When I download files they are stored automatically to the internal storage, is there a way to download files to my external SD card automatically?
Haven't received my phone yet so I can't answer your question directly but you could use Redirect (Pro) from Play Store to move and sort them after they are downloaded

The SD card is NOT for read/write access in this phone. Its solely for pics you may already have on the card and or stored music. Once you put the sd card in the phone allows you to save any new pics and videos to SD card. Unless you root, you cannot use the sd card the way you're trying to use it.

Not quite true, speaking for the global model, go into settings , then applications followed by application manager, tap on the application you want to move, then tap on storage and finally you will see the change dialogue. This will give you the option to move to sd
Sorry im only speaking of the us model with snapdragon 820.

Hmmm, thanks for the awnsers, I have Exynos btw, yeah moving apps is an option but might slow down the performance.
I actually mean downloading files from internet, onedrive etc. everytime I download documents and images I have to move them manually to my SD card. That's a pity, but I have to deal with it or use a third party app.
I'm using the Canadian carriers snapdragon 820 and can move some, not all app data to sd card.
Settings, storage, used, apps.
For the most part the larger apps will allow me to move data to sd card

Yeah, I might try that, I have a fast SD (Samsung pro +) and I see no need to remove my SD card.

I have always used "gallery" to view pictures that I have stored on my external micro SD card. This new ATT galaxyS4 doesn't allow it. It only displays pictures that are stored on the internal SD card.
I got root and use an app called "root explorer" is the only way to view the pictures I have stored, which is ok but there is no slide show function in root explorer.
I postponed the update that came in over the airwaves, but it processed last night while asleep. I don't see any difference except it's not rooted anymore. Gallery is still limited to viewing only the onboard chip that's full of bloatware.
Does anyone else notice gallery not seeing the external SD?

Storage and reading of the external SD card for pictures works great for me.
One thing to note if you are having problems with the gallery, is to reformat the SDCard in the phone.
I was getting laggy gallery images, and a high battery drain from the Gallery.
Reformatting the SD card cleared up all my problems!
When you open gallery, hit menu and content to display. Make sure all is selected.

If you use stock browser anything downloaded will go to external sd. Camera also asks you to save pictures on external sd when inserted, if not it can be changed in camera settings.

I stuck a different 32 gb class 10 microSD chip in the external memory slot and gallery started working finally.
So I assume the chip I've always used needs formatting sounds like.
Thank you for the feedback.
I have a similar issue as OP. I have a 64gb Sandisk SDXC, and it came straight over from the S3 and the S4 gallery didn't see my pix from the card either nor the music player see all my music. I have to format the card in the phone then copy everything over from pc to phone via usb for the gallery and music player to see what's on my ext card. Then the phone restarted by itself, and it says the sd card is damaged, then the OTA update came just in time, updated, amd magically the Sd card was fixed, now it only see select videos and images and still none of my music. If it's in the inter sd then it's fine.

It sure sounds like it. My chip still works, all I did was use the computer to format it.
The only way to tell is get another chip and put some files on it for a test.
It ticks me off they don't even populate the external SD slot with a cheap chip like they used to. ATT phones used to come with a one or two gigabyte capacity bottom dollar chip for free but alas they got even more greedy!

I used foldermount and moved the DCIM folder to the external sd, so all the setting have it looking at the mounted folder on the internal card, even the burst shots are stored right onto the external. the longer I've had foldermount, the happier i am with it. endless possibilities!
Not sure if the camera app has the option to save to sd card. Or do we have to manually do it ourselves.

I was about to create a thread. Since I have seen this thread similar to what I wanted to post, I am sharing how I am using external SD to save images taken using Google Camera.
It is very simple and easy using the app Foldersync (I am using pro version to have unlimited folder pairing).
Here is the play store link for Lite version LINK
Use of this app is mainly to transfer files to cloud server but does the job to copy / move from internal memory to external SDcard.
You can see sample screenshot attached.
Yes, you can save pictures to the SD card directly from the stock camera app. If you bring out the side menu while in the viewfinder, scroll down and you'll see a little SD card icon. Tap that, and choose SD card instead of internal storage.
No need for a third party app.

The question was how to push images taken from Google camera in to external sdcard without manual copying process from folder to folder. Also, it can be used to move any periodical update on to internal memory to external sdcard (eg. anything downloaded which saves in to internal memory under Download folder).

I didn't see "Google Camera" anywhere in the original question. I just see this:
Subject: Can the camera app save pics to SDcard?

In this case, my directions are what the OP needs to do in order to save photos directly to the SD card.

If you are using adaptive storage for your SD card, which it sounds as if you are, then you will not get the option on the camera app. Adaptive storage makes the SD card essentially like an extension of your internal storage therefore recognizes only internal storage. There are no other storage options to choose from.

It sounds like you are using adoptive storage on your SD card. I use adoptive storage and don't have any issues with it, the camera does save to the SD card for me and I do not have the option to change that in the camera app since the system shows the card as internal storage. So like aybarrap1 said, you will not see the option in the camera app.
The other issues you are having are strange. I suppose your card could be going bad. Do you have a fast card? Perhaps it is too slow and that is why you are having issues with apps saved to it.
Slow cards could cause apps to be flaky. I personally don't use adoptive storage yet. Waiting on the fast cards (90+ read and write speeds) to hopefully come down in price. Since internal storage is not an issue for me ATM, I'm not really stressing it.
I also using adoptive sd card but pics and videos are being saved in internal memory instead external ,actually I don't understand this new feature I still have 2 different memory internal and external, even I'm running out of memory help please
PS I have a 64gb Samsung card so is not slow is the one that came with my s7 edge I'm guessing is good speed

Oh that was SO the right answer. Thank you!
My Moto X Pure does not show the option to save on SD card either. I have all the other options in the user manual except the SD card. It runs Android 6.0 and uses SanDisk Extreme PLUS microSDXC UHS-1 64 Gb card.
So i noticed recently that while many games and apps i download can be moved to the sd card no problem (riptide 2 for example), there are dozens of big applications that don't seem to have the option to be move (GrooVR for example).
I have a 200gb sd card and only 32gb internal storage so i was hoping to move a LOT more stuff to the external storage. I don't understand why some apps can't be moved. Anyone else experienced this? Is partitioning the card and using adaptive storage the only true way to free up internal space?
I think that may be our only solution without root. I noticed too that some large apps will allow to move to SD card but it doesn't move all the data, it only moved around 125mb and left well over a gig in the internal. Doest work as good as it should imo.

Apps to SD or Adoptable Storage... I'm torn. My 200GB card should be here tomorrow and I'm not sure how I want it set up just yet. I'm assuming the adoptable option is able to keep more on the card... can anyone verify this though? Searching the forum hasn't helped much.
Just be sure your card has a fast write speed if you're gonna use adoptable storage. Or else there will be slow down on some apps.
I've tried this before but since went back. But im gonna try adoptable again with a 128gb Evo pro plus sd card. It wont be as fast as Samsung internal speeds of course but if its not too bad I'll post an update. I plan on trying it out with some large games.

Its a good card. Sandisk deal on amazon few weeks back. But does anyone know why i can't move certain non-system apps to sd via settings?
If the issue is write speeds for things like recording video and transferring media files to the phone for playback I'm not concerned. Don't mind waiting to copy files and don't really record video (ever). Now if playback is a big issue (the part I'm not sure about as most reviews hit primarily on write speed concerns) then I'll stick to the old Apps to SD methodology. I'd just like something more seamless and more consistent.
I haven't looked into it yet, but is it a pain to "divorce" a card? Do you pretty much end up resetting everything?

I may be wrong or things may have changed, but initially when this function was introduced the developer had to specifically set a flag that the app was allowed to be moved. Hence the introduction of some utilities which boasted moving even incompatible apps to SD.

Well, i maybe know how to move apps(not including system apps) to sd. Most of phones have developer options (if you dont know what is it, u can open it by going to settings, click on about phone, and click 10 on "build number" and then it will be unlocked), in developer options scroll down and look if you have "force allow move to sdcard/external".

Just out of curiosity why would you need it? SD cards slow down the performance of apps when using adorable storage and this device has 64gb of storage. All you need is a card to store your pics and media on then you'll have plenty of space for apps.
Exactly. There is no need. It would be so sluggish and a waste of the 64gb.
Would it be beneficial to store, let's say, downloaded music from Google Play and Spotify? One of the main reasons I'm upgrading is because my 6P only has 32gb and most of it is downloaded music.
Edit: Nevermind, just found the in-app setting for save location.
You can force install's to the sdcard in nougat, the option is in developer options in the s7 so most likely in the s8 too.

Due to write limitations on SD card. Not all applications will be able to use it (require special coding). It is an Android limitation (Android 5.0 and above)
In my case, I sync my files with my PC with an app called Syncme. Syncme can not write on SD card. Folder Sync will do the job but is very very slow (200 KB/s compared with 2-3 MB/s using Syncme). I sync a lot of files, around 140 GB (docs, video, audio,...) So speed syncing is important for me.
With adoptable storage you can choose where your apps will be installed (internal or external storage). So no issue with performance.
Enviado desde mi SM-G930F mediante Tapatalk
That's not true. The internal storage used on the S8 is faster than any micro SD card currently.
All media and documents can be installed on a micro sd card without the need to convert it to adoptable storage. If your app doesn't allow moving to SD then find another option.
Obviously it's your call if you don't mind a slightly slower phone.

Read my post again: with adoptable storage you can choose where your apps will be stored: internal or sd. Sure internal memory is faster: I would prefiere 256 gb of internal storage. Micro SD is.....a solution for cheap smartphones in my opinion.
You do not like adoptable storage? No problem. Don't use it. My concern is that if Google implemented that option in Android why Samsung (and others) do actively disable it. I would prefer to be able to choose by myself.

The only way is to activate adoptable storage.

Given these phones have an emulated SD card, whatsapp should save to that unless I'm mistaken? Saving pics and videos to any other partition that doesn't have excess space doesn't sound feasible

Is anyone using their Nokia 6 with an SD card?
How does it work? well? Can you move pictures/videos/documents to the SD easily?
what size SD? micro?
Thanks!
I have a 200gb microSD card in my US Nokia 6. All my apps can read files on the card, but because I set it up as removeable storage instead of simulated internal storage (it asks you to choose after you insert the card), only apps that know to request special permission can write to the SD card. Most file managers I've tried can handle writing to it, other apps like text editors are more hit and miss.
I think if I had set it up differently it might work with more apps, but I was worried that would result in it being encrypted and getting cluttered with random data files from every app. If root is ever figured out with this phone then I should be able to have better control of which apps can write to the SD card.

Can it read more than 200gb? I'm thinking of shelling 256gb max but might go for 128gb or 200gb for sandisk as I have files need to be moved. I keep looking at websites that the phone can only support of upto 128gb. thank you
I'm using a class 10 32GB SanDisk SD card with mine and it runs smoothly. I can move a lot of files at once to it and expect transactions to be generally quick. Make sure to set it up as external media otherwise you'd simply be merging the card with your internal storage and won't be able to control what goes into your card.
