Root the Droid Turbo 2 for a Bounty? - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

UPDATE FOR BOUNTY: By my count (using my Droid Turbo 2 Calculator lol) the count for the bounty is now over $1700.00 and that is only counting those who put an exact amount of what they would be willing to donate. Quite a few others said they would chip in, but didn't leave an amount. Maybe we should all post what we would be willing to chip in. I'm good for $50. I know we have one guy who said he would throw in $500. I can't match that and I don't expect anyone else to either. What an awesome amount! Hope this helps!
*** I will not be updating this thread anymore as I feel it is not going to achieve root. I haven't been contacted by now regarding this and every time I try and post this in an Android General type of thread, it gets shut down bc the mods are busy people. No sense in reaching out to the dev's in other communities to see if they could help when Mods shut them down all the time. That said, I'm probably moving to a new device soon. I wish you all the best of luck on getting this guy rooted. I will still donate my part that I said I would in hopes this gets this rooted.***
I wanted to post this question here as I thought it wouldn't belong in the Q and A section. If it's in the wrong place MOD, please feel free to do your job.
I am willing to put up some cash into a bounty for ANYONE who can successfully root this device. Doesn't need the Bootloader unlocked (although that would be nice). Is anyone willing to participate and donate some $$$ for this project? I have no idea where to start nor do I have the time. But I do have money to spare for a project like this. I'm trying to get the bounty to at least $500. Who's with me?
I thought if we could get this thing going we could post it in XDA General to see if any other Dev from another device would want to take a stab at this.

Moto X Force user here, and if any developer gets interested in developing for kinzie (ROM, kernel, etc), I would be happy to colaborate, so we both Droid Turbo 2 users, and Force users can be blessed with awesome stuff for this little beast.

If this becomes official I will contribute for sure

I'd be down for 40 at least if it happens.

I will happily put up money for a bounty. let's make this real. this phone is way too good to not attempt a bounty. imagine the battery life on root.......

Can't wait to get a debloater and screen color calibrater.

Willing. Now it would be nice if they (devs) "waited" till 6.0 finally hit the phone to try to gain root or BL unlock but who knows better to have stayed on lollipop I think, yet I updated the update anxiety set in I guess XD

what kernel version (3.somtheing) are you at and what security patch, there has apparently been a huge exploit recently patched you may still be able to gain root

March 1st security patch, and kernal version 3.10.84
Would be nice, but could we secure it afterward tho...

ok so you should be in the clear (they closed up the potential for exploit in a march 18th patch, and kernel 3.18)

I have yet to see a viable root method for the DT2

I would be up for $50 at least... I feel crippled without my root based apps, not to mention debloat (not just disable) and tethering (other than the sim workaround).
Watching this thread daily since the true possibility of root has surfaced:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo-2/general/root-discussionthink-tank-t3239979/page32

Count me in for $25

Count me for 15$ for root and 25$ for BL unlock ..

Put me down for 25$ too.

25

I had a dream last night that bootloader/root was found.. Or or a nightmare...

Count me in for $25

I can do $25

So.....

I hardly post here, this is known.
Even still....The end of the month is coming up for early adopters. Still no custom roms. This is not good news.
I pondered a resolution...and other than returning for a refund and waiting for the fascinate, I couldn't really come up with anything.
About a month ago, I was fortunate enough to read a donation thread in this section of the boards that was titled: "help buy a droid x, for developer" .
Obviously that idea has been done. So i thought what can be better?
im going to cut to the chase. most of you HAVE to know the deal and have some idea of what we need. Hopefully some of you know exactly what we need and work with it daily Perhaps somebody here has a friend that has a connection. Instead of fearing the efuse, we can start a fund for the individual(who will remain anonymous) who can upload the engineering ROM, encryption keys AND the bootloader. Once the files are verified as authentic by the talented members of xda, then the raised funds will be transferred over to the anonymous uploader of said data.
Discuss.
Uh...
No, thanks

sure, thats a bad idea for a couple of reasons, legal issues come to mind
we have root with froyo coming soon and the sbf just came out. id say were doing pretty good for being three weeks from launch. enjoy it for what it is and enjoy the goodies as they come. There arent many we dont already have.
custom roms dont entice people? LOL. wow.
That is all that the X needs, as it will add longevity to the device. Being binded to motorolas software release schedule, really blows. This is a great unit, it just needs some work on the software. Said fixes that most likely will only be done by devs on these forums.
Thanks LegionTHEFecalExcretion, i knew about the security breach and the sbf. Hey, at least you offered somewhat of an answer and not some peabrain bot rebuttal.
The encryption keys are, I'm very sure, tightly controlled at Motorola. Most companies have software design/build control where software ready for compiling gets checked in and typically encryption keys are locked away within these build control systems.
This means that, not only do you have to raise enough money to make it worthwhile for the person to potentially lose their job and get sued, but it's not usually all the average-Joe programmers who have access. It's probably the higher-up project managers or coding leads.
I just don't see the donation pile getting big enough to entice someone already making a very good living to take a change on losing their livelihood and getting sued over it.
Why not just enjoy the phone, be happy with the current root abilities, and know that at some point we will be able to load custom roms. Yes I want to load a vanilla rom just as bad as the next guy, however I am tired of seeing people ask "are you done, are you done, are you done yet?, how about now, now? maybe now"?
Give some breathing room to these guys, maybe they have kids, jobs, wifes, a life.
I don't understand why you guys have to be mean to the guy. He is new to the forum and probably new to smart phones. He may even have very little knowledge of what a programming environment would be like and how great the downside could be for someone to leak said information. He had what he thought was a good idea and was a b it ignorant. That does not mean he should be treated like crap.
I have some advice for you omni, go get yourself an iphone and leave this forum... i can't believe that you would have the mentality to whine about some of the brightest minds that we have come to respect in this forum, complaning that they don't work fast enough for you... your a very selfish person who has no right to treat the respected members of this forum in such a way.
I for one love this phone and will continue to use it with or without custom roms...
And a special thanks to those working on the bootloader/ custom rom programming... we will wait for your perfection.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Some phones are easier to work with then others. The DX has not been out that long, have patience.
As an example the Droid Incredible was rooted and a custom recovery added pretty dang quick. On the other hand the Droid Eris took awhile to root and even then, some Eris users had "upgraded" to one of several "leaked" roms and could not root while others that did not leak could. I was a "leak" adopter and it took them several more months to finally get root for the "leaked" Eris owners.
Give it time. They will figure it out eventually.
Or go get something that is more customizable, like the DInc.

Did you pledge in a 2.2 root bounty thread?

Due to recent developments, I've updated the information in the OP;
The actual exploid.c exploit was created for the Droid 2 by Sebastian Krahmer at http://c-skills.blogspot.com/. You can donate to him via Paypal to [email protected]
The phenomenal Dan Wager got it nand unlocked on 2.2 and reflashed to 2.1 and got everything working right for the Evo. You may know him as the phenomenal regaw_leinad - he put the guide together, and he's been updating it and helping people root like a madman ever since (does this guy ever sleep?). You can donate to him here. Note: he did all of this, and he doesn't even have an EVO! Wouldn't it be great if he got enough donations to get one of his very own?
Unrevoked worked on some of the early work involved, and it's their method that is used in the root process. They don't accept donations, and instead ask that people make a donation to the EFF, the organization that was behind the recent ruling so that it is now 100% legal to root your phone. You can make a donation to them here.

everything below this line is based on old information
----------------------------------------------------------
To all of those that hopped on the bounty for root 2.2 bandwagon - I'm calling you out!
To the best of my knowledge, the dev who uncovered the exploit (Sebastian Krahmer) isn't a memeber here, and the unrevoked team (who worked the exploit into full root) doesn't accept donations, and suggests you doanate to the EFF instead.
You can find out about the EFF and the important work they do for all of us here;
http://www.eff.org/about
And their donation link is here;
https://secure.eff.org/site/SPageServer?pagename=DON_splash
So I'm sure each and every person who said they would donate to whoever found root already put their donation through to the EFF, or will in the near future, right?
Right?
I really and truly and sincerely think we should come together and hook Regaw up with an EVO.
I know the root effort was spread between several individuals but I've known Dan for a while now and he not only Rooted the 2.1 OTA for the Hero he also put a lot of time and effort into making 2.2 OTA EVO root a reality.
AND he/we (I was his sidekick ) made one of the best roms for the Hero, RegawMODv2.1
RegawMODv2.1 is like 6 months old now and STILL spends most of its time on page one in the Hero dev section. It's a bare bones, stripped down, tastefully themed Sense rom. I think the EVO community would benefit greatly from Regaw joining us here.
He's a great dude and even though I'm already rooted I will be tossing a few his way to help him join the gang
(sorry fachadick, don't mean to hijack. I agree with your point and just wanted to suggest where I think some of the "Root the 2.2OTA" pledges should go)
Done, and done. While I respect the EFF and appreciate their efforts, I chose to contribute to the Regaw EVO Fund. I know there were others involved but he was the one that actually delivered the guide, so he gets the loot.
This is the first 'bounty' thread I've ever even opened, but had I been a part of it I'd be giving to Regaw.
And this is why I don't like pledge threads because most of the time 90% of the people who pledge are nowhere to be found once the objectives have been reached. People will make excuses like "that's not what I wanted", "its too complicated", or "I can't get it to work". The only time I ever made a pledge was when we were trying to get darch an evo and followed through. even though darch never got an evo, his donations were long overdue and deserved it. Even though I wasn't stupid enough to run the ota for the evo, I'm going donate to regaw because the guy deserves it. Hopefully all the people who jumped on the bandwagon and made a pledge will follow through.

Thank you for proving why all of those bounty threads were BS, and don't belong on XDA.
I have absolutly nothing against Regaw, I've used his guides before, seen how helpful he is in answering any question that comes his way, and think without a doubt he deserves an EVO of his own - I would love to see what he could do with it. I think the community coming together to get him one is a great idea.
But in the lead-up to root, all of these folks were saying that they would pay who found root. In this case, that would be unrevoked, and they say on thier site to send all donations to the EFF. If someone comes out with a simpler guide, also using the unrevoked method, do they get a donation also?
If I've minimized Regaw's involvement in finding root, as opposed to just putting up the first guide for it, I humbly apologize. And again, I love and appreciate how dedicated Regaw is to XDA, and think that there should be a donation fund for him to get an evo (nice one, Neb!). But this is all about the "bounty" for those who developed root, why not donate to both?

I've known Regaw since last year, we've worked on a lot of stuff together and I can tell you in the last 6 months the guy hasn't received anywhere near enough donations to buy an evo, even if he were up for an upgrade
Definitely not bragging or anything, I remember when I wouldn't have had an extra dollar to donate to anyone (I wouldn't have had an EVO in that case anyways) but I've donated a little over $100 to various devs over the last 8 months or so, and I have zero stolen apps on my phone.. My point is I believe in donating to people who volunteer their time to make my Android experience better.
I would image many more than 100 people will refer to Regaw's guide to root their EVO's. If those 100 folks each donated ONLY $5 we'd have another FANTASTIC dev here with us!
fachadick, I'm sure Dan would take no offense to your comments about him posting the guide but let me offer this: Unrevoked found the root but Dan worked with Matt to help find it and get it ready for the masses.
Also, Dan himself found the exploit for 2.1 on the Hero (I know, not relevant to us, just another example of his talent and dedication.)
IMO, If someone releases a simple-root app or a simplified guide then sure, they deserve whatever people are willing to donate to them too.
I'm not suggesting anyone NOT donate to the EFF, great idea too. Personally, I'd just like to see Regaw get the hook up first..

I do agree with you. I approached darch before I made that thread for him. We didn't talk much after that and I always wondered if he soured on the idea because he didn't want to feel obligated because of it.
Don't really know what else to say other than Dan is chomping at the bit to start devving for the EVO, I think he'll end up exceeding peoples expectations just because that's how he is.
Also, the link in my sig goes directly to Dan's donation account, so I wont be keeping a roster or list of donations or anything, just hopefully compelling people to help him out.

Not sure why you're offended by my decision to follow through with my promised donation. I gave the money to the individual who directly helped me, rather than an organization with whom I've never had personal contact.
If it was a case of merely providing "an simpler guide," I guess you'd have a point, however thin it may be. But didn't regaw have a hand in actually developing the root method? Please correct me if I'm wrong, (it certainly wouldn't be the first time). That being the case, I feel more than justified in donating as a show of appreciation.
My funds are limited, so sorry, I can't be throwing cash at everyone involved. I had to choose (as I stated before) the one who delivered on the goods. Don't worry though, it won't happen again.

Sorry, I wasn't offended by your specific post, it just happened to be the first one, so I jumped on it. I applaud your donation to Regaw, and again, beleive that Regaw deserves every dollar he gets, and hope that he'll be able to help out on the EVO side of things like he did for the Hero (i'm going to try and throw him a few bucks later myself)
The point I was trying to make was that the bounties weren't "for the individual that helped me directly", they were for who cracked root. In this case it the exploit was found by someone not invloved with XDA, and the root method was developed by unrevoked as a team. Unrevoked, as a team, discourages personal donations (as per their website) and asks people to donate to EFF instead.
If someone helps you directly, by all means, shoot them a donation. They deserve it. All I'm saying is that the bounty threads have to go - if a bounty says that the donations will be going to X, and people commit, they should be donating to X (or who X says should get the donation).
Hope you didn't take any of that personally...

I agree with everything you said here 100% (although I've got a soft spot for the EFF - it's my experience that most people don't even know who they are or what they do).
I think donate links are a great way for the community to give back a little to those who they feel deserve it, and Regaw is at the top of that list (along with with the guy who simplifies the root process, the creator of that great theme you're rocking, the dev who'se killer kernel gives you 4 days battery, or whose rom makes using an android device that much more enjoyable for you). I just have problems with all of the bounty threads that seemed to have cropped up in the last few weeks.
edit - just reread your post, not sure if you were implying that I pulled out donating to EFF out of the blue - it wasn't my idea, they're the ones that the Unrevoked team says should get donations instead of them.

really to me it seems like unrevoked has little to do with it. the dude who found the exploit that lets you revert back to 2.1 deserves all the credit for this. all the various unrevoked versions used were already being used to their capabilities that were already know
also just because they who found it isnt a member here why should he get the money?

This is also true, but since we're unable to donate to the person who directly found the exploit, the next step down would be the team was able to use this exploit and be the first one out to develop a root method with it. As I understand it, without this new exploit, unrevoked wouldn't have been able to add the new radios for the Evo to unrevoked, and unrevoked versions prior to 1.1 wouldn't have worked.
Which came first... The egg or the chicken? Once you all find an answer to that question, then you all will know who to send the damn "bounty" to.

Seems you are new to this thread, there was a previous bounty at the early release of this note to BeansTown106 , money was raised, Beans got the Note, came out with a root within 30 minutes time, then sold the note.
I doubt that any one here could participate in this again to the same person.

No, not confused, you can simply refer to any P600 user who donated at the beginning & got fooled out .

How about a taster. I've worked with both devs for the p600 and am in the preparation of building my own rom. They both provided the best rom they could without the tablet then raised the money really quick and gave us two of the smoothest roms around. Just a thought you have nothing to lose but a tablet and a lot more in donations to gain once people see the work you have put in
The only issue I have with this is what did he do with the initial money we gave him when he got us the first root of the device a few months ago. I know just me I had given him $50 for his contribution to the community, pretty sure he raised enough at that time to go and buy a note if he really wanted one. I don't know just my observation.
I'm pretty sure a bounty comes without an obligation to buy the device. So whatever he did with it is his choice.
Some users are also pissed off the the root method beanstown106 provided tripped the knox counter. I read the initial thread and the bounty was set for root and at that moment the was no Knox condition set for the bounty. So you anyone is allowed to disagree with his actions and I can imagine not being happy with the Knox tripped root but beanstown106 didn't actually do anything wrong. Althoug I can imagine people not being happy with him collecting the bounty first and then asking for donations to buy the device.

Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Exynos Developer Device

Hello everyone,
most of you probably don't know me since I did not develop for Samsung devices for quite some time now.
I would be interested in aiding the Exynos 5420 development scene (in particular on the Galaxy Note 10.1) and prepare a custom Android distribution for it (Team EOS 5.0 - Lollipop).
I can get all the required drivers and binaries I need for development, since most of it is open source luckily.
And the Nexus 10 (manta) can still be used as reference for many things.
All I need is a development device to debug on.
It is particularly important that this is the Galaxy Note 10.1 EXYNOS (WiFi-only variant), and not the LTE (Qualcomm) variant.
I created this thread to ask whether someone has a spare device lying around, maybe because of the little development on Exynos 5 devices, or if people would be willing to donate a device (I'm a university student and unfortunately can not afford the full price for a new device. I'm willing to dive into the Exynos development scene and spend time on this device though, including extensive debugging).
You can leave a reply in this thread or contact me on gmail: [email protected]
I have a better idea. Sending device is a problem. But we can donate to you, and then u can purchase P600 or P601 on SWAPA or EBAY. not new but fully working
I would be glad to see working AOSP/MAHDI or other ROMs runnig on my P601
Yeah, that was the initial idea.
I would pay any shipping costs or parts of a device (a used one is perfectly fine).
The issue I see is that probably not enough people willing to donate enough small amounts of money, hence I asked if someone had a spare device I could buy or pay the shipping costs.

I think it would be better to ask for donations because there is not a lot of people here although it would be hard. There have been previous instances where at least 2 different devs raised donations for this device before stopping development shortly after so people do have some trust issues. It would take a while but i'm sure people would donate considering you are offering an AOSP experience. If you renamed this thread to something like: Donations needed for new device- AOSP rom development. Then it would catch a lot of eyes because that's what a lot of people want The question remains whether people would actually donate. The average cost for you would be around 250-300 euros I think. That means you would need around 28 people (10 each). Whatever way you decide to go down, I wish you luck and I look forward to any rom developments if you do manage to get the device :good:
You seem to have quite a respectable history (in both Rom & kernel developement), so I think getting enough donations should be doable (and I'd be willing to donate a few bucks myself)
But I do have a few questions:
1) What about warranty? Some devs who had collected donations for a (used) device, have bricked their devices -> no more developement
Therefore P600 owners might be scared / hard to convince
2) what exactly is "Team EOS 5.0" and what makes it different from other Roms? Would you perhaps consider developing other Roms / kernels as well? (like porting over PA for example?)
Or would you maybe consider becoming the official P600 CyanogenMod maintainer (since we don't have one, yet)? [<- I think this one would be reason enough to donate]
Last but not least:
You could ask one of the XDA members who managed the previous donation-collections for help (they have successfully done it before, so they might be able to do it again :fingers-crossed: )
PS: The Note 10.1 2014 is great for college, trust me - I'm a student, too . All you need is the Papyrus-App from the Play Store.
Thank you two for your reasonable thoughts.
I think the main reason why the previous developers stopped developing for this device rather quickly is the Exynos chip.
The main difference between me and anyone else is (or so I believe) the fact that I am especially interested in developing for the Exynos 5420 chip and the drivers for it (mainly from the Insignal forum source).
As far as bricked devices, I can say I had a Samsung device before, and as long as the bootloader is unlockable and access to ODIN (The firmware flashing tool) is granted, a hard brick is rather hard to achieve. I see little risk here, and I assume my previous development experience will prevent me from making major mistakes in that regard.
A new device would cost me approximately 350€, so if we could collect about 300$ with donations (which would equal something like 270€), I'd pay the remaining costs.
People are of course free to check my development history and/or references first and see if they think I would benefit the aosp development scene for this device.
The ROM I mentioned (Team EOS 5.0 lollipop) is essentially AOSP 5.0 with selected features that we code ourselves, like EOS Weather, or the NX gesture interface.
If people however see the need for an official CM maintainer, I'd be happy to become this as well, all I need is a device to debug and develop on, I'd be willing to spend the time to officially maintain this device.
Other developers and/or contributors should also expect support from me in areas of kernel development or AOSP custom ROM development. I believe in 'sharing is caring', so all my knowledge and achievements on this device shall benefit the community.
If some of you could maybe contact the people who raised donations before, I'd be thankful and gratious for the support. All donations will be listed here and the whole process shall be as transparent as possible.

Hi. Here's the most recent donation thread which was successful :good:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2742793
I don't see why another thread is needed though. I don't mind opening one up for you but you might as well use this one if you just rename it and state your intentions in the op.

Okay, so if maybe one of you guys, with good contact to the community, could open a new donatiion thread to collect the ~300$, I'd be grateful.
Or maybe @drrasii could chime in here and edit his first donation thread and link here as a reference to let people know what I want to do.
As I said above, I'd be willing to become the official CM maintainer, or if CM refuses to accept this for some reason, I'd host the needed sources for the device on my personal GitHub and keep it updated so people can build whatever ROM they want.
Of course, the first goal would be to get Lollipop running on this tablet, which I'd start with as soon as the device is ordered/has arrived.
Hey guys. That donation thread I started a while ago was on a whim cause I wanted Hyperdrive by sbreen on my Note. Was lucky enough to have him commit and get enough people chipping in for the tablet which was met with success. I'm by no means a great organizer or somebody with tight connections here on XDA . Probably would be best if someone who wanted to head it up would start a new thread stating the case.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the quick answer.
Could one of you guys (@22sl22 or @r4yN) then open a new donation thread and explain a bit about this thread and my plans?
If we manage to handle this process rather quickly, people should be able to enjoy L on this tablet soon hopefully.

Sure, i'll open one now :good:
I'll also post a message in here after the new thread has been created so that people know http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10-2014/general/rumours-plans-to-android-5-0-t2861225
EDIT: before I open the thread, how much do you actually need? $300 is about 240 Euros, not 270 so we will need a bit more, say $350, would that be OK?
Thank you very much.
Actually, 300$ (240$) is enough, I'd be willing to pay the other 100€ myself if it needs to be.
I want to get started rather quickly and have L running on this device, so I'd order the device as soon as the 300$ are collected.
Why a P600 model and not the P601 model?
The p601 to develop is exactly the same from p600 plus the phone side.

Why the delay? Here are the first 10 €!

Hi RaymanFX!
Glad to see that a real dev wants to take our device and port CM11 for us.
I do not make many words, but simply push the first $ 12.12 to you.
That's the current rates for 10, -€.
Hope it works as good as for sbreen (dev from HyperdriveRom) and many people jumps like lemmings behind me. :good: Haha!
Hope also we get the money quickly together and will try to continue to encourage people to make a small donation.

Hey RaymanFX, excited for asop 5.0 but curious about some of the stock features that make this tablet. Is there any way to preserve multi window support or s-pen features ?

giving away old bricked SGH I257M

I ended up bricking my phone trying to get a custom recovery on it and said screw it and got the Moto G 2015.
This is the US AT&T and it's running android lollipop 5.1. Right now it's stuck on bootloop more or less, when I boot it up AT&T says it detects unauthorized software and to take it to the nearest help center or whatever.
I'm wondering if anyone's interested in it for development purposes or whatever? I'm willing to give it away for the cost of shipping or if it's worth anything to you, you can feel free to offer payment for it i guess? It is a decent phone outside of all of AT&T's stupid bull****.
Hope this isn't against the rules to post or anything. I don't really care about trying to make money off this, it just seems like an awful waste of a perfectly good phone if someone with more know-how than me can easily fix it and maybe better the dev community for it.
Feel free to let me know

Hey man, just wondering if this offer is still on the table? I noticed you mentioned it was running 5.1... was that a custom ROM? Any idea if the bootloader is unlocked?

It is still on the table, the thing is just lying around. I made a mistake saying it was running 5.1 though, it HAD been running the latest version of cyanogenmod months ago but eventually I needed to return it to stock for something dumb and when I tried to switch back, I bricked it.
The phone was rooted and I'm PRETTY SURE I managed to unlock the bootloader, but it's possible I may have messed that up because I bricked it while trying to flash a custom recovery. The phone still boots into download mode so I figure someone crafty enough with a better ability to figure out what files are required could fix it with ODIN or something.
Good morning
if the offer is still available can you contact me at [email protected]
