NFC & magnetic mount - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Does anyone know which portion of the S7 Edge produces the NFC signal? I'm hoping I'll be able to place the
small metal disc for my magnetic car mount away from it, so I can still make NFC payments. I love the convenience of
a magnetic mount, and it'd be a shame if I can't use it, especially since I've only had mine for a month.

Pull up the manual. I think its top of phone next to camera if memor serves correctly..
Look at Rokform. They have awesome set up and says not to interfere with nfc... but only if you are doing s7 they dont do edge
I used on my s5 and loved them.

I dunno but I had to give it up on my Note Edge with my magnetic mount... I'll have to stop using it as I plan on using the wireless charging and I'm sure it won't work

Don't think that one is magnetic. Usually it's wireless charging it magnetic, not both.

I've never had the 'micro suction' or gel grip or what etc work well after a few weeks. Not saying this one won't be good, but I've never had luck with the technology.

Its it the wa it mounts to the cat that doesn't work. It's how it hold the phone to the mount (not magnets, but a suction foam).

Your really not understanding, I must not be explaining well.
With the cd mount, you place a fake cd in your cd player, and put the charger/phone holder onto this fake cd. I understand this. What I am asking for is a difference charger/phone holder that uses magnets instead of the micro suction foam used on the one you linked.
So yes there is an accessory section, yes you can change the large suction cup holding the charger/phone holder (the base of the mount). What I want is different. I don't need to change the base, I need to change the actual product that holds the phone.

This product use magnetic field to hold and wireless charge your phone. “Inside the Air Dock are magnets that pull the phone tightly into the foam face. ” I believe for wireless build in phone you don't really need take advantage of micro suction then it can holds your phone. As other post mentioned magnetic cd mount can hold samsung s7 edge without any issue. So as long as there is magnets build into this dock. I don't think microsuction is really necessary for samsung s7 edge to be hold tightly on this dock.

No problem. It's quite expensive though. If you search wireless charge with magnetic. You probably can find some cheaper option.

I have previously checked a display unit and the S7e has something magnetic inside, more or less in the center, so it should be possible to mount it on a magnet-holder without sticking a metal plate onto the back. Still waiting for my own pre-ordered unit, so I have not actually tried in my car, but it seemed just as magnetic as my LG G4 with a metal plate under the leather back.

magnetic mount S7
Not sure if this is mentioned elsewhere, but just picked up the S7 Edge last night and I can use it with my magnetic mount out of the box. Not sure what they have going on behind the back cover, but its enough metal to hold nicely with the same mount I was using with my note 4.

Magnetic mount works fine on my S7 edge even through a Ringke TPU case. Very surprised because I had this exact same concern because it didn't work on my Note 4 or my S6. The must have put more metal behind the glass on the S7's

Hi!
Any issues with the phone after using the magnetic mount? and is there enough power in the magnet to hold the phone in place even on a bumpy road?
Thanks!

I bought this magnetic mount from amazon last December.

I've tried my S7e with it with and without a case and it works great. No metal plate needed. Although it seems less effective with a case on my phone.

Official Docks for Defy?

Anyone tried putting a magnet next to the back of their Defy?
I have this leather case for an old XDA I used to have, which has a magnet built in to clasp the strap closed.
When I put the defy in, it came up with a multimedia dock interface!
Also, putting the magnet at another point puts it into the car windscreen dock interface.
I looked on the Motorola website for the accessories, but they list the milestone multimedia/windscreen docks under the Defy accessories.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Milestone's usb port is in the wrong place to fit?
Yes, the milestone won't fit. I'm waiting for a desk-stand, too

Problem is, it'll switch into car mode every time you use that...
magnet polarity
Turn the polarity of magnet!
If you put the magnet same place like in the car mount (behind of the menu button), but with reversed polarity. The phone runs the media home instead of car home.
I understand that's how it works.
Thing is, how easy is to to get to the magnet?
Are you likely to end up ruining or breaking the dock whilst trying to remove and reinsert it?
If you don't want the magnet to work, can't you put the phone in upside down? Most of my apps work fine inverted. I realize that puts the usb on top...
I just bought a cheap mount from China on eBay now. No magnet

Me too + my eye's

Car/Desk Mode magnet trigger.

So, after about a month the charging port on my car dock broke out of the dock, making it pretty much useless. I figured I'm going to try to just find a cheap dock somewhere else that I can use and can just plug a normal charger into the phone. The one thing that the official car dock does, which isn't done on cheap universal docks was that it had a magnet which would trigger car mode in the phone. After a bit of searching, I finally found the spot using a small magnet that I found at work. What is most interesting about the magnetic trigger is that based on the polarity of the magnet, it can activate either the car dock or the desktop dock. Right now I've just got one magnet, and I don't know the polarity on it, but it works. I have uploaded a picture with a small piece of tape on the spot where the trigger is. I'm not sure how strong the magnet needs to be, but it may need to be a bit stronger than the average refrigerator magnet. I'm probably going to go buy a few and some super glue and see what I can do as far as a homemade dock.
Good find

Well they are in Canada (I think). And there is a Richmond Hill in Canada.
EDIT: And @flashallthetime is from Canada.
Speaking of car mode, anyone able to activate car/dock mode simply by touching their Moto X in a certain way? Sometimes I'll pick it up or simply shift/change hands and some type of mode is somehow activated where the screen darkens and displays a clock. It happens somewhat infrequently and I'm never able to replicate it... I don't even own a car or desk dock, let alone put it in one... it always happens by hand and always accident.

I have a moto skip and can easily put the phone into car or desk mode with it.. If you line the end of the skip up with the sim card tray and put the small magnet just past the edge of the phone, smooth side activates desk mode, suede side turns on auto version.
Looks like this can be done with any magnet. Just tried with a random one I had laying around and it enabled car mode.

I don't think it does. Assist will announce incoming calls and texts, but that's not the same as car mode. I don't see any real benefit to car mode any longer since android no longer changes the behavior of the home button when in car mode.
For me, I don't see the benefit of desk mode either, since Motorola insists on ignoring the orientation sensors and displaying the clock in portrait mode regardless of the device orientation. I had the opposite problem with my Bionic - in the car dock it would only display in landscape orientation, even if the phone itself was in a portrait orientation.

Yes, it does.
Car Mode can also auto-launch a Car Home application (such as Car Home Ultra); unfortunately, as mentioned, Android will not relinquish control of the home button to a Car Home Launcher, which limits the usefulness of such a UI.
I am really excited to learn about these magnet sensors. That's really cool. I hope that Motorola creates their own docks. And if they don't, I certainly will create my own.
Thanks for the information.:good:
Put a Neo button magnet on the back of my Slip grip car mount and it works great. Now I have an NFC tag stuck to the mount for unlocking the phone and the magnet turns car mode on. I also found the old OG Moto Droid car mode apk and I'm using that instead of Car home Ultra...I like the simplicity of the old car mode.
I bought some 1/8" by 1/16" Warhammer magnets on eBay and cannot for the life of me get Car Mode to activate. Anyone have any issues or know what I might be missing?
Wish we could set something up to allow us to launch a certain app when moto assist activates the driving mode. Silly, you can launch a music app but no app of choice. That would allow us to eliminate the magnet all together.

I have thought of a way, at least for me and how I use it, as a workaround that hasn't been tested, but should work fine.
With Tasker, I was going to setup a profile that 2 things have to happen to trigger it. One, phone is plugged into car charger. Two, headset is plugged in (my aux input on my car). Once these 2 things have happened together, not just separately, I will trigger Car Mode to activate, which will then run Car Home Ultra. I think this will work out great for me with how I use it.

The cover is really, really annoying. Especially for me, who uses bluetooth through my car speakers for my main music stuff. So each time I get in the car I plug the phone into the 12 volt. And each time, I have to pry open that cover. The worst part is, it doesn't even stay open! I also just got my Incipio dual layer protection case in the mail and now its even harder to get the charging cover off. It's really aggravating. I don't even think it closes correctly either. It always looks like its not snapped down all the way. Just, bleh. Most annoying quirk on the 4 Samsung phones I've owned.
just get the spare battery charge kit so you never have to mess with it. Its also a better means of going from zero to 100 than wireless charger

Yeah I'm not really sure what to do here. I have a bunch of 3D models for phone docks / car docks / etc for the gs3 and gs4, the battery cover is a total nuisance on the gs5, especially because it doesn't really stay open after you open it (I'm trying to imagine how to go about designing a dock for this thing).
I do 3D modeling and have a 3D printer, if anyone has an idea for an improvement... holler. I doubt we'll see any kind of other 3rd party replacement otherwise as it's attached to the phone and clearly involved with waterproofing. not sure if it's worth the trade-off!
anywho guess I'll be giving wireless charging a try again...

Yeah definitely good that it's easy to do that - personally I'm not really upset or frustrated; it's awesome to add waterproofing - I'm just trying to puzzle out the best way to keep the feature while also making the phone easy to slide into a dock (preferably with one hand), you know?

Magnet turns screen on/off

Not by conventional methods. Its called "hall effect" and there is not a setting to turn this sensor off
This is something that has been long implemented in phones.
For instance my old OG Droid. If you bought the car dock that Moto made for the phone. It had a thin magnet in the cradle that was used to tell the phone to enter Car Mode. Or if you had the charging desk cradle. It would enter the Clock mode.
Is there any way to disable this? (kernel or rom?

Also works great with sleeves that have a magnet for a pullout strap. Although it also turns on the screen when you slide the phone in.

The case doesn't have a magnet in it, it just has thin metal plates so it works with magnetic car mounts. So I really don't think it will interfere with the SPen at all. They also made the case for previous Note models with no issues.
Best or not ???

I ran into some weird behavior with my Note 8 and the mag mount. If I set the device too far to the left, the magnet did interfere with the sensor that says the S-Pen is removed, and small tweaks would happen all by itself. It would instantly go away when I moved the device to the right position. Nothing harmful though.

I absolutely hate clip style car mounts and have always used the magnetic style car mounts.
That's an issue with wireless charging (if you get a case with a metal plate built in) take the case off, put the case on, take the case off, put the case on, and I only use thin fit cases, basically not to scratch the back of the phone when I set it down.
Pitaka setup solves all the problems.
I just found out about them with my S10+
Is the case compatible with wireless charging with the metal plates installed?
Also, their website doesn't show any cases for the Note 10. Did you say you actually ordered one?

It's a nice case but shipping starting 15 business days after phone starts shipping isn't exactly going to bode well. Most will want to have their cases in hand by date of receipt (of the phone, in hand) at least if not before.

When I ordered it said 10 days, I just looked again and do see it's been changed to 15.
I ordered a cheap clear case from Amazon for the time being.
My OnePlus 7 Pro is on the left of the case and my S10+ is on the right.

Thanks. One more question: Does Samsung pay still work with this case? I use that all the time so that would be a deal breaker for me.

I use Samsung Pay on my S10+ with this case with zero issues.

Ok, yeah that's not a big deal to me then. I love the case and MagMount car charger on my S10+.

Do you use the Pitaka MagMount for charging in the car, or a different one?
Does it fast charge well?

Yes, I use the MagMount. Wireless fast charging works fine. Every once in a while I will need to move the phone slightly for it to change from charging to fast charging, but that's like once every 10 times or so.
