I finally got rid of Bt and Sky yesterday so on the plus side i now have up to 200mb download which is pleasing the children.
On the downside i can no longer connect any of my phones to my tv. I have changed all of the settings within the house so everyhthing is now on the virgin network. The tv passes all test settings and can log in to internet tv etc but if i try to find the tv on any of my phones S6 and S7 edge it simply does not appear.
It is a samsung tv not a smart tv so i cannot screen mirror but i was always able to play media from my phone to the device. Now i simply cannot find the device.
i have spoken to virgin broadband to see if it is firewalls on the new hub or anything which they have denied so i am stuck.
Please help.
Cheers
Jim

So, Dish Network Offers Remote Access to you your DVR blah blah blah.. and of course only on your Iphone... Why do they always go with the Iphone instead of just launching it with both Iphone and Android..
I already upgraded my receiver so i could use this feature on my EVO but i then read that its only out for the Iphone and soon to be released for Android... Why is this.. is there another way around this..Seriously whats with everyone going to Iphone before Android.. its not like Android is SOOOOO NEW that no one knows what it is.. its a lot better than Ihpone in my Opinion!!
Are you sure you are talking about Remote Access or Sling Player? I don't know about Remote Access, but there is an app for Sling Player. The reason I ask is you said you 'upgraded' your receiver which could imply you went with the VIP 922 with the built in Sling.
No I received the 622 I called customer service and they told me that I can still watch tv with that receiver but I need a compatible phone that being an iphone.. they said they are "working" on an android app but let's see how long that takes..

If you go to dish.sling.com/mobile.php on phone's browser and log in using your dish network credentials you can still get most of the features you are looking for in the app. I've never used the app so I'm not sure what I'm missing, but I can look at my guide, schedule dvr event and even control my 622 from my phone. Hope that helps

Just tried it, and said "account not authorized for beta" ... ???
That sucks...Not sure what I did differently but I vaguely remember there was process that I had to go thorough to activate the receiver when I first hooked up broadband to the 622 about a year ago. Try going through the main dishnetwork.com on a computer browser. Once you login click on the remote access on the left side and see if it gives you instructions on other steps that may have to be completed before you can access your receiver over the internet. If you can access it on the computer the phone should be able to as well. Other than that suggestion, I'm out of ideas. Good luck!
Hey, thanks for the feedback, I have wireless internet throughout my house.. I called Dish and told them that I cannot put an Ethernet Cable in the back of my Receiver because my Router is in the Garage and the Receiver is not near the Garage. they told me I had to Buy a Wireless USB Adapter and plug it in to the back of the Reciever..
My question is... once i hook it up to my reciever.. how am I going to be able to Connect that Adapter to my Home Network?? does the receiver have an option on the screen to set this up?
I have my 922 hooked up to my wireless via the Ethernet port on the back of the receiver to what is typically known as a wireless game adapter. You have to connect the adapter up to a computer initially to configure its SSID, key and any other necessary settings but once you are done you simply connect the receiver to the adapter with an Ethernet cable. The receiver doesn't know that it's not on a wired network and doesn't care.
you said you have a 922 did you have to buy it? or are you renting it from Dish Network?? I called and they told me i had to buy it for about $469!!!!
Every day I go to my local coffee shop. When I want to connect to the net, my Nexus shows wifi points available and I choose the appropriate one for the cafe. It doesn't need a password, but it does show a webpage where you have to agree to the terms by click the Ok button.
Is there anyway to automate this, or get around this? Its such a pain in the ass! I have Tasker if that makes any difference.
Thanks,
Jon
That is called a captive portal and no.
Or called a splash page. I worked for a hotel wifi company and we used devices called "nomadix." When you connect, the device gives you an IP, then sticks you in a pending stage until you click OK or Accept on the portal page. Until then, it won't let any IP based traffic through. Usually there's a timeout that they can modify. But being in a cafe, I highly doubt it. They're probably using a walmart bought wifi router with ddwrt firmware. I know starbucks has a splash page for their wifi.
Well, there is *sort* of a way around it, but not very convenient for cafes/etc. I am currently staying at a hotel that has said portal to access the WiFi network. What I have done is connected to said WiFi network with my laptop, then utilized "connectify" to re-transmit that authorized WiFi to me and my wife's devices. Basically turning my laptop into a wireless router. Another plus is that I can set my own WEP/WPA/etc protection to the retransmitted signal. So while this may not be a solution for cafes, etc - it certainly is a fantastic one for hotels!

I believe there are a few apps in the market which can automate this for some portals, but it's basically just scraping the page and trying to guess some information to put in, etc, so it won't work 100% of the time.
I haven't used any, so no specific suggestions, but here's a few from search:

i have this exact problem with the wifi in the pub i chef in. our broadband is provided by HEINEKEN beer. we also must connect then load browser window to accept terms.
the pub owner would also like it removed to allow people to auto-connect in the normal way because obviously when a customer steps outside for a ciggerette as it is illegal to smoke inside a public place in the uk now,. they would then need to keep re-connecting theyre phones/tablets...
ive managed to switch a total of 8 staff and about 25 customers to ditching ios for android there normaly at least 3 nexus 7's at any one time in my pub now :victory::victory: and our bar now also has nfc tags.
The app Wi-fi web login seems to be working for me.
[Q] Does the Nexus Player support "login" WiFi networks (such as those at a hotel(?
One of the biggest disappointments I had with Chromecast was that it was impossible to set the unit up in a hotel. Since many hotels have WiFi that require you to log in, you couldn't set up your Chromecast on these networks.
Is this the case with the Nexus Player?
Not really sure, but I have a trick you can try with your Chromecast. Not sure if it will work, but we used to do it back when I was in college because the University network required a username/password login (which sucked if you wanted your XBOX on the network).
Figure out the MAC address of your Chromecast. Go to your laptop or PC, and spoof the mac address of your NIC (or wifi) to match the chromecast. You can usually do this through the device manager in Windows by going to the Properties for your NIC. After that, use your brower to sign in. Go back to Chromecast and see if it worked.
Usually they tie the authentication to your NIC's MAC address...so the theory is that as long as you authenticate the mac address somehow, then any device with that mac address will work. Things might have changed over the past 6 or 7 years though when we used to do that.

Another option if you are a frequent traveler is a portable travel router like the D-Link DIR-510L. This tiny router easily fits in your briefcase yet can turn any wifi network into your own personal wifi hotspot. Basically it connects to a hotel wifi and through your phone, tablet or pc you can log in with your hotel credentials. It then creates a separate wifi network for your own use, one that you control for all your devices (including your chromecast) without having to pay the hotel more for multiple device connections, etc. It even has a built in battery to either run without power or to charge your devices and, with its 3 usb ports, can share a USB drive full of media with all your wireless devices. I know I sound like a commercial here, but I simply couldn't live without this tiny little beauty on the road.
Just a heads up as I am an ex pat I was struggling to install iplayer etc even with a smart dns setting,
I purchased a vpn from vpn unlimited they were, maybe still offering.
"OH still available for 7 days from the post date $19 3 years VPN http://goo.gl/st407o " well less of that.
I am Unrooted so No VPN possible, Well if you are desperate I installed the vpn on my PC and used a great free app
http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/
Set up a WiFi hotspot which shared the country selectable VPN. Shown above,, connected the firetv and guess what all was fine, I even measured 7mbs download speed (on pc) and video played fine on firetv
After all of that I found out my appstore was registered to the USA so that was one of the problems soon changed that in devices and settings on amazon.com, carried on and installed all the UK free apps I desired.
TV catchup is working on my PC so I am off to try the app on my firetv
The only requirement to watch out for is the black listeded ip adresses for updates may not be blocked yet, I am investigating. it should be possible as it uses open vpn as a core.
Enjoy
UPDATE Tvcatchup works fine abroad , just get the apk off aptoide
Another solution also is to setup a VPN Wifi Router in your house using a Raspberry PI.
I did that and I'm very happy.
I still need some tweaking but getting there.
Next step will be to build an iPhone application that can control it (restart, change country,...)
Let me know if you want a procedure, I can send you the one I follow. I'm also planning to do one myself with some changes.
The only thing is that you will need a VPN provider that is compatible with OpenVPN.
I got a ddwrt router costing me £10. Has VPN and smartdns built in. Works brilliantly.
Hi nufclad, can you tell me which router you are using, ive been recently looking into trying this myself
Thanks
Hi Si,
Sure, its the DIR-615.. I think most revisions now work too . Mines rivision d4.
Pick them up really cheaply. I got mine on Gumtree brand new boxed. But eBay its between £8-£15.
Really can't fault it.
Thanks nufclad,il keep an eye out
My mom has just been moved into a nursing home, and they have Wifi, but they have the network firewalling her smart TV from the internet. Her phone and Ipad work fine on the network streaming Netflix, AppleTV, etc. but not the TV. I can't get chromecast working either. I have 2 shields at home, and was wondering if there is a work-around that lets the shield appear as a phone or tablet on the network. I'm would like to try it out on one of my shield pros before I drop the $$$ just to find out its not possible. Sideloading or rooting a possibility? Simplicity is paramount and it needs to work automatically since she's 78 and obviously tech savvy. Any suggestions?
It's the nursing home's firewall which you presumably have no access to. You could use cell data to circumvent it with an unlimited data plan if the signal strength is sufficient. 4G is capable of streaming HD but lower resolution may be needed depending on bandwidth. Use a cell phone as a hot spot... most tethering is capped at [email protected] so you may need to hack that as well.
Or simply use a phone or tablet to view it...
Never tried it as TV sucks today, but in the 60's it was a sight to behold. She probably misses her soaps, some things never change.
