LG G5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S7 - Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

The LG G5 and the Galaxy S7 have both been announced and reviewed hands on.
What are your opinions on both of the devices and which one will you most likely get?
I saw some of the comments about the LG G5 and its design being shot down. The design is impressive for the LG G5 being modular with a battery and removable battery. I'm torn between the two devices. Basically in my opinion, it comes down to software and design. The Galaxy S7 has superior design compared to the LG G5 including expandable storage but will the software eventually lag the device down? Each have their own pros and cons. Let's hear your opinions?

I have an LG G2, waited for the G5 because the G3 and G4 were too large for me, and finally preordered the Galaxy S7 Edge.
Why: I expected the G5 to be smaller than the G3 and G4. But surprise: alhough it does have a smaller screen, it is actually only 0.7mm narrower than the G3 and 2mm narrower than the G4,
while being taller and thicker than the G4 (!).
I also expected the G5 to have a larger battery, but another surprise: a measly 2800 mAh unit, although removable but really very small. I don't care for removable batteries, I never used them and I am not planning to keep charging spare batteries.
The Galaxy S7 Edge is narrower than the G5 by 1.5mm (!) and it also has a 3600 mAh battery. Plus it comes with a free Gear VR headset, which I was planning to buy anyway.
For me, battery life is the most important feature, followed by a good notification system (always-on screen + notification LED). The LG G5 falls short in the battery life department and also size department.
While the G2 had the narrowest bezels in the business and largest battery, the G5 has the thickest bezels from all flagships and the smallest battery. Sorry LG, but you lost me as a customer.

Prefer @ Cst79's view.
Already he gave details.
The clear thinking is Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 are mostly updated but I like Samsung Galaxy S7.

Thread should be deleted.

LG G5 vs LG G4

In this topic discuss about this 2 devices. Are you satisfied to see lg's new phone? How is new UI compare to G4? Does G5's modules worth?
If you ask me : The design of g5 simply awful than g4. Probably the build quality is better. New UI not bad at all. Only thing that i didn't like is that, there is no app drawer on G5. It is interesting to see mew modules on G5 but for me, i don't need to use them.
Hands-on videos made me change idea about this new G5:
It seems to be a very good phone and the new UI is quite fashinating to me
(But launcher icons are ugly, ahah :silly
I don't appriciate new design (the front), but that would be confortable to use, IMHO
Think they should have stuck to 5.5 inch but guess their thinking is 5.3 inch phone is nearer size of most of the flagship phone competition, so in theory more likely to sell more units. Whether in reality that's the situation only time will tell
The smaller display means no G5 for me....5.5in is the smallest display I will go for these days.
I'm going to see what the S7 Edge looks like (on paper and in-hand)...the rumoured 5.7in screen with the curves might feel like a 5.5in device without the curves. The battery and waterproofing I'm hearing about has me interested in this product, and the Note 5 has much better outdoor brightness so I'm hoping that will carry forward to the S7 series.
If the S7 Edge does not do it for me ergonomically, then I'll see what the V11/Note 6 has to offer later this year, or if I get impatient maybe the Nexus 6P (but the 6P might not be much of an upgrade for me over the G4).
Personally,im not very impressed with the new G5.
I'll wait for the g6
Also waiting for the G6. Or the new nexus, we'll see how it compares.
Most likely, bootloader unlock will be impossible, so for me it's a no go (but that's subject to change if development takes off)

Can't see many people buying modules. After all your gonna need to take case off of you want to use them, and how many people are going to want to risk dropping their brand new phone without a case on. I just can't see it taking off anyhow, don't see that's whatwhat the majority of people want from a phone.
And the metal premium body looks pain ugly imo. May have well stuck with plastic/leather.

Sure, they should've used 5.5" screen, but that raises one important question: How big do you think the G5 would be if they used 5.5"? I look at it this way, G2 had 5.2" and one of the best screen-to-body ratios ever. Now the G5 has 5.3" screen while at the same time being taller than the G4 and having a smaller battery... Not impressed at all . They are fishing in the dark, experimenting too much and instead of focusing on the important stuff (soc, screen, camera, battery, design), they introduce some gimmicky "friends" whom practically nobody will use as they will probbably cost 50% of the price of G5. I'm a bit dissapointed...

Well, I'd be the first to get a module for a bigger battery. And you can't see people using it? Yeah I mean, it's that much better that we basically get clone after clone of the S6 or 6S that are just sealed off and "premium". LG is literally the only company that is actually trying to innovate stuff and do something different. I watched the S7 conference and it was like watching any Apple press conference ever. A lot of fancy words with a lot of bull**** behind it. As for the case, I've had an iPhone 4, iPhone 5, G3 and now a G4 and I have yet to put a case on any of my phones. And no, they don't look like they've been trough hell and back.

That is true, the screen to body ratio just gets worse. And how didn't they focus on the important stuff? You have a brighter screen, the 820 SOC, a better camera (or at least equivalent to the V10/G4), a premium metal design (looks nice to me). The only thing that sucks is the smaller battery, but then again, maybe the 820 will compensate for it with better efficiency? Who knows, we'll see.
Feature wise it's alright. No worse than my current G4 (didn't use QSlide or, really, any of the LG additions), but the smaller screen, lack of an app drawer (which, I know, can be compensated for with a 3rd party launcher; then again I would've wanted to give the stock launcher a go), and, most of all, a hideous design are the reasons why I would not get the G5 (moreover, I own the G4 for just under five months). Wonder what they come up with next, but if I had to make the switch now, it most likely would not be a G5.
Small battery, no back buttons, small screen, hideous bulge at the back, friends without benefits , nice idea with modular build but afraid to see "my modular hole entry display broken" like comments......
No go for me. Waiting for next year. Except the SD 820 nothing worth spending so much money.
We have to add a bigger space and pay for Bang & Olufsen module to have a good quality sound ? We don't have to do this with other devices like Meizu or HTC or others devices, Stoopid LG...
G2 and g3 was small diference and no need to upgrade from g2 to g3, g2 to g4 yes, same as g4 to g5 - NO g4 to g6 - yes , simple
I'm done with LG after the G4 because of its issues, mostly the bootloop.
If I wasn't, LG lost me at a smaller screen, smaller battery, and removing the buttons from the back.
Everything was going great until I realized that I need to turn off the phone, remove the battery and turn it on again if I want to listen to music using a 3.5mm headset.
Not that pretty (camera protrusion?), but a metal body is nice.
Size - not a big deal to me, as I use both the G4 and V10 and don't seem to have a preference in terms of size
Camera - interesting having two rear cameras, thou I doubt I would care. The dual fronts on the V10 are actually somewhat useful (group vs single selfies)
No volume button on the back, that I don't like so much
Module addons? Another meh for me, personally. Replaceable battery is good.
UI? meh. I use google now anyhoo. the G4 and V10's uis are ok, though.
I'd take one if it were free, maybe. Dunno If I would upgrade to one, though.

My mistake, for a moment, I thought that the top-mounted 3.5mm jack was just the IR blaster.

Upgrade from G4, but to what?

So due to some problems with the quality (bootloop, severe ghosting, etc.) I got refunded,
now the thing is I really loved this phone, the camera was amazing, the screen was crisp and the device looked and felt premium.
What I am most worried about is I don't seem to see a phablet that definitely is an upgrade in terms of camera quality.
The Note 7 first scratches and then explodes, the iPhone 7 Plus 128gb costs 1009 Euro in Europe and besides those two I don't really know any 5,5 inch or bigger that definitely beat the G4 in cam quality
Any suggestions? Anyone upgraded from the G4? If yes, to what? How does the cam compare?

G5 seems to tick all the boxes on your check list.
-Great Camera
-Great Screen
-Metallic,slim and premium
Though a number of short coming too. Actually I read that LG were pretty disappointed with the sales they have so far registered.
Personally would go for Nexus 6p or wait for LG V20
I'd recommend Oneplus 3. Had it for a day now and don't think I'll use my G4 anymore.
Bought my 1+3 it at the same time as I sent my G4 to warranty repair, it was rooted and bootloader unlocked etc.
Still got it repaired for free. (replaced motherboard) But no G4 for me anymore, guess I'll keep it as a spare.

Haven't had the time to try too much, but the few shots I have taken on auto settings, look great. It has a manual mode too, but it hasn't got so many settings as the G4.
I will try to switch to sammy, after doing the g2/g3/g4. Sever ghosting and poor battery....S7 edge has it all, great battery, great camera, beautiful design, water and dust proof....
What about the Axon 7?
Get the samsung galaxy note 4 i know its old but has qhd and removable battery and sd card and has a lot of roms
Note 7 has a nice overall size... Overpriced iphone territory , but with the rep it is currently getting, a price drop will be right around the corner since fire hazard doesn't scream flagship lol
I d prefer S6 EDGE.
xiaomi 3s 4000mah battery and im ok...
I think the V20 would be a very good replacement for the G4.
Very good hardware and specs for the price you have to pay.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, V20 is not available in my country yet and I don't know if it will be but it is interesting. Note 7 seems to not be liked at airlines so I would avoid that. I am thinking about the Oneplus 3.
What worries me the most is that I wouldnt really like a downgrade in the camera department. G4 made great shots even when it was a bit dark!

One plus three takes good shots overall. In my opinion the camera was the weakest point of the 1+3. Software and XDA support is amazing. And the price point is almost unbeatable for the specs you receive.

I had G4 H815. Than the radio died and I've sent it for repair. It took them about two months to repair it. In the meantime I was looking for a replacement. The OnePlus 3 was the first thought, but the camera shots are nowhere near G4 in my opinion. It had AMOLED screen which bleeds my eyes with saturation . Samsung also uses their AMOLED screens which I don't like at all, but the camera is comparable. Nexus 6P is also amazing phone, maybe the best replacement for G4 regarding camera and premium feel. Also other Huawei flagship phones.
I ended up returning to my beloved G4 as nothing compares to leather, 5.5" IPS screen and great camera.
I'm waiting for a Pixel, but I'm a bit concerned that it would be with AMOLED screen also

Well I did switch to s7 edge. Build quality is from another world (tho I bought spigen case, just as for all the lg series I owned) screen is something you need to experience yourself. And it's the first phone I dont feel the need to root! Yesterday with 3hrs20min Sot I still had battery left 40%! You can't beat that, actually you can't beat any of the sammy features! G4 photos still look better but the autofocus of s7 is a unbelievable fast! I feelt in love with lg2 back then after owning s4 and they ruined it! Such a shame

Exactly, in good light the +3 camera is competitive with the best out there but once light starts to get low, the +3 won't compete with the G4.The 6P is better than the +3 camera. But i still give the edge to the G4 over the 6P.
This isn't surprising when its built to such a tight budget. +3 is for people that are not too serious about camera. About price, performance. 3rd party support.
Oh and there is no microsd on the +3 either.

6P is the closest you can get. But you can't take too many shots one after the other. If you can consider the 6P then i don't see why the s7e or s7 cannot be an options .better cameras than the 6P. Te downside is because they use 12MP 4:3 sensor for some strange reason, if you want 16:9 aspect your resolution drops to 9MP. That will lose in some cases to native 16:9 16MP on the LG's.
The edge variant has the option for clip on lenses. The advantage here is you get wide angle or 2x zoom AND retain OIS with the f1.7 aperture. Something neither LG nor apple can do with their secondary cameras but then you don't have to carry extra lenses.
If i was in your shoes and maybe i will be one day, my options are another G4 for less than i paid the first time (such a unique phone in so many ways) or the G6. There will never be another phone like the G4, tapering edges, slight curve, good feel in the hand, leather etc.
The G6 i expect will get the sensor upgrade. G4, V10, G5, V20, g flex 3? all use the same sensor. The software has improved but the sensor remains the same. This is how LG does things. It was the same with G2 up to G flex 2.

Why choose this phone ?

Hey guys,
why choose a P10 over a G6 or the Samsung ? What benefits do you get of the P10 ? No water resistant.... small display.....
EMUI and the camera. For a photographer (instagram.com/austriker) huawei has put a ton of slick UI and camera features in the phone. I can't wait to get one.
Also I am sick of Samsung, I need a pause.....
Had Samsung phones before, they're good but bloated and there's nothing striking about the new one.
Read/watched reviews of both the G6 and the P10 Plus, G6 is more expensive for little gain. The 0.2" diagonal difference is not something you're going to notice in use, wireless charging is a nice idea but not a deal breaker. Going by the reviews LG's camera is not so good and it has a smaller battery.
P10P has stereo speakers and Corning Gorilla glass 5 as opposed to 3 on the LG (no idea if that's better or not)
I am dumping my awful LG G5 (GPS problems fixed then screen ghosting - had enough!) for the P10 Plus - arrives this Wednesday... can't wait!

Samsung? sick of it! LG phones are good but the battery life sucks.
I changed to P10+ because of its EMUI, the beautiful 2K mon, the feel in my hand and the camera.
I hate the curved edges - I like my screen flat all the way across. Also, I wanted to try something with color (other than black, white, blue, or silver) and the only phone with options is apple. Not a big IPhone fan. I know the p10 is a little reminiscent, but at least there's an option to get the app drawer back!

G4 owners upgrading to G6: happy with purchase?

I have the LG G4 and was considering the upgrade to G6. Verizon customer.
1. How do the cameras compare? The rear is supposed to be better by all accounts. Front camera is 5 MP on G6 and 8 MP on G4, is this a downgrade in photo quality? Perhaps not since MP is not everything.
2. How does the battery life compare?
3. Is a case important on G6? Seems necessary with all that glass. G4 was excellent for handling falls due to leather or plastic back and slight curve in screen.
Downsides are loss of IR blaster and no more removable battery. Any other losses upgrading G4 to G6?
One more thing, the Galaxy S8 can stretch youtube videos to fullscreen but I get the impression the G6 does not have this ability, is that correct?

I upgraded from a G3 to a G6 on Sprint. I haven't had it long enough to answer all your questions, but I can offer a little input.
The battery life is significantly better. Obviously, there is a lot of degradation given the G3 is several years old, but I went out and bought a new G3 battery a year ago. The G6 gets me through a whole day easy. I do use an Android Wear watch to triage notifications, so I have a less than average screen time on the phone, but I'll go running using the phone's GPS in the morning or do an hour of lifting with the screen on the whole time inputting into an exercise app, etc. The fast charge on the G6 is amazing. It is multiples faster charging than the G3. I also bought a wireless charger, which is great to set on my desk at work.
I think a case is important. The glass back is gorgeous, but I've only seen it for about 10 seconds once while I held it 6 inches over a plush carpet to install the case. I dunno. I put on a Spigen carbon case, and it does not add much bulk to the phone. I had a Spigen on my G3 for three years and it looked like it went through a war. The G3 looks pristine.
Lack of IR blaster wasn't a problem for me because I just took my old G3 and put it in the TV room to use as a remote. The only issue I see with the non-removable battery is getting a few years down the road when its capacity is less.
I don't use YouTube much at all. I did just now pop it open and fired up a video, and can confirm it did not stretch to full screen. I thought I read somewhere that Google was going to work on this on the software end as they're expecting more 16:9 phones to come along. I have no idea what the S8 does.
I haven't tested out the camera much. Honestly, I was amazed at the high quality of the G3 camera and would be happy if the G6 was as good. I take videos of our kid's wrestling matches and share some of the videos with other parents when they can't be there to watch their kids. I have gotten a lot of remarks about how fantastic my phone's videos are (the G3, that is) from people that have iPhone 6's and 7's. Still photos were awesome from the G3, and I should drag my butt out and try out the G6's new wide view.
I can't think of any other downsides. I do like the form factor of the G6 a lot more than the G3. I didn't mind the G3 that much, but the G6 is a lot narrower. It feels much more comfortable in the hand than the G3. It's taller, but that doesn't seem to be much of an issue for me. Fingerprint scanner on the G6 is great. Unlocks the phone instantly. It was a big adjustment to get used to volume buttons on the back of the G3, and now it's a big adjustment to get used to the "normal" side buttons of the G6. The G6 doesn't seem crazy faster than the G3 and the screen resolution is the same. The G6 does look a little sharper and clearer. My Sprint G6 is supposed to have this awesome new HPUE that increases speeds inside buildings, but I haven't noticed much of a difference in LTE speeds. Maybe that will come.
My G3 was stuck on Marshmallow, and the G6 comes with Nougat and Google Assistant out of the box. I haven't gotten into any good conversations with Assistant yet.

What's next to buy after a Note 4??

I am a very happy Note 4 user got 3 of them. N910v N910t & N910c. I have contributed to a thread stating all Note 4 pros and power. But if I want to change to a higher processor /camera or screen size; what should be my next model provided that it should have:
Removable battery - infrared - accept custom roms - external SD card.
And don't tempt me to buy another Note 4 because I already have that in mind
Unfortunately Removable battery is pretty much dead. Manufacturers wanna make it harder for people to maintain their phones in good shape. Otherwise new phones sales would be a disaster.
Infrared can still be found on some Huawei or Xiaomi devices but manufacturers found out people weren't using it that much so most decided it was better to save a few penny and get rid of it.
SD card is also not used as much, as phone makers would much rather like you to buy their pricier model for more storage.
Fortunately custom roms aren't going anywhere for the time being. You just need to get a popular enough device.
Best replacement for Note depends mostly on your budget, but don't try to a find something with the same versatility as you simply can't.
Some more horse-power and a better camera experience are the things you can notice an improvement in a new device.
For more discussions like this feel free to check my older thread with pretty much the same question: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/best-phone-to-upgrade-to-note-4-t3702300
If you really want a device with the same features as the Note 4. Then there really is no other option than to purchase another Note 4.

V30 is Glass Sandwich like S8+ but V20 is next best thing after note 4 if you can live with LG's bluish IPS also some have benign image retention on displays

If you can afford, buy note 9.
I went from Note 4 to Samsung S8+ and did not like it. It was a fast device for sure, but did not like:
1) 18.5:9 screen ratio
2) sealed battery
3) glass back
4) curved edges
after S8+, I went to LG V20.
LG V20 is the logical successor to the Note 4 and exceeds it in every way while still retaining the key features of Note 4:
1) user removable battery
2) 16:9 screen ratio
3) flat screen
The only disadvantage of LG V20 is the LCD screen, Note 4 does have a nicer screen but also a much worse battery runtime.

Why? what is with the LG V20's screen?
LG V20 uses an LCD screen, not LED like Samsung Note 4.
It means the colors are less vibrant. The red is less red, black is less black. It's a bit duller.
It's very nice but Note 4 has a better screen.
The other thing about LG v20 screen is retention. If you look at something yellow and then switch to a black screen, the yellow will be visible for a few minutes. Note 4 does not have that stupid screen retention issue. Now not all V20 have it, just some.
Theoretically, a Note 4 with dark tones will consume less power than an LCD screen which burns the same Amps no matter what colors you chose. In reality, LG V20 runs longer off the same sized battery due to a number of reasons, it's more efficient.
