Has anybody experienced random shutdowns on their N4? It's happened twice now for me in the last few days. I'll go to turn on the screen and find that the phone is completely shut down and needs powered back up, without me having shut the phone down.
One strange thing associated with this is that it completely wipes my battery stats.
Please provide more information.
Stock? Unlocked? Rooted? Custom rom? Custome kernel? Undervolted?

Sorry, stock rooted. Both times happened when there was plenty of juice left in the battery, this morning when it happened I was still at 95%.

Are you sure it's actually shutting down?
The reason I ask is that there's an issue where the screen won't wake up, but the phone is still functional (can still hear notifications and feel vibrations etc.). It looks like it's shut down, but it actually isn't.
If so then I believe it's a known issue, even on the stock (unrooted) rom. It happens to me every now and then, and as far as I know it needs a hard reboot to fix (hold down the power button for 10 seconds).
Don't know what you mean by wiping your battery stats? A reboot would do that anyway, wouldn't it?

There's a video on youtube showing how this phone just shuts down after running a benchmark for long enough (that was about 10 minutes at normal room temperature..)
Could it be that your phone was doing something in the background, and because of the overheating issues that it has, it just shut down to prevent damage?

I wasn't doing anything significant right before hand. The last things I did were: checked Facebook, modified a Tasker profile, and swiped away a couple apps from the recent apps screen. Phone was cool to the touch. I was in the basement with no cell coverage (wifi connected), then moved upstairs and next time I tried to turn on the screen the phone was powered off.

No it was shut down, had to hold down the power button for 2 seconds to boot it, felt the boot vibration and saw the boot animation. This happened after being off charger for about 2 hours, but upon booting the battery screen showed on battery for 1 minute. Usually when I reboot the "on battery" time is preserved.

Is there a fix for the screen not waking? I'm still on 4.2(stock and rooted), does 4.2.1 fix it? I can't seem to update to 4.2.1, if it does fix it. But that's another issue...
Ya know I'm starting to think it may be my belt holster that's somehow shutting down the phone. This is the first day of my new holster and now the phone has shut itself down 3 times, each time I've noticed it after pulling it from the holster.

I only had N$ for 3 days.
Yesterday when I was taking a picture, camera app was running, while I was putting kids together phone screen went black. Only way to bring it back was to hold power button and it went through full boot up cycle, so I would say it did shut down on me.
Stock, no root, updated to the 4.2.1. Battery was between 50 and 75% and it did not wipe it's stats.

Oh man that's gotta suck. Worst moment possible. Mine has shut down as well several times.
I find that my phone likes to randomly reboot when using bluetooth. May be a coincidence or not. At times the widget toggle for bluetooth stops working too, so there's something going on with bluetooth. My bluetooth problems documented here:

Does anybody know a sequence of button pushes that will shut down the device? I know holding power for 10 seconds causes a reset, but is there a combination of button pushes that initiates shutdown?

If you hold just power button it should bring a popup with Power Off option, which is a standard for most Android phones.

I have the same issue recently. I've used nexus 4 for 1 month, this issue just occurred recently. it shutdown without any notice. I've drop my phone once, cracking its glass back, but it doesn't seem to relate to that issue. I guess maybe this is some software problem.
Hi there, I currently have a Samsung Note 4 running CM12.1 and in the past two days the phone has randomly "crashed" late afternoon/night (5.30pm today and 8.40pm last night). My phone performs fine throughout the day and then I'll notice that the screen doesn't wake up if I press the home button like normal. If I then power the phone on it boots up and instantly powers off after booting since it has "0%" battery. Both times the phone had plenty of charge in it, around 30-50%. Has anyone else encountered this before?
I have some screenshots but I am unable to post the Imgur links in my post because of my post count. Any other way I can post them?
Specs:
SM-N910F
CM 12.1-20151022-NIGHTLY-trltexx
Android 5.1.1
I can provide more specs if you wish.
Buy another battery, if another battery is OK then your old battery is broken
I had a similar issue where it would, after a clean software reset, shut down unexpectedly at 20% or so - then subsequently at 40%, 60%, and further 20 percent increments when I'd let it shut down of it's own accord. RMA'd it under warranty, pretty pleased with the service I got. No software fix for it.

Recalibrate your battery. I had this issue, too, after flashing another ROM. My Note 4 would shut down and die at ~50%.
1. Download Battery Calibration from Google Play
2. Fully charge your phone. By "fully" I mean not only to 100% (which, in your case, will be something like 50% effective charge), but until your LED has turned green. For good measure, just turn your phone off and let it charge overnight.
3. Run Battery Calibration, and tap the big button that says "Battery Calibration"
4. That's it.
You should do this every time you flash a new ROM, because there's always a chance your battery gets miscalibrated during the process.
Thank you very much for your help everyone, I'll try the Battery Calibration and let you know if it fixes it!
In the last few days, my XT1575 has randomly shut itself off. It is not a battery issue, as when I started the phone after the last shutdown the battery had 87% life left. When the device reaches this state, the only way I've been able to get it restart was to put it on the charger, even briefly.
Until yesterday I was running stock, but rooted. Yesterday, I did a factory reset, but am running now running the Sabissimo Android version: 6.0.1 | Build: MPH24.107-58-1.
Not sure best next step, as it's nearly the point of unusable given randomness of shut downs.
Dumb question but do you possibly have a case with a sticky power button?
Yes I have a Dizonic case and perhaps this is the issue.. so I guess I go naked for a bit and see if it still happens?
I have had massive overnight battery drain, roughly around 40% in 8 hours. The phone seems to be in deep sleep most of the time but for some reason cell signal quality drops to "orange" during the night.
The phone is in exact same spot the whole time. Signal quality changes to "green" as soon as I start using it.
Anyone seen similar issues and do you think the battery drain is really due to the signal quality changes?
Try clearing the cache on the phone. I had the same issue. I was pissed off that my brand new phone was draining 10-15% every hour while idling. After I cleared the cache, it fixed the issue. After doing some research about it, it seems that after the update, you should clear the cache.

How to clear the system cache on OnePlus 5:
Turn off the OnePlus 5
At the same time, hold the Home button, Power and Volume button
Wait until the phone vibrates and the OnePlus logo shows up
Release the Power button, but still hold the other buttons
Now highlight the Wipe Cache Partition option and use the Power button to select the option
Go down to Yes and use the Power button to select it
Press the power button to select Reboot System Now
The OnePlus 5 will now reboot and clear the system cache

Cheers, I wiped the cache this morning so I'll see if it helped tonight.
I have the same issue, except I'm from India (so not due to At&T) and my my signal strength always is green. But, my battery just drained 33% overnight. Thought of placing a replacement on Amazon but came across this post. Will try and update. Thank you!

Hey Texas, I'm not sure how old your battery is. But if your battery is on the fritz it could be losing voltage in your phone will shut down. I think you'll normally get a bad battery warning but I'm not positive. I'm using Alpha Oreo 1.3.1 with MK 2000 version 2.2 kernel. And have not had any random reboot problems. On the contrary. It has been extremely stable and I'm getting extremely good battery life especially with greenify. Normally 24 to 27 hours on a full charge. With anywhere from 3 1/2 to 6 hours of screen time.
