Ad block on youtube? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone had success blocking Youtube ads on stock firmware?
So far I've tried the youtube Adaway xposed module (Link)
Adaway root app (Link)
With MOAB ad block list (link to list from this thread Thread Link)
Sideloading a modded youtube app (Link), doesn't have a TV layout, and no controller support.
Has anyone had any luck blocking youtube ads? I was really hoping the xposed module would work, I've asked on the XDA thread for the module about adding support for android TV youtube and haven't gotten a response.

So now running 3.0 stock (not even rooted). I'm still getting Ad's in youtube, but now they're un-skippable, I hope someone can figure this out soon!

the old adblock android block youtube adds half of the time, but it create tons of other bugs soooo not that good.
root is recomanded

adaway, and adblock Android (not the browser) does it but you need root.
adblock was not updated for a long time I guess...
I am using it on Zulu stock marshmallow rom.

Sucks. I was hoping to keep the device stock as pursuing roms often ends up with other issues and constantly manually updating, and after spending so much time putting roms on my phones I think im done with that.
If anyone has a stock solution, i'll donate, because **** getting 20 identical unskippable ads a day.

adblock browser then watch YouTube from the desktop site. you can set it as the default option in YouTube site itself.
you just need to side load the browser app.
or buy YouTube red.
or pay OG YouTube no add function.

If you are rooted and don't mind installing xposed, since a couple weeks ago youtube adaway module now works with the youtube Android tv app.
Enjoy.

Been watching YouTube app for about an hour now, not one ad.
Stock rom, rooted, using adaway (just the apk, not the browser, not using exposed)
Update....literally watched for hours (3+) yesterday and never saw a single ad.
Btw, I was using MoaAB until recently. I found it was really affecting loading/buffering times with certain addons in SMPC. Redid my entire setup again, this time using just adaway and issues are gone (as well as the ads)

[Q] Hulu Plus on "Flash Video Browser" app?

OK...I bought this app because I wanted a simple way to get Hulu Plus working. I am running CM7 via a dual-boot SD card since I wanted to preserve the original B&N functionality. Adobe Flash 11 is installed too.
I'm hoping this is something really simple. When I start up the app and go to Hulu, the Hulu web page loads with no issues. So, I click on "Log In" and two things happen:
1. For a brief second, a login dialog pops up int he upper right (same as regular Hulu) asking me to enter a user name and password. It's only on the screen for about half a second.
2. Immediately afterwards, the web browser just goes to an "about:blank" page.
So, how I can I get past this and log into my Hulu Plus account to watch videos?
Unless I'm missing something the easy way to watch Hulu Plus is to download the Hulu Plus app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449110
I'd recommend going that route unless there is some reason why it wouldn't work with a dual boot setup. Your purchase isn't a total loss though I wouldn't mind having it for YouTube videos that won't play on mobile browsers. Just make sure you disable ad blocker if you have it installed before using the flash browser app.

I don't have it in front of me right now actually but the app definitely doesn't work. I think it gives some sort of "Your device is not supported" error but I'll check when I get home. So I'm looking for alternatives.
Well if you download the app from Google Play (Android Market) then you will probably have that problem. But the link I posted is from another thread here and its a modded APK that works very well. Again it should work unless there's an issue with dual boot setups I'm not aware of. Lol I've missed things before and some people make sure you know it.
Don't forget disabling ad blocker is the easiest and most common fix for your app in question. I would still recommend the Hulu app but you might as well get this browser app working too.
figured it out...
if you go to hulu.com/signin it will redirect to a login page... login..... this will save the cookie..... use back to exit fvb then when you open again just hit hulu ..... I found this post looking for a solution.... then did some experimenting and this just worked for me like 5 minutes ago.... hope this helps

thanks.. :fingers-crossed:
i hope it is not a virus infected site..
update:
it loaded/installed just fine.. and ran..
first try.. it got to hulu.com.. and showed full website.
tried to play a show.. it locked up.. had to FC it.
ran the app again.. going to hulu.com .. was a white screen. and that is all you can see.
so.. that app has been blocked or does not support hulu anymore.
NOTE: i did not try to load an older version of Flash Player. this might fix it.
but I am giving up on this.. till something is developed better.

Hulu Plus works beautifully on my Nook Color. Running CM10 from the SD Card.
It's not entirely clear whether or not you're using the modded app linked in the 2nd post. You need to use the modded app. Here's a link:
http://www.mediafire.com/?n0e9qxeo1mt0onh
Before running the app, be sure to temporarily disable any ad-blocking you may be using.

Don't know if my different nook or rooted stock rom makes a difference. I have a rooted Nook Tablet (NT), no custom ROM. I cannot login from the directions in the earlier posts. However, I can watch certain things by browsing for them without signing on.
Here's what happens... I use the Flash Video Browser (bought in store... can't remember if it was through amazon, google play, etc.). I search for a show. If they have free versions of that show click on it (I think logging in might allow a higher quality but it looks great on my 7" screen as is). If ever you are confronted with a white screen, in address bar it says "about:blank", I hit the back button (I use the back button on Button Savior from Google Play store). When I hit the back button it plays the video.
If it shows the white screen after you search, similarly the back button will bring you back to the search results. Hope this helps.

Adblock for youtube?

Anyone know if theres any way to block the ads in youtube on the nexus player? I usually do that with xposed. I didn't realize how many freaking commercials there were. And half of them I can't skip after seconds any more. The same commercials over and over...

I use adblock by BigTinCan, but honestly don't remember if it handles YouTube ads...
Don't use addblock or Aaddway the mess things up. Hulu always stopped and could never load the adds. Therefore I could never finish a show. I thought it was the np or the app for the longest time until I uninsulated my add blocker
Yeah I tried with ad away and just took forever before ad timed out. I have ads blocked with xposed on tablet and phone. Wasn't sure if there was an alternative

Add hulu to your whitelist on adaway to resolve that.
There is a working solution now. You'll need to install the correct version of Xposed on your Nexus Player and then install YouTube AdAway v2.6.1 to block YouTube video ads on this device.

Install latest youtube on FireOS 4.5.3 and be able to login WITHOUT ROOT(!!!)

I am running FireOS 4.5.3 on Fire HDX 7" and it is not (and never has been) rooted.
Settings > Applications > Apps from unknown sources is On
I have the file manager with zip support installed.
Uninstall any versions of the 5 apks mentioned below.
Download this zip file:
https://mega.co.nz/#!OItCnSSA!VqBqlbwUa3h5VR0bmIXmRVBq4UeYo5bhBmzmflml3Vk
Open or extract it and install the apks in this order:
account manager 4.0.3
framework 4.0.4
play services 7.3.29
playstore 4.3.10
youtube 10.16.53
Reboot the tablet.
Go to youtube and you should get that normal google account login screen.
Login and presto! There you have it latest youtube apk with sign in ability.
Hasn't crashed on me (yet), but play store does not work (I've tried a few versions).
Yes I am aware of that youtube app with the blue icon in the amazon app store but I wasn't satisfied with it.
I haven't tried any other google apps yet with this combo.
I really hope this works for others. I just spent the last 5-6 hours figuring this out and it's now nearly 2am.
works for me
Youtube works.
Not for playstore gmail.
Oh that's cool I'm glad it's worked for others.
I just wanted to give something back to this forum cause I've gone to it so many times myself.
Found a gmail apk that works
Don't want to burst your bubble, but someone already figured out how to get YouTube to work on unrooted devices (along with other Google apps): http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/themes-apps/how-to-install-gapps-root-t2954372

Chrome should work regardless of framework (at least it did last time I tried). If not try Opera. Same underlying engine (Chromium) with a different skin.

That command is for Google+ to work. It's not needed if you don't use G+. But at least you provided newer versions.
Is it just me, or does doing this break other apps? Skype won't work properly (no contacts or message history), TuneIn radio won't even get past the initial screen. Why is this happening? Sorry I'm new to this stuff.
I should add that uninstalling these packages then causes everything to work again, so it does seem to be causing it.

Installing Google framework/services/store/etc on Fire OS is always a crap shoot as Amazon has its own set of conflicting services. Many get it to work (at least partially) while others experience problems. Installing framework/services on an unrooted device presents additional challenges....but also adds a layer of safety as you can typically install/experiment/uninstall without serious consequences. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your current situation; responding to "why is this happening?". You'll probably get it to work eventually with help from others.
That makes sense. I did manage to get Skype 5.1 working but anything after that breaks. Must have added a new feature since then that gets into that services conflict you mention. No luck with TuneIn, though I found an alternative for that.

If your family is looking for unfettered access to the play store you should definitely look for another device. It will be awhile before alternative roms become available to newer Kindles and most play store implementations are hacks at best. While the hardware is wonderful you really have to be wed to the Amazon ecosystem to truly appreciate the device (or be fortunate enough to have an 'older' model that can be rooted/unlocked and run a Google friendly rom).

I appreciate the frank reply. I was able to set her up with Chrome and Gmail which were her main concerns. The 1Mobile 3rd party marketplace had any of the other apps she was looking for. I also finished moving all her books over so she's going to take it for a spin this weekend when we head to the beach for a night and see how it goes.

If you are comfortable with 1moble (one of my favorite 'alternative' marketplaces) then many of the shortcomings inherent with the Amazon store can be mitigated. Chrome (more often Gmail) can get fussy without google services/framework. Opera is a nice alternative that utilizes the same core engine as Chrome. Gmail is a little tougher to directly emulate; plenty of alternatives if the Gmail app coughs up a fur ball (I happen to like Aquamail). You really don't need root but if you choose to do so Xposed framework adds a few nice touches that can further tame an HDX without compromising native functionality.
Hope it works out for you folks.
You can run Google services framework without root. People have been having issues with the newer builds however. If it does not work for you, try build version 7.0.99.

That will work for now (thanks @lekofraggle for the tip) but be aware Google is quickly adapting apps to leverage capabilities introduced in newer builds of services framework. For now that appears confined to Maps and Google Now (eg: card features) and primarly targets Lollipop.
You are welcome. I know about the impending issue with Google play services. Hopefully they fix the issues soon. Google maps works for now but complains.

For those of you that trust and support XDA development, there's actually an XDA thread for this app from the developer.

I didn't realize that at first but had an issue with #NoChroma browser; I used the in-app support to report. I was impressed with the response and follow-up. My settings actually work better with Chrome so Chrome with Adguard is a better alternative to #NoChroma's limited ad blocking browser. I'm using the Adguard root settings.
Having the quick disable service is handy but the one site that hit me with a persistent welcome screen that suggested I view their lite ad browsing experience was squashed by the user filter. I may be wrong but mobile browsers need more freedom from such persistent ads, pop-ups, full banners and admonishment to disable ad blockers.
The filters can be synced to update without user intervention. If you use the root settings, the persistent notification can be disabled. Both settings are deep in the menu. If you try to disable the notification with a long press in pull-down, the service will stop frequently. Do it right and service is reliable.
Only web browsing ad blocking is free but using with Xposed MinMinGuard module and YouTube Adaway, the rest is covered. So far the experience is actually better than Adaway with MinMinGuard.

Thanks for the info! Wasn't aware of all that. I simply stumbled upon it from a Google search after hearing someone mention it in a comment on sammobile but I do like it. It does block all of my app related adds but it's a free trial only so I do plan on purchasing it whenever that's up and also to support the developer of course. I'm completely stock so this is great because ads are the number one thing I miss with root.

Better than Adaway? I use Adaway with custom host sources (like most all of the adblockplus, fanboy subscriptions, unbelovedhosts, malwaredomains_full, and more) and minminguard and youtube adaway in xposed. I got a whole bunch of host sources in my Google Keep I just copy and paste every time I flash a new rom and reinstall Adaway. I've not used this one though...

Adaway was more work but does a better job at blocking ads in apps. I had an export file that took nearly 30 minutes to import from extSdCard and apply at one time but cut it down to 10 minutes (slow). But it still needed occasional add-ons and finding that I'm blocking a potential wanted service is sometimes annoying to find. I've still only had to add one user filter get around one site.
This one does the browser blocking with a lot less effort and gets updated frequently. Some of those other hosts sites can block too much but that would depend on your preference as well. If your labor is rewarding, enjoy what you have. If you find it high maintenance, try this as alternative.
It's not an alternative to YouTube Adaway and MinMinGuard. I prefer to use it with those services as I did with Adaway, before. It's best use is for blocking browser ads, that service is free.
The fact that it doesn't require root, means it could possibly become more popular in time.

What Do You Like / Dislike About The Firmware You Are Running? How do You Run your Shield?

Hello Friends~!
I feel like the community is getting closer to being able to make roms for our device and to prepare for that, I would like to know:
What is it that you Like and or Dislike about the Shield's Firmware you are running?
(If you can list the firmware you are running in your answer, that would be super helpful)
I am writing a script to cleanup the system image I want to clone (8.2.3 will be the first one I work on), but it would be helpful to know what others like and dislike about any firmware.
Plus we can generally agree that most like Plex therefore that app and the SMB server stuff should be left alone.
But what do you think? What should be left into a rom for the shield? What should be left out? Should anything be Added in to the rom? Like launchers or stuff like that. What do You personally use?
Any and all thoughts welcome and appreciated!
For me 8.2.3 is the best. Everything with permissions etc got crazy stupid after that. Rocked 9.1.1 for less than 24 hrs...was laggy and just plain sucked.
The thing i wish 8.2.3 or any firmware would allow a way to chromecast youtube to a shield ad free version....lots of times I'll be watching ad free YouTube on my phone....I'll beam it to my tv and get flooded with ads....that would be my wish.
No pop up or ad EVER has made me want to purchase it....it's just spam!

Hey there, sorry for the delayed response. Yes so i have vanced on my phone, and occasionally I'll chromecast the video to my shield so i can continue watching it on the tv. The built in youtube/chromecast service on the shield uses the official YouTube app for playback in that case and so there are ads.....i know there are a few other YouTube clients that work adfree on the shield, but i believe you have to manually launch those versions on the shield.....meaning sending YouTube playback from phone to shield will launch the official YT app.
It's definitely not a big issue, but it is something I'd like to see.
@louforgiveno Thank You for Explaining this so well! This is a super interesting problem I was unaware of. Definitely will investigate that!
