Problems blocking ads - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've rooted my Nexus 4, but I can't seem to block ads. Tried adaway and adfree. Any suggestions?

Try adblock plus as well, maybe that works.

Check to see that the file /etc/hosts actually gets updated when you use adaway/adfree. Also, you need to reboot your phone after you apply the new hosts file.

Same issue here, Used adaway, adfree, none of them seem to work.

No you don't, my ads are always blocked immediately after running ad away even if I don't reboot.

If you don't reboot your phone immediately after using AdBlock or AdFree (I switched from the former to the latter), then you will run into an issue where the Back button doesn't actually take you back in the browser. You have to double click it and mess with it in general.
I didn't know this for a solid 5-6 months when I first rooted my Atrix back in the day and it DROVE ME NUTS.
Anyway, go into Superuser or SuperSU and make sure that you've given AdBlock or AdFree root access. I would maybe even recommend just installing both apps anyway, reinstalling, granting root access, run/apply new hosts file, and then immediately reboot.

adway working just fine, are you sure that you rooted it properly though.

Whether you have to reboot or not depends on cache and DNS. Just because your ads are always blocked, doesn't necessarily mean everyone else doesn't need to reboot.
Adfree works fine for me. Reboot the phone to be safe.

There's some funky stuff going on for me. I checked my hosts file, and it had in fact been updated by Adfree/Adaway/Adblock Plus (I've tried them all troubleshooting this).
Superuser says that they have the appropriate permissions.
I take it that there's multiple methods for rooting, right? I just followed the first walkthrough I found. I'm running the CM10.1 nightly with this issue.
Could someone who has adblocking working describe what method they used for flashing recovery? I'm thinking that there's some sort of problem with my filesystem. One symptom is that I can't figure out where RomManager is storing my backups. It sees them, and they take up space, but they're not in my SDCARD partition.
EDIT: I see that my backups are in /data/media/clockworkmod and the hosts file that is being altered by adblocking software is in /system/etc.

Root Explorer - Anyone having issues with deleted files?

I have never had an issue, but a few people have commented recently (odd that it's mostly recent) that when they delete a file it seems to re-appear.
IF (and only if), you are having this issue, could you please post the version of Root Explorer you are using and the build you are running (and perhaps how you got your build, ie kies, ota, odin, flash).
I'm hoping this will lead to a common issue (not likely, worth a shot).
The most recent build is 2.12.4. I don't understand why there is a small number of people having issues. I've been trying to contact the developer as well and hope this thread will help him too.
Thanks.
Have you tried root manager?
I'm using Root Explorer - 2.10.2 with JI6. I updated through Odin. I do have root.

I had this issue with 2.12.2 and Bionix Fusion & Obsidian.
Sean what did u do to resolve it?
This is sort of ot, but Astro has decided to let me delete system apps which it never did before. I'm running fusion 1.2 stock kernel.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

didn't resolve it really, I wanted to delete some bloatware but I ended up just freezing the apps in Titanium Backup.
I contacted the developer *and got a super fast response*. Please make sure you are on the latest build. Please see his email pasted below.
Hi,
Thanks very much for your support, it’s much appreciated. I actually have a Galaxy S myself with Android 2.1 and have been running Root Explorer on it successfully for some months now. There was an issue a while back in that remounting the system partition didn’t work, but that was fixed in a recent update. Also, I’ve just updated to Froyo and rooted using Z4Root and Root Explorer is still working well. So on a rooted stock Galaxy S I know there are no problems.
So the question is, what is the difference on the phones where there’s a problem? Are there any major differences in the carrier specific versions? And are the problems only happening on custom ROMs? One person recently reported that Root Explorer didn’t recognise root on his Galaxy and I found that he was running a custom ROM and the su file was placed in a non-standard location.
Ok, something has just come to mind. When I first received my phone I was surprised to find that the system partition was mounted as R/W even before rooting. But of course you still don’t have permission to change system files. I’ve just replicated this situation by remounting system as R/W and renaming su to sux. I then closed Root Explorer and restarted it. It started in non-root mode and when I went to system it correctly reported the file system state as r/w but there was no “Mount R/O” button. I tried a delete and then a rename and the app reported these as having worked. But going out and back in showed that the changes didn’t actually work. I’m pretty sure this must be what’s happening for some people. So the question you need to ask them is whether they can see the mount button. If not then their phone isn’t rooted. Do you agree that this is the most likely scenario?
In the meantime I need to make a change to Root Explorer to properly check whether these operations worked and not mislead the user that the change happened.
Thanks for pointing this out. Galaxy S phones are probably the most popular out there at the moment. I think by fixing this issue there will be a lot more happy Root Explorer users!
Best Regards,
Colin

Once I pointed out that users were indeed rooted and saw the button, this is the response I received:
Well that blows my theory out of the water
The actual delete is just a simple rm command so there isn’t much that can go wrong. One possibility is a dodgy BusyBox binary. I’ve seen this cause problems for a few people but it’s very rare. If BusyBox is ok then I can only guess that the remount hasn’t worked. One question to ask is whether the remount operation appears to work. If it does nothing and the mount status stays as either r/w or r/o then this may be the problem. If this is the issue then it would be useful to see the output from a mount command. I can then push this through Root Explorer in debug mode and find out what command it’s running to perform the remount.

thanks for your help.
I'm running Root Explorer 2.12.2 on Obsidian v2.2 Froyo. I do see the Mount as R/W button, and I'm running BusyBox v1.17.1
I'm going to try re-installing BB, I'll post back if it fixes the issue.
Edit: WTH, it's working now. I had a dodgy BusyBox install.
Edit x2: And it's broken again. Weird.
The developer said there was an issue with old builds, why not update?

Working on that now. I don't think it's an issue with Root Explorer though because if, upon the permission failure, I simply re-install BB, RE is then able to edit files again. I need to mess around with it more to be sure, but I'll update RE in the meantime.

Restart button?

Any recommendations for a restart button? I'm too lazy to power off then power on the device.

Quick Boot!! Nice app..
Does that actually reboo the tab?
I thought all it did was kill all running apps to 'simulate' a reboot.
It DOES need root access though (and I've not yet seen any point to rooting the A500).

It definitely reboots! The pro version has a mode that "simulates" a reboot, similar to what you're talking about.

Although it's not the subject, I really wanted to note that rooting A500 does worth it for sure. I'm using ADFree, ClockSync, Autokiller, File Expert, NTFS mount, Root uninstaller and a few more root-required applications which add some epic user experience. Just consider unrooting your device back before installing any updates or system modifications. Cheers.

Yes, i wasn't trying to bring it up as a subject, just asking if rooting it was worth it for the reboot app.
I can see some people might want root, and the ADFree is probably one good reason. The rest don't interest me at all.
I used to have a custom Darky's ROM on my previous Samsung Galaxy S, I had an extra power-off menu letting me choose Reboot or Shutdown or even Recovery or Download modes. Obviously, I was using the feature to reboot the device pretty often; I'd like to have a one-button widget rebooting my device properly.
Also, about the apps which don't interest u..
*my tablet is usually about +/-2,5 sec every time I shut it down, not reboot;
*autokiller helps to save memory, at least I can be sure I don't have to start a game level again because of an e-mail or something like this;
*a decent root file explorer letting you see hidden system directories is a must just because any minimal and safe modifications do improve performance

I have tried this and everything says that the phone is rooted, however, when I open apps they are not asking for permission. Is there something else that I need to do? Apps that work only on rooted phones are working fine so I am kind of stumped. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

That's the way it works and part of the reason the exploit is scary, apps don't ask for permission.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I have SuperSu installed and I do get prompts for granting or denying apps permission, but yeah if you don't have a Superuser access management tool, apps are granted root permissions immediately. If you don't want that custom boot logo and that's why you uninstalled SuperSu (if you even had it), you can use Wanam exposed and Xposed framework to fake system status and set it to official.

I have SuperSU installed and that is what is confusing me. Sometimes it asks me to grant permission for apps I open and then other apps will open without asking any permissions.

Here is what i am trying to do...I used to be able to get music from Google Play to Doubletwist with my rooted phone. I had to unroot it and then root it again. Doubletwist used to ask for permission, however now does not. Nor will the music move over. Long story short, that is what I am working on. Unsuccessfully, I might add. Last time I rooted the phone, I used the SD Card method and this time I used towelroot. Not sure if that would make a difference or not.

Hey Adaway to stick on dirty unicorns?

Does anyone know how to get Adaway to stick on DU? It seems the hosts file gets updated but then reverts back to original after sometime.

Yeah I haven't been able to get it to work, their own integrated ad blocking (that doesn't work at all) gets in the way I believe so there's nothing we can do. Have you tried another ad blocker like Adblock Plus?
System > Etc....find all 3 Host files and delete them. Run Adaway and it will stick.

Yep! This was my only complaint with their ROM. I substituted adaway with some adblocking Xposed modules. The modules coupled with DU's native adblocking did the trick.
Thanks for the input. I think i actually got it to stick. Here's what i did
1. In adaway preferences, touch Target hosts file then select custom target
2. Select custom target then enter /system/etc/hosts.og
3. Close preferences the hit download and apply.
4. If asks to create symbolic link select yes
So far is been sticking for me. I i think hosts.og is the original and being restored at some point.

Setting Up The Phone: Backups

When you set the phone up, does it ask if you want to download another Android phone apps and settings backup and/or can you connect another Android phone via usb-c to transfer its apps and settings?

I did two backups with adb.
"adb backup -noapps" (THen renamed the backup)
"adb backup -apk -all"
I restored both backups.
That was the only way to get some app data.
I've never tried the USB thing.
I usually have root so it's never an issue.
I don't have root on this phone and the only thing I really miss about not having root is add blocking.
I did find an add blocker that uses an on device VPN and it behaves sort of like a firewall.

Root (with Magisk) may be possible using the adb method, while not having a custom recovery. I haven't tried it, as I don't have the phone yet. I saw someone else post this link in another thread, but I can't find it now.
It's definitely not a "one click" solution or anything, so definitely read the instructions if you go this route. Whether or not it works on the Essential, I'm not sure. But it's the only possibility so far.
