Shutter Speed on AOSP ROMs

I Just switched to a G2 from an Xperia Z and I have to say the shutter speed is rather slow. I Was sitting in a moving train trying to take a picture of a document however the shots turned out blurry due to the shake. Its honestly quite disappointing as this was supposed to be one of the better smartphone cameras and it even has ois to help with handshake. I'm running the latest Paranoid Android for D802 with the camera app from the OnePlus One as it has the best shutter response so far. Is there any ways to improve shutter speed of the camera on an AOSP ROM?

Shutter speed vs Galaxy S6

Can anyone provide some detail or a video of how fast the shutter speed is on the G4? I have a galaxy s6 now and love that I can capture my kids and dog running around without any blurring. The camera is impressive. Can the G4 compete in that regard? Any sample photos?

Seems real fast to me. My wife has the gs5 active and seems just as fast. Came from a nexus 5 that took 5-10 seconds to focus so it seems like lightning to me. Hope that helps

Laser focus helps keeping objects Sharp and crisp real quick. That alone might improve your moving target less blurred.

On good light condition, it's really fast focus.

I have them both and s6 camera feels more complete. Lg needs to do lots of work in the software field.

The Samsung camera software has been really good for a long time. I agree that the LG camera software is lacking in the polished department compared to Samsung. It's not too bad once you get used to the layout though.
Software aside, I found the S6 camera to be slightly faster than the G4. Both take incredible pictures for a phone, but the S6 snaps instantly with zero delay while there is a very short delay in the G4 in auto mode. It is very close though. You'll only notice the delay coming from an S6. Most G4 users probably don't notice.
Honestly, I actually preferred the S6 auto mode over the G4 auto mode. The S6 seemed to focus more accurately on quick shots. I'm hooked on the G4 manual mode with auto focus though. It more than makes up for the occasional errant focus. The S6 had them occasionally too, but less often.
As far as shutter speed goes, the G4 allows adjustment from 30 seconds down to 1/6000 of a second, so I think it can probably snap as fast as you'd ever need. I'll do some testing with it at the kids' sports games this week. It doesn't matter how quick the shutter speed is if it can't get the focus right when you need it...

Yea, but the G3 also had laser focus, and was pretty bad in regards to shutter speed. Was hoping for a big improvement. Nobody ever mentions shutter speed comparisons in phone reviews and it's annoying. It's a huge factor for me.

I've taken a number of nice pictures of my kids, and so far the camera seems really nice and capable. I don't have the S6, so I can't really speak to it in comparison (after Note 4 LP experience I had, I don't think I'll buy another Sammy). It takes them faster than any other device I've had. The picture quality is better than any phone I've owned (and if you look at my signature, I've owned some from virtually every manufacturer).
I haven't noticed any lag on taking a picture. I'll admit I've mainly used it to take pictures during the daytime.

I've had a couple pictures do that...it kinda felt like it was focusing on the background instead of what I was trying to take a picture of at first...I just tapped on screen where I wanted to focus seemed to fix.

Keep 2 meteres distance from the subject. set focus to infinity. Everything at 2m and beyond is in focus and anything closer than 2m will be soft. Make sure you keep that distance if they are moving. This means you're on your feet and moving with them.
The next bit is shutter speed. 1/125, slower will make things soft.
Resize to 2MP. If light is low you will get a noisy image but resizing will reduce the noise and it will be sharper.
Focus speed is never really an issue even with older devices as you can focus on something where they are and recompose by keeping your finger pressed on the shutter button. The problem has always been about getting a fast enough shutter speed and sensitivity, these are high iso images by definition anyway.
One way to reduce shutter speed is how they move across the frame. moving straight across requires the fastest shutter, at an angle means slower, moving in a backwards or forwards motion is the easiest. The fewer pixels that move the slower the shutter can be.

That's not what noise is, sounds like you're talking about photos being out of focus.
To the other posted, I've seen this as well. Even outdoors at ISO 100, there is a lot of noise in the photos.

Excuse my photo-related ignorance.

Lack of OIS

Hello guys in waiting to order this device as soon as it's back in Stock in India. I was more concerned about the SD 810 and lack of OIS. Though the reports are now out the device isn't getting hot, I'm still not sure how the impact of OIS is.. I've seen comparison videos that showed too much shakiness during the video capture and sometime during low light pictures. Can you please tell the impact of the absence of OIS?

The comparison videos don't lie. OIS impacts video taking pretty badly, especially at 4K. As far as photos, I haven't noticed any impact even in low light.
It has electronic image stabilization and it's possible it could improve in an update, but I wouldn't count on it. If stable video is a deal breaker for you, you're better off with a different device sadly.

I'll agree with the above. I having used the Note 4 compared to my Nexus 6p the OIS make a huge difference in video. If your going to shoot 1080p or UHD4k then I would recommend some sort of tripod for the 6p. Walking or running is out of the question. That said, the 6p takes great photos. Way better then what my Note 4 can produce in low light.
Shooting in 240fps works pretty well on the 6p.

Buying G4 Plus for Camera

Hello,
I have read mixed reviews of the G4 Plus camera, while DxoMark gives it a score of 84. Many others consider it average in day light and worst in low light,
can anyone can post unedited/un-cropped images for sample. Is the G4 Plus a good buy as camera phone ?

In my experience it's a very good camera for a phone. Pictures here won't mean probably too much, since you have no reference point and the low resolution imposed by XDA.

Okay, let me tell you my experience. It's a good camera overall. Takes very vivid and sharp images in daylight ie in good conditions. But It has an average to above-average performance in low light conditions but..but..but.. certainly better than many phones that are in its price range. Another thing I wanna mention is that it struggles to snap moving objects. It's 'cause the g4 plus lacks optical image stabilization. I think for many of us It'd be a big deal. For me it's NOT.
I would certainly recommend this phone for phone photography.

Does this moving objects lag happens in manual mode as well ? when shutter is set to higher speed or only in auto mode ?
i think the fastest shutter speed is 1/5 in pro mode can you confirm this ?

For camera, this phone is goooood.....?
But you should also pay attention to other issues like heating while camera is in use for more time and screen burn and ghosts touch..
( while screen burn and ghost touch is not common in all device, but if your luck is working wrong then you will have to face them )

I seriously doubt that is another phone with a better camera at this price point ($300). In low level light or in daylight. You need to move up to $700 to get a better camera (like added optical zoom and stabilization).
Now, I always say that phones cannot compete with dedicated cameras, therefore they should not be used for planned photo sessions (like when you expect to have great subjects).

Well HTC desire 628 ( my last phone ) gave shutter speed of 1/8000. so i don't want to get anything lower than that. Other option i got is ZTE Nubia Z11 which has an Sony Exmor 298 but not sure if its good enough

The camera is good for the phone price but it has some quirks which make me irritated.
1. Slow focus, 1 in 3 shots would not have got focused, I notice this issue in pics with people, workaround is to wait additional second after it shows as focused, not always practical. This is probably biggest flaw of this phone. DxO remarks this in their review as well.
2. My earlier phone was nexus 5, OIS made the photos 99% of the time sharp and blur free. With G4 I have to keep my hands extremely steady in poor lighting.
3. I also find the images to be bit over sharpened, not a big deal though. Dynamic range is not that great either, has tendency to blow out sky and highlights.
4. Wide angle lens, didn't like this as objects seem to get curved across the edges of pic, this can and should have been fixed via post processing but moto decided to ignore it.
5. Finally the video recording with EIS is great but heats up the phone like crazy if shooting for long time.
For the price of phone I can forgive issue 2 and 3 but 1st one makes me hate the phone camera as I need to always check if it came out alright. Had I known it before I bought I would have skipped it.
Compared to phones in this price range though it's still decent and great when it works well. Most of the phone seems to have similar issues in this price range.

Pixel Camera port to 6p /5x similar HDR+ results?

I am curious if the Pixel camera ports to the 5x/6p which use apparently the same quality sensors will give similar HDR+ quality results as the Pixel cameras ?
I have reads speeds are faster with ports.........but are the photo quality results the same with 6p 5x........in HDR+ mode ........which is the default mode for Pixel cameras and the mode that gives the high quality photo quality. ..............compared to Pixel camera samples.

Just think a little bit. The hardware is not the same. How do you expect to have the same quality?

The most significant hardware difference is the phase detection af, which should only result in faster focus time in good lighting.
I have the app installed and the instant shutter with hdr+ is pretty awesome. Also no delay between taking multiple photos quickly. No post processing moving circle displayed after snapping photo.
I think one reason it feels quicker is it will allow you to take the photo before af locks, so there is no delay when hitting the shutter.

More or less the same quality, could be that the isp can't handle the same amount of pics (9 in good light) as the 821. But mostly the same quality I think. I have had the Pixel and a 6P at the same time. The pixel has way better battery and smoothness thought. But that's what you suppose to get from another 500€ [emoji33]

Outside of sensor quality, and I know sensor is generally the biggest differnce, but what really sets photo quality apart in latest flagship phones is image 'processing'.......that is actually what most significantly sets most phone cameras from one another.....................not particularly hardware.
It is possible last gen google cameras use the same base sensor, where the pixel sensor may use some added circuity to allow faster capturing............to make it more "optimized' for certain algorithms and techniques with regard to SPEED.
But it is possible to apply the same algorithm (processing) to older sensor output which could be the same. ......although maybe slower.
