Bad to tether phone every time in in car? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically I'm looking at using my old nexus 7 as a permanent fixture in my car mostly for maps and music. What i want to do is Hotspot from my 6p to the nexus 7. So i would keep the 6p on charger and in tether mode all the time while in the car. Is this going to significantly hurt anything? Battery out otherwise? And why of so?
Thanks for any replies.

The only thing it could hurt is your wallet unless you're on unlimited data.

Agreed wallet unless on unlimited

I do it and tether my Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (car computer)
I have unlimited data
I did this with my LG G3 also.
I have a task that turns tethering on as soon a my car BT connects.

are you guys planning to do a dash install or just permanently mount it on a car mount?

I don't have unlimited data, but i already do the same thing with my phone, so it shouldn't use up any more data than that. Just afraid i ruined my last could phones from always charging when in car and having waze and music streaming over bt on

Your phone must be plugged in via USB to use Android Auto. If anything arises, just say your phone is always plugged into your headunit for Android Auto.
I'm plugged in my car almost every day to use Android Auto

experience as a phone?

just curious, has anybody use this as a primary phoneentirely replacing your smartphone? (to make phonecall, sms etc)
considering using a bluetooth headset means that the bluetooth on the tab needs to be on all the time?
how about the battery life from the experience? can it last a day like a normal smaller smartphone?
considering this to be my primary (dont mind if its dorky ^^)
originally prefer desire hd or hd7 but i did have a "big phone" fetish and suddenly this tab comes into consideration lol
also desire hd has a struggle on battery life too, if this 4400mah is better than desire hd, then why not?
thanks before
The tab is great as a phone if you carry a bag with you.
It will fit in your pocket but it will stick out.
I use it as day to day phone but certainly not a phone i would use when going out to bar for example.
I have a BT HBH-DS980 and i like this model because it is not around my ear all day long and has a good range with a small caller ID screen.
It works great with the Tab. sound quality is good.
As for battery life, as a heavy use i get about 1.5 days of moderate to heavy use.
To sum it up, it is a phone for day to day (going to the office etc..) but it is not a phone for every occasion.
1.5 day huh, nice ^^
at least its not struggling with 1230mah desire hd had and for some who can't even reach a full day use
using the hbh-ds980, do you need to turn the bluetooth on all the time on the tab, or you can just activate it via hbh just when you want to answer call?
the thing is if you want to make call, then sure, fired up the bluetooth and make calls
but when you receiving, is it too much hassle to turn on bluetooth 1st on the device and then the hbh?
fyi, never need to use bluetooth headset before, so im a full fledged newbie on this thing
is the 1.5 day use with bluetooth on all the time? (thinking logically that bluetooth will eat up battery, would be amazed if its on all time and you get 1.5 day)
I assume you are using the Tab with AT&T. Do you have good reception with 3G? Since it only has the 1900 band.

[Q] Galaxy Tab and bluetooth internet FROM other phone

I have HTC Touch HD2 with wonderful internet and voice rate. But I cannot connect Samsung Galaxy Tab to cellphone via bluetooth to get internet from HTC HD2.
Is there any solution (as it was made with archos tablet)?
This article sheds some light that it possible. But how to get PAN and DUN bluetooth profiles from archos firmware?
I made adhoc WiFi available according to this guidance.
But WiFi consumes a lot of power.

The point is more options never hurt. When i had a Nokia N800/N810 and a 12" PowerBook i used to tether them to my Treo via bluetooth 'cause it consumed less power than using WiFi to tether on both ends. Now this was years ago and even on an NYC bus going 30 - 40 mph streaming internet radio and general web browsing it was just fine.
Range is not a concern, how far am i from my phone that is in my pocket/bag/shirt and besides bluetooth has a range of about 10 meters (~30 feet).
I have an Epic 4G and just decided to get a 3500mah battery on eBay. Dang thing lasts 2 days with regular use, and with the wpa_supplicant mod to my tab for ad-hoc, i'm golden for hours of wifi tethering.

I agree the range wont be an issue. I was thinking about doing the same as you and held off because of power consumption (It's already borderline on modern phones, so can't imagine what will happen if Wifi is sucking the juice out of the device)
That said you may be better considering the Playbook from Blackberry. It seems it is exactly what they plan to do and you can probably trust them in terms of optimization of power consumption

Bluetooth tether or WiFi tether?

Which is more efficient?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
my thought would be neither: USB tethering i (guess) would be better for battery life, but would like to know for sure - wifi and bluetooth just seem to scream 'battery eater' on the phone, and i have a tethering plan and want to get the most out of it. bluetooth may use less juice than wifi but connection may not be as good.
anyone know if its possible to USB tether from android phone to NEXUS 7 ? or if its worth pursuing??

I tether from my galaxy nexus to my n7 on and off throughout the day it works perfect for me. My phone is running the vicious jellybean v1 ROM with tethering built in
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Via Bluetooth you save battery life but you get slower speeds and can only connect to one device... via WiFi battery drains more but speeds are faster and you can connect to more than 5 devices depending on the mobile hotspot.
Sent from my Nexus 7
speedtest on my phone shows 3.6mbps and while tethered via BT, the N7's speedtest shows 1.6mbps for DL
Although BT consumes less power than WiFi generally ( this may not be true in the future) WiFi speeds are faster than BT s you are "on the air" for a shorter amount of time thereby potentially consuming less power. It depends on the chip set used and the implementation.
Battery life on the Nexus should be your least concern so WIFI all the way especially if you're streaming videos. Nexus 7 is perfect WIFI tether companion for my HTC Thunderbolt on LTE.
ive been using foxfi with pdanet on bluetooth and it really saves on the battery!!
Well more concerned with the battery of the device I was using the tether with, my Galaxy Nexus.

[Q] Is anyone having GPS problems?

I like my N4 alright so far. I am having a problem with the GPS, though. It takes a long time to lock in on my location. I'm just checking in Maps, and it seriously takes 30 seconds for the GPS to lock on. Once it does lock on it's solid, but the time it takes to pinpoint my location is disappointing. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, are there any possible solutions for this problem? Do you think I could get a warranty replacement for it, even though the GPS locks on eventually?
I did a factory reset and it locks on a little faster now (~10s)
Well, I'm having the same issues again. I used GPS Status, and after 10 seconds I'm locked onto 3/18 satellites, 5/18 after 15 seconds, and 8/18 after 30 seconds. It's really annoying. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Hardware? Could it be solved through software? I've tried FasterGPS, and it doesn't really help. TIA
I always get an instant ~9m lock.

Yes, I got the same issues.
It is very annoying. I don't want to buy Korean products again.
For my iPhone 4 and One X, they all lock my location very quick and accurate.
But for Nexus 4, a lot of problems.
Working fine here. Just used it to driving around on black Friday lol

I don't have a gps fix issue but have a different question for those who have been driving around using their nexus.
I have been driving around using Google navigation (gps enabled) and music playing in the background on my Nexus 4. The odd thing is even though I have the usb car charger plugged in the battery continues to drain.
I went and bought a usb charger that supports 2.1 amp charging thinking it might be the old usb car charger not powerful enough but, nope, the battery continues to drain with the 2.1 amp charger.
Something I did notice is that with a 2.1 amp charger is that the phone drains much slower (minus 1% every 25 minutes) and if I turn off the gps the phone actually charges normally like when it's plugged into a wall socket.
When I was on my iphone 4 I could listen to music, use a tomtom app while charging my phone. At the same time. Why does the nexus 4 use so much power with the gps turned on?
Is everyone experiencing this? if not which car charger do you use?

Another thing I have noticed during my gps experience is that if I listen to music and charge the phone at the same time , there is a high pitch noise in the background that is really annoying. Is there a way to stop this from happening? And is this normal?

That's pretty much a maximum-drain scenario, with both the GPS and cell radios going and (during the day, at least) the screen brightness very high. I haven't done a lot of experimenting, but I looked at my battery graph after about a 20-minute trip with GPS and Pandora going, and that time showed an essentially horizontal, but squiggly, line -- my battery was at 80% at the beginning and the end. (It does charge when I'm not using navigation, though.)
I've had a similar scenario with previous phones. Generally speaking, when I'm using navigation, there are significant times when nothing is happening ("Stay on Route XXX for 21 miles"), so I turn off the display during those intervals to let the battery charge. I still get the voice prompt in time to turn the screen back on to see my next turn, so it's not a big loss.
Battery should charge regardless. Is your charger showing up as USB? Many car chargers are optimized for apple standard and only give 500ma to other devices. It is a quick and easy mod to fix it though just need to solder 2 pins together, plenty of tutorials online and discussion under any charger on amazon.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Turning off the screen sounds like a good idea, I will try and see if it improves. Been reading around lots and this seems to be the only solution. Just glad this isn't due to a bug or a defect unit.
Extra information: the 2.1 amp usb car charger when plugged into my phone shows AC charging mode.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I found a solution for my battery draining while using gps problem. The reason seems to be related to the data cable that is supplied with the phone. I bought an off market micro usb cable from eBay and when I used that in my car, whilst using google navigation, the phone charges up as normal.
I hope this help others too.

GPS working perfectly here. Even the very first fix on the very first day happened in <5 sec.
My GPS is terrible. It's been 4 minutes and still nothing. I'm using an app and see that i'm bouncing between 3 and 4 satellite fixes, but you need 6 to be locked on. the signal is also very low for all the satellites.
Could it be that I'm in Taiwan?
I've posted on another forum about this issue, but I didn't see this one until now. I had problems with GPS right away when I got my N4 on 12/10, so I did an RMA and got another Nexus 4 yesterday. New one's GPS is much better. (It has another problem...its volume rocker is wiggly and wobbly! I'll live with it). However, the first N4 seemed to do better yesterday than it had in the 10 days before. I have no idea why....there were no "fixes" put on or anything that would make it work better. Anyway, it sounds like some of you might have defective ones, and maybe you should RMA it. Just be prepared to possibly have a different problem when you get a new one!

Help me take a dump! or ask questions :p

Does it really have always listening capabilities when the screen is off? And could you do a video of it? I think we would all appreciate it very much.
Question, is it the same type of charging plug as a galaxy note 3 or is it something new. Because I hear there's a faster charging process now

Do you have the T-Mo variant? If so, is it loaded with bloat. Is the bootloader unlocked?
If it's the international (with snapdragon chip), does T-Mo LTE work?

The port changed back to USB 2 - I know wtf, right? Apparently too many people complained about the usb 3 port not being compatible - HA. Guess people didn't know you could still use a micro usb 2.0 connector? It does however charge just as fast when using AC.

It's the tmo variant - bloat is unfortunately about the same as the Note 3 - T-Mobile vvm, my account, tv, name id, all the google apps, - literally all of them, facebook... no messenger, and that's about it.

They changed the usb cable to a normal one, no more thick cable with the strange
wide plug... Samsung added a quick chargiing method which can charge the phone
50% full in 30 minutes, meaning that if the battery is drained it can fully charge it
in about an hour.
I always hated the new wide usb plug for the usb cable, a few days after purchasing
the Note 3 I found out that the normal old usb cable with the mini usb plug could can
be used on Note 3, I know the wide plug and the thick cable were meant to be used with
USB 3.0 however I tested the time it took to copy a 2GB file using my computer's usb 3.0
and the note 3's special thick usb cable and found that there was virtually no difference in
copying the 2GB file, and there was no difference in charging time.
I seriously doubt that it will fully charge in an hour. It makes sense if you do the math but there has to be a catch.
Yes the 50% in a half hour is correct but it switches to trickle charging at some point and thus takes longer.
This I think is just the built-in fast charging of the snapdragon 805, same as other phones.

Have you tried using GPS while charging the phone? I am considering switching from LG G3 to Note 4 specifically because G3 overheats when using GPS and charging at the same time. I'd rather not spend a bunch of money if Note 4 does the same thing.

If you're talking about using it in your car, my S5 does heat up quite a bit. It doesn't shut down or anything, but with the screen on full brightness, GPS running and charging wirelessly, it heats up a LOT. Keep in mind this is in 95 degree weather with the AC never really touching the phone.

Yes in the car. And I understand that it will heat up. The problem is if it's heating up to the point of stopping charging, because on a long trip (just when you need the GPS most) you can't use this functionality. My use case is exactly as you described - So Cal weather, full brightness (because sun), wireless charging and GPS. I know that's pushing the envelope, but for the price, I expect it to be able to do it.

This should definately keep the phone cool, not sure how you're wireless charging is setup, but you can always cable charge and then a universal vent mount will keep it super cool.
