I just thought that I would pass along my experience with the fingerprint scanner. When I first started using the Note 4, I went through the fingerprint setup for my right thumb. I did the 10 times scan, and then, as the setup describes, did 10 more times with the thumb almost at a right angle. The phone stored the fingerprint and everything was OK.
As I used the fingerprint to unlock the phone, I almost always had to scan it several times. Sometimes it took 4 or 5 tries to get it to unlock.
On a whim, I deleted that fingerprint and started all over. This time I did the straight down 10 times, but did not do the additional "angle" scan 10 times and stored the print.
Now I am able to unlock the phone on the first try about 95% of the time. It never takes more than 2 tries to unlock. Yes, I have to scan my thumb straight down, but I think that is a small price to pay to get away from the frustration of having to scan a bunch of times to unlock.
As an aside, I am using the fingerprint scan for apps such as LastPass and they are now a pleasure to use with a scan match on the first try.

Wow. This is actually true I hated the finger print first time. But now I can actually use it with out frustrating. I wish my finger could be in a bit of an angle but if it is it brings that annoying inconsistent.

Each finger print should be a different angle I do both thumbs under one fingerprint scan St multiple angles

The trick I found that works great is take the finger that you are going to use the most and make all three finger prints the same finger at all angles. I have a 98% success rate.

you mean three different angles of the same finger? or you do different angels of the same finger like 10 swipes of different angle, and so on....?
different angles same finger. I tried to trip it up, total of 60 swipes for all 3 finger prints
The scanner works horribly for me. Maybe it's my calloused construction hands.

The scanner works fine for me. But my wife still cant get hers to work. She is frustrated and keep bugging me.
Yeah, I have to swipe my finger at least 10 times to get the phone to unlock.

Swipe slower, swipe faster, swipe the center, etc...

**Brilliance** :highfive:
Only had one finger print scaned. Perfectly scans my finger never had to do more than one swipe. Been using it for a week now.
Index fingers=pretty good
Thumbs=terrible
For me anyway.
Works well for me. Unlocks first try with thumb and index finger pretty much 95% of the time. Very impressed. Works far better than my dads IPhone 5 does for him.

My wife is still having trouble with this finger scanning. I even have to hold her finger and help her do this exercise. Then today it doesnt work anymore. I notice her finger skin is peeling.
You notice it will not work after you wash your hand and dry it? It has to be super dry.

Yep, that is the key! The only failures get now are if I swipe too fast, too slow or don't swipe over the entire key! It's really a lot more accurate than people give it credit for if you swipe it correctly! I can unlock with both my index finger and my thumb.
As winter has dragged on (dry in the upper Midwest) this has gotten much worse for me. Especially if I'm outside in the cold, the scanner almost never works. I think the dry skin is causing it to trip up. I need to re-register my fingers all the time to have a chance.
So, a couple of times at work, I was able to unlock my phone via the fingerprint scanner while wearing exam gloves! I was surprised to say the least. I picked my phone up and out of habit I touched my scanner with my thumb. It unlocked. The first time it happened, I could only get it to unlock twice with gloves on, however, the second time it happened, I could do it repeatedly until I changed the gloves. Unfortunately, know one was around that I could get to record it. The gloves are thin, but have a micro bubble like texture made for gripping small objects easier. Just curious if anyone else has had similar experiences. For the time being, I have switched back to pin unlock, but I really do miss the fingerprint scanner.
You're overreacting. As long as nobody else's fingerprint can unlock it it's still secure. I doubt it actually reads your fingerprint, it probably maps subdermal ridge flow angles and other features that are electrically conductive like TouchID does. TouchID has been proven to be pretty secure and likely it works the same.
Here's a similar situation: http://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/2p07wf/_/
Turn it back on, Samsung is pretty good when it comes to security features.

In fact the reason it didn't work with new gloves is because they didn't have time for sweat to build up in them to make them conductive enough. This informally reinforces my suspicion about how the Samsung reader works. Thanks

The documentation is very clear that it only stores information necessary to recognize your fingerprint, not the entire fingerprint.

I'm sure the scanner is just seeing through the glove, and can make out the ridges and lines through a thin latex glove under certain conditions. As long as its unlocking for the correct fingerprint, I don't see that as not secure.

I would only be scared if a glove without my finger in it could unlock the device.
Finger print scanner is not at all secured lock, initially I was so glad to hear all about this app but later on I came to know that it is just for name sake a finger scanner lock. Never ever be depended on it.
Does anyone else feel the fingerprint scanner is getting slower? It doesn't feel as snappy as it used to.
No
If you try and use it right after eating Taco Bell with the grease and cheese and sauce that may be the problem.

YES. However in my case it turns out it went slower when I used a case. Noticeably slower, annoyingly so. Maybe you've got a case on it?
Maybe a tiny bit but nothing is really complain about.
Not noticed and slow down.
For me it's always snappy.
Seems lightning quick still to me 2 weeks in.

Mine has pretty much stopped working for my right finger and maybe only 50% for my left finger. RMA time.
mine works for a while, then it doesn't, then it works again. I don't want to RMA it but I may have to.
No problems here. Working just as fast as the first day I got the phone.
So far it works a treat!
Mine is still crazy fast
So for mine I found out I have to clean it, good, with lens cleaner. I guess finger marks build up on it after time from dirty hands. It is now better, but still feels a hair slow, may just be due to my being used to it now though.
I work in a super dusty. Greasy. Wet place. My finger print is always dirty. Works super fast for me.

Hi folks,
Anyone else experiencing issues with the fingerprint reader?
I've set up the maximum if 5 fp, but interestingly all the 5 are the same finger.... And the device won't recognise my finger ad soon as I lock the phone.
Tried with different fingers= same result.....
No matter what I'm doing, clean cache, re-set, etc....
I've already exchanged the phone but the new one is the same....
Any idea how to fix it?
Sounds like your fingers aren't compatible. Is it a common practice to have the same finger registered five times? Only have once perfinger myself and never have an issue unlocking.
My experience is it gets a lot better with time. I did make two entries for my left thumb which helped increase read rate from maybe 2/3 to >9/10. Other fingers read well and got better. In sunlight, in dark, no problem it just works. If your fingerprints are in some way unusual or hard to read it may "just be you.".
Do you have a friend whose finger you can borrow to test things out? Rule out the phone ?

Tried with my wife's finger. It reads a little bit better, but the overall successfully unlock by fp is way below the acceptable number (tried around 10 times, unlocked around 3-5)

Oh that's awful! I'm consistently >9/10 after a month and half of use. Even early on was probably75%. Only problem I have is right after a shower it doesn't like swollen skin fingers.
As a test I just did 20 unlocks using the various four fingers i defined. Only one fail, and that was left thumb at an angle.
Phone is definitely better than iPhone 6 I have for work (50% rate).

How does everyone register their same finger more than once? It tells me I've already registered that finger?
I noticed a dramatic improvement when I washed my hands really well, cleaned my screen, THEN registered my fingers.
Are you using a screen protector? If you are that is probably your problem.

Using the official oneplus tempered glass screen protector.
Yes compared to the Vivo and other phones in built fingerprint reader OP6T's fingerprint reader is slow and has some issues.
Yesterday my fingerprint was working about 90% of the time, today it's complete trash.
Also there is a setting in the phone where it will completely wipe and factory reset your device after 15 failed attempts. With this crappy scanner it's a good thing to uncheck this option before your phone gets wiped.
Can this problem even be fixed with a future software update or is it flawed hardware?
Not too happy about a $1,600. phone with a crappy fingerprint scanner.
Don't worry about the factory wiping aft 15 attempts. The phone will ask you for an alternate method (pin or pattern) to unlock the phone once the 5th fingerprint attempt fails.
I think Samsung will improve it with future updates, but not by much.
I would not hold out much hope for an improvement. If you want to see improvement you need to do three things:
1. You need to enroll your primary finger at least 2, ideally 3 times.
2. When you are enrolling your finger, don't follow the instructions to move your finger around, rather just naturally grip your device as you would when you grab your phone to unlock it, and only scan that way.
3. This is the most contentious one, but probably the biggest difference. Do not use any screen protector at all. Any physical barrier is a sound barrier, and therefore an ultrasonic sensor will perform worse the more layers of stuff there is on top of it.

I tried this once I got the phone enrolled my finger twice... problem solved..
One thing that the fingerprint sensor does not do well with, for some bizarre reason, is dry skin. If you have really dry fingers or the weather is very dry causing you to have dry fingertips, the sensor is definitely more prone to failure when scanning.
I also found one bug just a few minutes ago. If you have a Bixby routine running with widgets, you are required to unlock your phone to see the widgets, but the fingerprint sensor us disabled in this mode and needs you to explicitly press the unlock option before it will even scan.
A completely dry finger is the main problem. Try licking your finger and then try to unlock the phone. It would unlock the phone extremely fast and easy.
I don't know how this can be improved with a software update...
Fyi I am using the preinstalled screen protector. I agree that it would work much better without it. But I am afraid to leave the screen unprotected... What do you think?

Because it's not supposed to be used on this device, it's unsafe and the S10 doesn't have an Iris scanner anymore, it will get fooled by a simple picture.

Don't worry. Once the S11 comes out the FPS issues will be history and you will also get Android 10 plus the latest security patch, or at the very least one that's no more than 3 months old. That will be $2000 please.

Rushed out? What are you even talking about?
They clearly specified that Android's face unlock is crap and it should be deleted, except Samsung never deletes stock android features, just don't touch it and use the bloody world's most advanced fingerprint authentication.
Try keeping hands moisturized with lotion instead of spitting :crying:. i use a lot of alcohol at work which dries my fingers out. after using lotion finger print worked a lot better. Keep Moisturized boys and girls lol
