Is an S7-like Always On feature possible/available? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The S7 has a cool new feature where you can choose to always have the time displayed on your screen, along with other things like battery and stuff...
Is there anything like that for the S4? It'd really just be handy to have the time always-on, but any more is wonderful.
Thanks.

ambient display is as close as we get which isn't always on, just occasionally...

I wouldn't recommend it. The S4's screen wasn't designed with Always-On in mind, so it is possible that screen burns may appear due to the prolonged display of static images.

Is it possible. ..I believed that s4 and s5 screen is almost the same kind...
S5 developer has successfully ported Always-on-display (AOD) from s7 edge to s5 snapdragon version...so I think is it possible to have a s7 ported rom for s4..
I may be wrong xD

With S7 apps = possible,
But, don't wish for Always On Display feature. It's insane for S4 battery life for me...

S6 Quick Hands On....for now.

Got lucky and was able to obtain a S6. Just got it today, rushed to take some pictures and a quick video. More to come as days pass by and time allows me to "play" with it more.
Sorry for Mr. Blurry cam...was such in a rush at the moment I took pics and vid. Will take nicer ones soon.
Pictures HERE
Video HERE More to come..
First impressions:
Awesome device, coming from former S3 user who has switched to Nexus5, LG G2, LG G Flex, LG G3 and current phone a Nexus 6 and LG G3.
Felt solid in hand, great build quality.
Super smooth and fast. What touchwiz stutters?
Root works
Apps allow individual settings.
Option to remove apps.
Very little BLOATWARE but once again this was international model.
Felt really tiny in hand after using Nexus 6 for awhile but not that fault of S6.
Trying to get TWRP built for it but time might be my limiting factor.
Feel free to ask any questions about device. Will post better pictures and video when time permits.
For me no SD card and no removable battery not an issue. If Samsung included removable battery and possibly a SD card then I can see this selling as well as the S3 and S4. My guess it sells as well somewhere between S4 and S5.
Love the device but on XDA the main complaint will be no removable battery and SD card.
Looks pretty cool so far, thanks for sharing. Did rooting trip knox?
Are you on a latest firmware? How do you find the camera quality? Might be good if you can do a simple comparison with G3/Nexus. Any comments on throttling so far?
the black color really looks fantastic.
how's the battery life? what kind of screen on time do you get before needing to charge?
So can you completely uninstall pre-installed Samsung apps, or disable only?

Disable only.
One question the the Author - how are the heads up notifications? When you are receiving a call while you are doing something else (playing game or whatever) do you have a small heads notification like in stock Lollipop or it is like before? Same goes for messages - can you replay to one, without having to go to the messaging app?
Can you confirm if rooting and tripping Knox broke Samsung Pay??
How is memory management, how much is free with only a few apps opened?
Do apps have to refresh when moving to something else and going back what was previously suspended?

Fingerprint works with Knox 0x1 here and Tab S, so it should work. When we have xposed for Samsung lollipop I'm sure Wanam Xposed will allow you to use the secure storage features.

In the next video, could you click on gallery so we can see how fast it comes up. Make sure it isn't already running in the background first. Curios how much lag is there.

Widgets for edge

So I ordered my Edge and then went to Best Buy to mess around with them. I noticed the edges are not as deep as the Galaxy Note. I know the Note is a little thicker, but I was a little bummed that there weren't many widgets for the Edge already installed. Anyone have any input on this or are we going to have to wait until rooting takes effect and people start building the widgets so the edge actually gets good use.
Guess we'll just wait and see
the Edge is only for "looks" and less functional than the Note Edge...
doubt there would be much use of the Edge because again, it's just suppose to be a phone to "impress" people how C00L it looks lol...

Got the edge don't real use any of the edge features, but still found it worth it with visual experiences you get with the cured screen.
For those of you that haven't found this yet, don't thank me. Thank the app developer. This app is prefect for the Edge.

Exynos users: happy with your phone?

Hi folks,
I've thinking of picking up an S7 Edge tomorrow and want to see how Exynos users are enjoying the phone. I had the S6 last year and thought the performance was decent; there were a few instances where I noticed a small amount of lag/frame drops. With that, a few questions:
- Are you happy with your purchase?
- Does your phone ever have micro stutters?
- I plan on installing Nova Launcher on day 1. If you have this set up, do you notice any hiccups? I tried a store demo unit and it was incredibly smooth.
- Would you purchase the S7 instead if you could do it again?
- Are there any key things you dislike about the hardware or software?
Thanks.
I had the ATT S6E and an international s6-edge-plus and loved both but my S7Edge international is a far superior device. I only use Nova Prime on my OPX I use T/W on the S7E. I'm rooted running Echoe Rom and Dark Carnage theme and am thoroughly satisfied with it. In my humble opinion it's Sammy's best Galaxy by far.

I have Exynos variant and I never experienced any stutters or lags, besides the SD820 has the better GPU, but the Exynos has the better CPU, if thats what your comparing.
ooh and open bootloader, open for rooting.
Where do you get these themes from @s7freak?
Also im loving my S7E. Came from a s5 with AllianceRom and was extremely happy with it. Took the dive and got this phone and man i have to say it goes well beyond my expectations. Throw in EchoRom and a couple of xposed goodies and this thing flys.

I'm so happy with my phone, amazing battery, amazing performance, amazing screen, amazing design. No problems until now, except for the Android System drain which started after last update.
Sended from my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Gold Platinum
The Exynos has come along way only annoyance (for some ) is that AOSP Roms are unlikely to happen as Samsung hold on tight to their Source code....
However when you have Echoe on its not even a thought, as the Freak says it just flies.....
The S7 Edge is such a great refinement all round and when you pick it up you'll see just what we are on about....

Came from an iPhone 6s plus and have to say that it's not as fluid as iOS but it's the best I've seen on android.
Thanks for the responses guys. Would you suggest rooting and flashing a ROM or staying stock? Two things: what's Echoe, and what's a good ROM for performance?

How is the ROM .does it have any issues . . how's speed compared to stock firmware and can I install that theme without root ? .is it advantageous to root this beast .I don't find much of performance inadequacies to make such a decision .but the advantage of xposed framework modules does have me thinking .someone give me an idea ?

Rom is flawless if following OP properly. Yes you can install the theme without Root again by following OP. I Root mainly to debloat what I CHOOSE to debloat because some dev's remove things that I use.
It's all on your personal preference.

These are all things that vary and my opinion is exactly that...
However here is my opinion: As I always root my devices as this gives me greater control of how I like my phone setup, Xposed does or can have an effect on performance depending what Mods you use, but even without it will have a tiny effect regardless (however I have Xposed running for YouTube addaway, Background playback...
Echoe Rom is the Smoothest & Created by a great developer....
As for advantages of root there are many as this gives you system access, allowing you to Customise to your liking...
However spend some time reading about it and take it from there....

Best android phone I've owned since the first Google Nexus.
7+ hours sot with everything on including location and 14hrs off charge.
Fast and doesn't heat up.

The only annoyance with the S7E in my opinion:
Knox
Battery (1 day (2 if you're lucky))
Status bar icons - always greyish
Edge screen for typing.
Because of the curve edge, I tend to hit the keys on the side. I sometimes end up hitting the wrong keys but sometimes keys no where near where I pressed.
I am sure I will learn round these but those are the only issues.
I am still debating rooting. I havn't seen much feedback of other users

- Yes, i'm still overhyped. This Phone is a very very pleasing experience to use.
Battery Life is one of the BEST i've ever seen in any Phone. On normal Usage (whatsapp, browsing, etc. Not heavy Gaming, or heavy 9gag browsing (9gag drains battery quite good)) i can hit 7-8 hours screen-on-time EASY. One time, i hit 5 Hours screen on time, and still had exactly 50% Battery Left. This phone can be a BEAST when it comes to battery Life.
Of course, it helps if you disable stuff like "always search for Wlan/Bluetooth", and use a Dark Theme to make use of Amoled.
The Exynos version has like a 15-35% longer battery Life, depending on situation/apps used than the snapdragon version, you can Root it and isntall custom recoveries, and the Audiochip is better (for Headphones)
- I bet it does. The Question is, if you notice it.. Theres an option, that makes it visible, if you get any Frame drops. During heavy usage, there will be some frame drops for sure (No Android phone exists, where this isnt the case!!). However, on my subjective feeling, its very snappy, and very smooth. The overpowered CPU, GPU, and the fast UFS 2.0 storage (with 4gb ram) are a very nice combination.
So i think, the Exynos S7(Edge) is the phone, with one of the Fewest micro stutters there is in the Android world.
- not using nova launcher, because i'm quite happy with the stock one. But i don't think, you will have any issues.
- Nope. I chose the S7 Edge over teh S7, mainly because of the bigger Battery. And mayyybe because of the slightly bigger screen. I came from an HTC One M8, which was just a few mm smaller than the S7 Edge.
S7 Edge has maybe 10-30% longer battery life, depending on situation.
- A Few things i dislike:
On Touchwiz Launcher, there is no automatic alphabetical order in the App Launcher. When you download new apps, you have to sort it manually.
In Task Switcher, the apps are scrollable with kind of Grid. Stock google is much smoother, as there is no Grid at all. Difficult to explain, but it feels strange to scroll up and down.
Headphone jack could have a bit more "power", and maybe Quality. But only veeeeeery enthusiastic audiophiles will complain here. I use my 399€ UE 900 in-ear-monitors, and have no issues. It sounds clean, and correct. No distortions, or a false frequency response or anything.
But all complains here from me, are just very little minor stuff. After using it for almost 2 months now, i truly understand, why so many Reviewers crowned it as the best Smartphone so far, and also called it "close to perfection".
Checking all the Specs, and the overall package, it truly is THE Best (Android) Smartphone, you can buy right now. Even more with the better Exynos chip.
My only annoyance is the fact that the home button is raised, and the fingerprint sensor is not always-on. I would have much preferred to unlock the phone just by touching the home button and not pressing it. Right now I'm using the phone without any security.
Another annoyance, coming from an LG G2, is the lack of double-tap to wake. That was a really really useful feature.
And a final one, the AOD screen is just useless. It doesn't display all notifications like the LG G5, only missed calls and SMS messages.
Happy but not as i should be, All galaxies s7 i tested with angry birds 2 and PPSSPP emulator perform poorly, that not due to hardware but some new software features they introduced with 6.0.1, disable gameservices does not help, rooting and forcing governor to performance eliminates a lot of it but it's not perfect.
When Note 5 got 6.0.1 i had same issues, went back to 5.1.1 and all working perfect!!! it might not affect all games, but those two it does and that freaking annoying, there are some lags here and there, touchwiz lags other than that, no other flagship can beat S7.
Everything is perfect!!
Except for the knox.
So i cant root and get roms and xposed..
Except for the accidental touches due to the edge.
Tho when i bought a spigen hybrid case.. everything is fine.
Its quite thicker but it feels safer on my hands.

Active fingerprint reader

Hello everyone!
I just had a look at the new A5 2017 because I want to buy one for my mother and a feature that was very nice and useful was the active fingerprint reader. Just rest the finger on the home button and the device wakes right from the Always on Display.
I am running android N with the new Grace UX on my S7 Edge and i was wondering if there is a setting somewhere i can enable to be able to use this feature.
I know some people will think is useless, so is no need to comment for no reason.
A5 with new hardware... soooo nope. We dont have that on s7 edge.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
That is sad. I was really liking the feature ,hope somneone will figure out how to add it later.
It's only a workaround, but downloading Always on Amoled from the Playstore is working just fine. Fingerprint is always on, no need to push it, and you get double tap to wake, plus other useful features. Definitely worth a try
it's the same hardware, only Samsung is the usual ****. improvements only on new smartphone to increase the sales

Was going to say that having the reader on constantly may cause some form of wake lock.

Ambient Display

Is there anyone who have successfully installed "Ambient Display" at A5 2017? I got it but DisplayOn comes up and I don't know how to change it to Ambient Display.. Thanks for any help in advance
Anyone??
I've seen the Ambient Display on a Galaxy S8 yesterday, but i don't know if this phone always had this feature, or got it with Oreo.
Do you know? Porting from Galaxy S8 shouldn't be that difficult.

Hi. I didn't know that. Maybe it's clean Oreo so that way AB it's working. Google want all the phones to have clear android now to make easy and quick way to update (Project Treble). Will keep looking for more details.. Cheers
It was Galaxy Experience for sure, but it wasn't the real AMD, it just showed "Snap from XY" or "Message from XZ", but that would be more than enough for me. I think it's called "Edge Display".
