How does everyone feel about Samsung disabling the adaptable storage feature of Marshmallow? Wonder how hard it would be to re-enable once Rooted?

LOVED that SD card was able to be a simple mass storage, but stupid me updated to 6.0.1 out of retarded curiosity and now that feature I hated Samsung for killing off is once again MIA. MUST have this back if possible.
I don't think the Priv ever had USB Mass Storage mode,that was removed back in ICS.

Regarding the App2SD feature, is that hardware or software specific? I mean isn't there 'any' way to have it, even on a custom rom like CM? or is it bound by hardware?

You can use an app like Link2SD or use MicroSD as internal storage, but be sure to use a fast microSD.
If I remember correctly, in EMUI the internal storage for microSD it's disabled by default, so you have to search how to activate it.

However I read somewhere that in EMUI 5 (Android 7), adoptable storage for microSD will be supported.

Hello, i'm new to the forums so i apologize if i shouldn't be posting this here, but i need help.
I have a Samsung Galaxy On7 with Android Marshmallow 6.0.1. I was happy with the phone and liked everything it had to offer me, except for one critical flaw that is driving me nuts: IT'S STORAGE.
I started downloading my apps so i could transfer them to my 16Gb SD card, which i happily bought for the purpose of this new phone... But little did i know that simple storaging concept changed with Android Marshmallow (before this phone i've only used Lollipop and KitKat). Apps weren't automatically being placed in the SD card. Fine, i could move them myself anyway, right? But it only transferred about 10 or 15 Mbs... Useless. My phone was struggling after installing WhatsApp and Messenger just because i couldn't move them from the phone storage, and 5 out of 8 Gbs of phone storage were occupied by bloatware. I could just root it and delete those, but i use more than 8 Gbs anyway so i considered that option meaningless.
I naturally did research on what options i had to fix this. Tutorials listed an option which "merges" your SD card and use it as internal storage. Now God knows why Samsung decided to get rid of that option, i simply don't have it.
I figured i could install a Nougat ROM but i never installed a ROM before, and the fact that i have a Samsung might mean the problem still persists after that, so maybe i could just downgrade to Lollipop and problem solved. I just need to hear from someone it's going to work before trying it myself.
If there are more options i'd be more than happy to listen to them, i'm at the point where i can't update apps anymore, while i have 16 Gigs unused...
that's the sad thing about this device. it's internal storage is not much and it got some bloatware. I just stayed on minimal user installed apps. Also moving an app to sd card is reducing the apps performance.
Actually there's a solution for the merging SD storage with Internal storage problem. Although Samsung has disabled it there's a patch here in the Forum to bypass that.

I used it on mine and worked just fine.
One more thing. I actually opted for two solutions: (1) root and uninstall bloatware and (2) apply the patch through TWRP and merge the storages.

I highly recommend not doing it. I have rooted my Samsung on7 (G600FY) only to use this resource but it didn't work.
I could install the patch through TWRP but there were no options on Settings -> Storage -> Format SD as Internal. Only Portable Format was available. Then, after some searches I could do it with Root Essentials App, it did the trick but still all my apps were getting installed in the internal memory (even I did migration to SD), also it kept showing Full Storage messages like before (even tough there was more than 29gb free after the "merge").
Back to 0.

I was having same problem with this device. But now I have fixed it!
Before storage was 97% and I have only 2 apps: Mozilla FireFox and Samsung Max VPN.
And my all other apps and games were in SD card.
But now I have 88% storage (just reduced a good amount)
Its simple just open Settings > Applications > Applications Manager
Now pick those apps which you don't use them anymore. Like Chrome, Google Photos, Samsung Internet, GDrive, etc.
Select on those app and click on 3 dot > select "Uninstall Updates".
When you do this, the app will be uninstalled and replaced by factory version of app which is lower in size.
Just do these to apps like GDrive, GPhotos because you can access them on web too.

If I am not mistaken that feature has been removed by Samsung on the stock firmware for the T580. If I remember when I google it I found something talking about rooting your tablet and instaling a custom boot imge. They way I got it to work was just by installing a custom rom like Lineage OS.

Thanks, srgrusso. I guess Samsung wants us to buy newer higher capacity devices. I discovered on my Galaxy S7 that triggering Developer Options allowed me to transfer most of the apps to the SD card. So, I think that will suffice for the present, and when I pay off both the SM-T580 and SM-G930V then I will root them. Thanks for the link. Will just rooting the devices allow me to gain the ability to use a SD card as internal storage, or will I also have to install a custom ROM?

I never did understand why Samsung makes us pay such high prices for average devices full of bloat with next to nothing for storage space. I would recommend a custom ROM unless you like the stock firmware. After I installed my custom ROM I found that I didn't really need the adoptable storage because I gained a couple of gigs of space back do to the fact that I lost all the bloat and bs of the stock firmware. The stock firmware is ridiculously huge and a space hog. I don't know for sure but I think you would still have to patch the stock firmware. I also seen people mention an app called App2SD I don't know much about it though. Thanks for the info and the links. I found some instructions that allow me to transfer some apps to the SD card in my Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930V). The instructions are to enable Developer Options, by tapping on the Build Number 7 times, when Developer is enabled, then go to Developer Options, and enable "force allow apps on external ". This has allowed me to gain about 5 GB of internal storage. I think that this will help me until I root the phone and install a custom ROM. Thanks for all your advice and help.

Absolutely nothing to do with that and neither does that statement make sense.
Samsung STILL release low capacity budget devices. It wouldn't make sense to release them if they didn't want people to buy them.
Samsung are simply trying to cater for all corners of the market, from budget to Flagships.
Samsung had good reason to remove adoptable storage and in part agree with the decision. However I don't believe it should have been removed entirely, the choice should have been the consumers with a clear stern warning if it used.
The reason?
Basically performance.
Adoptable storage relies on much slower memory.
Samsungs internal NAND memory is way faster read and certainly write than any SD CARD/ flash media.
Even Samsung budget devices use high performance NAND memory.
From Samsungs point of view it would be pointless releasing a device, especially a flagship, with high performance specs and then bottle neck it with relatively slow memory.
All that would happen is that all over the web and forums there'd be people whinging and whining about the performance of their device and how slow it is. Particularly the gaming community and those with higher spec devices.
There'd be countless calls to Samsung support by people questioning the performance of their devices.
It boils down to the fact that many people do not understand what adoptable storage is and how it works.
I created the adoptable storage patch because I believe people should be given the choice. However I don't recommend using it.
I certainly don't, I just manage my storage better.
There's no point in whinging about how much storage capacity the device has.
It's all there in the specs before anyone buys the device.
Yes I agree there is far too much bloat in some of Samsungs roms and this wastes capacity.
However Samsung are learning and Tbh they've slimmed down TouchWiz alot in recent OS releases.
I did it on my Redmi Note 8T 32GB. Just flash the ZIP file which I attached here in Recovery and then you will be able to format SD card as Internal Storage.
*** If it is not working, you must need to FORMAT DATA to delete the encryption, so before of that - make a backup of all your files ***
I tested it on Android 13 and it is working perfectly.
Then you can use for example an app: APP2SD (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd) from Google Play to move apps to adopted storage (SD CARD)
