Yes you can root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
@Veid71 - - please go to the bottom of this info I posted to see my inquiry. Does this mean (which I kinds doubt that once my s5 is rooted (or while "preparing" for it) that I can't load my google account? I've rooted/ROM'ed my Galaxy S3 (Eclipse) and my S4 (05/2014 via towelroot), but I lost my rooted S4 two weeks ago and just got an S5 (verizon). Screenshots "About Phone" of my current S5 is below.
BTW will this method of root flag Knox? I'm 2 years since rooting my S4 so I don't know what's current today (i.e. can the knox count be reset if flagged?). Thank you
Prepare your phone for root
Download G900VVRU2BPB1_G900VVZW2BPB1_VZW.zip and unzip it
Reboot to recovery (Power+Volume Up+Home Button) and wipe data from recovery, reboot to bootloader
Plug In your phone and open Odin located in the OK3_ROOT folder
Make sure your phone is recognized (In the Odin Screen Under ID:COM the box under will be blue with your com port id #)
Click the AP button in the Odin Screen and locate and click on the G900VVRU2BPB1_G900VVZW2BPB1_G900VVRU2BPB1_HOME.tar .md5 this is the file that was unziped from the G900VVRU2BPB1_G900VVZW2BPB1_VZW.zip(Everything you do will be flashed via AP!!!!)
This will take a few minutes for odin to load and verify MD5. When done in the odin message box it will say
Code:
Enter CS for MD5..
Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
Please wait..
G900VVRU2BPB1_G900VVZW2BPB1_G900VVRU2BPB1_HOME.tar.md5 is valid.
Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
Leave CS.
Under options DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING (Previously I had you check NandErase but this was part of the problem with root not finishing)
Now click on Start
When finished you will get a green box that says PASS!
Phone will reboot automatically to recovery and finish updating then it will restart
When Phone has finished loading and has booted up go through setup and do not add any google accounts or samsung accounts or anything
Not sure I would use the newest rooting method I think they have king root which should do it automatically now
Wow - thanks for the immediate reply. I've done some looking around the past few days while my s5 was en route to me via UPS and I don't remember where/what or post/thread, but I thought a few comments stated king root won't work. Do you know of a thread within XDA that may show what I need to find? Thanks again, Lane
ps I'm in between apartments at the moment and am using library computer and my s4 (s5 active on wifi but the wifi reception is sketchy around here), but it's not officially "active" on verizon yet so please bear with me if I don't reply to you immediately. Library is closing at 8:00 EST (15 minutes)

Excellent!!
Thank you. I've read what it says and it sure looks like what I need --> certainly will help me avoid coming here looking for help after screwing something up...which is why I came here earlier tonight.
I'll spend some time tomorrow reviewing all of it when I can get to a PC. The 5" s4 screen and 5.1" s5 are great, but it'll be a heck of a lot easier to read on a monitor. Thanks again!

No problem if you got any questions feel free to shoot me a private message or ask on here again and I'll try to find the answer its been awhile since I rooted mine though so it might be awhile before I find one xD
Tried to do things with library PC but I couldn't get their PC to recognize my s5 as removable storage (in "my computer"). This unfortunately creates delays I don't need.
Nevermind the two below images. They were there last night before I saw things on a PC today and I have since revised this post, but cannot delete the images below
They believe necessary?

A friend asks you believe our galaxy s5 convenient rootear verizon android 6.0.1, which would be significant to motivate and thank do change.
@Veid71 - I sent you a PM Friday, but just looked at "sent pm's" to see it's not there
I went to the library Friday a.m. and looked at painiac's steps to root. It looks elementary and simple to do. My problem was that their PC didn't recognize my s5 in "my computer" as devices with removable storage. That obviously didn't let me continue.
I did download current Samsung drivers (to library PC), paid for SU ME in Play, downloaded OK3_ROOT V5.exe to PC & opened it to see contents (everything looks to be there).... but I couldn't do anything since the PC didn't recognize my s5 as attached to PC. I suspected firewall or some security set up by library, but second guessed that since I was able to download OK3_ROOT to library PC. Not sure what to do next since my laptop hardrive crashed in June and everyone I know has apple pc's.
Updated post - it seems that Samsung pushed an update ("software update is available") to my phone Friday evening while I was out to dinner and the phone was in the car. I didn't accept it yet and I think this is the marshmallow update, correct?
Thanks
@Veid71 - yes, it is marshmellow as they are now acknowledging/identifying the update as such (see image below). What is "cid 15" you mentioned in your pm to me?
I'm meeting with a friend of mine Monday and since he's got a non apple PC I *should* be able to root with what you sent me last week.
^^Didn't work on his PC either^^
I couldn't get his PC to recognize s5 as attached. Both root.bat1 and root.bat2 started to bootloader screen w/ the android guy and "Do not turn off Target!!". (each for over 15 minutes & after wiping cache). And after root.bat1 hung I only clicked root.bat2 as I continued since instructions said not to click root.bat1 again.
Yes, current Samsung drivers downloaded to PC, OK_root downloaded and it contained a lot of items, I tried 3 different cables to connect s5 to PC and none worked. Anybody have any suggestions??
If I ever get root will it prevent accepting the marshmellow update or otherwise Block the update? I'd think *we* should keep lollipop 5 if we can, right? Will marshmellow update, if unavoidable, remove root? I see that marshmellow 6.0.1 is currently unrootable so how can we prevent that update from appearing and possibly being forced onto our device?
Thanks for your help
I think this explains things. This is midway through @painiacs long & detailed post. Will update my post w/ the results when I get a chance to retry Kingroot in the next few days.
I just got an S5 today after having a rooted nexus since day 1 and tried king root which didn't work. Tried one click root I think it was called and that also didn't work. It wouldn't allow me to install either apk even though I set to allow unknown apps. Did something change where it's not rootable anymore?!

Thanks to Samsung for the prompt update! Thanks to Google for the free tablet!
To update, just go to Settings->About Tablet->Software Update->Check for Updates.
If you don't have a Samsung account, you will have to create one. I'm in the US, but there wasn't a choice for that so I chose UK and it worked just fine.
It will download the update and reboot to install it. The download is pretty quick, but the update takes quite a while to apply. Once it gets to about 73% complete or so, the update inches along very slowly. So just be patient.
After the update, the lock screen background is different but all my settings were preserved.
About tablet (after upgrade):
Android version: 3.1
Kernel: 2.6.36.3
Build: HMJ37.UEKF3 P7510UEKF3
EDIT:
- The upgrade does not make you loose root access. This tablet really is a dream for developers.
- I don't see any evidence of any TouchWiz components anywhere. It still appears to be stock.
- Since this is a WiFi tablet, there's still no access to the Android Video Store (plus I'm rooted). Supposedly that is only enabled on 3G tablets for some reason. Oh well, who cares.
Have fun!
Hi, has it got the awful touchwiz built in or is it still "vanilla" android?
My thanks, like you, to samsung for the update and the tab
I have rooted my IO tab and froze some of the samsung system apps with titanium backup. I'm hesitant to update until I get some more information.
I don't think if touchwiz is ready yet. It will be updated later...
Does this break root or CW recovery? Or can you boot into fastboot after the update?

Same here, rooted, apps frozen with TB.... not at all worried at the quality of 3.1 update versus 3.0.1 delivered on the tab at IO but would have to fall on my ceremonial sword if I updated and ruined a lovely piece of kit by subjecting it to touchwiz... More than my honour could handle
No disrespect but not interested in comments repeating ill informed speculation from" uninformed" blogs, just want a straight answer, so if you are still online ageitgey can you tell us yes or no as regards TW - thanks
Thanks a ton!
Downloading as we speak.
There is no sign of TouchWiz in 3.1. It looks completely the same as before, except minor differences (new lock screen background, slightly different wifi icon, etc).
Root was preserved after my upgrade. RootExplorer still works fine and was granted root permissions.
I didn't have Titanium installed, so I can't comment on that. But I doubt there would be an issue.
anybody else having issues updating?
I am getting
"Failed to update firmware. Try again useing PC software (Kies) or visit a Samsung service centre."
not really sure what to do from here.
Concur, no sign of touchwiz, root preserved, titanium works fine. Bizarrely background color of text box when writing this has changed from white to blue and font is dark blue. Apps seem to work ok.
Well report other changes as and when found
onovich, you are not alone. I get the same thing.

Kies says that "This version of the device cannot be updated".
OTA update doesn't work because I've rooted the ROM and installed busybox.
Probably after reverting to stock ROM via Odin OTA update will work?
Updated here, not too many changes noticeable to the end user. Wonder about USB Host - I suppose we need an adapter of some kind because of Samsung's proprietary 30pin port?
so whats the official word on updating
will it work if you are rooted , or unlocked bootloader, or both
I just swapped from my Amaze 4g, to a used Note 3, and I'm a little lost as far as where I should start.
It says that it's on 4.4.2, and that I cannot update due to a modified system.
Basically, I would like to get updated to 5.1.1 (or as close as is official for the Note 3), and root it.
I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Samsung devices, and because I purchased this from ebay, I don't know how to tell the exact state that the former user put it in (I expected they would return it to stock prior to selling).
It's currently a T-Mobile branded, SM-N900T, on 4.4.2, build is KOT49H, security software MDF v1.0 release 2. Kernel is 3.4.0-660648.
It is supposedly unlocked for carriers, though I have not attempted a SIM card use yet, until I can tell that what I have is a valid device and the IMEI is checked out.
Any thoughts on how to validate the IMEI, and sort out how to get my new phone up to date would be appreciated. As I stated, I expected the vendor would have returned it to stock, but that is clearly not the case, so I don't want to accidentally boot loop it by doing something I shouldn't. I have not owned a Samsung before, so I want to be careful on how it differs from my Nexus 7, Amaze 4g, and Droid X, as they're all obviously very different in the OS area.
Thank you for the help1
Download tbe stock 4.4.2 rom and use odin to install. Then you will get the OTA updates.
Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk
There is no stock 5.1.1 for note 3, only cm12.1/ aosp. Latest is 5.0 and you can use odin to flash. Maybe it's rooted that's why you can't update.

Some apps to install from Play Store...
Phone INFO Samsung - this will tell you all about your phone and the firmware etc.
Root Checker Basic - tells you if you are rooted or not.
SuperSU - this is so valuable you should buy the Pro licence. Chainfire does some great work for our phones.
TWRP - I have the zip version on my extSDCard and an Odin version on PC in case I have to rebuild from a Stock firmware. CWN works OK but most ROM builds seem to be for TWRP I think and a backup from one will not work on the other.
I don't know your previous phone so you probably need Odin v3.09 - this sits on PC and lets you flash firmware to the phone. (connected by USB)
For which you need Samsung USB drivers so the PC will recognise the phone. Install on PC before connecting phone.
Then do some browsing and find the processes to root your phone and install the ROM you want. If you just want Stock and access to all your phone, you can root it after flashing the original v5.0 download (from Sammobile or similar site - note on Sammobile you need a free account to DL) and then install Custom recovery (if wanted - it WILL trip the Knox flag but that may not matter given it's 2nd hand and might already be tripped anyway)
Read, make SURE you understand what is being said BEFORE you do anything - ask if you don't.
Good luck...

Hi All, just need a huge help here, a friend of mine has been using a N9005 which was auto restarting, she went online and downloaded this firmware...N900AUCUEOC1_N900AATTEOC1_N900AUCUEOC1_HOME.tar.md5....2.5GB in size...and flashed it, but the phone is stuck in boot loop even after recovery wiping data and cache, the phone can boot into download mode but re flashing the firmware always fails.....is there a solution for this.....please help
Thank you all for the info, especially the detailed info from Journyman16. I checked, and it is flagged as custom, which is fine, so I'm going to go ahead and try to return to mostly stock, update it, and root it.
Ok, everything went well. I had to do two attempts at rooting, but I think it's just one of those things where sometimes it doesn't restart into the process every time.
All seems good. I'm on 5.0, rooted, busyboxed, and smooth sailing.
Thank you all, again, for the tips. The Note 3 is running very well. Thank you to all of the devs that have made this process so refined. I've donated to you before, and did so again today. It's outstanding to have such well versed coders, on XDA, helping out the community.

Hi guys,
I got my Note 4 SM-N910F and installed latest update ROM from sammobile.com, respectively I've upgraded it from 4.4.4 to 5.1.1.
After reboot, I got the following message when restarted:
"This device is locked because of an abnormal factory reset. Sign in to the Samsung account that you have already signed in to on this device to confirm that it belongs to you."
Shortly: Samsung Reactivation Lock Activated
I've tried my Samsung account, on the web it logs in successfully, on my phone it doesn't let me login.
What should I do?
(phone is never locked, bought from Cosmote Romania, now Telekom Romania)
Thanks.
Samsung Reactivation Lock Activated - [ SOLVED ]
Hi guys,
I've succesfully deactivated the Samsung Reactivation Lock on my Samsung Note 4 SM-N910F - Android Lollipop 5.1.1. !!!
I'll tell you in detail how I did it. After 5 hours of data mining and documenting myself, I've gathered all the necessary data to do it.
Statement: On Samsung Note 4 with Lollipop 5.1.1, the Samsung Reactivation Lock cannot be deactivated!
In order to do that you need to downgrade it to KitKat 4.4.4. (thanks to brayhanrd for coming up with this downgrade-first idea in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/reactivation-lock-root-custom-rom-t3097964#post60511431
It can be done following these simple steps:
1) Downgrade the Samsung Note 4 software version from Lollipop 5.1.1 to KitKat 4.4.4 - using the stock 4.4.4 version specifically designed for your phone which can be downloaded from www.sammobile.com.
(Obs: if it was purchased from Verizon then THAT's the version you need to get it. I'm telling you this to avoid a lot of downgrade failures because of mismatch files and Odin writing errors, believe me, I read a lot about it today! )
- Downgrading from Lollipop to KitKat instructions and all the necesarry files to do it (e.g. Odin) can be found here: http://www.androidexplained.com/galaxy-note-4-how-to-downgrade-to-android-4-4-4-kitkat/ (thanks to Doug for documenting this )
If downgrade was successful, it should look like this: http://screencast.com/t/S9ONzxqPvaG
2) A work around to be able to turn off (deactivate) the Samsung Reactivation Lock can be found on this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U23TdbqJehA
- Long story short, the video emphasize what you need to do to get into the phone's Samsung Account, trick the already locked account and re-register yourself with a new (yet existing) Samsung account, which later on, will be seen by Samsung as the phone's default account, thus allowing yourself to register with it. What this guy's doing, basically is using the Text to Speech Samsung update to get logged in to the Samsung Galaxy Apps with this new Samsung account he created (or already had). From there, he gets back to the first phone setup steps and use this Samsung account which will be recognized by Samsung Reactivation Lock as being the default account (because he already signed-in with it into the Samsung Galaxy Apps) and voila, passed the protection.
3) Turn off the Samsung Reactivation Lock: After you tricked the Samsung Lock screen and passed over it reaching the classic, well known home screen, go to -> Settings -> Security -> and find the "Reactivation Lock" option and UNCHECK it! It will ask again for your Samsung account password, insert it and - ONLY THEN - you will have turned off the Samsung Reactivation Lock.
4) Upgrade back to Lollipop 5.1.1: same instructions here, first, upgrade only with stock image made specifically for your Note 4 version, to ba taken from www.sammobile.com or any other respectable place.
If upgrade was successful, it should look like this: http://screencast.com/t/U0BgITnrMmzi
Voila! you have a fully functional Note 4 phone again!
I hope this post will help you spare those 5 hours I used for reseaching these things!

Not possible to downgrade 5.1.1 to 4.4.4
Funny you say you downgraded from 5.1.1 to 4.4.4 because everywhere I've read the consensus is the new bootloader makes this impossible.

Thanks anyway!

You need to download a stock version of 4.4.4. specifically made for your phone version, model and mobile operator.
maybe for the sm-n910f but not the sm-n910p
I greatly appreciated your response, I spent almost the entire day yesterday working on this with no success.
Just so you know, I did in fact download the stock rom made specifically for my sm-910p, here:

I'm on N910PVPU4COG5 now which is Lolipop 5.1.1 now.
I tried downgrading to N910PVPU1ANK2 Kitkat 4.4.4 and no go.
That is definitely the stock firmware for my device.
I did a factory reset & wiped cache first, then tried flashing with odin and after a successful md5 check it failed.
Not sure but maybe because you had the international version the bootloader is different?
But again, I'm sure it didn't work at that seems to be the consensus everywhere else too. that once you go above OB7 there's no going back on the N910P.

Let me help you further because IT IS POSSIBLE. I've done it! Are you sure you read my thread correctly where I've stated that:
You need to download a stock version of 4.4.4. specifically made for your phone version, model and mobile operator.

I would suggest to not give up just yet.
Verify the following:
a) From the page you gave me http://androidromupdate.com/sprint-galaxy-note-4-sm-n910p-stock-firmware/ - I know it sais there It cannot be done, just ignore that - did you installed the Drivers on your computer before you plugged in your phone?
b) Did you tried both 4.4.4. versions available?
c) Did you tried multiple times to flash it? As it opten happens to crash 1,2,3 time until you get it done right. (in between the flashes, try reconnecting the phone to the computer and restarting it).
Try Try Try Again...
Thanks for your advice. I would like to downgrade and so haven't given up just yet; you gave me hope (even a shot in the dark)!

A: Yes, I have installed the drivers on my computer and successfully flashed with odin before and my com port is detected, everything is working on that end. However, I read today someone said they could only use odin 3.10 to flash without it failing so I will try that too.
b) Did you tried both 4.4.4. versions available?
A: No, I'm going to try the older version of KitKat 4.4.4 next, N910PVPU1ANIE
c) Did you tried multiple times to flash it? As it opten happens to crash 1,2,3 time until you get it done right. (in between the flashes, try reconnecting the phone to the computer and restarting it).
A: OK, I will try this and report back.

Samsung Reactivation Bypass Alternative
Hi all,
This is my first posting and reply to a thread. Hope all is doing well.
After many many many attempts to either bypass or deactivate Knox's reactivation lock.. I was finally successful. I"m sure you can imagine how i was jumping up and down..
Any who, here's how i did it:
What you need:
1- An OTG Cable
2- A USB flash drive
3- Samsung Google bypass
First thing I did was factory reset my Verizon Note 4 from the recovery mode.
If you have another android phone available, that would be useful. Take the OTG cable plus it into the extra android phone and plug in your USB flash drive. It will either pop up or ask you to reformat the drive. You want to make sure that the USB flash drive is compatible with android devices. If you don't have an extra phone, reformat your USB flash drive using CMD (format Fat32.)
After that's completed, plug your flash drive into your laptop/desktop and drag the file you downloaded (Samsung google bypass) to your flash drive.
IF YOU CAN'T BEAT THEM, JOIN THEM!
Power on your android phone, after it turns on, plug your OTG cable into your phone and attach your USB flash drive. Wait a few seconds so your phone can recognize the new hardware. A folder from the flash drive should pop. Now run the Samsung Google Bypass file. This will take you to the settings on the phone. Connect to your WiFi.
Click on the Security tab and check "Unknown Sources" and then click ok.
In the same tab> Click on where is says "Go to website". That will open a browser. If for any reason you don't have that option in that tab, in the settings options, click on "Accounts" and add your gmail account to the phone. Go back to the settings options and click on your Google account. We need to get this to the browser.
After clicking on your account, scroll down to where is says "Smart Lock for passwords", go ahead an open that up.
You will see "Google Account" - Click on it. That should take you to a browser.
(If for any reason with those option don't take you to a browser, search the settings section to find a way. THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY)
Now we are almost done!
Download Aptoide> It will ask you all the prompts to install> after its done, click on open.
Download Knox> it will ask you to upgrade> go ahead and upgrade it> after thats done, open up the knox app and create a new account. This will now save to your phone.
You can unplug the OTG cable and restart your phone. But before doing so, make sure that account is was successfully created.
You will go back to set up wizard. Go ahead and set up your phone. You should not have any problems now.
Hope this works for you as it did for me.

Forgot to mention, when you download the Samsung Google bypass, make sure its a APK and if its in a rar file, unzip it.

sm-n910p blocked
Hi guys,
I got my Note 4 SM-N910p and installed latest update ROM from sammobile.com, respectively I've upgraded it from 5.1.1. to 6.0.1.
Note 4 (N910C)
MY phone n910c is running to 6.0.1 Android Version. But i want to costomized Rom to install it.No Recovery is installed because it binary blocked by Reactivation Lock. How is it possible to Turn it off. I tried best but no problem solved.
Help me out to turn off reactivation lock.
Yo, so glad I found this thread. 4.4.4 saved my note 4
Tab 4 (SM-T530NU) 4.4.2 = used ODIN & Flashed Kernel 2 Root w/ Towelroot; Flash back?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 (SM-T530NU) Even though I'm running on 4.4.2., I wasn't able to ROOT using Towelroot.APK B/C the Kernel is A0A2. So, following the directions on a website (posted at the bottom of this post) I found my device's Model_ROOT.Kernel.Tar.md5 and it's Model_Kernel.Tar.md5 files the webpage stated I needed in order to ROOT my device via ODIN.
Using ODIN, I was successful in flashing the downloaded ROOT.Kernel.tar.md5 file. After completing the next step I was able to successfully gain ROOT privileges by opening TowelRoot.apk & clicking "Make it Rain"
I used a random Root Checker app I downloaded from the Google Play Store to verify whether or not Towelroot succeeded in ROOTING my device.
YEAH!! I HAVE SUPER USER PERMISSIONS!!
I was so excited to have ROOT access after several days of continuous research that I never proceeded to the final steps on the aforementioned website's tutorial. I didn't use Model.Kernel.tar.md5 to flash my device back. Know it's been 2-3 days since I ROOTED my Tab 4 & to the best of my knowledge, I haven't experienced too many relative issues other than both Lucky Patcher & Freedom apps have been unsuccessful when I attempt to get free In-App Purchases from other Apps & Games. Normally I would just uninstall both apps and shrug 'em off as being incompatible with my device but within the past 8-10 months, I've used both of these apps on 2 of my previously ROOTED devices & they both worked correctly from the start. Not to mention that one of those happened to be another Tab 4 which was the same Make & Model of the Tab 4 10.1 SM-T530NU I'm currently using & writing about - the only differences between the two is their SEstatus & their Kernels: Old Tab4 had Permissive SEstatus & the Kernel ended in AND1 while this new one is set to Enforcing SEstatus and it's Kernel ends in A0A2)
I have a few questions related to the information you just read in this Thread:
* Did I really f**k up when I 4got to Flash back after Rooting w/ Towelroot? (If so, what steps do I take)
* How do I get L.P. & Freedom.apk to work correctly? (Does having 'Enforcing' SE Linux Status an issue? Either way, I would like to know how I can switch my SEstatus to 'Permissive')
* How can I Factory Reset my Tab4 running on Kitkat 4.4.2 without losing ROOT access?)
SITE I USED AS A STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL TO HELP ME ROOT MY CURRENT TAB 4:
w0lfdroid DOT com (without spaces) /2014/09/TowelRoot-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-S5-and-Note3-Android-4.4.2-NF-or-Later DOT html
If anyone requires any additional information to be able to answer all/any of my Questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thanks a Million,

1) Yes. Flash the OA2 kernel the same way you did the root kernel
2) See my answer to your first question. SE Linux has nothing to do with this. If you want SE Status permissive, install a custom kernel or a custom rom
3) You can't

Hello group!
I have a question before getting started with my new phone
DETAILS:
from "About Phone"
Android version: 6.0.1
Baseband version: G935VVRU4API3
Kernel version: 3.18.20
Build number MMB29M.G935VVRU4API3
I have not yet entered my google credentials, no wifi access points, and the phone is in "Airplane Mode". I expect that a Verizon system update (to Nougat?) will start soon after I turn off airplane mode & enable wifi.
I HAVE on my Win10x64 computer, properly installed Samsung drivers, installed Samsung Smart Switch, did a test backup (settings only), enabled developer mode (phone) and turned on USB debugging (phone)
I'm upgrading from a rooted Galaxy S4 (running Android 4.3), and although I plan to root my new S7E in the future, I think I will run stock for awhile. Although I did no rom installs on the S4, (had safestrap & a small rom installed in one of the partitions, but rarely used it), I will miss TiBu for a while, Tasker advanced stuff, root options in the AutoApps suite.
I also understand removing bloatware is a little easier these days for unrooted phones.
QUESTION:
Is there any recommendation that I should do/save/copy/settings to this phone before I continue?
After reading the MM & N threads on rooting (great work) I believe I can root in the future using Odin, ADB, etc.
Actually, as I read this, I'm thinking, "This is a stupid question, the phone is unrooted, I can't provide anything useful to the group!"
But, any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

You can try using smartswitch on your phone. Go to to the Samsung apps store and download smart switch. I think that will help you transfer stuff to your new device.
If you are wanting to backup your s7 you need to download smartswitch on your computer and do a backup.
it will save settings, apps, and other things for you.
If you are wanting to restore information onto your phone when you first set it up it should have mentioned something about a transfer where you would've touch the two phones together using NFC and they would transfer settings and other info.

Thanks zimgir124,
I did install the smartswitch on the PC, and it backed up both the S4 & S7 pretty well. It would not backup my sms though (perhaps because the file is huge, goes back to 2010)
As for transferring settings, the NFC transfer sounded interesting, but I chose to redo the apps manually. I really wanted to keep only my sms, mms, & call log, so I used MyBackup Pro (since I couldn't use TiBu) which worked splendidly.
Using 4g only (wifi not yet enabled), I re-installed many of the apps individually, & set them up from scratch. Then I started learning the ins & outs of Android 6. This is SO different from the 4.3 I am used to!
Once I was comfortable, I connected to my home wifi network. Sure enough, within 15 minutes, the phone was prompting me to download & update to Android 7.0
To this point, the phone is running very smoothly, and the battery life is pretty good. This is my first android phone where the battery is not user replaceable. I also miss the IR blaster on the Galaxy S4. I saw no reports of it being added to the new S8 (which is why I chose the older, less expensive S7E)
I read your continuing guide on rooting, and I'm sure I'll take the plunge (again)
Again, thank you for your response
Chris
