AFAIK, Sony's white balance option makes the display look darker the heavier you adjust it, at least that's how it is for my Xperia Z2 Tablet.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/best-screen-reviewers-best-screen-t2911814
Various reviews have indicated that the official word from Sony is that the 10k is intentional because that tested best with focus groups (display was assessed as "brighter" and "more vivid"). Given the way Triluminos displays work (the backlight is blue, not white), the brightness increase at high color temps may be more than just perceptual.
Keep in mind that the average smartphone consumer couldn't explain color temperature if their life depended on it. They look at the device next to others at a brick-and-mortar wireless carrier store or kiosk and the "brightest" one (regardless of how inaccurate) will usually be selected as having the "best" display. At least Sony provides a way to get back to something a little more sane (without having to root the phone).

The vast majority of people don't like oversaturation and distortion. I don't know what crazy focus groups have Sony.
Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG etc every year aspire to natural and correct color. And I agree with them. Sony need to dismiss his crazy focus group.
Although, I think there was no focus groups, they just wanted to increase the brightness of the screen and at the same time to probe the market, how color reproduction is important to people
When you raise all value too high, brightness will be decrease. I've never change Blue, a bit Green, mainly Red.

It would be better if they offered various presets in the settings. This one could be called "Energy efficient superbright" (or some other snazzy marketing name), with the ability to also select a preset called "accurate".

Got a study to back that up? In a Leichtman Research Group study a few years ago, 18% of HDTV owners couldn't tell the difference between SD and HD. So I find it hard to believe that more than 50% of smartphone owners have any clue about color accuracy.
Case in point, walk into any big box consumer electronics store and look at the TVs on display. Nearly all of them have the brightness and saturation cranked up ridiculously high. Why? Because it sells TVs. At a glance, everything seems much more "vivid" than the shopper's current TV and that creates incentive to buy.

Yes, and that's admirable. I'm not defending Sony's approach. You asked "why?" and I provided the answer. Sony is struggling in the worldwide smartphone market compared to the OEMs you listed, so you have to expect them to try some "different" approaches. Yes, it would be nice if they provided a settings preset to get back to a 6500K calibration. Perhaps we need a thread where people with calibration hardware can post their properly calibrated settings?

Same with smartphone cameras, often the colors seem to be way off because it looks more vivid and that's what people want.
See Z3C vs S5 here for example.

Is it that bad because I'am really interested in buying this phone. Please give me more details.
It would be bad if you had to root to change white balance, however Sony have thoughtfully provided a way to do it via settings that's fine.
There are other threads with suggested settings, and I've found a moderate change of R 40 G 72 to be perfectly satisfactory.
This is a non issue thread.

Except as has been established for a long time now, this option *doesn't* allow you to change the white balance, regardless of what Sony decided to call it for marketing reasons. It just overlays an RGB color filter over your screen - which is why it darkens the screen when you set sliders to max. Setting white point shouldn't have this effect at all. It doesn't even express color temperature options properly. Color accuracy isn't improved.
What you're seeing is only a lazy approximation of white balance adjustment, so yes this is very much a live issue.
As I said, my moderate change of +40 R & + 72 G *fixed* any issues I had, can't say I've noticed my screen going darker. Clearly if you're going to slam all the sliders over to MAX then it'll suffer. The point I'm making is that if you can adjust the white balance effectively for a small adjustment, Sony didn't get it that wrong, and even if they did, they provided a method to adjust it back to *correctiveness* in any case.
Now.
If the colour was obviously bad out of the box, and there was no way at all to correct it using any method, or you needed to root to fix it, then that WOULD have been an issue and I'd have been butt hurt too, however as this isn't the case I'm not, and it's a non issue.
I hadn't been paying a whole lot of attention since upgrading the other day but then I laid the phone next to my wife's S5 and maybe I'm imagining things but the screen on the Moto X feels a lot less warm than it did a week ago when compared to the much cooler toned Galaxy S5. Am I wrong here?

I just saw a display unit at a verizon store and my thoughts were exactly the same as yours !?!? I saw the same display units at the same verizon store a month or so ago with kitkat and the super saturated screen was the first thought that came to my mind - this was the first time I checked it out and that was a deal breaker for me.
But this second visit has gotten me thinking, so much so that I googled it up and came across your post. Have you had a chance to compare/analyze it more ? I had to open the play store on the moto x AND Htc One to reconfirm the saturation ! But definitely looked less saturated as compared to the Nexus 6 I recently saw.
Anybody else - any feedback ?
Sure has. The colors seem a lot more contrasty and punchy! Whites are also slightly better. It closely matches the nexus 6 screen now, looks wonderful!

I was actually suggesting the opposite - the Nexus 6 is super saturated ~ poor screen calibration. The Moto X was similar but as @WilliamRBR also suggested it seems the screen calibration may have been tweaked in the lollipop update thus resulting in less of the super saturated unreal colors and more closer to the Note 4 calibration ~ which is quiet good.
Screen calibration is better on lollipop, a lot less saturated.

Fantastic ! So its just not me then Hopefully more users can chime in
It's so good I'm just loving it
Glad to hear this!
I didn't notice any difference.
Serious? It's more than noticeable! Just open the play store and look at the red, green etc... No more flashy.
For me it's still oversaturated and incorrectly calibrated, especially when comparing to Nexus 5.
I have owned this device for about two months now. To be honest, I did notice that, a few days before the Lollipop update (wich happened last week to me), the colors seemed more satured than the usual. I concluded (wrongly?) it had to do with the ageing of the screen.
But even after the update I feel the colors are still as satured as they were in KK (wich I find pretty nice).
Or maybe my eyes are not so great anymore.
Quiet a mixed bag here, maybe M8 is the way to go given the comparable cameras but with extra battery and nicer screen. Thank you all for sharing your inputs here though.
I actually really like the "oversaturated" colors, and would prefer it to at least be an option to set the saturation/calibration level. The main reason I love OLED so much is because of this, and I hope they wouldn't force a change like that in the update. Something like the Samsung calibration menu would be nice.

oh yeah if motorola had display options like samsung provides - essentially different levels of saturation - THAT WOULD BE AWESOME !!! Everyone of us can have their desired levels of oomph and punch or the lack of
It looks exactly the same, but is a beautiful screen regardless.
Mine is too warm... That is the only issue that I have with it and have to use calibration app to make it cooler

Which app?
Does the camera autofocus correctly during video capture in the Lollipop?
My Moto X 2 has Kitkat and doesn't autofocus during video captures. It acts same like fixed focus came of Moto E, though autofocus works perfectly fine during photo capture. I have tried lot of third party camera apps, cleared cache as suggested by moto care but still no solution
Now I am badly missing my old and gold Atrix 2 badly, thankfully that is still at home but no more mine.
I have heard that le pro 3 has some display issue.... First of all the screen mute Ness the screen colour accuracy is not true to life and cold colours and second of all the touch latency it's something to notice I think that is it's EUI's fault.
Please some clarity my doubts
Depends partly on rom
Hello, I have not read before about general display / touchscreen issues, but I have used 3 custom roms (and of course stock) in my time with this phone yet and can say that there is a noticeable difference in how it reacts depending on what the developer worked out. That said, I have to stress that every part of this phone so far feels and works as you would expect from a state of the art phone. Alright, beside the camera, that's close to crappy , but the rest is great. My comparison "group" so far is LG G4, Samsung S7 edge (yeah, that screen image quality is unbeaten, but it's all very close i would say) and Sony Xperia and the Leeco Pro 3 with for example Turbo Rom is snappier than all of them. There is definitly no lag or something like that.
Looking just at image quality, I mean, there are ways to adjust color and brightness, so you can set up what you like - I didnt look for color settings since it looks "normal" andbrightness is on auto adjust, it's always, even in direct sunlight, perfectly readable. A resolution beyond full hd in 5,5 inches is imo useless if your not going for VR stuff - so really, if you are looking for weaknesses on that phone, it's not the screen. Yes, I became a bit of a fanboy from using it .

Using custom official ROM like Lineage OS will fix the display latency/response time and colour mute Ness....?? Colours are not accurate on EUI
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "colors are not accurate" - as said, there are several possibilities of adjusting colors to your liking (there are apps for everything , some custom roms already include automatic night modes with less blue in it etc.
Regarding input lag, there simply is none whatsoever, this phone reacts blazing fast. I experienced some misinterpreted swipes taken as clicks in the first official lineage build, but that has been fixed with yesterday's update.
Despite the lower average camera, this phone is really good.

Actually it's camera is good it's software optimisation is really bad it has the same Sony imx 298 sensor which OnePlus 3t,mi5 and LG V20 has (excluding OIS) pictures from the rare camera should be great...
And one more thing is that though the camera take good shot you will not be able to enjoy it on the screen of the phone as it's mute colours....Just do one thing pull out the images from your mobile and copy it to computer and see it.
I debt you will see the difference between it colours with be more saturated and pops out that in phone
I heard the same thing from others in this forum - both the "sensor is same as xy, should be great" and "the pictures suck, no matter which camera app". All my pictures go to my pc via Onedrive and they are definitely worse than those of my previous Lg G4 or the oneplus 3t which my cousin took currently on a US visit and sent pics from or those my wife's xperia x compact takes. But it doesn't mean they are horrible. Just not "premium". And I don't care if it's hardware or software.
Back to the screen, I saw a friend of mine today owning a galaxy s7 edge. And yes, that screen is better. Although you can't count pixels on either display, I can see that that just by looking at it. But the difference is not that big, definitely a lot smaller than, just as an example, the pictures of the darn camera .
One question for me: What's your "point"? Do you have the phone and experience display issues? I would say that your either oversensitive or your device is flawed. Do you think about buying it and are worried about the screen? Then I would say don't worry.
Which is it?
Actually I'm going to buy it....saw some of the review on YouTube(Android Authority &pocketnow daily)they stated that its display is having a problem as it's colours is not punchier and vivid.So.....I created a Xda thread so that I can talk to people who own the device in real life day-to-day experience

Good choice . I think the criticism of "unpunchy" colors is just as common with LCD - Displays as criticism of too punchy colors on amoled.
I mean, buying this phone almost forces you to dig into TWRP and custom roms... So it's nothing for, e. g., my wife . But since you are here already, I bet you will be happy with it. In retrospect I could have saved a few bucks by not choosing the 6 / 64 GB Version - I use the second sim slot for a data only LTE 3 gb card for monthly 7 € and now stream everything. 54 gb free space ^^ and ram always more than 3 gb free...
ZTE axon 7 is also a competitive phone compared to le pro3.... The only problem with ZTE axon 7 is it's camera it preform really poorly is low light, but in good lighting it performs really well

It certainly is, had it on my list for quite some time as well. And I bet 50 bucks that the camera beats leecos in every condition . But my main focus was battery life and, coming from the LG G4, I found it nonsense to go for more than Full HD on devices smaller than 7 inches - on 5,5, even fhd is far beyond "retina" and since I won't strap the phone to my face VR style, it's just wasted energy pushing the extra pixels.
Add the smaller battery, the (slightly) older soc, less ram and all of that for about 70 € more (64gb versions), made it easy for me.
One thing to say leeco's design language is very impressive and glossy
Any news when le pro3 is getting nougat update... Where as ZTE axon 7 and OnePlus 3T already got 7.1.1 update
Hello there , right now I have 6s Plus, before that I had s7 edge so I know there was some bugs related with Samsung.. I wanna the truth from you tell me if there is any bug , any , and the minimal.. I heard something about the red color on the screen and Sam released an updated to fix that, is it true ? Does it fixed ? Any other bugs ? Please tell me the truth because I am gonna spend a lot of money
It's a great device. There is a red heavy color scheme by default but you can adjust colors manually if you want in the display setting ...I use basic profile. Perfect for me.
I had the s7 edge and this one had much smoother sides/ corners and no home button which is where mys7edge decided to crack the screen.
Battery is really good for me on latest oreo... maybe just a little worse than s7edge but its 500mah less so the is that
Otherwise youwill have to decide...lol
Opinions are like assholes.... everyone has one....

Yeah for sure. Flesh tones are perfect now etc. You can even adjust the manual red yellow blue colors tho..
I don't know of any "bugs" really.
There is even an equalizer...although I do miss viper.
I don't want to root yet.....
So you have noticed the red color on your screen too ?
I got mine and no red is seeping in so it looks like that issue was fixed in software rather then being a hardware.
Seems their adaptive display software wasn't taking into account just how good the amoled displays where and this has since been fixed.
Otherwise a very solid device although if you get one also get a case with it as the glass can be rather slick on these big screen devices.
Battery great which i had the unfortunate job of testing at the hospital (never needs to charge it after 7 hours).
The US models like the 950U of course do have a locked bootloader which is annoying but not the end of the world.

I have MS and was exposed to the flu at some point during the weekend.
Although i never actually got the flu my MS went nuts and started messing with my left lung.
It filled with crap and i started having a very hard time breathing.
Once ambulance ride later and i found out my resting heart rate was over 120 and my oxygen levels were in the 80's.
Of course one tends to use their phone a lot during these times and i only got to 69% after heave texting and phone calls.
The s8 are very good phones and though not perfect as none are it comes close to being the best you can get .
I baught it , i dont see any bugs yet but its too small lol .. compared with s7 edge i fell it on my hand very small, but its lighter
Does give the appearance of being small since its so slim but that a lot of screen.
The s7 edge was only 5.5 inches in terms of display yet the s8 is 5.8 and you swear its thinner but its actually 3 mm thicker
It is 3mm less wide though since they effectively did away with the the basel.
So you got more screen at a lighter weight.
There is also the 8+ which is just bigger period but at 6.2 inches it feels more like a phablet to me.
Its weird how we gotten use to that basel and having it gone makes things seem smaller when they are not lol.

It all depends on where you are since oero only started rolling out again last week .
Depending on the model its available here https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development
Given you area you likely got one of the international models so the official update in the forums is likely the same as your model type.
I just wonder which programmer thought it was funny to give the update the last four letter spelling crap. lol.

I need a replacement phone. the A1 has been good but the battery life is now no good. Also, the screen brightness is very low. I am not complaining it has a been a good phone.
I would like a new Android one phone. The A3 would have been good for the 720 screen is a let down. Two questions:
Can anyone recommend a good Android One phone?
Has anyone made the change to Redmi phone after Android One. Is the redmi UI okay to live with or is it a pain?
I would go for a Mi 9T or the Oneplus 7T. Without a budget it's kinda hard to help you out.
The MIUI seems ok for me although I prefer stock Android. I don't know Redmi UI.
Also, I've read that the A3 screen it's not a big let down for those who came from the Mi A1 - also, it's brighter.
I'm thinking about buying the Mi A3, it's just a little bit better than the Mi A1 (but I don't care, never experienced any lag in any app), and it should have almost twice battery time, charge twice faster, more photo capabilities, more system updates (soon android one 10), and it's cheap !
My next phone needs to be 5G ready it will either be the A3 (version 2) or more likely the A4 next year.

Thanks, I have no real budget but I am loath to spend more than about the price of an MI A3 or similar ($250 US) on something I know I will ditch in about 18 months because the battery life diminishes or I break it of lost or whatever.
I saw the MI9T but I can't justify the price and the gimick selfie camera goes against what I look for. I don't want something that has a motor that can break, or get jammed. But that did lead me to the Mi 9 Lite which is about the right pricepoint and ticks most of the boxes I need. It also has the bonus of being able to accept and A/B slot rom if something stable arrives to load on it. So thanks for the tip.
The other phone I saw was the Redmi Note 8 and that looked okay, but seems to only have BT4.2, will be a little more battery hungry with the IPS screen. It also lacks the NFC option. But I still might get it.
If anyone has knowledge of some decent phones in the price range with decent camera and battery that will accept an AOSP or similar Rom and is likely to get a quality ROM soonish, please let me know your thoughts.
I replaced the battery and it is working well after that. I think my A1 will last me another year or 2.

If it was just the battery, I would probably do the same as you, but unfortunately, it will just be more simple to get a new phone.

Regarding the warm hue, you have confirmed you did not turn on Night Light ya? Night light reduces the blue light and it is more pleasant to the eyes.
And regarding brightness, I saw a comment in the thread below mentioning that between Oreo and Pie, somehow Oreo has a better max brightness than Pie.

I did not try downgrading it to Oreo myself but I also remember the brightness issue I encountered after a certain upgrade.
I used to set brightness at about 30% but after that certain upgrade, I had to now crank it up to 70% at the brightness slider while using the phone indoor.
My wifes mi a3 arrived yesterday and I must say for the money it's a little beauty. Feels solid. 720p doesn't really matter and does not bother.
Phone is fast enough for daily usage and gaming. Battery life is great. The camera makes good photos too.
Not bad for 140 bucks !

Thanks for the insights and thoughts. I did consider the Night Light but that is confirmed switched off. I went out and had a look at a few phones last night but I really didn't see anything stand out that made me want it.
I might try an AOSP ROM on the A1 to see if that helps screen. Maybe that can get me through until the next round of phones come out.
Try replacing the BN31 battery. ~$10 only

I'm using my MiA1 since September 14, 2017. The battery's BN31. My MiA1's battery capacity (true) is still ~2800mAh, 90% of promised/original. I've been using 5-85% charging/discharging or better 10-80%, always charging with back-cover up and radiating in Fan/ A/C air to keep temperature < 40 dC.
The Battery BN31 IS REPLACABLE. You can get on Amazon/ Alibaba/ Flipcart/ many more. The price is ~$10.00.
I'm using Android 8.1.0 (Most Stable) un-updated since November 2018 when the choice was to Update to Android 9.0 (and probably get ruined) or REJECT Android 9.
For the last 1 year I faced NO problems. No Need for so called endless Security Updates etc (which is a racket to keep you on tenterhooks).
In fact, my MiA1 is better than NEW, except for some scratches.
I expect it'll be Good Enough for the next TWO YEARS!!
If at all, I'll get a New Phone (Top Range) as an additional one.
