera, USB OTG support, and the 32gb model, but it will cost twice as much compared to a used Nexus 4 as well. In term of performance, the Nexus 4 is very smooth, especially with ART enabled, so I do not intend to upgrade now.
I played with N5 for a few days.
1. Its pretty much the same size
2. Dont see much difference between 1080p and 720p
3. Battery gives only extra 0.5 hours of screen time
4. Dont see much difference in camera
5. Worse radio (get worse signal)
My N4 is on Liquidsmooth 2.9 4.2.2 with Matrix kernel. It never lags. On 4.4 it should be even better. Is N5 a better phone? Yes, it is. I absolutely love the look and feel of it. But is it worth extra $400? If you sell your N4 for $200 and spend another $200 on upgrade, then yes. But if the money is an issue or you are not a phone junkie, I dont see enough reasons to upgrade. Its like iphone 5 and 5s. Better? Yes. Worth the extra $$$? Not really
Well, I just finished flashing 4.4 on my N4 about an hour ago, and I must say that it is a lot snappier with it. So, if you plan on getting a Nexus 4, with 4.4 it's as good as it's going to get. Granted, I have not run long-term tests yet, but I don't think i'll be disappointed by the new version.
i am 100% sure that nexus 4 will survive for another year or two..

Can you expand on this, and how is the wifi signal? Coming from GSM Samsung devices that I used to get great signals, I'm already not impressed with the low signal strength of the N4, so I really don't want to get anything worse than it. The WiFi signal strength is not that great either.
Get the nexus 4, its still a solid phone and development will definitely continue with kitkat..:good:

Aka mostly useless for its intended purpose. I can't believe people are actually recommending this guy old technology. If it was a question of whether he should upgrade or not it would be one thing. But making a new purchase it's silly to tell him to get the older product. The tech world moves very quickly.
Dude if you haven't already decided get the Nexus 5 it overshadows the 4 in every way and you'll be able to do things that the 4 can't do (decent camera, lte, and usb otg). Sadly most people in this topic are giving reasons why they're personally not upgrading instead of giving valid advice to a new purchaser.

Interesting vision. "Old technology" you say? We're talking about N4 vs N5 here. N5 is definitely better in most regards, but N4 isn't far behind. You may call nexus S old technology, but I hardly agree with saying the same about the N4.
Is the N5's (questionable) extras worth the double price compared to a still very capable device? That's up to him, based on his needs and values.
just as the thread says how long are you guys going to keep nexus 4 as your primary phone ?? ^.^
For as long as it provides my needs. If it lasts physically then I think I'll keep it for another 2 or 3 more years .
It does whatever I need and I think it will continue to do so for a year or more, I see no point in upgrading it. I just browse the net, tapatalk, occasional games(which I can run with no problems, the specs are still above average). The camera and battery are the only problems imo. We'll see what the next Nexus will bring
I think i'll use it for a while.
I'm expecting for it to get the android L update and since 2Gb ram is enough for me, ill use it till it stops getting official OS updates and when 2Gb ram isn't going to be enough
Until it breaks I think, because I don't want larger phones, and I'm not willing leave nexus program.
I'm a Brazilian without English Course, sorry and be comprehensive
I was due an upgrade in August and got a great deal including a HTC ONE M8, only problem, I really can't take to the phone. Spec wise its fantastic and I have tried to grow to like it, but there's so many things it doesn't do that my Nexus does, that i have put it back in the box and will sell it when i am allowed to after 6 months.
I will never make that mistake again, Nexus all the way from now on!

In December my sister bring my One+ 1 so my N4 will be the one and only phone.
As soon as I can afford one
until i get an one+one invite
EDIT: just got myself a 64gb invite!!!!!!!!!!
Until it breaks.
To infinity and beyond......
I have 2 phones that I want to get:
The new Nexus. I know the 5.9" Shamu is definitely coming out, but rumors are of a 5.2" one based on the Motorola Droid Turbo for Verizon. Most likely I'll get the Shamu, because I want something BIG to play games, read ebooks, and watch videos on.
I also want to get the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. I ride a bike everywhere, so a huge phone flopping around in my cargo shorts isn't the most convenient. The Z3C gives me a good size screen in a very small package, plus a great camera and insane battery life. And being waterproof, it's a great choice for a cyclist.
Will I retire my Nexus 4 when I get those phones? No. It'll be a test mule for my Shamu and back-up device. I actually have a back-up device, my Samsung Galaxy Light, but honestly, until an AOSP ROM comes out for it, all this laggy, infuriating piece of junk is good for is providing internet at home. Waiting 30 seconds for Facebook or 15 seconds for the dialer or messaging to load makes me want to turn it into a hockey puck.
Will I still use it as a occasional daily driver after I get those phones? Maybe. Probably. Depends on the development that comes out for the Z3C. I'm sure there'll be times I want a mini version of the Shamu, but the Z3C won't have the ROM or features I want, and I'll use the Nexus 4.
The Nexus 4 is a great phone, and despite being 2 years old, there's a lot of life still left in this old girl.
Til later this year or maybe early next year. I'm waiting to see what the N6 is like. I'm just hoping it doesn't have a 5.9" screen like some rumours are saying.
They were fetching £135 on eBay last time i checked so that's saying something!

If this phone receives android L, I'll keep it for a long time.
Apart from camera I dont see any major spec upgrade in this year's phone. So I will wait for atleast next year this time and hopefully something tempting shows up.

Probably for at least 10 - 12 months. Doesn't make sense upgrading since the specs are still pretty good for the phone. It currently meets all my requirements. I think the most important thing to decide on an upgrade is whether the current phone,CPU,memory can keep up with the apps you use without slowing down.
This poll is to determine and estimate how much the new nexus (2016) is anticipated in nexus 6 community.
Used to be YES! But not if the front speakers are gone. Sticking with n6.... Looking at ZTE axon 7 as bootloader is unlocked and twrp plus good hw and cheaper price, good speakers seems worth a better look.

I see moving to a 5.5" screen as a downgrade.
After spending the price of two laptops on my N6 (£549) I expect it to last more than a couple of years. I like new toys, but there's a limit imposed by common sense. Newer processors may give an infinitesimal improvement in performance, which no doubt can be measured by benchmarks, but the N6 is plenty fast enough for me. The screen may not be the best around these days, but every time I watch a video I think "Wow, this is an amazing quality picture", so again, good enough for me.
No point in squandering resources, is there...?
("I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

I'll stay with Nexus 6, it's the best phone I ever had, even if it's not my daily phone because it's too big, it's really wonderfull with big screen, nice resolution (ready for carboards), enought RAM, 25Go is enought for me, nice photos/videos, good stereo sound with front speakers, fast charge... :good: I still love it
The Nexus Marlin and Sailfish will indeed not be true Nexus devices. It has been announced that Google is rebranding the Nexus brand, rumored at the moment to just be called "G"; and it will not feature a stock version of android, rather there will be G-only features built into the ROM. No word of bootloader yet.

If there is no Nexus device then maybe I will get the One Plus 3

Me too, not going to happen as long as there are decent 6" or bigger phones available. It's a pain trying to type messages or emails on such a small screen.
I really want a 64 bit mobile to develop my rom, but the 6P might break if I think about it too hard. So I'll check the new ones, but if they are too expensive here in Europe, and the early reviews are negative, then I'll just keep my N6.
I still love my N6 but I cracked the screen a bit in the corner.
I also want to finally make the move to Project Fi so I'm hoping for a bundle deal.
If what is in the leaks is true. I rather buy note 7. Back design too ugly for me.
There are a lot of reasons why people buy a Nexus device. The 2 most common reasons I always see is either the simplicity of the device (dare I say, bare bones of what a phone should do/have) and stock skin of Android or on the other side, the complex and customisable options that is possible with the fact that Nexus devices are easy to tinker with combined with the support of the developer community who are constantly providing support for devices for years even after they reach their sell by date(shoutout to all the devs btw )
Combined with this I guess its safe to stay for the most advanced users and beginners alike it all depends on if they're specific needs are still being met for them to stay with Nexus 6 or any other device for that matter and if not then it's time to upgrade.
Personally I will probably stick with Nexus 6 for as long as it lasts me or if a phone gets released with everything the Nexus 6 is and hopefully more ( Preferably a phone such as the Xperia Z5 Ultra , if Sony ever release it )
The price is too high for me. No front facing speakers, "just" a 5.5 Inch screen etc etc. For the moment my N6 is fast and stable enough to use it for the best part of the next year as well.
Bottom line, I would rather buy a OnePlus 3, than a "New Nexus" at this point.
Did they unviel it yet? I have my credit card ready. But i love my n6 to much lol

I've grown to the size of my phone and cant seem myself owning anything smaller.
Since first buying the Nexus 6 a couple years ago or so I've had a Moto X Pure, Huawei Mate 7, OnePlus 3, and now I'm back to the Nexus 6. This phone just has everything I want in a phone. 6 inch screen (which for me is the perfect size), simple, clean design, great development, stereo speakers, and good battery life. No point in updating to a newer phone for minimal gains in speed at the cost of at least a couple of the N6's great features.
More than likely I'm going to upgrade. My N6 will be paid off in October.
I'm ready for a smaller form factor, unless they completely **** it up and the design is completely underwhelming, I will be getting one, I'm not gonna get it on launch day like the Shamu though , gonna take my sweet time waiting for reviews to make a final decision, there is a chance I will be sticking with this device for another cycle, we'll see

Me too, I wish they would make another Nexus with a screen this size! They did it once and never again! I LOVE my N6!
I'll be keeping my N6 or getting the One Plus 3 if what I have heard and read about the new devices is true. I just love my N6, has everything I've ever wanted (minus a removable SD and/or battery which I really don't miss). Got my son a OP3 and it is really nice, I really liked my OP1. OnePlus is as close to a Nexus as you can get and unlike recent Nexus they are still inexpensive.
Nexus 6
Battery on my Release Day N6 is dying. Only charges on the Turbo Charge and drains way to fast.
I can move on and the Pixel XL looks like my best option, (I'm not in love wit the Pixel) because the Moto Z Force will never have root and that's a great phone.
OR
My buddy does phone repair and has the heat gun, tools etc and I can swap batteries with another N6 I have that the screen is shattered on. But It'd be a week before I can get to his house :/
Truth is, I'm ready for a new phone. What do YOU guys think, is there one I'm missing that I can love as much as the N6, or just fix mine and hope VZW gets the Zenfone AR if it ever gets released?
I just got oneplus 3t just for the time being. Honestly, it is one of the best phone for the price. Had honor 8 briefly, but I'm not a fan of EMUI 5.0. plus honor U.S.A is pretty slow rolling out the software update.
Oneplus is pretty fast on updating their software. I mean at the end of the day, Its kinda ridiculous to spend $650 and up for a smartphone nowadays.
Oh and I still have my nexus 6 as my back up, the phone is still getting the job done for my usage.

Nexus 6 batteries are between $12 & $20 on Amazon. That's pretty cheap. I think it's worth the trouble. There's some YouTube videos on changing that battery and it doesn't look too difficult. Plus you have an extra Nexus 6 to practice on if I'm reading the OP correctly.

I still love my shamu 64GB I plan on changing my battery whenever it stops holding a charge. All rechargeable batteries have a finite number of times they can be charged before they start acting the way yours is now. Once your battery is replaced with a quality replacement you'll likely be good for a couple of years and shamu is still an awesome device in my opinion. I'm a little apprehensive about changing my own Nexus 6 battery but when the time comes I'm gonna give it a try. Let us know how it goes.
@HipKat don't go for Nexus 5x or 6p as both suffers from some hardware related bootloop issue. Just go to their respective forums and anyone can have a look at the Q&A section. Not worth the trouble as the phone is bound to randomly die at some point.
If those are your only option and you won't change carrier to get a OnePlus 3T, then I would go for one of the Pixels as they at least has good custom ROM support. If you don't care about custom ROM support then it's up to your preference.

If those are your only option and you won't change carrier to get a OnePlus 3T, then I would go for one of the Pixels as they at least has good custom ROM support. If you don't care about custom ROM support then it's up to your preference.

Believe me, custom development is a HUGE factor and I wouldn't go for an old phone.
@bigbaluka I watched a few vids and it seems decent. Like I posted, my buddy has all the tools. We work for Dish Network and he's one of the guys that does screen repair and battery replacement for iPhone and Samsung devices. (Don'tr ask me WHY Dish is doing this....)

I'm not sure I'd replace the 6 for a 6p or a 5X. I got a 5X and it was more for the size, but I can't say it overperforms the 6 plus there are the potential bootloop issues. The Pixel is OK, but you'll be paying up big time and esp if you are not really keen about it, it's a decent chunk of money to drop down. Sounds like you like your 6, I'd just try and replace the battery since it sounds like that's the only issue. It were different if it was a broken screen or something else, but battery I'd just do that.

Yeah, agreed. I did 2 things, found a different USB cable, which looks like it solved the charging problem and switched to Dark Rom which seems to have amazing battery life. I think it'll still drain faster until I get the battery switched, so I must have had a few problems going on; bad cable, deteriorating ROM and battery that doesn't hold a charge like It used to
While my N6 isn't quick as old as yours, I have definitely noticed a lag of late. Taking pictures especially.
And while it might be nowhere near the same class as the N6, I think the Moto G5 Plus might be a good replacement. Sure, the screen size is considerably smaller, it lacks dual front-facing speakers, NFC, etc. but that price! I like the design, and as the kernel source code has already been released, my hope is that the dev community will build some nice roms for this little guy.
We'll see what Motorola does with the true Moto X replacement (not the "Is it a Moto X or is it a Moto E" we are seeing). But that Moto G5 Plus price is hard to ignore.
I just think the Pixel is too expensive. They might solve all of the issues with the release of the Pixel 2, but who wants to spend $1k on a phone?
@Fvolfrine and others:
Lag when starting the camera is a feature of Android from around KitKat or so. The ram that the camera needs is made available for other use, and then the camera has to wait for it to be released.
It makes other apps faster, but the start of the camera significantly shower. You may agree or disagree with that trade-off, but as far as I know, it's the same on all recent phones. Though of course, it matters less if the phone has a lot of ram.
From what I read, the Moto G5 plus has hardware that is approximately as powerful as the N6. So the only way it can have less lag is if its rom is better optimized - and while that may be the case for the stock roms, the N6 has a large community of devs that provide greatly optimized roms.
@runekock - my lag isn't so much when starting the camera as it is when taking a picture. Even with HDR+ turned off, it takes 4-5 seconds for the picture to take. I've had this same experience on stock, and now on PureNexus, which I flashed about five days ago.

There is no lag when using a custom kernel. Try using a kernel different from stock.

Few weeks ago I wasn't able to turn on wifi any more. After factory reset and cache wipe I got it to turn on few times then it died again. I'm suspecting a hw problem. Now that Dark Rom is available for our phone, I might try my luck with that, but I'm not very optimistic.
I really liked this phone a lot. Now I have the option of getting new motherboard for 50€ or new phone (looking at iPhone 6s Plus or 7 Plus cause of that mega battery and brightness, but that price tho.. Was also looking at Pixel but I read it has too many problems + warranty outside my country).
Is Nexus 6 worth fixing (for 50€ + risk of messing something up during repair)?
For 50€ i would take the risk.
Used Nexus 6s still went for over US$100 last time I looked at ebay. If fixing one is $20, that seems a decent investment to me. My battery is about worn out so I will be doing just that soon.
If there are ever charging issues or USB cords falling out, check for lint in the USB port. My first N6 had that issue.
I started having charging issues with my 2 year old shamu a few months ago, getting a new oem charger fixed the problem for me and it's still going strong. I've got a 5x as well, but it doesn't get used much, shamu is a better device.
gonna add my own experience to the mix hoping it would be helpful to some, My N6's battery also started showing signs of a problem few month back after maybe more than a year of usage and it got worse over time. the problem is i cannot get my hand on a new battery anytime soon and i cannot use my N6 as a daily driver as it just dies randomly so i thought i go for the Galaxy S7 since the price was dropped prior to S8 launch and i did, but oh my, going from a heavily developed phone like N6 to S7 is really boring and no fun, might have just got an iphone and it would be just as dull.
so, if you gonna give up your N6 i suggest replace it with another nexus/pixel phone. but if you gonna keep it as a second phone (for whatever reason) then its up to you and your desires and needs, and ofc you cannot forget about the price tag.
