Hello, I have been playing with my new S7 edge a couple hours now and am liking it in some ways and wondering why the heck I paid 2.5x as much as I did for my 1+1 in many others. This maybe be a small thing, but I'm on the fence about returning the thing and going with a 6P instead, so hopefully some kind soul will help me confirm if my problem is my device or some software thing.
So, it seems that using any of the themes from the Samsung Store that contain an animated lockscreen totally bugger the S7. Here are steps to reproduce:
1) Go to the baked-in Samsung store, it's a Galaxy Essentials widget 2 screens over on mine
2) Choose Theme Store at the bottom, then AoD themes. Pick one with an animated lockscreen (Night Sky AOD and PixelQuest_AOD are two)
3) Download one and apply it. Lock phone and attempt to enter a pin.
At this point, my phone becomes almost unusably laggy - the only way I can get in is with the fingerprint sensor, and that even lags. Again, while this may not be a huge deal, it blows my mind that this $800 phone can't handle these 10 frame animations, especially since I was able to do similar on the 1+1 quite easily.
Thanks for any words of advice or confirmation on if this is a wider issue than just my phone. note the issue is gone after reverting to the stock theme, which wouldnt be a problem if I didnt hate the brightness - even the settings menus are much more readable to me with one of the themes I mentioned, other stuff aside.

I have shineblack AOD, it lagged exactly as you described. Then I turned off aod and it no longer lags. Well it still lags in Chrome but that's another story.
Hmm, so the lag goes away without AoD? Great, thank you - must just be a software bug they will (hopefully) correct soon then.
Edit: tried switching off AoD in display, still the same lag.. guess you meant switching off the theme
Don't know what I am doing wrong or right lol but my phone didn't lag at all. I tried night sky and pixel quest.

Well.. that's depressing then Thanks for the result though. The phone I got is a Snapdragon. It feels like it's struggling in several other ways to me - ie, install bars going to 80% and sticking there forever, phone gets warmer than my 1+1 ever did running emulators etc just sitting on the homescreen, etc. This lagginess seems portentious enough that if others respond like you, I will just return and swap for a 6p. So yeah, thanks again
Well I have the Snapdragon too so don't know what's going on. Bit I'm on T-Mobile so don't know if it will differ per carriers. But it does seem like you are someone that like pure vanilla Android and if that's the case yeah you might want to get the Nexus phone.

No I still have the theme on. It was lagging when AND was on, but since I turned AOD off pressing the home button, scanning a fingerprint and unlocking the phone happens in 2 seconds with no lag. Maybe it's just the theme you were using, Idk. It's still really early on for this phone, I'd expect a release day update. But if this chrome lag and page refreshing keeps up I'll likely be returning this thing within the 14 day limit. My $400 MXPE performs better.
Ok, thanks guys. I'm on Tmobile as well - just did a factory reset and still have the same prob, so meh. Enough of an omen for me to get out while the getting's good.
When I had the S6 Edge Plus I noticed that there were a few themes that caused lag but then they were eventually updated by the creator and the lag went away.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I tried 4-5 different themes and i "feel" lagging with only white theme of tech section in Samsung themes.
QQ. Are you all rebooting right after you install new themes? I noticed on the S6 that this step was critical even if not directly recommended.

Did you use the AoD enabled themes? (always on display) - it only seems to be the ones with animated lockscreens that cause the lag, the Dino theme in that category does not, for example

I have rebooted several times, yeah. Also tried clearing cache and even a factory reset, with the same problem (just rushed into the samsung store and got a theme after the reset)
Are there any updates out already or anything I might be missing? Dont get why I'd have this prob and not someone with the same device/carrier like the guy posting here before, unless I just got a skunky phone or something Think I'm going to head to the T-Mobile store tomorrow and make them try it on one of the test units..
My lag came from when a theme applied a live wallpaper to the lock screen. I changed that back to a static paper and all is good again
@nukularpowar yes i have aod in every theme i tried. With England and others 2-3 everything was ok and very smouth but with white theme i found a little laggy from aod screen to unlock screen, also the scrolling seems to be slower than the others themes.
I've tried an AOD theme, I got no lag here using the Exynos variant

Haven't totally verified it, but it looks like Samsung took away the Lock effect, watercolor, which gives the nice water sound and lets you splash around the colors on the opening lock screen. Will find out more tomorrow, anyone else experiencing this same option missing ?
another guy in the other ota update thread mentioned the same thing.
I can confirm that it did in fact remove the effect on the lockscreen... What in the world... That was a nice feature. Mind you it lagged beastly for such a powerful device. (Specs sheet wise)
PS: I can definitely see a noticeable difference in speed. It might be just for the time been. But i'll keep you guys posted.
There is something about that water effect that causes more lag than it should. I noticed on my first generation Note 10.1 that disabling it improved speed on the homescreen and even typing. It shouldn't, but it did. When I noticed this I asked two other guys and they were having issues with lag. I told them to disable the water effect. Both also agreed that it improve the speed of the device as a whole.
Doesn't make any sense. I was, however, glad to see the ripple effect gone. It is beautiful though (less the lag)
Why do they take it away...regardless...

If indeed it cause lagged, why not just give the option of the three effects on the lock screen and add, an off feature and let the user of the tablet decide if they want it off or not. They also, have bugs in the high end graphics games crapping out. They also have cause the S-voice to crash when you ask certain questions, they also have contacts created with action memo failing to keep first and last names apart. I will do a video on all this nonsense and post it on youtube. Hopefully, Samsung will see it and respond with some sort of fix for all this stuff, and maybe just maybe they will put back the ripple effect and let us chose if we want it or not. And by the way Samsung if your reading this, your tablet still is laggy at times even with this ripple effect turned off.

Ok, well Im wondering what lag you guys are referring to. My point was that all samsung had to do was give an option to turn off, the effect, for those that wanted to, and they could have stated it makes the tablet slightly if any faster. Anyway, Believe it or not, I was able to add it back in for those who like to use it and guess what the lag issues are still fixed. The app is called galaxy locker here is the link and it works like a charm.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lockscreen.galaxy
I wonder if part of the reason for turning it off was for the multiuser cause they needed to make the lock screen more like AOSP?
I thought I was going insane when I turned my tablet on and the watercolor effect was gone. I am hoping they bring it back or at least replace it with something better-looking than the current Tab 3 lock screen.

I've got it back, guess you didn't read the link i posted, which is an app thats downloadable from the play store. Im not rooting this yet. I like the samsung bloat.
So I bought my G4 from T-mobile yesterday as I did the initial install it feels choppy and laggy. After all the google play updates and restart the phone was still laggy when I move from app to app, home screen to setting and back. What I found out that help was changing the layout in Setting from Tab View to List View as you navigate around the phone like what I did previously everything became smooth and no longer laggy. Havent run into any issue with battery drain, wifi, touch screen, heat as most users describe yet will update if I find alternative solution.
After a fresh start (after factory reset, ROM flash, OS upgrade), the system does lots of indexing and set up, leading to a laggy phone and high battery drain. Give it a couple of days to settle down.
Yeah mine was same first startup is slow feels so laggy. But now feels great and battery life is also improved. I disabled most of google apps only have gmail.

Ahhh indexing that sounds quite about right for a moment I thought because UI itself throttle down the cpu of the phone so it seems laggy. Thanks for info hope it gets better in a couple of days as for apps that are not needed which bloatware apps do u guys disable so it doesnt run in the background and such?
Mine almost seems as if the phone doesn't have the resources to handle high usage. I'm waiting patiently for root so we can slim it down and better utilize cpu scaling (on demand, performance, etc)

The G4s (And I guess along with other phones) do have a sizable amount of bloatware installed as well. Just looking at the apps pre-installed from out of the box, there's quite a bit for a brand new phone.
Even though my G4 is broken in now, I found that after I disabled a buttload of these apps, it felt a bit snappier.
And I guess as a recommendation since you just got the phone. Replace the text messaging app ASAP! Stock is garbage, after I imported about 10'000 messages from my old phone, it slowed down as if I had it for a while. After replacing it with Textra. It's smooth as butter. Best decision I've ever made, and I generally hate leaving stock app for another one because I prefer less clutter.
Another one is to replace the stock keyboard with something like SwiftKey. This is a no brainer after using the stock keyboard for a while.
Some choose to replace Chrome as well with Firefox, or nochromo.
Just my top 3 recommendations for our G4s. After doing these 3, everything felt a lot better.

Exactly one must wait about two days so it all settled down. A factory reset helps if your phone didn't come with the newest update 5.1 or what not. But yeah
Mine didn't come with too much bloat if at all so I never had any lag issues, but using Textra and SwiftKey helped a with speeding it up. The stock messaging app wasn't cutting it

It is getting smoother and snappier but still see that animation lag when you're at home screen and press app drawer..do that multiple time and you will see the jitter. BTW I also disable alot of unnecessary app dont know if this come into play and also an option in Battery Setting where it say to reduce game graphic I turn that off:good:. Hopefully it is running at higher cpu/graphic frequency. Question does anyone know what OEM UNLOCK is in Developer menu?
I can play godfire without any issues
Oh look, it's you!!
So yesterday the Good Lock app randomly auto pushed to my phone from the Galaxy app store.
Has anyone else had this happen?
It also replaced the system ui. I was able to open the app and uninstall it, but I get a notification about twice a day saying I have an app to update. Every time the notification is for Good Lock.
Is Samsung forcing it on its users now?
Also is anyone using it ? Does it still negatively effect the battery? Does it remove the theme sort from the phone as well?
Thanks!
Happened to me too. I also uninstalled it, couldn't achieve a look that I like. You can disable the notification from the Galaxy Apps settings menu

I like it, it's cool imo. The multitask screen looks better.
Hmmm...
At first, I was angry it auto updated/Installed. It.changed everything I was used to. I HATED it!
Then I played around with it a bit, and I can now see some useful features in it. Mostly the lockscreen widgets and the Routines. I'm not a fan of the notification shortcuts though.
Im going to give it a few days to sink in. If I don't miss the old layouts, then I'll keep it.
Just REALLY wish theyd update the autocorrect though. I had to retype many words in this message!

I just checked out the reviews for good lock this isnt an isolated incident. People are really mad, complain their phone now has "girly colors" and threatening to go back to iOS if they don't add the ability to change colors (which you've always been able to do)

Took me awhile to figure out how to change colors, buried in the routines menu. And because I use a them already, was even more fun trying to get them to match. I did try it for a few days, but went back to the regular lock screens. Also didn't seem to work real well with AoD.

been using on my 2 phones for months; i prefer the stock Android UI look as well as the ability to "keep" some of my notifications so i can follow up later. the latest version allows you to further customize the colors (not just dragging the polygons from left to right or vice-versa). takes (me a) little effort to get it like i want it, but i can then backup and restore when necessary. --- i'm a keep it simple/basic user so the less stuff, the better (for me).
also, @nuclearrage, what issues were you having with AoD? GoodLock and AoD are working fine on my devices.
Hi all,
Just switched to the s8 from a google pixel.
Beautiful phone, but if is noticeably slower, in many ways:
1. Poor screen responsiveness of the keyboard. Typing on SwiftKey is slower on the s8 than the pixel. It seems that take a split second longer to recognise the touch.
2. Scrolling stuttering. The pixel's scrolling is buttery smooth. The s8 seems to be seriously slopping frames for something as simple as scrolling a page of text on chrome!
3. App switcher. It's really very jelly compared to the buttery smooth Pixel.
Anyone else experienced these issues, and /or have any thoughts?
I had moments yesterday where my S8 had skipped or stuttered, but it's been perfect today.
No issues here, and I'm no samsung fan boy. I've got iPhone 7 plus, zte axon 7, lg v20, and I've owned nexus devices. But with My track record with samsung I'd know for sure in 2 weeks lol. Happy so far
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Has been butter smooth for me and I have not noticed any lag on the keyboard or in any screen. Not sure why you are experiencing such poor performance.
Pixel is bare bones and Samsung is full of features and customization (some useful and others a waste). Samsung is know for bloatware which slows the phone down, but my S8 is fluid.
I noticed the same thing
I noticed a delay with my s8 compared to the pixel xl when I happened to switch between apps on both. To test it out I opened up the same two apps and double tapped the toggle window button. The s8 is slower and not as smooth. There may be an animation speed setting that makes it faster but still seems like it wouldn't be as smooth.
Typing this in noticing swift key going slower too.
My battery is at 15% so maybe something is optimizing it and slowing it down...
Started having problems again. Ironically, similar to the problems that caused me to switch from the S4 to the S8 and to what the OP mentions.. Freezing of apps and high battery draw. Stuttering and slow to switch apps and unlock. Problems with keyboard not recording keystrokes. Then it goes b as back to being perfect again.
There is an update ready, but I'm having flashbacks to the update that locked the S4 down. I know this phone is already locked down more than the S4 ever was, but still...
No problems here. It's really fast. Faster than my old S6 Edge.

But same with my case I didn't know the update was going to break bixby button so I stopped it when I found out. I can't remember if we can just download it and then once it offers to install maybe we could ignore it but I forgot if that was the case for 7.0 update for s7e
I'm getting stuttery scrolling across various apps. Some are smooth though, and others more like a mid-range phone from a few years ago - not what you'd expect from a flagship device today.
I'm experiencing the stuttering apps. As mentioned in this thread, disabling window animations has helped with this experience.
This is my first android phone since the HTC one X.
Can we expect any custome ROMs? Or updates to improve performance?

Not all apps are created equal, some are smoother than others simply because they're written differently.
This is my unit (Exynos). Do you have the same behaviour?
What people don't understand is feature packed (bloatware) launcher will always stutter compared to vanilla. Just look at how many services are running

I know that on the graph, anything over the green line is a frame drop, but it was somewhat hard for me to notice without the slow down video. Doesn't seem too bad honestly.

I had stuttering and poor battery life, wiped and it all went away.
these are not framedrops depending on bad performance or bad programming. its implemented badly thats all...
if you swipe lets say from the buttom to the top and finger always on screen there is no framedrop... even if you do it fast.
if you let go before animation is over then the break happens...
its just poorly done... just finger on screen all the time...
I've bought a galaxy s8 and this kind of lag is anoying. I can feel the same problem as you. Some scrolling apps stutter too.
I think it has gotten much worse after the latest update with May patch level. The device is super stuttery for me, apps force close all the time. I reverted back to the FHD resolution, cleaned cache partition and uninstalled almost everything I dont need. Didn't do ****. Super annoying.

Its true
I've had a S-835 and two Exynos and none performed like your videos. But I never recorded them in slow motion either. The performance you get has a lot to do with what you freeze, what apps you're running, and your settings. The more people "customize" their phones the more problems it seems to create sometimes.
Mine after factory reset performs like that on the stock launcher, in nova or evie performs lag free

Again, I had a U.S. version, a pink UK version that got returned, and my current UK phone. I used the two that are gone for two weeks each and all three phones were configured identically with over 100 apps and four push e-mail accounts. None of them lagged or stuttered in app openings, transitions, or scrolling. I see you're in Latin America so maybe it's a regional issue.
