Help updating my SM-N9005 Note 3? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I need a little help with updating my Note3. Ill start off with what I have here. I acquired a used Note 3 from a member of the Canadian Olympic Curling Team. It came from the last winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She was given it to her from Samsung. Its model number is SM-N9005. Currently I am running Android Version 4.3, and its Baseband# is N9005XXUDMJ7, and Build# is JSS15J.N9005XXUDMK2. I am using it in Manitoba, Canada on the MTS Mobilty Network, and its been working great!
It is rooted and I have the rom backed up to SD card using either CWM/TWRP, I can't remember which one. I'd like to update from Jellybean to the newest Android which I believe is Marsmallow, and would like to know how I can do this, and still keep my installed apps? I mean, Would I have to re-install all my installed apps? This would really suck, as i have a ton of apps. Also, all my texts and contacts. I know the contacts would be reinstalled from my google account, and I believe I can back up my texts, but would they still work after updating the OS? (I remember my apple days this was usually an issue!) I am using GoSMS Pro, and BBM for texting.
Can I simply "unroot" my phone and then update via the OTA option, then "re-root" it? Also, I have an awesome theme installed that changed all my icons to awesome looking full color icons, which i really like it is "The best theme ever 4 note 3" by SirM.
Can someone please tell me what it would take to update to the newest Android OS for me, so that I can keep my apps and all my settings intact, or even if that's possible?
I hope this isnt too much of a stupid request, but I don't have the time to wade through all the different forums/subforums for all the info im looking for, as there are so many diffenet types of Note 3's out there it seems! (Att/Verizon/Etc!)
Thanks for now, and I really appreciate any help.
Ginnz.
----Added later.
Ok, now here is probably a real stupid question, but I just seen an awesome Rom which i'd love to try, its a Note 5 port which promises to run real smooth on the Note3. Now, I am wondering if its as easy as just simply flashing it? or do I need to update to the newest Android version first, then flashing? And, would it work on my version of phone? This is the Rom I am referring to... And there is mention of "Aroma"? What is Aroma? Is it included with this Rom? or does it need to be installed first? Damn, I Know, Im so far behind with all this stuff. I Just been so busy with work, Family, work (Job #2) and all that jazz.... I hope these questions arn't too stupid! I just need a push in the right direction (s)
([Rom][5.1.1][N5 Port][19.02.2016] [Multi-DPI] Phronesis Rom v6 Feature Rich)
Thanks again in advance!
GiNNz!

Aroma is just an installer with multiple user options .
That is an excellent rom by the way .

Flash official 5.0.
Or flash the modem/baseband as in the thread. Then flash twrp 2.8.7.0. Followed by the rom you mentioned.

I install a fresh firmware 5.0, I root it with Kingo Root, flash it with twrp 2.8.7.0
I try to install Phronesis v6 and not working. is coming in loop.
In past with Phronesis v3 it works fine.
Where is my mistake?

Are you wiping the system, data, and cache before installing the rom?

Hi Strephon,
Thanks for your speedy response. How do I know which region is my phone and Does the region matter for which ROM I grab?
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-I337M
Also, can I juse CWM to install or will I need to use Odin?
Thanks again!
To help answer your question, please post the following information:
1. Model Number
2. Android Version, found by going to Settings > More > About device.
3. Firmware Version (AP, CP, CSC), found by dialing *#1234# in the dialer or by installing Phone Info from the Play Store and running it.
4. Service Provider
5. Country
6. Is the phone rooted? (Yes/No)
7. Is a custom ROM installed? (Yes/No, and the name of the ROM)
Hi Strephan,
1. Model Number: SGH-I337M
2. Android Version: Kitkat v4.2.2
3. Firmware Version AP: I337MVLUGOC4, CP: I337MVLUGOC4, CSC: I337MOYAGOC4
4. Service Provider: 7-Eleven Speak Out
5. Country: Canada

I ended up flashing using odin with the following file and everything seems to work fine except for some reason there is a HUGE amount of space that's has been taken up on the internal SD card and I can't seem to figure out what or where it is.
Here's the link to the ROM and instructions I used:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/45777/I337MVLUGOC4_I337MOYAGOC4_RWC/
Please let me know if there's anything I missed, Sorry for not waiting, I got impatient!
Thanks again for your help
How much is "huge"? You should have about 9GB remaining after the stock ROM is installed.
Oh, and the ROM you installed was fine.

Hey Strephon,
I was left with just under 400 mb after the install. I suspected that it was my CWM backup image taking up the room but after deleting it-it STILL still showed my phone was left with just under 400mb BUT after I rebooted - BAM, total available space now 4.45GB. yay!
I'm tempted now to try out the imperial ROM for lolipop but I'm guessing I'd lose OTA updates right? In fact, I'm guessing I'll lose OTA updates if phone is rooted? Do you know of any custom ROMS that are identical to lolipop but SLIMMED down ie: doesn't have any of the samsung, rogers, bell, crap?
Thanks again for your help Strephon!
Yes, using a custom ROM will cost you OTA updates. But, given the fact you can install a ROM using Odin without losing data, losing OTA updates is simply not a big deal.
None of the Touchwiz custom ROMs have the Rogers, Bell, or Telus bloatware. The Samsung bloatware though is a given on those ROMs. The good news however is that there are guides on the forums here that can be used to customize those ROMs, by deleting the bloatware from the flashable zip before you install it.
The ROMs that aren't based off Touchwiz, in addition to removing the carrier bloatware, also remove all the Samsung bloatware and its customizations, leaving you with something closer to what Google offers on its Nexus 6.
In general, the ROMs in the Android Development subforums are based off Touchwiz, while the ROMs in the Original Android Development subforums don't use Touchwiz at all. However, at least in the Android Development subforum, there can be exceptions.
Hey Strephon,
Just wanted to write about my experience so far.. After flashing to Lolliop 5.01 the email app was slow as molasses retrieving mail, so after some research I discovered doing a cache wipe was supposedly going to fix it..... NOPE! screwed up my phone so then I had to do factory reset. After which FINALLY, it was fixed. THEN, I wanted to get rid of all the bloat ware the stock Lollipop ROM came with. I decided to tackle this with the nifty program called Debloater. After some trial and error removing vital things that resulted in me having to factory reset 3 times and ultimately ending with a full re-install of Lollipop ROM via Odin I FINALLY have my phone setup perfectly the way I want. It was aaaall worth the time and effort, I'm really happy with the results - it's like a brand new phone!
Anyway, just wanted to share this with everyone. Thanks again Strephon and XDA - keep up the awesome work! :good:

New to I337 somewhat confused

New to the I337. AT&T with NC1. Android 4.4.2. Stock ROM with the 3.4.0-1125940 kernel. Rooted, SE Linux permissive, Safestrap installed. Compared to other phones I have owned, rooted and installed custom ROMS for this one is way more complex.
Today I tried to Safestrap flash a couple of different ROM's- the Goole Play edition (jflte GPE) and the Lollipop 5.1 ROM 2015061jflte both times using Safestrap. Neither worked. In the case of the Google Play edition, it wanted to install a new kernel as well, I tried with the recommended kernel on the install GUI (wow an install GUI on Android). Both times stuck in a boot loop. I ended up using for the second time, the excellent information here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/guide-odin-to-stock-updating-rooting-t2926642
to get back to stock NC1 (thanks again guut13 for the excellent guide and links to resources) and restored via Safestrap the present stock configuration.
My questions are as follows (I am posting this after a LOT of reading here)
1)Can I use LokiDoki ? I understand it resolves problems with the locked boot loader where one can flash pretty much any S4 ROM on the I337.Is this true?
2) I wanted to give the two ROMS I mentioned today a try. Neither worked although I followed the instructions carefully (wipe, install and reboot). I also would like to try the Phoenix ROM. Is it compatible with Safestrap? Are the two I tried today compatible with Safestrap?
3) I am on 4.4.2. I understand that 4.4.4 is out there as well as 5 but when I check either via Kies or OTA I am told this is the latest firmware for my phone. Any way to update this?
As I said earlier this phone is a lot more complex from a modding standpoint than any other I have experience with. I am unclear on which ROM's will work with the NC1. Before I knew about Safestrap and the boot loader problem I tried installing TWERP and ended up having to rebuild things with guut13's excellent thread.
With NC1 am I stuck on the stock ROM ? Can kernels be updated on NC1 using LokiDoki?
Any light or advice to be shed on my confusion wold be very much appreciated.

Loki doki is not an option for you, and you can only install tw based roms.

Thanks for the link. Have seen this thread. So I am on 4.4.2. So can I flash a 5.x ROM on the phone provided its TW --or does the phone have to be updated via OTH or another method to 5.x first? Or am I stuck on the ROMS specifically available on 4.4.2?
Thanks again very much for your interest and the link. Wish I had shopped more carefully and bought a non AT&T phone, one of the 5xxx models but I couldn't find anything other than the AT&T ones here in Ecuador.

That will get you to 5.0.1. You can flash the lollipop roms after that.
I wish I had known more before I bought my phone too. Live and learn, I'm about do for an upgrade though. Good luck.

Again many kind thanks for the help. This is the most complicated chain of BS to go through just to update a ROM thanks to the locked boot loader I have ever seen..... however you and others here deserve a lot of credit for finding workarounds...... the phone has been made needlessly complex with the BL and efforts by Google and AT&T to "protect" their turf and monetise the user. I would upgrade today were I not in Ecuador where everything costs double what it does in the US. The phone thief crop here is thick- this is the fourth phone in 2 years although the Galaxy Grand Prime I bought after the last robbery I still have. Broke the screen on that one and it was repaired improperly, I get a blank white screen on startup so can't get into recovery so its worthless to me for what I want it for..... so I have the S4 AT&T. Ah well.
Many thanks and enough of my *****ing.

Help Choosing custom ROM

Hi Guys,
semi-noob here. I have a galaxy s4 (sprint) model sph-l720 that I have activated on Boost Mobile carrier. I got it used and it works fine. I was very unhappy with battery life. I saw a way to convert s4 to s5 by flashing customer rom and thereby getting the ultra power saving mode. I followed the guide but since I'm new I can't post the URL the ROM is echoe rom v29 s5 port part v
kernal 3.4.101-v5.1
I could not root it using there method and even though twrp installed it would not initialize. I found an autoroot file that I installed with ODIN and it worked, phone was rooted. then I installed ROM manager from the play store and installed CM Recovery. that worked. then I installed the echoe ROM from that page. it all worked but now some things are not working. getting xposed not activated messages, mobile data shows a connection but I can't access the network. some other things now wokring either. it also changed my model number to GT-I9505, which I thought was weird...should I be concerned about that? . also it's android 4.4.2 and it might be better to have 5? . So, after all that, my question is to recommend a ROM that is newer but still have the power saving mode, that hopefully fixes the things that are not working. my main concern is battery life and performance. I don't care about things like themes. I hope that makes sense and I appreciate any help. Thanks
Yeah you got a long way to go.
You cannot and should not flash roms from other devices to your device. Unless it's stated that it will also work on your device. You also should not follow guides on those wannabe tech blogs unless it on XDA. If the guide is a Youtube video, then skip it. All those guides suck and are usually incomplete or outdated. For example you flashed a v29 version. When I look on the website of echoerom their latest version is v58.... And besides that there isn't even an sph-l720 version available.
Bottomline:
You flashed an outdated recovery, you flashed an highly outdated rom that's for the I9505 and not for your phone. No worries, you didn't brake anything.
This is the section for your phone.

1. Use TWRP instead of CWM. CWM is outdated and should not be used for our phone anymore.

HELP REQUIRED to choose a ROM for Galaxy S4 i9505 android 4.3 version~~

Hi guys, Newbie to forum and rooting here! I own a Galaxy S4 i9505 android version 4.3 and want it to upgrade to a higher, better and stable version. I've been doing a lot of research and found that the latest 6.0.1 gives issues with wifi on s4! I always wanted to root my phone but never did but since pokemon go doesn't run on 4.3 I'm glad that I'm forced to root it ! So, which is the best ROM and android version that I should upgrade my phone to that'll not show any bugs or issues! I don't care if the android version's not latest..I own only one phone! Just want to run pokemon go and exploit some features that rooting will provide! Thanks for help~
There aren't any ROMs that are 100% bug free. Even Samsung ROMs have bugs.
Also, the matter of "which ROM is better" is subjective.

Hey thanks for the reply! I'm aware that no ROM maybe 100% bug free but maybe there are some which have insignificant bugs?? and also perhaps the older ROMs..say the ones with android 5.0.x maybe so because of more updates? In that regard, I would really like if you would recommend one such ROM to your knowledge! Thanks!

Me, ive come from many years of custom ROMs on my S2, and due to all the issues with CM13 which was the last ROM i ran on it, i retired the S2 the other day and got a cheap second hand S4, and i have to say after all the drama of custom CM13 on the S2, i am actually enjoying the stock 5.01 LP ROM on the S4. All ive done is run CF Auto Root and then run this debloat app on it Until i do enough research on what a good custom ROM to install, im just going to stick with the stock 5.0.1...
Stock 5.01 is available here at sammobile
It should be enough of an upgrade over 4.3, plus you should probably flash this at least once before going to a custom ROM anyways...for reasons i wont bore you with
You can try this first up as an alternate to sammobile.com (because they limit your speed):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647
This backdoors a fast download from Sammobile...much faster
I just got it to finally work to download my ROM!
Or if you try the main sammobile.com website
If you choose to go this route, pick your country, and if you want an unbranded, no carrier bloat version, pick the one form your country with no carrier name after it in brackets, i.e. pick the one with just the 3 letter region code in brackets after it. Note: its about 1.4Gb to download, and unlike the old days sammobile will make it fricking painful to get without paying them...they throttle the download. Im on my 8th go trying to get my ROM, every time it fails you have to restart, so they soak up your data allowance the bastards, but theres nowhere else i know of to get my ROM
Or another alternate:
http://fw.updato.com/
Ok so I've decided to flash this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...om-untouched-google-play-edition-5-1-t3198177
But I'm getting confused between the meanings of rooting and flashing ROM. Do I need to "root" my phone (I would use Super SU) before flashing it? Because I'm following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDlV3plfnVA
and his recovery screen looks different than mine. Apparently, he's using clockworkMod CWM but how do I do that? So, if I root my phone first then will my recover screen look similar to his? It's confusing! Please help!
Like i said id flash a stock ROM first before going custom....GPE still counts as a custom ROM
Be sure to read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67514801&postcount=1380 and more than just the front page of any ROM, this one has a few issues, i assume fixed.....
As for recovery, you should forget about Phliz (it can have issues with newer ROM's) and use TWRP instead (i used to hate TWRP, but CWM based recoveries seemingly arent being updated to fix issues lately)
I did a quick post about installing it (and fixing a potential niggle) here earlier: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67769031&postcount=6

DarkWolf or DarkLord -- Would either work on Galaxy Note 3 (verizon firmware)

Hi. I was wondering if anyone could help me better understand this.
I would like to have either DarkWolf or DarkLord on my Verizon Note 3. For a few months or so I've been running JasmineRom so I understand how to do it for the most part, but I seem to keep messing up.
When I tried to flash DarkWolf through TWRP, it didn't work. I had to end up doing everything all over again. Using Odin to flash the firmware, rooting it with the root tool, etc.
A few questions I have are: How do Kernels work and how do I go about using them? I know Dark Lord, from where I downloaded it, came with a Kernel. Except when I tried to flash to Dark Lord from JasmineRom last night... it ruined the device and I ended up having to reflash the firmware with Odin, etc..
I settled back on JasmineRom last night just so I had a rooted phone while I went to work, but I'd still really like to have either DarkWolf or DarkLord (not sure which is better, but at this point maybe I should say which one will work.)
Currently I'm flashing the verizon firmware OF1 on my phone and then I will root the device so I'll be ready to go.
Also, can someone direct me to a thread or youtube link that explains how to get twrp back on a device? I was pretty sure I got it through flashify, but when I tried that earlier it kept coming up with errors. I'd really like to get twrp back as when I used it to flash DarkWolf last night, when it messed my up phone, everything was wiped clean.
Also -- when dealing with my phone either during or after rom changes and so forth, is my phone still considered a verizon phone even though I have a tmobile sim card? I'd just like to know if there is a difference or not. I'm thinking no because the firmware is still VErizon, but I'd still like to know from someone here.
Hopefully someone can help. Thanks.
None of them work on N900v. but @Sczar made AryaMod to work with his latest version. and honestly its Amazing. you should give it a try.
