Hello XDA. I'm a new member here, thought I've been reading posts for a while before I could decide which phone to get.
I was really stuck on the 6P so here I am with my two days old Nexus and I'm loving it. (Feels like my next phone after this is going to be a Nexus, that's how awesome it feels)
The battery on the other hand is not what I expected, I don't have any battconsuming apps and it gets me through the day but I would like better battery life.
So I keep reading about flashing roms and kernel's. And I have no idea what is what. But after deciding I want PN + ElementalX (alot of people getting awesome battery with this combo I've heard) I started reading step-by-step guide how to do which gained me a bit of confidence to flash a ROM and kernel on my phone.
So I turned around, grabbed my computer, went for the USB cable and realised I don't have type-c on my PC. How do you guys do it?

The device should of come with a USB A to USB C adapter.
Mods can close down this thread, I feel really stupid.
Thanks for having me taking an extra look in the box, guess I was super excited about the phone I forgot to look for more than the phone and the charger.

Feels a little bit better now thanks
That's your guide I've been reading and tend to follow when I'm going to put pn on my phone.
Just wondering a couple of things since I'm a total Noob.
What is TCH19L? And if I want to install a ROM and kernel I need to follow all steps from 1-8?

MHC19I is the latest official build from Google. To install a ROM you need to unlock your bootloader, install TWRP recovery, and then install the ROM and kernel. Only those sections.

Steps 1, 2, 7 & 8?
Should I do an EFS Backup? Or is there no way that my EFS partition becomes corrupt?

Yes, and step #3 if you want to decrypt your device too.
There are very light chances that your EFS partition may get corrupt. For safety sake, make a backup of EFS partition, and store it on your PC.

Ok I'll go for the safe before unsafe since I barley know what I'm doing. Adb finds my device but fastboot does not. USB drivers are all up to date. May it be caused that all my USB ports is 3.0?

If that would be the situation, even ADB wouldn't detect your phone. Anyhow, fastboot commands only work in fastboot mode.

I held down power + vol down, open'd CMD as been told in the C->SDK->platform tools. And when i enter the command fastboot devices it just skips down one row. So I skipped and wrote Fastboot Flashing unlock and it says < waiting for any device >

Finally got PN & ElementalX on my 6P and loving it so far. Phone is running cooler than before is the first thing I noticed. Let's see how battery life is after a day or two of use.
Thanks to DJBhardwaj for helping me fix what was wrong and why my phone did not connect and to Heisenberg for his easy step-by-step tutorial ? ?

So, I'm trying to use this tool to root/s-off my buddy's T-bolt. It connected to the tool fine and started up. I selected option 1, and is now stuck on the "rooter" section where it mentions static across the screen. This is on my VM. The drivers have been installed, and there is no other program that would connect to the phone. Any ideas?
***EDIT***
NM. . . I am a douchebag. I'm having to "allow" the phone back through USB on my vbox for everything to move through. . .

I made it through. I'm pretty new to VM's. . . and have DEFINITELY come across a few hateful hiccups trying to set this one up. All this while I'm still attempting to get used to the Ubuntu Unity toolbar!!!
Anyways, I gained S-off, but it didn't flash CWM or SU. Revolutionary got hung up on "rebooting to fastboot once moar". I should probably give up on this vbox and run it all through Linux since I do have S-off. . .
Regardless, awesome tool!!! Thanks for the huge improvement to this community!!!
-Paul T.
Uh yeah, trying to root and do other low level sophisticated stuff to your hardware from a VM is pretty suicidal. Just use a spare xp/Win7 box.
Anyway, major props to OP for being such a badass and making this. Also downloading to add to my arsenal.
Can anyone show me the correct way of rooting my TF300T I just exchanged it so its new in the box. I did the CWM to the last one and it bricked it HARD. Im assuming it has the Jb update already on it. And in what order do I put the steps in to get ROOT, RECOVERY, SU. Just looking for a good way not to brick it again thanks in advance.:fingers-crossed:

1st off I doubt your new unit "has the Jb update already on it", as it's likely been wrapped in it's packaging longer than 4.1.1 has been available.

So wish i never brought this Sony phone going back to Samsung.
Cant update the phone cant flash custom stuff rubbish software hate it now after two weeks just trying to get the thing into flashmode. unlock boot loader nonsense. waste of money.
I have tried flash tool but it asks for the phone to be booted to flash mode. I have never been able to get the phone into flash mode. I tried putting the phone back to how it was and now it's totally bricked and about as useful as a brick.
Got to go and by a new phone anyway now.
I literally clicked 2 buttons to root and install a custom recovery...
Maybe you'll find out about flashtool months from now too
Hei man if u dont know how to use flashtool and sony stuff means do not complain against Sony. I am using it since 5 months and i am flasing custom roms and stock roms countless times.... First learn how to use flash tool and its drivers then complain...

Hi guys and thanks for the reply.
The problem is WINDOWS 8 if you have windows 8 then it's impossible to boot the phone into flash mode and believe i really tried for weeks and i really know windows.
So i found a disk with my old windows 7 evaluation on it and installed that and the phone went straight into flash mode first time and i installed firmware and phone is back. Lost my Linux though to need to reinstall that.
It's so annoying when it's a simple driver issue

Right i think that Samsung ,HTC and Sony phones are the most easy to tweak
I have added the Ouya to supported devices to my app - Infamous Performance. Now you don't need to connect to a computer to install a custom recovery. You have to be rooted already! Download app (here or Playstore Link then downolad the recovery.img from here or any other thread (i just renamed OuyaCWMrecovery6.0.3.2.img to recovery.img so the app will find it.) Place recovery on the internal SD (ouya storage) Install the app then scroll to tools. Click on flash recovery then navigate to your recovery.img. and install. It will install and reboot into recovery. Make sure you have a keyboard plugged in before it reboots or you won't be able to navigate in recovery. Last when you reboot out of recovery make sure to disable recovery install (it will ask you to.) Thanks to all the developers who have worked on this device, I always appreciate everyone's hard work. I am kind of retired so I won't be starting any projects on this device. Enjoy!

All I ask is if you enjoyed the app to please 5 star it and possible leave a comment. Thanks guys!
Looking forward to trying this, I have never completed all the tweaking necessary to customize my OUYA and make it run smoothly. I keep finding old information around the net which makes it difficult, lot of outdated stuff. Thanks!
Not supported?
Hi
The app looks great! I got it to run but when I click the recovery field it says my device is not supported.
I'm currently running stock Ouya OS chupacabra with the current update.
Any ideas on what to do next to get'er running to install CWM recovery?
Thanks
Hmm. I'll have to look at the build.prop for your model. I thought I covered them all. Can you get me a screen shot of what exactly it says? Thanks man.

Got the screen shot uploaded. It's attached and not posted in full screen on the thread.
Also, I'm using the apk on this thread and not the one from the play store.

Hey Jamison, I attached the screen shot of what I'm getting.
I installed it the app from the playstore.
If you can fix it, I'll gladly donate.

Jamison hasn't responded but just gotta be patient, Jamison's probably busy with life stuff of trying to update the app for the Ouya or other Android activity he's involved in.
Am I the only one that got it installed?
Thought I would just update this post instead of posting another. Question for anyone and please keep in mind I am fairly new to Android:
What is supposed to happen when you select 'Override Internal SD Path'?
Should it prompt you for something or does it just do it? I did quite a few searches and came up empty. I know it's probably self explanatory to many but not I. I am finally getting around to testing the functionality of this tool but probably not the best person for it given my limited knowledge at this point. It seems to be working on my Ouya.
I originally posted this becaus I was wondering if anyone has gotten this installed on an Ouya other than I. I came to the Ouya game really late, my primary reason for purchasing it was XBMC and to dive a little deeper into Android. While I have certainly not tested each function available in this tool I was able to get it installed without a problem and the cache cleaner appears to work. I am by no means skilled in the Android OS so there are lots of things I am still learning, not sure I would be able to tell if some of the functions work as I don't understand what they are supposed to do. I love to tweak/tinker, think that's probably common across most of the folks that visit the forums. Between running XBMC on the bedroom tv and having a little platform to play around with Android the Ouya was well worth the $50. I am on a Stock Ouya (rooted) and I used the apk that was attached to this thread, not the one from the Play Store. Just wish everything wasn't so out of date, I always get a little nervous about installing something that hasn't even been discussed in 8 - 12 months. This tool being an exception, thank you Jamison and hoping you continue to develop for these little boxes but fully understand why it would be hard to justify.

I have added the Ouya to supported devices to my app - Infamous Performance. Now you don't need to connect to a computer to install a custom recovery. You have to be rooted already! Download app (here 'link removed' then downolad the recovery.img from here or any other thread (i just renamed OuyaCWMrecovery6.0.3.2.img to recovery.img so the app will find it.) Place recovery on the internal SD (ouya storage) Install the app then scroll to tools. Enjoy!

I posted a comment asking about a function within the app but have since answered my own questions. I still wonder:
1). Is this wofking for anyone else on an Ouya?
2). Is it somehow 'defunct' at this point or will it be further developed?
Regardless, appreciate the effort Jamison.

I have used it on two Ouya's myself and it worked. What issue are you having? Thanks and sorry for the delay
Which other devices are supported to install recovery or kernels? I'm on htc one x.
I think I have those already. Is that the M7 or M8? I can add devices pretty easily
Doesn't install recovery nor kernels on my one x from your app
Yes. This is because I have to add support for each device. If still interested I can add it
Because "Whilst a minor amount of off-topic posting may be overlooked, the general rule is that your posts / threads must be relevant to the Forum / thread in which you are posting. ", I feel this needs it's own thread instead of this one oem-unlock-bootloader-preserving-drm, which was originally discussing DRM warranty.
I want to discuss if it is possible and how it would be done. It is not yet listed on Sony's webpage with phone and other devices which support unlock bootloader. I will try to root and unlock bootloader this weekend, I will try using the same method as for z3c.
i'm on a weekend trip and will try to root my z5c on sunday evening or monday. a smartphone without adaway, titanium backup etc. is crap.
feedback about your success would be nice.

I need some help with this one. I was able to to do oem unlock but my phone reset when I started it again.
I am also tempted to flash the recovery with ClockWorkMod for Z3C but not without a way to revert it. Anyone got any ideas for how to do that?

EDIT: I backed up the phone using adb.
Code:
adb backup -all -f c:\path\path\your_file.ab
And how to install Google USB drivers manually: http://visualgdb.com/KB/usbdebug-manual/

I don't know if you can do this in Xperias. But in Nexus devices you can boot (without flash) a recovery.
For instance:
fastboot boot Clockworkmod.img
However, I would just wait for an official custom recovery for the Z5C.

how did you get the oem code, since the device isn't listed on sony dev bootloader unlock side yet
Sony now lists the Z5 (not compact, but should apply the same way) on their unlocking

As an FYI
Sony now lists the Z5 (not compact, but should apply the same way) on their unlocking site:
"To be able to unlock your Xperia Z5, prepare it by following these steps:
1.Go into Settings > About phone and tap seven times on Build number to enable developer options.
2.From Settings, go into Developer options and enable OEM unlocking"
So it looks like this is all that´s required, no more code requesting process like on previous devices. However, nothing specific mentioned on the DRM aspect.. I have checked the option, still had "myXperia" enabled and all was good. Also, have not seen a difference in Camera quality, but would not bet on it...
but did you root your z5c?

Nope, did not root it, would not know how... would depend on a guide/software posted somewhere here on XDA... And I am not brave enough to brick my phone just yet

I have not yet done it but as soon as they release a recovey ROM, I will try all the old things in case something might work.

I just followed the guide for z3c, it accepted my IMEI. But as already stated, you can now unlock OEM for all z5 models. Here is the link: http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/. I don't know if it worked because when I started my phone again, it rested to it's original state and I had restore from a backup.

I want to try this but as you said, I need a recovery ROM first.
I'm still new to the whole Sony Xperia world, please correct me if I am wrong but would not this be the place to look for ROMs? http://developer.sonymobile.com/services/flash-tool/supported_phones/
These are just the methods to enter the flash mode
Guys help please. When I check in service menu there is ,,bootloader unlockable: NO''
I need to have root. If I use this guide ( http://unlock-bootloader.net/how-to/unlock-bootloader-sony-xperia-z5-compact/ ) it will unlock bootloader? Also, there is NO in service menu but I have code from sony to unlock from their website/email. Help?

If it says bootloader unlock allowed: NO there is absolutely nothing you can do to change it to bootloader unlock allowed:YES it's impossible. Only way is to change your z5 for another one that says bootloader unlock allowed: YES
Having a unlock code from sony won't make any difference either
Any chance for root with blocked bootloader in near future?

That is something we are all hoping for! There'll be a way to root eventually. Just needs time.

Possibly but I don't see why anybody would want to do that, because you wouldn't be able to run TWRP, flash a different kernel or anything really.

Me too... But I think the lollipop line is dead. The customization is horrible, extreme battery drain, etc. I hope, the Sony sw developers focus to the Marshmallow project.
