Thinking about purchasing but worried about battery... your opinions? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am considering purchasing a moto x pure edition because it can move to any carrier. This is the main reason I was considering this phone. The second and equally important reason is battery life. My current phone is a galaxy s4 active. The battery doesn't get me through the day at work (10 hours) with moderate use (4 hours screen time). This has annoyed me greatly. Unfortunately, I cannot have it charging at work so the phone needs to make it with ease through the day. I do not have wifi available so all activity will be through 4glte with 3/5 signal. I realize one of the complaints with the phone is battery life. My question is, if I root/unlock bl (which I do with every device), are there kernels that anyone here is running that can undervolt and get me that all day battery life out of this thing? I really don't want to buy it and be back in the same boat again. Unfortunately, the gs4a i had was never boot loader unlocked so i'm stuck on crappy touchwiz with stock kernel. It performs fine but battery life stinks. If I buy this phone, will i be dissapointed? Thanks to everyone for your responses.

You shouldn't have any problem hitting 4hrs SOT in 10 hours off the charger. I never have to charge this thing at work. I leave the house at 5am and don't plug it in until about 9pm.

I just got my moto x pure two days ago. I came from using an S4 active which I still have. The turbo charing helps with the moto x. I'm still getting use to setting up my moto x the way I want it. You learn from trial and error. The main thing for me is that I want to make sure I can return to stock regardless of what happens to my phone.

Thanks so much for the reply! This is exactly the info I'm looking for. Some questions though, how much are you on in it and how much are you using wifi during that time? Also, are you on a custom kernel/rom?

I range from 3-5 hours of screen on time depending on my usage. If I'm at the 3 hr end, then I usually make it off the charger from 5am-9pm range with a bit of life left. If I'm at the 5 hr end I'll have to charge a decent amount sooner (maybe 5am-6pm) but it's still a full day's use. I've run completely stock and I've tried a few different Roms and Kernels...I've never seen a huge difference in battery life though.

5 hs.of SOT, 12 hs without a charger ( not in the first week of use) you need a minimal of 5 charge/discharge cycles
Its a excellent phone !! (sorry for my english)

I just got my Moto XPE too. Battery life was one of my biggest concerns. I came from a moto e (that little thing had ridiculous battery life). I was worried because of all the complaints of short battery life but I can tell you this:
When I first used the phone (no root, mods, out anything) I got around 4 hours sot pretty easily. That's a little short for me but it isn't terrible. The phone got really warm though and I felt as if it was unoptimized and the CPU was doing more work than it needed to.
I proceeded to void my warranty and unlock the bootloader. First I did a little research on these big.LITTLE cpus then i used a (well pretty much the only established one) custom kernel, Frankenclark, to do a little tweaking.
All I did was turn touchboost off and make the lowest CPU frequency one step lower, as well as turning hotplug to where the screen on minimum CPU count is 1. There was basically no loss in performance and it doesn't even get as much as warm now. I can't give you stats on the long term battery life yet but in the time that I wrote this I only lost 2% ( I type slow ).
Before both the big and LITTLE CPU clusters were showing on and pretty much going crazy all the time. Now the big cluster is hardly ever on. The phone by default has touchboost set to turn on cpu1 (which is one of 2 cores in the big cluster) every time you touch the screen, which is very wasteful. (At least that's how it was with this kernel, I'm pretty sure stock did the same thing) I'm currently running TruPureX ROM (stock debloated) but I doubt it gives any battery life improvements. Motorola made a good stock rom. I really like this phone. Good luck with your purchase! PS the Nexus 6p has generally better battery life if you can live with no sdcard and the steeper price. The 6p can also move between carriers as the XPE can. Verizon included which is what I use.
[Edit]
When you put this thing down, you can expect to pick it back up with the same battery % left. Standby is ridiculous, which is nice.

^^Does your screen on setting of 1 cpu stick? On mine with kernel editor it reverts back to 2 after a reboot.

I think I remember it's a bug where it will stick if the screen is on while kernel adiutor is restoring the settings but it will revert to 2 cores if the screen is off while it's restoring. Don't quote me on it but I think that's what it was.

If I set it 1 6 1 (min screen on cores: 1, max cores : 6, max screen off cores 1), the phone will reboot if I don't allow kernel auditor to apply the settings while screen is still on (after a reboot). That is, after phone reboots, if screen goes blank, when I hit the power button, phone will reboot on its own.
Probably not a major issue considering I only reboot about once every week or two. I can make sure I watch the cycle and unlock it, wait for everything to settle, then turn off the screen.

Guess what I just got? someone on eBay was selling the 64gb for 300 bucks in mint condition! Just can't beat it. Thanks to everyone for info and suggestions along the way. Any recommendations on cases and screen protectors? I've always like seidio for cases and whatever is highly rated on @maz0n for screen protectors but any advice would be appreciated!

I have seidio case and holster, I think they only sell one for it, and I love it.

Ultimately I wound up getting a vena vskin that's see through. I really love it. Only problem is the back is curved life the phone so using it on a table with one hand swiping for SwiftKey makes it spin.

Battery Life Since 4.4.2

I only had mine a week or so before the upgrade, but I would say it's definitely taken a hit. Now, screen is not always the biggest power consumer like it used to be. Android OS and Android System are taking a much bigger portion of the power than they used to. I always reboot the phone if something other than screen is monopolizing the battery.
Also, I heard there's a Qualcomm-specific bug related to powering the cameras, and that it's been a particular issue with the latest Skype builds.
I worry that they'll fix these issues quickly in the Android project but it'll take months for me to see the fix from Verizon, by which point my battery will have been subjected a lot of unnecessary heat and wear.
Tonnes of android os talk in this thread. Or try Googling it.
Basically, the more services you have on and apps syncing, the higher it gets. For experimentation .....disable sync, location, Google now and Amy other service you can find, and usually android os goes way down. Decide what's important to you and enable things again....but do like one change a day. And when your android os skyrockets again....you'll know the last thing you enabled is the main culprit.
Anyway.....a pile of battery tips in here, and android os talk. Take some time and read through some. Maybe start at last page and go back as far as you can.

Thanks, but I didn't really have to add anything except 4.4.2. The increased battery draw was pretty obvious after I applied the OTA. Since the upgrade, this phone doesn't have anywhere near the life that it once had. And even after the bugs that are draining it are addressed how long will it take to get the fix through Verizon?

Trust me, you can fix it now....if you try. Just gotta troubleshoot.
Many have no such bugs....or they've disabled whatever has wrecked their battery.
Just gotta put in some time and your issues can be fixed.

I seem to be one of the few that's matching my Moto x's battery life on my N5.
Not sure why some have such bad battery life on either phone sometimes, I can only assume its app related and very hard to pin down.

I have noticed no appreciable change in battery life on any of the builds that the phone has had since I got it in December. Some days it is excellent, the next day, the wind blows the other direction (literally and figuratively) and the battery life is terrible with no change in usage or where my phone spends most of its time.
I had the Android OS bug after the OTA. I reflashed the stock firmware in fastboot and now it's gone back down to a more manageable level.

I actually had slightly better battery life on my Nexus5. I still haven't passed 7+ hours screen time on the MotoX. I did it multiple times with the Nexus5. Although I think the Nexus5 has some tech to save battery while reading or screen is still. It still wasn't enough to make me choose it over the awesomeness that is the MotoX. Although I do miss that raw power every so often.
I too have had the random drain issue. It's definitely app related and since I reset and have stopped installing outdated apps I've been fine.

The issues are with apps that have not been updated since kit kat. I've since removed such apps and have been enjoying much better battery life.

Installed ds battery saver. And let discharge overnight. Gsam reported a 2%/hr discharge. I had some apps not be shutoff
Install a xposed module appopsx or find a app on the play store if you don't have xposed. 4.4.2 requires root.
It's the built in permissions management. You can disable location for what app for example. It shows you what app is using that permission and how long ago it used it.

I unlocked and finally upgraded to 4.4.2 on Tuesday the 18th. I had a four day weekend and was on my phone A LOT (because I wasn't at work), so I wouldn't consider it normal usage to compare with. I'm waiting patiently for my averages to level off now that I'm back at work and on normal patterns again.
Before I wiped I took a screenshot of my averages according to GSAM, and it was showing 15h7m (7h42m active) average battery life, with 5h3m (7h12m max) screen on time.
I am currently a little below that, 12h20m (7h33m active) average battery life, with 5h28m (5h17m max) SoT. I was on my phone basically all day Friday-Sunday and had it on and off the charger. I haven't really had a full cycle of waking up, using the phone all day, and going to bed yet.
The apps I am running now are almost all identical. I actually removed 2-3 of them after finding that Gravity Box could emulate the features of standalone apps that I was using.
I am not using Greenify (I didn't see any substantial gain from it), but I do have the Snapdragon Battery Guru.
Overall, I don't think it's worse.
This was my drain while I slept last night. That's even better than I thought it was. 4.4.2 BTW. I'm pretty sure I don't have any apps installed that haven't been updated since Kit Kat came out.
Having updated applications makes a huge difference.

I have always wondered if touchless and active notifications were the ones to be blamed for the average 1%/h drain on standby but never did a test to try it out, until today
I charged my phone to 100%, turned off touchless controls and active notifications and let it rest through the night, when I woke up 5h and a half later (yes, I usually don't get much time of sleep), I was still on 100%, just I did when I had my N4
I guess these stuff take so much battery because they have to keep the phone "awake" all the time to recognize your voice and to know if your phone is upside down or in your pocket or whatever and as much as motorola made them separate CPUs to handle it with less battery consuptiom, they still take that 1%/h... Probably we would get a higher %/h if it wasn't for the 8 chip processor motorola came up with
Actually I even think that it has something/all to do with the high android OS usage that we get, and to be honest, I really don't mind getting 1%/h drain on standby overnight if I can wake up any time in the morning and ask to my phone to do almost anything I want or check my notifications without having to light up the whole screen, so I'm quite pleased with it

Great phone

So I just picked up a Nexus 6 and so far I am loving it.. But what bothers me is looking at all the negative stuff people are saying about it. Battery life, size, stuttering/ lag and so on. As of this message I have 2:10 screen on time with 56% battery left since I took it off the charger around 3 this morning..Clean ROM and Faux kernel is my setup. Coming from an M8 this is acceptable.. Front speakers are loud and clear.. Lag?? What lag.. In my eyes this phone is damn near perfect.. Does anybody feel the same way?
The only time I experience lag is with battery saver mode (obviously) and sometimes when I plug the phone in when the battery is at around 20% or less. The phone is extremely fast for me, and I love it so far. I normally get at least 3 hours of screen time, and it can last me 2 full days. One time I turned battery saver on when I had about 70% battery, and it lasted 5 hours of screen time. That was with me using GPS and data like crazy to get around New York (visited my bro in NY). I've compared the screen and speakers to a friends M8 and he likes my screen more. My speakers go louder but his are a bit clearer. The camera is amazing, especially with HDR!
I am with you. I am happy with size, performance, and battery. Awesome phone, in my opinion. Not sure how it could be better.
I think its a great phone also... Completely stock, no root... I can easily get 2 days on 1 charge and over 2 hours on screen time. Real world performance is more important to me then how long the screen is on....

Some say they get stutter on unlock and recents on custom kernels.
No complaints here, love it and happy with the size. No issues thus far from my usage.
This IS a big phone. I thought the Note 3 was big when I had it but this one takes the cake..lol
I need to try stock for a while. The first thing I did was start flashing custom stuff. Didn't even give ole google a chance.

I think the battery life is awesome on this phone. Currently at 75% after 12 hrs off charge & 1.5 hrs on screen. Usually, by the time I put it back on charge at 11pm, I'm at about 25% & 5.5-6hrs on screen. Can't complain about that.

That's my main issue on every custom kernel I've tried. They can be smoother than stock kernel in other areas, but all exhibit that damn unlock stutter.

No, I'm using cm12 & elementalx. But there's no real difference from stock for me as far as battery. I ran it bone stock for 3 weeks.
I've had the phone for almost 2 weeks now and am very happy with the performance of the phone. The phone is large and takes getting used to, but now every other phone seems like a toy compared to the nexus 6. I'm rooted on stock 5.0.1. Battery life is 4-5 on screen time, around 15-17 hours off the charger. Coming from a s4, camera is a big let down and that's about the only gripe I have with the Nexus 6. Overall still the best phone I've had in terms of the Android experience. Looking forward to future updates.
Coming from the Verizon Note 3 all I miss is the camera. The screen is not as good as the Note 4 but its not bad either. This is my first nexus device. The big screen and stock Android is what made me choose this device over the Note 4. I haven't encountered any issues. Loving the phone and all the Roms available. Its a flashaholics dream ☺
Quick question... OK.. This is my first Nexus device but I've been around since the froyo days with my Vibrant but I'm confused with the ROM choices... Aosp based and stock lollipop.. I thought stock android was Aosp. Just got the phone Monday so I really haven't had time to try out all the Roms seeing that is so many to choose from.
I'm happy with mine too. I was unsure about stepping up to a phone this large, but I've come to love the larger screen. I fractured my left wrist in October and even with the Nexus 5 certain operations proved difficult to complete one handed when it becomes mandatory. I knew going in this would be a two handed phone and I've adapted just fine. My only real complaint is ambient display needs work. I really like the concept, but after the first day I managed to place calls, perform searches and open web sites all without taking it out of my pocket. I don't particularly care for the placement of the buttons and the gradually increasing volume is a bit annoying. Battery life has been better than my Nexus 5 and worlds ahead of my 4. I love the speakers. The more serious complaints I've read I haven't personally experienced.
Best phone I've owned hands down.

I think the battery life is awesome on this phone. Currently at 75% after 12 hrs off charge & 1.5 hrs on screen. Usually, by the time I put it back on charge at 11pm, I'm at about 25% & 5.5-6hrs on screen. Can't complain about that.

Anyone returning the ZF2?

I was wondering if anyone is returning their phone after getting the US version, and having some issues with it, im thinking of sending it back to NewEgg.
What's the issues that you are facing?

If you've already done a reset, I think you should return yours. There should be no lag, Antutu should be around 48000, and screen on time at least 4 hours.
I'm facing some issue with my AZP 2 4GB Version.
1. Sim 1 4G Sim network goes in every mins. If i use 3G or 2G sim in Sim 1 slot it works fine. with 4G sim it gives an error as well Unfortunately, the process com.phone has stopped. Did factor reset. I was on firmware 2.15 when i did that. Yesterday i has=d upgraded to V2.17. need to test again with 4G sim. Is it the same or still had an isuse. If yes than i'll return the phone with cash back.
2. Circle Flip cover does not work. I have purchased it in Rs. 499 and after applying the cover, nothing happens.
3. 2 to 3 times a day i have an error Unfortunately, the process com.android.systemui has stopped
What should i do??
Help

Whats the solution to battery life and overheating during regular use (not on the charger)?
You realize your issues with heat build during charging are because of the fast-charge technology, right? Totally normal, as a ton of power is flowing into the phone. You can always use a slow charger to charge the phone while in use. You shouldn't have any heat build up during use when not also charging. I know I don't. The hottest the phone gets is slightly warm.

For overheating, use a different adapter if you have the 1.8 GHz version. Battery life, just get a third party battery saver and turn on airplane mode. That will save you a ton of battery. I did it for mine and the phone last from 6 A.M to 10 P.M.

Very dependent on ambient temperatures as well.
Anandtech has confirmed that the panel in the ZF2 is inefficient compared to competitors, so not much can be done about that aspect. Their analysis of the phone is in depth, as are their other reviews.
I would like to return mine because the battery is performing right under the Optimus G I owned. With 3000mAh I was looking forward to battery comparable to the G2. If the next OTA improves battery, then I'll keep the Asus.
"I'd Totally Hug You, If That Was Something I Did"
Dang, so the bad battery is a hardware related (screen tech) issue based on that review.

No offense, but I don't think that solution would work for me or other people who want to use the phone. Turning off all of the radios with AirPlane mode mades it a unless paperweight.

Yeah. The people from Anandtech are pretty good at evaluating devices. Also this would explain why the battery drains rapidly during use & barely when inactive. Battery life is very important to me, so a phone with a removable battery might be best.

One thing to keep in mind, is that though the display uses a lot of power, the Intel chip itself seems very efficient. Not only does it sleep well, but as is shown in the PCMark testing on the Anand website, it uses its power very efficiently. Thus, though the phone's maximum display on time is much lower than the other phones, its practical usage time is fairly similar. I get around 5 hours screen on time with 1-2 days of sleep time.

For me getting even 4hrs is requiring me to disable apps, use greenify to kill background apps, and use min brightness. I tried factory resets, so doing those over and over isn't improving my battery. Honestly I just want a new phone with the battery life of my G2, since development is slowing down for it.
"I'd Totally Hug You, If That Was Something I Did"
Now hold on guys. Even if this phone has some battery issues, we can all still say that this phone is very acceptable. Right?

Besides battery I don't have any performance complaints. This is the main aspect I complain about. I'm still impressed that mine rarely warms up, signal is better than my G2, the battery cover has the brushed look like my Asus laptop, and so on.

Terrible battery life.

Hey everyone. Without further a do, I am saying that my N4 battery suuuuucks really bad. Started on stock rom, flashed Chroma w/ latest franco kernel. Nope. Still lots of drain (slightly better overall, but nothibg major). Then flashed hells doctor kernel. Nope. Lots of drain when screen is on, but stable with screen off.
Honestly, I've seen people getting 6h on screen time. And everyone says that these kernels and rom can increase battery life by a margin, while mine stays the same.
Oh and there is a thing. Ive recently broke my stock charger and now using apple's ipad charger. Mine was 1.2 A and the one from apple is 1 A. Is this is an issue we are looking for?
Or its just a 2years old battery running out of its life cycles...?
Thank you!

Nexus 4 battere sucks really no matter what you plus your network coverage may impact vastly on performance. Anyway given the battery is 2 years old, I would say it's gone even if it says it's good but again it depends on your usage like continuous tethering or other heavy activity that makes the phone run hot

Well my usage can be heavy surfing on FB, Instagram and definetely FB messenger. I often use chrome and mainly everything is done under Wifi.
According to my screenshots, you cannclearly see that shes (battery) is ok when screen is off, no drain and etc. As soon I start using it it drains A LOT. Almost 90° angle on diagram It's crazy.
Plot twist: To prevent spam on the XDA forums, ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages.
Yes, i have a new battery which was working well, but I flashed factory image 5.1.1 xxx47v and the batt life is really horrible now.
It's easy to replace the battery, I recommend taking out the sim card tray before taking the back off though.
I haven't been on here for a long time, whats the best rom, for batt life. I'm willing to go back to kit kat if I have to .
Also note that some of the screenshots with 6+ hours of SOT the user has handicapped their devices (disable 2 cores, lower max cpu/gpu frequency, etc).

Yes, I've seen people underlocking, undervolting etc. But that's not what I am planning to do with mine N4. Neither I'm hoping to have 6 hours SOT. 4 would be SUPER COOL. And that seems impossible for my device

This is what happened when I replaced Nexus 5X battery with a new one

Tired of getting 2h30 SOT (plugging off power at 7 am and needing to plug on again at 2 pm) I decided to spend a few bucks on a new battery. I own a nexus 5x for 10 months, so I thought maybe battery has been underperforming.
I've ordered also the needed tools so I could do the job myself. Very easy by the way.
I was excited to see how the brand new battery would perform the next day. So I plugged off power at 7 am and 2 pm I needed to plug back on power (2h30 sot). YEAH, I HAD NO IMPROVE AT ALL with a new battery.
Maybe it's that I have too many apps (100 at about), but I'm not the one who lives with whatsapp only.
So in order to relieve the pain of not getting through out the day I've bought an S7 edge and now I can settle down so I know I will get past through the day. I dislike many things on S7, like the crap fingerprint sensor and the inconsistent physical home button, but I'll try to live with it. My next bet would be the Xperia XZ, so I'm still considering.
So it was an unburden, but I feel I can help someone out with this experience.
Have you tried a third rom or ex kernel?
im kinda in the same boat. just received my 2nd replacement battery today... gonna see how the battery compares tomorrow with stock unrooted. if no change i'll be trying purenexus + elementalx with Hawktail 1.2 profile.... such a struggle with this phone........
I don't know about you, but my typical work day I range from 6-7 hours with around 3.5 SoT average. That's pretty okay, given how low our batteries are for this phone. I use SimpleAOSP + Franco kernel.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I deal with it by having a 10000 mAh battery bank handy in my work bag or car.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I know.
Since I have updated to Nougat, I have only 2 to 3 SOT. Also with franco kernel or elemtalx no improvement, no matter which profile.
Marchmallow was better with the battery performance.
I will try pure nexus with custom kernel (franco or elementalx).
I'm also wondering why the Android operating system has such a big battery consumption according to "betterbatterystats".
Otherwise always it was the google services.

Exactly what happened to me. No matter which profile I had a sensation that they were all the same in terms of performance and battery life.

A few questions
Which time do you plug off and on to power again? I mean, how many hours do you stay off the wall outlet?
How many apps do you have installed?
Do you use antes app/kernel for the purpose off extending battery life?
Thanks!

Mostly every night. Sometimes it gets me to 2 days of battery life. Im pretty heavy user
I have about 50 apps but i am very careful about apps i install and use. When i am at home on wifi all day it gets me 6-7 hrs SOT. I used most of the kernels i found on the XDA but now i am settled with minimalistic ABC rom with implemented DU kernel.

at first i was getting the same results but i've made some major improvements by using airplane mode when at work with wifi, greenifying almost all of my apps, removing Fitbit sync/notifications, and using the greenify manual hiberate now widget. getting over 2hrs of SoT now but it's still nowhere near the results I've seen from others using PureNexus Rom + ElementalX kernel (Hawktail 1.2 profile)
The battery of my Nexus 5x (not rooted) seemed to be nearly dead. Smartphone shut down at 50%, and sometimes the battery went down from 80% to 30% within a minute. Then suddenly the mainboard of my Nexus died. The mainboard was replaced and Android was resetted. After this the battery works as if it's a new battery.

I dont really know what you do in order to get less than 3h SOT, or what brightness you run your device on, or what apps you have installed, or if you have NFC, location, Bluetooth or LTE turned on all the time, but on this phone it is the usage that determines battery life. I got a new Nexus 5x with an old battery and had the same results. Ordered a new battery for about 10$ and got arround 5-5:30 h of SOT with the same usage over arround 43 h of stand by withouth charging in between on full stock. You might want to check whata draining your battery or maybe you are a multitasker that streams music, types on FB, browses instagram all at the same time while the screen is on 40% brightness.
For me 5x battery sucks, i want to get 6p soon, but price is a little bit too high now so i must wait some time to buy.
Im using Jolla kernel now, with small cluster -> 3cores, 1,2GHZ and big cluster -> 2 core 768MHz max.All on zzmove. Battery is now improved, some times big cluster shuts off sometimes it's working, but performance is good for dialy use. Multitasking is fine, chrome web browsing also. ~ 4h 20mins of SOT, previously ~ 3h.
So i think NOW battery is really good for my 1yr old phone.
ROM and kernel are inconsequential to battery life in comparison to normal factors such as usage, settings and signal. Without reducing performance or functionality (GAPs) the most you could hope for is +10-20%, if even that.
Low screen time doesn't mean your battery life is bad as that's just one form of measuring battery life. If you do a lot of messaging and phone calls for instance you will never have long screen time as you need to actively be using the screen in order to increase SoT. If SoT is your only measure of battery life then you don't understand how it works.
I regularly see 5-6 hours SoT over 24+ hours without root or disabling much, as I use my phone for mostly browsing and streaming.
Post some screenshots in our Battery Thread and I will take a look. Replacing hardware should be the last option for improving battery life.
I think it's not about the battery, rom, kernel, settings, installed apps....
I think......it's only about the device
I tried EVERYTHING. changed battery, all android versions, tried without google account, kernels, profiles, custom roms, interactive settings, I don't even use many apps
my device has abnormal consumption. period.
I have 3 friends with n5x that do more than 4 hrs of screen on
mine does 2. and I can do nothing. it's just this
I don't know if warranty could cover such thing, it would be hard to detect on RMA since is very user related

Use Greenify to kill some apps that work in background. If you are Facebook /Messenger user, to maximise the battery life uninstall them and use alternative one like the lite version of these. "Naptime" for aggressive doze. Greenify and Naptime gave to my phone nice battery life.... From 100% - 2% I have 4:15 - 4:30 SOT . All stock 7.1.2
