Nexus 6P frustration, really close to going back to iPhone 6 - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I transitioned from an iPhone 6Plus to the Nexus 6P in December to go along with the new Huawei watch I got. However, I'm recently having more issues with alarms not going off on time(go off only when I unlock the device), text messages not sending, and my yahoo email not updating on the Gmail app. I understand that the text and email issues may be a server side problem but I never had those issues on the iPhone. I did install Greenify and the EX Kernal Manager to use ElementalX. I wonder if that's what is causing the alarms to not go off. Any suggestions?

The best recommendation is to go back to complete stock and see if your problems go away. Complete stock is how the Nexus was designed to work. Modifications are cool but can also cause strange behavior sometimes

Really funny to see people messing around with their phone and then coming back here complaining. And with a threat. Scary. Lol

Probably those "ultra power save über mode" things causing trouble. Greenify is no longer needed as we have Doze, it just messes stuff up.

"I messed with my phone so much that it's no longer working properly... Going back to an iphone 6"
Perhaps a good idea.

If you don't want to play detective, learn to become a developer or too frustrated, then go back to stock.
Not sure what you have done using greenify or EX, but it sounds like it could be your problem.

Probably why apple doesn't let you mess with the iPhone.

Hey, the Huawei Nexus6 P and Huawei watch are great combinations!
Go back to stock or flash something like chroma, sinless, pure, etc. Then you'll stick around XDA!

Your alarm issue is simple. Plug it in at night. Googles new Doze puts even the alarm to sleep. This is fixed in newer versions of android so you might see it with the 7.0 update.

I already plug it in every night. Any way to disable the Kernal Manager without just uninstalling it?

To be honest I am not sure. I don't use it. Also might want to check greenify as it has been known to cause issues and developers advise against using it at all

Whatsapp notification woes driving me crazy!

So after being a long time apple user and long time iTunes hater ... I managed to sell my iphone 4 and bought a samsung galaxy S4, did the same for my other half...
Keep in mind, this is a brand new, no-root, default phone.
The issue basically is notifications, for whatsapp ( at the moment since I haven't set up anything else that requires push, besides gmail). The issue is once I turned the screen off, either manually or by itself. whatsapp notifications randomly stop arriving until I turned on the screen, completely close the app and open it again, the same goes for 2 other devices ( 3 in total), this happens with wifi or mobile data
Device #1. new s4,
Device #2 new s4
Device #3 Samsung galaxy young running 4.1.2 JB.
Now, device #3 belongs to a friend of mine who told of these issues a couple of months ago, however I did pay attention as I just figured it was network connection or wifi or whatever be it.
I've googled the hell out of this and it is apparently an android issue:
it's not telco related in my case, because i had NO ISSUES on my iphone 4 nor my best half's 4s.
Anyway, hopefully someone here has been through something similar and been able to fix it? I've searched the forums and there's apparently a widespread issue, but not fix as of 4.2.2?
New to the forum, I originally posted this here

Hi,
I just recently switched to a samsung galaxy s4 ( two actually, one for me,
one for GF), before that we used iphone 4 and 4s, never had an issue with
whatsapp notifications until I switched this passed friday. The issue is
once the phone goes into sleep mode, be it mobile data or wifi, I have to
force close the app and open again to receive notifications that I got
hours ago if I don't continously check.
I've googled the hell out of it and found your FAQ, as well as plenty other
sites with the same issue except no solution.
From your FAQ:
1. tried re-installing directly from direct download link (
http://www.whatsapp.com/android/current/WhatsApp.apk) and not from play
store
2. tried rebooting.
3. notifications are set properly
4. google+ is disabled ( hangouts) ( tried enabling it, same result)
5. Wifi is set to always on.
Note this is on stock, brand new phones and apparently it's a wide spread
issue:

Sadly, both
Do you lock the screen while whatsapp is open? Or do you choose whatsapp and then lock the screen?
If whatsapp is still running and on the screen, and you lock the screen, it's like the app just stops checking.. I've had this with multiple phones and its a whatsapp problem, not the phone.

No, the opposite. For me, whatsapp only worked and checked for msgs if i closed the app and then locked the screen. I would usually come back to the homescreen or something. But if i locked over whatsapp, it would stop checking or take a really long time.
But since you say you've done both, I'm kinda stumped.

Currently trying to installing .763, updated from .762, but whatsapp servers are probably getting busted as can't even verify my number.
Bro install Whatsapp+.
Google and download the apk, install and see if it helps.
If not, the only way is to root the S4 and install push notification fixer from play store. It modifies andriod to check for msges every 5mins. That will solve your problem for sure.

Hey mate,
I've probably tried all apps or methods by insanity to try getting this problem fixed. Unfortunately, nothing positive turned out.
Now I'm trying to off my screen when whatsapp is open, however, I still think it's unbelievably stupid to do so even if it works to get push notification. How can I go back to whatsapp whenever i wanna put the phone back in my jeans pocket? It then seems whatsapp would become the new homescreen?!?!?
Anyone got a real solution to this???
Also having this problem. Screen off, screen on - sometimes whatsapp just doesn't want to receive/send messages. Other times it's working properly.
Have you guys disabled Samsung Push? Have you disabled any system apps at all? Also, do you have the problem even when your phone has a good signal?
I'm also trying to find out the reason for this problem.

I do disable some system app like weather, finance and stuff like those. To me, what I can confirm is the independence of problem from the signal strength since I've been using the same service provider before upgrading to Jelly Bean and there used to be problem free with the push notification.
This is the result I got last night:
- open whatsapp -> close whatsapp -> homescreen -> screen off = no push
- open whatsapp -> close whatsapp -> free ram -> screen off = no push
- open whatsapp -> screen off = push
Conclusion:
- it is not related to free ram
- it is the problem that the andriod system turn off the app upon screen off (or sleep)
Plus.
I tried installing Push Notification Fixer to introduce "heartbeat" to maintain the connectivity, unfortunately, it DOES NOT work in my case.
Let's keep in view the development. At least we are not alone and hope either Whatsapp or Google can fix this.
Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417
It's a thread which guides you how to disable some allegedly useless google services in order to save battery life when idle. It works, but I think it might have been what's caused my whatsapp to go crazy. I even asked in the thread and some others have the same problem.
But if most other people in this thread haven't disabled said google services, that doesn't make any sense.
Mate. Trust me i know this issue exist on all andriod. i googled the hell out of it because i quarrelled with my partner a few times due to delay in replies. its just the way the kernel is written for stock andriod. you can try everything but it wont work. your only solution is to root and install push notification fixer from play store.

This isn't an issue with android it's an issue with whatsapp. Every android phone I've ever owned has had this issue with whatsapp. Whatsapp need to update their app so it still notifies if it was the last app open whilst the screen locks.
I just press home after I reply and let it lock its second nature to me. The bug is in whatsapp where if it is the last displayed whilst screen lock notifications don't work. You could try changing the conversation tone that might help.

That's wrong... It was perfectly fine, instantly receiving whatsapp messages in my phone no matter what. Something I've changed caused it to stop working.
My problem isn't only the notifications, it's the actual whatsapp messages aswell. Something killed the Whatsapp wakelocks, now my whatsapp isn't causing any wakelocks and when the phone is idle it does not check for messages.

Facebook Messenger Waking Screen on notification

I can't pin it down to this being an Android 4.3 issue or an update to the app itself so i'm asking for other peoples experience here. When you receive a facebook message and the screen is off, does it wake the screen?
I should also mention it happens too on my Nexus 7 (2013)

Yeah, I also noticed it started yesterday or the day before. Android 4.3 stock firmware. Pretty sure it's apps fault, tried different ROMs and got exact the same result. Someone should report this to developers.
I have a HTC One S, same thing occurring here... it appears to be the Messenger App's fault. Since I have had the same issue across 3 different roms
Yeah, I got the same issue with parandroid and the stock 4.3.
The screen wake up when I get a message on the desktop computer. I've shot down all the notifications on the phone and the problem's gone now.
**** .
So I'm definitely not alone then! I've just reverted back to the previous version and that's fixed it for the time being. Also sent the devs a message from within the app but seeing as this nod Facebook, who knows when it will get fixed

Good to hear, it's really annoying, I hope they fix it soon. Any tip how to revert back to old version? Or maybe you have the right apk to share with me please? I don't even know which version was the working one
Facebook is always a fail app.
The new update fixed it momentarily, but it's doing it again. I'm on 4.2.2 on an S4 and it's doing it too. Kills the battery, I hate it. Turning notifications off completely only disables it as it automatically turns on after a few hours.
Anyone have the APK for the version before this crap started happening?

Well, thanks for the effort, but it still didn't fix my problem. Also tried different versions, but neither of them did work. Gotta wait for official update.
Okay, so I've found a fix. After trying absolutely everything I tried greenifying the app. Obviously when it's greenified the screen doesn't wake, because you aren't receiving any notifications at all. Strangely enough though, when you de-greenify the app, then run it again. No more screen wakes!
Have no idea why it works, but it does! So I'm happy!
I take back what I've said... It works temporarily, then starts waking the screen again

I'm also having the same problem, with my HTC One and my Nexus 7 2013.
I can reproduce the problem on the followings devices:
* HTC One running Sense 5
* HTC One running Google Edition RUU (4.3)
* Nexus 7 2013 (4.3 JSS15Q)
I dunno if the problem is really app related or not... What i find out is that trying to login with my friend account, the screen doesn't wake up when receiving a message. I tried further and created a dummy facebook account, and same, doesn't wake up the screen.
Just my facebook account is waking up my screen.
I didn't try long enough with my friend account and my dummy account if the problem will appear sooner or later.
Could be account related or app related, or both...

Okay, So I tried a fake account as well. Bam. No screen wake upon receiving notifications. So i'm going to assume it's account related... Only Facebook could pull this off...unbelievable..
unbelievable but true! it is account related. The question now is:
What do we have in common? (Developer?)
and are there any settings in Facebook which could stop this behavior.

HELP - Notifications not coming through when screen is off

Hi everyone,
I've been having a very strange problem for a couple of days now. Whenever my phone's screen is off and the phone has been idle for some time, I don't receive notifications anymore. Facebook notifications don't work at all, no matter whether the phone is active or not, but I also don't get FB Messenger and WhatsApp notifications. Sometimes they come through as soon as I turn on the screen, and sometimes I only see them when I open the respective app. I didn't mess with app permissions, and I also have set each app to "important" in the notification settings. It also doesn't seem to matter whether I'm on WiFi or on mobile data.
Gmail, SMS and calls don't seem to be a problem, although I sometimes have a feeling that emails come through to my phone with a considerable delay, as compared to my Gmail inbox on my computer.
The strange thing is, when I had the phone all new, everything worked as it should and I received ALL notifications from EVERY app IMMEDIATELY when they came in. This issue with notifications no longer coming through started occurring a couple days ago after I had first flashed the Boeffla Kernel (though I'm not sure if it has anything to do with that.) So I went back to the stock kernel, but the problem was still there. Then I re-flashed my original Nandroid backup from when I had first flashed TWRP, in order to set the system back to "stock", wiped data and cache, re-installed every app (the critical ones, i.e. Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp, via Play Store, and the non-critical ones via Titanium Backup), and the problem is still there. I've done this three times now, to no avail.
My phone is rooted and I have Xposed installed, I'm using SuperSU and a number of root apps such as 3c Toolbox, Le DPI Changer and Font Installer. 3c Toolbox is set to clear caches on every reboot. As for Xposed, I use only VibrateMode to change the notification slider from all/important/none to all/vibrate/none, and GravityBox to center the clock in the status bar and to set the volume buttons to skip tracks on long press. I also have Glimpse Notifications installed so that the screen lights up when a notification comes in.
The funny thing is, notifications not coming through is one of the reasons I switched to the OPT from the Huawei Mate 7, where this issue was due to power management settings by Huawei. Since I'm now back on the stock kernel and have also no power saving apps such as Greenify or Amplify enabled, I am really out of ideas as to why this happens. The next step is to flash a fully stock OOS 2.1.2 (my Nandroid backup is already rooted and with my Google account set up), wipe data and cache, and re-install every app again.
Does anyone here have any idea what the problem (and the solution to it) might be?
UPDATE: After I wrote the last sentence, I received two messages simultaneously, one from Messenger and one from WhatsApp. I was at home and on WiFi, and both coming in at the same time must mean that the phone receives push notifications in fixed intervals, since the sender of both messages was the same person and sent them consecutively, i.e. with at least a minute in-between. Now I am especially confused since a) they came through at all, even though the screen was off and the phone had been idle for at least 15 minutes, and b) they came through at the same time, which was definitely not the time when they had been sent.
The confusion is complete now ... any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
The problem persists. Today for half a day I received all notifications, after that once again only when I turned on the screen or opened the respective app. WiFi all the time, no settings changed in between.
This really annoys me to no end. I don't own an expensive smartphone so it doesn't work as it should. I never had any troubles like this with my old Sony Xperia V. Then again it ate through a full battery in half a day ...

Yes. As I said, I reflashed my original (rooted but otherwise unaltered) Nandroid backup and then reinstalled all apps, and am not using anything that could interfere with apps receiving notifications.
The order in which notifications come through automatically vs. only when I activate the display or open the respective app also doesn't seem to follow any regularity ... sometimes it works as it should, sometimes it doesn't.
As for Facebook notifications, I somehow have a feeling this is a specific FB-related problem. But as for Messenger, WhatsApp and now also Instagram as I've noticed, it's all the same issue as described in my original post. The only exception really seems to be Gmail, which always notifies me of new emails.
EDIT: All these apps have unaltered permissions, i.e. are allowed to keep the phone awake, and all apps are set to "important" for notifications, so this doesn't seem to be the issue either.
EDIT 2: I also installed push notification fixer to see what interval is set for the GCM services, and it's set to 5 minutes on WiFi and 6 minutes on mobile data. So that also can't be the issue.
Could the screen not lighting up when a notification comes in have something to do with deep sleep, possibly? But then why does it work for Gmail???

I could suggest you one more thing. Its a shot in the dark .
Could you check "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" in you advanced Wi-Fi settings ?
If the above is not a problem then out of ideas buddy. As a last option you could clean flash by wiping everything and just install whatsapp and other apps in which you are facing a notification delay. If it works then there could be some other application interfering , it it doesn't then i am not sure what it could be.

As a last option you could clean flash by wiping everything and just install whatsapp and other apps in which you are facing a notification delay. If it works then there could be some other application interfering , it it doesn't then i am not sure what it could be.

Yeah, that's pretty much my last resort. Currently, I'm trying to see if it makes a difference whether I keep FB Messenger and WhatsApp "open" in the recent apps menu.
try setting the refresh intervals in push notifications fixer to 1 minute

I could try that, you're right - I didn't yet because I didn't want to sacrifice battery life too much ... but I could give it a shot for at least one charging cycle and see what the effect is. Thanks!

i do remember reading some time ago that these intervals do not impact the battery life, but you could test for yourself just to be sure
So, currently most notifications are working again for me, for whatever reason. Facebook being the big exception, of course. Might have to do with keeping the apps opened in the multitasking overview. If that's what it takes, then fine ...
I've got a OPT for few day, i have same issue......anyone experience this problem? any solution? is it 2.1.2 problem?

Which app? Only Facebook, or other apps as well? For me it's working now, but I can't say why exactly. I use a number of tweaks on my phone (root, Xposed framework etc.) so I can't definitely say which of my apps cause issues and which fix them again.
As for Gmail, it appears that when there's already a notification for an email and a little later another one comes in, it won't play a sound or vibrate. That seems to be standard behaviour but I find it VERY annoying, even though I set Gmail to notify me on EACH incoming email.
despite suggesting a fix i seem to be experiencing the same problem as well. it happens on both wifi and mobile data so you cant blame any settings. my best guess would be its because of the latest update. gonna have to backup my data and revert back to the older firmware to solve this issue.
@vonotny have you found a solution? im experiencing the same problem after updating to 2.2.0

Not really, no. Mine are currently working again, after I re-flashed the stock system and set up everything again step-by-step. It's possible that some app or tweak or setting caused the issue, but I couldn't find out which one.

i suspected it could be because of restoring apps from titanium backup directly instead of downloading and installing them from the play store first, but even with that i still face the same problem. currently on oxyslim. come to think of it, could it be caused by the power tweaks? did you use them before when you faced the problem?
Same problem here on OOS3.0.1. Inbox and WhatsApp messages don't often come through until I turn on the screen. Completely stock. Didn't have the problem on CM13, I think. It's really annoying because I can miss a lot of important emails from work. Even put the apps I want in No Battery Optimization mode. No help really.
i have the same problem. I'm on OOS3.0.2 with Cyanoxy. Can anyone help?
Same problem here...
What the F?
This device is almost a year old and I still can't use it as PHONE. I am not asking for some fancy stuff, but fixing the gigantic bugs that are preventing me from even using this daily.
Fix for those willing to tweak the system: install the latest Boeffla kernel, it has an option to turn off doze.

Phone lags when receiving text messages

I guess the title is pretty self explanatory. I'm not rooted and running the latest updates from Tmo. This has been a issue since the first day I bought the phone but I guess now it's getting to me. I've tried the stock messaging app as well as Chomp, Textra and Handcent and it's the same thing. No matter what I'm doing, when I get a text message the phone freezes/lags. I can pretty much predict when I have one coming because of it. This is first phone I can remember having this issue. Old gf of mine used to have the S5 complained of the same thing and this is my first Samsung device in a long time. Wanted to know if it's my phone or just the way TW handles incoming messages.
Doesn't happen on mine.

Yeah I was kinda thinking the same thing. I was hanging on to a thread of hope but it is dashed now. LOL. Thanks for confirming. It didn't seem like something that millions of people would put up with.

Isn't there any option like show new message as Popup or extra action for new messages?
Please test Google Messenger App with default setting and also uninstall others and disable the stock messaging app.
let me know if still there is problem.

Yeah that didn't work either. It must be my phone. I don't know what could be wrong that it only happens when I get a text but oh well. On to the S8

Amazfit - no notifications from phone

Got an AmazFit A1602 watch, Chinese ROM. Set it up, updated it, played with PACEified for a few seconds (hadn't figured out how to OTA the stock ROM yet, so it hung-up when screen went off), went back to Chinese ROM, OTA'd it, reset it in English, and that's where I left it for about a week. Worked great, loved the watch. But, coming from a Gear Live (that wore out), I can't stand not getting my notifications on the watch...
So I dug further into it. Replaced the Chinese ROM with the English ROM - now it thinks it's an A1612 PACE. Kewl. Whatever. App works, everything works, repaired the recovery and OTA works (wellp, now I'm stuck on it, after finding the bootloader is now locked). But NOTIFICATIONS still don't work!
Tried it on a different device - my Nexus 7 tablet. Still no notifications.
Tried reinstalling, tried different app versions, tried everything I can find and think of. No. Notifications.
Do they even work for anyone else?
Another thread on the saga: https://www.reddit.com/r/amazfit/comments/61w4ga/most_notifications_not_coming_through_facebook
I might just offer "ad-free" for anyone that can actually help, throw a bounty out there and see if someone can help me. I usually end up asking the hard questions nobody can answer :fingers-crossed:
Probably you've tried this already but it's worth to repeat procedure.
After you paired the watch with your phone, you have to enable notifications in the app, choose witch notifications you want to allow/block and let the amazfit app to access notifications. Last part is usually under Android settings, security. Sounds complicated but it's good to have full control.
Notifications worsk perfectly for me.

Yep, that's the first thing I try - but I appreciate the reply/bump! I think I might throw that bounty out there (if legal to do so) - I'd throw $15 at this problem to get it fixed. Hopefully that's how the donate option works
I enabled notification access to Amazfit app in the Android settings. Under the "notifications" options in the app, I get a miles-long list of apps on the phone, but they are all under the option to "disallow app notifications" -- no apps appear at the top of the page under "Allow app notifications". Presumably the top section is for apps that have sent notifications.
I also "disable battery optimization" and allow contact access for the watch as well.
My phone is a Huawei Honor 5x (kiwi) running CM13 (20161223 nightly) - but also tried on the Nexus 7 (2013) tablet running stock OS, unrooted.
Each app on that list have a switch on the right to enable notifications and move it to the "Allow app notifications".

Screenshots how should look like. Latest dev app does not have push notifications but has another tab. Of course, watch must be connected to the phone to be able to receive notifications. But that's obvious Btw, I didn't touch batter optimization.
Btw, Frys still has the watch on $30 off.
p.s.
Now I see that you're my neighbor

That was it!! Goddamn Chingrish... to me, it looked like that settings page was divided into two - apps that had sent notifications in the past, which I could turn off "allow notifications", and apps that hadn't sent notifications and I could "disallow" them from ever doing so. The Chingrish part is that they should be saying "Allowed" and "Disallowed" notifications... not "allow"/"disallow". It simply doesn't make sense to divide them solely by their switch setting... and since I had no intention of disallowing an app's notifications, I never tried switching ones from the bottom! Also doesn't make a lick of sense to disable them all by default - easily seems like it's malfunctioning. I just went through and switched everything up to "allowed" like it is in Android Wear by default.
Wellp, I got a SMS buzz on my wrist for the first time, and everything is awesome now.

Just sharing my experience. My notifications stopped working and I went through all the above to no avail. Finally I realised I must have accidentally turned on Silent Mode at some point. It may help to check on your watch that Silent Mode is OFF

Gmail doesn't push notifications to watch
Hi all,
I m experiencing this issue and I really cannot understand what is going wrong and why it does it...i recently purchased amazfit stratos English version and I was not very satisfied with the notifications capabilities..i could only see the first email and read it all way down but if a second mail arrived I could only see the gmail logo and a number( indicating the number of the mails that I have) ..but wasn't able to read each message...very frustrating...same for other apps...Viber and line messenger if I receive more than one message I can only read the last one....so I decide to go with the watchdroid app for the phone and assistant for the watch... everything is running smoothly now,I can even reply to messages (for some reason only sms messages not Viber or line) BUT I do NOT receive my mails from gmail...something that with the amazfit app I could...well I could not read them if they were more than one but the push service was working...with watchdroid gmail push notifications do not work....any help would be appreciated guys!
Thanks in advance,
Stratos
