Just got my phone and I need to wait on rooting. Can I take the January OTA updates and still root later?
Yes. If you plan to root later, unlock the bootloader first before you set everything up. Unlocking the bootloader will force a wipe of all data. Rooting will not, if the bootloader is already unlocked.

If I'm reading this right, I need to unlock the bootloader just to get root? Does that also mean it would take a data wipe to un-root?

Unlocking does not provide root access, but it is a requirement for gaining root. If you wait to unlock your bootloader and set all your apps and settings on your phone, it will all be lost when you decide to root because the bootloader must be unlocked to root.
Therefore it is best to unlock first if you have the intention of rooting later to save your data and settings.

To get root access you need to install SuperSU, to install SuperSU you need TWRP recovery, to install TWRP recovery you need an unlocked bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader wipes all userdata from the device. The best way to do it is like this:
1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Flash the factory images for the latest build to make sure you're completely up to date.
3. Install TWRP.
4. Make a nandroid backup with TWRP.
5. Install SuperSU to get root.
6. Install whatever root mods/apps you want.

I see thank you. This is different from any other phone I've been on where root is found before unlock, if unlock is ever found

Just unlock your bootloader and flash a new ROM on your phone. Most of the ROMs available for our phone have that update or better already on the ROM.

Thanks, but I don't want to take the route of custom ROMs, sorry.
I had to unlock my bootloader first using RSDlite and the small .sbf file (pudding.rar) Click here to download
My bootloader was supposed to be already unlocked but I guess the updated firmware didn't realize it. I couldn't run fastboot flash without getting an error
I then rooted by flashing preinstall.img and running commands to install the superuser binary and .apk. Instructions here
I don't know of a way to root 4.5.141 without unlocking the bootloader first. If you find a way let me know

I believe the OP is looking for a root option that will work with a locked bootloader.

It's kind of a "Been there, done that" kind of thing from my Win Mob days. lol
I am pefectly happy with stock Atrix ROMs, and just want to be able to retain root or re root to use a couple of apps like Titanium Backup.
Has anyone with an unlocked bootloader/rooted Atrix tried the update?
I like to stick with the stock rom for now but I haven't found directions for updating to 141 yet. I'd like to keep root and not hard brick my Atrix...After the 2nd time Moto might get suspicious
I wasn't able to use the OTA updates once I rooted (even before I unlocked my bootloader). Of course, that could be Bell building in a check. I even tried unrooting (using GingerBreak) and that still wouldn't allow me to use an OTA update.
I would think you'll have to root, unlock bootloader, and then flash an firmware file from this tread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944.
Actually, you're right in that the OTA update will probably fail without me going to a more "out of the box" state. I suppose I'd have to first create a nandroid, a titanium backup then flash my phone with a 4.5.91 stock image using fastboot, do the OTA, then re-root, and restore the titanium backup to get back to where I was. And if anything fails restore from my nandroid.
Does that sound right?
I've heard there could be issues relating to going back to a locked bootloader file. So I'm not sure on specifics there. I just run CyanogenMod to avoid all that stuff.

So...in fastboot mode, you were able to run fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img and thus successfully create the "preinstall\" partition with the necessary files on your phone without getting an error message???
My bootloader was unlocked long ago but I still couldn't flash the preinstall partition without running the pudding unlock .sbf first. Idk
I wasn't even able to boot into fastboot without unlocking the bootloader first.

yep, followed all of the steps and every one is successful. I'm very risk-averse when it comes to messing with my phone, so I've never unlocked my phone. Only root.
I love how no one is answering your question just telling you to unlock your bootloader...
I downloaded the ota update, installed and got failed to boot 4 starting rsd node.. i had unlocked bootloader before update help please!! I pulled the battery for now.

Is there any way to get step by step instructions for this
I have a few naive questions
Do I have to do the OEM unlock to root the device? I would prefer not to wipe it.
Assuming I don't hard brick the device, can I go back to stock for warranty work?
Does rooting the device mean I can't get OTA updates from Google? For now I just want to run the stock kernel/rom and get updates. I just want root to run titanium and certain other apps that require root.
I've seen a thread that suggest that the play store (market) doesn't work on rooted devices. Is that true?

In order to root, you have to unlock the bootloader using the nexus toolkit which unfortunately wipes the device. then you can root it
Yes you can go completely back to stock and relock the bootloader
No, you cant get updates without losing root. so basically you update and then reroot, it takes 5 seconds.
The play store works perfectly fine on rooted devices

So I would get the same OTA update notice and just lose root by telling it to ahead?
However, the bootloader would remain unlocked so the reroot would not require a wipe. Also installing CWM recover would not interfere with any of that.
Is that all correct?

i cant remember if cwm interferes or not. if your just stock then dont worry about it.
yes, it does not require a wipe, just a re root.
Another thing. I haven't done anything about the $25 google credit. Does doing the wipe effect that?
Installing a custom recovery WILL prevent you from receiving OTA updates. The $25 credit is applied to your account and isn't affected by anything you do with your tablet afterward.

There are some apps out that may retain root. OTA RootKeeper in the play store has one Nexus 7 reviewer that claims he retained root from 4.1.0 to 4.1.1
But you are correct, even if you lose root reflashing is a trivial matter.
WugFresh has a toolkit that can do all this for you, including unlocking/rooting but NOT permanently installing CWM if you so desire.
Or, if you prefer a hands-on and more educational approach take a look at my guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816048

you do not have to use any toolkit. as a fact, toolkits take longer to root the device. this is a nexus device, toolkits are discouraged. all you need to do is fastboot oem unlock, flash your custom recovery via fastboot, then either flash su binaries or your custom rom in recovery, and reboot. that is all. and yes, unlocking your bootloader will wipe the device. thats why its best to do it before you get to comfortable on it.
Is their a way to update while being rooted, and keep the data. I am thinking that after I lock the phone and update it, and re root it, that my phone will be wiped completely

You can't update while rooted, it won't work. You don't have to lock the bootloader though, the bootloader can remain unlocked and won't affect updates. The easiest way to update is by flashing the factory images for the latest build, you don't lose any data doing so as you don't need to wipe. I have detailed instructions in section 10 of my guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
You'll just need to root again afterwards.
I have searched everywhere for a way to get root without unlocking the bootloader. I want to enable double tap to wake on my wife's 6P, but I don't want to wipe her data during the bootloader unlock process. Thanks everyone for any help.

If you don't unlock the bootloader, you can't flash a custom recovery. If you can't flash a custom recovery, you can't install a custom rom or possibly the su binary. Unlocking essentially bypasses the verify process on boot; it verifies the rom, recovery, etc. is the signed official version. I've understood some tools may be able to allow root on an locked bootloader, but I'm not sure for the 6P.
Unless you care about Pay, just backup the phone and unlock it.
was hoping a dev could figure this out. i just want root for root apps and flashfire to flash things. kind of sucks having a nexus that requires an unlocked bootloader for root but i been on stock rom with locked bootloader after going two weeks with custom roms and no android pay. still hoping it will happen eventually.

People have had success using Android Pay on a rooted 6P. I think people use magisk and Phil's SU and they are able to hide root from Android Pay and other apps. You should do a search through the forums. A lot of people talk about doing it successfully.

How can I update my phone?
Thanks a lot
Hello, I experienced something similar- complete absence of system update! A little digging revealed that any modifications to the system partition would render the device un-updateable, so naturally I downloaded the complete marshmallow package update for my device, booted into standard recovery, and updated from sd card
Hope this helps

if you are willing to, just root your phone and flash the marshmallow rom on to your phone and use titanium backup to backup everything before you do so.

You don't need root to install TWRP, nor to install a custom ROM.
Exception is Verizon, where you need root to s-off, and then unlock bootloader; as bootloader unlock by HTCDev.com is not supported for that version alone.

If you get bootloader unlocked, you basically rooted your device cause now you are allowed to modify the system data and make modification that can result in unusable phone. Plus if you are willing to take the risk of unlocking your bootloader, why don't you just root anyways, its just a matter of flashing super su zip.

No, you didn't. Root is a very specific thing. You either have root (SU) priviledge, or you don't. Unlocked bootloader does not give you root privilege. It only allows you to flash unsigned zips to certain partitions.

Think of it this way. If you flashed a cm ROM without root in the first place, you would get root. I'm not saying unlocking bootloader immediately give you root access but it allows almost anything that you flash to have root access

Some folks keep incorrectly stating that you need root to flash custom recovery on this device (on some devices, you do - but not this one). I'm just trying to make sure that misinformation doesn't keep getting conveyed (the post after yours said it, too).
Stating the process precisely, is the best way to do that.
