Does anyone know how to get Adaway to stick on DU? It seems the hosts file gets updated but then reverts back to original after sometime.

Yeah I haven't been able to get it to work, their own integrated ad blocking (that doesn't work at all) gets in the way I believe so there's nothing we can do. Have you tried another ad blocker like Adblock Plus?
System > Etc....find all 3 Host files and delete them. Run Adaway and it will stick.

Yep! This was my only complaint with their ROM. I substituted adaway with some adblocking Xposed modules. The modules coupled with DU's native adblocking did the trick.
Thanks for the input. I think i actually got it to stick. Here's what i did
1. In adaway preferences, touch Target hosts file then select custom target
2. Select custom target then enter /system/etc/hosts.og
3. Close preferences the hit download and apply.
4. If asks to create symbolic link select yes
So far is been sticking for me. I i think hosts.og is the original and being restored at some point.

Try adblock plus as well, maybe that works.

Check to see that the file /etc/hosts actually gets updated when you use adaway/adfree. Also, you need to reboot your phone after you apply the new hosts file.
Same issue here, Used adaway, adfree, none of them seem to work.

No you don't, my ads are always blocked immediately after running ad away even if I don't reboot.

If you don't reboot your phone immediately after using AdBlock or AdFree (I switched from the former to the latter), then you will run into an issue where the Back button doesn't actually take you back in the browser. You have to double click it and mess with it in general.
I didn't know this for a solid 5-6 months when I first rooted my Atrix back in the day and it DROVE ME NUTS.
Anyway, go into Superuser or SuperSU and make sure that you've given AdBlock or AdFree root access. I would maybe even recommend just installing both apps anyway, reinstalling, granting root access, run/apply new hosts file, and then immediately reboot.
adway working just fine, are you sure that you rooted it properly though.

Whether you have to reboot or not depends on cache and DNS. Just because your ads are always blocked, doesn't necessarily mean everyone else doesn't need to reboot.
Adfree works fine for me. Reboot the phone to be safe.

There's some funky stuff going on for me. I checked my hosts file, and it had in fact been updated by Adfree/Adaway/Adblock Plus (I've tried them all troubleshooting this).
Superuser says that they have the appropriate permissions.
I take it that there's multiple methods for rooting, right? I just followed the first walkthrough I found. I'm running the CM10.1 nightly with this issue.
Could someone who has adblocking working describe what method they used for flashing recovery? I'm thinking that there's some sort of problem with my filesystem. One symptom is that I can't figure out where RomManager is storing my backups. It sees them, and they take up space, but they're not in my SDCARD partition.
EDIT: I see that my backups are in /data/media/clockworkmod and the hosts file that is being altered by adblocking software is in /system/etc.

did you get it working?
I am having the same problem
Nexus 4
4.2.1
Unlocked & rooted using 1.3.0 toolkit..
I've tried all of the popular adblock methods, and they don't work for me on my rooted Nexus 4.
When I go into terminal and test a blocked domain, e.g. by doing "nslookup ib.adnxs.com", I get
Server: ....some IP address
Address 1: ....some IP address
Name: ib.adnxs.com
Address 1: 127.0.0.1 localhost
***********
So it looks like the hosts file is working in the terminal. But when I go into the browser I still see ads served from, for example, ib.adnxs.com .
***********
EDIT: for some reason my Nexus 4's browser looks in the /data/system/etc/hosts file instead of the usual location that adaway and adfree use, which is /system/etc/hosts. An easy fix is to create a link from the former location to the latter, or manually put the hosts file in the former location.
Try using "AdAway" from the play store.

Tried it, didn't work.
But I've figured things out.
For some reason, the browser is using a different location for the hosts file on my phone: /data/system/etc/hosts . I don't know why -- maybe it has something to do with the method I used for flashing recovery.
In any case, none of the programs like adfree or adaway were installing the hosts list to that location. I added it manually, and voila, adblocking goodness. If any one needs any help doing that let me know.

Same issue in stock browser and chrome.
I swear, I must have done something wrong when I flashed clockworkmod. I had the problem the first few times I rebooted that I had to reflash recovery, and the phone reflashed it back to stock recovery. Whatevs, so long as everything works.
My Oneplus 3T is running on OOS 4.1.4 (Android 7.1.1). i just rooted(via systemless method) my 3T 4 days back with Magisk V12, after unlocking the boot loader and flashing the latest TWRP v3.1.1. no dm-verity triggered, so no warning on boot except the unlocked boot loader warning. my system is read only. i just enable magisk systemless host.
i installed the latest version of Adaway v3.2(Supports systemless root) and enable the ad blocking but it doesn't worked still am getting ad in apps like es file explorer, mx played, etc.
i had tried many ad blocking app like DNS66, adguard, etc.
i had also tried both host based ad blocking and VPN based ad blocking nothing worked for my.
dose any one have any idea or any suggestion to block ads in my one plus 3T

Apps are getting smarter
I believe the main problem is that app developers are getting better at circumventing ad blockers. I use AdAway, and it has a "Scan for AdWare" feature that basically shows you the apps you have that it knows can get past it. I think MX Player is on that list. ES File Explorer isn't, but it gets ads through also.

I have Adguard premium and it works great for all of my apps (except pandora). The problem with adaway is it's just a host blocker. Adguard will use https filtering to remove the ads from apps that are being sneaky. I don't know what apps you have so I can't be more specific than that. I'm on RR right now and also have no issues on OOS 4.1.3 for the other OP3T in my house.

It has a VPN-based mode (which I use), but because of the https filtering (which you need to manually enable in settings and install a certificate for) it filters more ads because it sees all of the ad requests of the app. Last time I checked Adguard had a trial period you could use to evaluate the app.

@LMcR92 blokad is only working with the browser. it blocked only ads in the browsers and not in apps. Still am getting ad in the apps like ADM, es file Explorer, MX player, etc. it also consumes more battery.

I also have adguard premium.
I am running latest OOS beta with magisk systemless root.
I have tried to use Adguard premium via Local HTTP Proxy (i.e. root method), but it just doesn't seem to work and as a result I use the Local VPN method, which seems to work.
I did use to use Adaway previously, but that isn't working at the moment, based on these problems.

At last after few days of my observation, i found that all the ad blocking app where working fine in Oneplus 3T.
Adaway v3.2 almost blocks all the ads, even though there some ads in like es file explorer, mx played, etc. the reason for those ads is that, they are the coming through the Facebook.com.
is there any solution to block these ads ?
@Azaruddin: https://www.seven.com/android-adblocker-download.php < AdClear. Does the best job, if you can't afford a license of AdGuard .
What apps do you guys use to block ads and still get OTA updates?
I just got a Mi A1 and I intend to root it and install xposed, but with the OTA updates in mind.
If you guys have any suggestions they will be very much appretiated.

If you're talking about ads in browser just use firefox and install adblock plus in addons.
In youtube install youtube adaway you can search it here
In apps i don't know ?
Magisk systemless hosts + adaway = system wide ad blocking. Only very few apps are showing ads (those are probably using their own ads instead of standard ad servers).
For youtube I use ogyoutube with microg.
Without modifying the system you can still use the open source project http://blokada.org
I use block this! It creates a VPN which blocks ad dns hosts.

I've read it as well (only one guy who mentioned it btw.), but to be honest I do not believe it. I am using the latest Adaway version which has enabled "systemless mode" by default and it didn't modify my system hosts file. But I must admit that I didn't receive any OTA yet and had to always flash full ROM to update my system, so can't guarantee it

Yes, I flash full ROM via fastboot each month (did the same with my old Nexus 5X, so I'm used to it).
Magisk has a systemless adblock module called "Unified Hosts Adblock".
Don't block adverts. Ya, I may sound like a noob & jerk but that's the only way everyone of us get to use free contents. The developer & content creator won't be giving away stuffs for free if they don't earn. Support the Developers & content creator.

I support devs directly, I either purchase a full version or donate to them. If there is only "free" app filled with ads, I see no reason to not to block them. As soon as content creators start serving unobtrusive ads (web, youtube, ..) I'll stop blocking them. Until then...adaway is and will be my second installed app (the first one is Titanium backup pro ). Btw. there wasn't a single ad during past 20 years which I would be interested in, if I clicked on one, it was by mistake.
I use minminguard (xposed module). to update, simply flash full stock rom (keep user data in mi flash tool) then update ota. Unlock bootloader again, boot TWRP and flash magisk.

Not sure what went wrong on your end, but modifying system data would lead to fail of Safetynet check. I am running Magisk + systemless hosts + Adaway and Safetynet passes the check, so I assume that nothing has been written to the system. I will confirm once I actually receive an OTA, so far fastboot images were out earlier than mine OTA
I have rooted 7T Pro 5G successfully, but after installing AdAway, it does not work due to not being able to access the host file location. Probably due to the different system structure here - but has anyone gotten it to work?
You have to root to use this app, and without it, the others don't really do much - especially with Google crap.
You need to enable systemless hosts module
