HRM selftest fails - check yours!! - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I did some selftests with *#0*# yesterday, and i did get a few errors in the HRM test inside the "sensor" test page. Look at the screenshot attached!
I would suggest that you test your HRM sensor as well, for that go into the dialer, enter *#0*#, click on "sensor", scroll down and do the HRM sensor EOL test. On 2 other devices I tested one has equal flaws as mine, the 3rd phone has all lines "pass".
Please post your results!
ps.: HRM = heart rate monitor

Mine fail also.

Are you sure the test isn't just not properly implemented for the given sensor?
I also get the fails, but it's working without issues at s health and it anyways isn't accessible from third party apps except through s health.

Good question, the fact is that I've seen one device from a friend which was ok, all lines were a "pass"! If the test itself is the problem, then perhaps all devices should fail...

Also, I wont use this sensor much, it bothers me more on a theoretical level...

Will check my wife's s7 edge tonight

I get failed also.

Fail.
In actual use with S Health a good half of the attempts at reading heart rate are unsuccessful, does this happen with your handset too?

All pass, AT&T S7E
I've never had a problem with S Health reading my heart rate. It works every time.

Mine says place finger on sensor correctly all the time even though I am.

If I lay my phone flat on my desk it works. Actually i lay it on a notepad and make sure that the camera and HRM are not touching the desk. It will pass the test this way but fail if I do not sit it on the notepad.

yes, mine fail if put on desk but put on a piece of paper (1-2mm thick) is saying pass. Camera and HRM sensor should not contact anything.

^^ This.
For the sake of completion, the HRM EOL test is supposed to be done with the phone completely still, which is why those that put their devices on a vibration dampening surface got the test to pass.

what are you using to view the orientation and information from the gyro
firstly i tried google maps navgation then i downloaded anoter 2 free aps gps test and gps status...if i hold the phone in one position it shows me one point as beeing the north...if i do a 180 degrees spin it shows me another point as beeing the north
ps i think its the digital compas thats foulty not the gyro right?

You could use the app Phone Tester it gives you a reading of all the sensors, but that's it.

This thread warrants an explanation of the differences between GPS, compass, and gyroscope.
GPS: Tells you where you are. It can be used to infer the direction in which you are moving. It can NOT tell you which way you are facing.
Compass: Tells you which way you are facing with respect to the Earth's north/south poles.
Gyroscope: Tells you how fast you are spinning about each of 3 axes (hence why it's called a "3-axis gyroscope"). It can be used to infer the direction in which you are facing (albeit not easily).
Neither the compass nor the gyroscope can tell you where you are, or the direction in which you are moving.
The problem you are seeing is with the compass, NOT with the gyroscope. Google maps does not currently do anything with the gyroscope. The digital compass can be calibrated. I use the "Compass" app, which has a calibrate function.
It's a 6-axis gyroscope, not 3.

No it's not a 6 axis. It's a 3 axis. It's listed here: http://www.google.com/nexus/#/tech-specs.
-----------------
Also general question/comment. Doesn't a gyroscope help the phone know which way is down? So technically you can have an object shown on the screen, then you can walk around that object with your phone and see all sides of the object. (Like the iPhone 4 demo Steve Jobs did with the game Jenga, he walked around the tower to see all sides)

There's no such thing (in this world) as a 6-axis gyroscope. What you are thinking is the oft-quoted phrase "6-axis gaming sensor" (or 6-axis motion sensor). A 6-axis motion sensor is actually a chip that combines a 3-axis accelerometer and a 3-axis gyroscope into one package.

A gyroscope only tells you how fast you are spinning about an axis. An accelerometer can (for the most part) tell you which way is down.

One of the things I hate doing is swiping a whole bunch to scroll through length webpages or forums.
Have you used the smart scroll feature to surf any pages? How well does it work? Does away with all the swiping that is normally done while surfing on a smartphone browser?
Have you tried the NFC? I assume it works in exactly the same way as GS3...?

Also, could you take pictures of the phone itself? In addition, a picture of the apps that are in the drawer immidiately upon boot?
Just tried it on a few pages...it seems to work really well...I guess it is based on the angle at which it thinks your eyes are looking at the screen so you can trigger it by tilting the phone. I can scroll up and down an entire page without touching the screen, and stop wherever I want to read something.

It's definitely nice, the screen is probably it's best feature. My other phone is the LG Optimus G so the S4 is not a big spec jump. It almost feels too light, but I am attributing that to the fact that my OG is a slab of glass.

Could you give us a real world example of the "dual camera" feature? I guess you simply have your face over whatever picture you took with the main shooter? The reviewers are excited about this feature, but I can't figure out any practical example of why this would be useful...

Maybe if you're filming a video and you want to talk about what you are filming? Maybe showing the reaction on your face to whatever it is you are taking a picture of. Video reviewers will like it because they can show their face while recording their review.
I'm definitely with you on that....the only thing I could see it being useful for is capturing your reaction to the picture you are taking...? It actually frames your face in a postage stamp and overlays that on the rear camera picture. I guess they are trying to make the picture taker not feel left out of the picture.

[Q] S Health Calibration?

S-Health's pedometer is pretty much useless. Is there anyway to calibrate it?
Have you updated the app? Try that first if you haven't. It updates under the Samsung app store, you have to log into your Samsung account first before it will let you update.
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Mine is very accurate. I've measured my distan c.f. e walked with an odometer and it matches my s-health numbers. I also used it on a treadmill the other day and distances matched also.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Sometimes, it's amazingly accurate. I'll run exactly 3 miles and it tells me I've gone 3 miles. Another day, I'll run 4 miles and it says I've gone 400 steps. I wonder if it has to do with how it's positioned on the body or something like that?
I use mine on my hip in a holster. Never had a problem.
Make sure your gyroscope is calibrated also.

Hi All and thanks for the responses.
I did recently recalibrate the gyroscope and it did not help. I usually hold my phone in my hand while running. Is that a bad thing to do? What is the best position?
I downloaded Accupedio (?) and it was far more accurate than S-Health.
I wear my phone in an armband on my bicep, and as I said, that's not terribly accurate. This morning, I ran 3 miles and it currently says that I've gone 317 steps, most of which were probably between my car and my desk. I'm going to guess that it works a lot better in my pants pocket than it does on my arm.
Of course, I don't really care about the accuracy of S-Health. If I wanted to accurately track my runs, I would use MapMyRun. If I was concerned with tracking steps, I'd get something like a Fitbit.
I've given up on S Health. I have it updated and yesterday had the phone in my back pocket on the treadmill and it was still way off. I had Accupedo running also and it was very close to what the treadmill said.

Faulty compass

Does anyone else get the following:
1. GMaps not recognising the compass and not turning its compass as you turn round;
2. Compass app goes mental when you test by spinning round (mine spins the wrong way then back randomly)
?
Looks like my Note3 is proper fkd. At the moment it's just peeing me off.

Sounds like the Note 3 is suffering from the same compass issue as the S4. The compass just needs to be calibrated. Download GPS Status & Toolbox (excellent app!) from Google Play Store and go to Tools/Compass calibration. That should fix it. Calibrate the compass outdoors away from metal structures for best accuracy. Factory reset resets also the compass calibration data, but luckily the calibration takes only about 10 seconds or so. Hope this helps!

Cheers Pete.
I did try that but it's still flying all over the place.
Sending it back as faulty. There's too much I dislike about this phone to make it worth £620.
I tried with mine and a few demo units from the stores.
After a thorough test, they all essentially have this problem. My one, when you go to *#0*# it would just either not spin or spin sporadically, same with the demo units.
I guess it's a software problem, 4.3 problem essentially, my AOSP'd Note 2 also has this problem

My new device still has this bug, but calibrates faster than my first one. It's a widely known bug, maybe Samsung needs to fix it.
FWIW mine has the same problem. I did manage to get it work work correctly for a little while by using a "metal detector" app which vibrated when it detected something. It suddenly started behaving correctly for a short while.
Calibrating it with the GPS Tools app also fixes it for a little while.
Having the same issue with my Note 3 as well. The GPS Status app using the compass calibration fixes the problem but once you restart the phone the compass no longer works again and you need to calibrate once more.
It seems like a software bug issue rather than a faulty compass. It's annoying but at least there is a solution.

What is the meaning of that?

When I logged in test menu trying to test heart beat sensor that was the result...what is this all failure ??
Nothing to worry about. Depending what the sensor is looking at declares what passes and fails, so I'm guessing the test requires a specific object to look at for everything to pass.
Sent from my SM-N910F
But this is self test without any thing need to do from me
If you put your finger in front of it, a piece of paper, light/dark room etc. All yield different results, so I would think samsung have a unique environment for the sensor to pass all tests.
