Bluetooth tether or WiFi tether? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which is more efficient?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

my thought would be neither: USB tethering i (guess) would be better for battery life, but would like to know for sure - wifi and bluetooth just seem to scream 'battery eater' on the phone, and i have a tethering plan and want to get the most out of it. bluetooth may use less juice than wifi but connection may not be as good.
anyone know if its possible to USB tether from android phone to NEXUS 7 ? or if its worth pursuing??

I tether from my galaxy nexus to my n7 on and off throughout the day it works perfect for me. My phone is running the vicious jellybean v1 ROM with tethering built in

Via Bluetooth you save battery life but you get slower speeds and can only connect to one device... via WiFi battery drains more but speeds are faster and you can connect to more than 5 devices depending on the mobile hotspot.

speedtest on my phone shows 3.6mbps and while tethered via BT, the N7's speedtest shows 1.6mbps for DL

Although BT consumes less power than WiFi generally ( this may not be true in the future) WiFi speeds are faster than BT s you are "on the air" for a shorter amount of time thereby potentially consuming less power. It depends on the chip set used and the implementation.

Battery life on the Nexus should be your least concern so WIFI all the way especially if you're streaming videos. Nexus 7 is perfect WIFI tether companion for my HTC Thunderbolt on LTE.

ive been using foxfi with pdanet on bluetooth and it really saves on the battery!!

Well more concerned with the battery of the device I was using the tether with, my Galaxy Nexus.

Tether Nexus One to iPad?

Heya,
I am getting an iPad and want to tether. I have root and can wifi tether but wouldn't that kill the battery life on the N1?
Is there any better options
Tethering takes ~10-15% of battery per hour. Depends on the quality of your connection.
If you want to tether - you need to tether. No better or other options. And it doesn't require root.
i have done the tethering and it works good, it was not for a long period of time so i cant give you accuracy on battery %..
does the ipad have usb port by any chance?
no it does not..
I use my N1 to tether it to iPad all the time & it works great on 3G or Edge (Bit Slow on Edge Though) I usually keep it charging while tethered if I can as stated above it really does suck the life out of the battery.
i do this all the time with my ipod touch 4g. it works amazingly.
Works great for me. But if you want a more refined solution, you should probably go with the iPad with 3G and WiFi.

sure, if you can shell out how much more for the 3G option of the ipad, and then another monthly data charge, on top of the one thats already getting paid for on the N1...

Since you're a Bell customer - talk to Bell about getting the 6GB plan where for an extra $10 (I think) they give you a micro SIM to use in the iPad and share your data plan between both devices. You shouldn't even need to sign a contract to do so.
Are you on FroYo or using the Wi-Fi tether app?
The Froyo tethering uses hardly any battery life compared to the earlier modded ones. Use Froyo and maybe carry another battery if you want to tether.

[Q] Galaxy Tab and bluetooth internet FROM other phone

I have HTC Touch HD2 with wonderful internet and voice rate. But I cannot connect Samsung Galaxy Tab to cellphone via bluetooth to get internet from HTC HD2.
Is there any solution (as it was made with archos tablet)?
This article sheds some light that it possible. But how to get PAN and DUN bluetooth profiles from archos firmware?
I made adhoc WiFi available according to this guidance.
But WiFi consumes a lot of power.

Do you really think Wifi will consume much less power than Bluetooth ?
Yes. I absoluteley sure. I saw a table of comparison of power consumption.

OK I guess it doesnt ahve the same range of action, that would explain why. What about the bandwith ?

The point is more options never hurt. When i had a Nokia N800/N810 and a 12" PowerBook i used to tether them to my Treo via bluetooth 'cause it consumed less power than using WiFi to tether on both ends. Now this was years ago and even on an NYC bus going 30 - 40 mph streaming internet radio and general web browsing it was just fine.
Range is not a concern, how far am i from my phone that is in my pocket/bag/shirt and besides bluetooth has a range of about 10 meters (~30 feet).
I have an Epic 4G and just decided to get a 3500mah battery on eBay. Dang thing lasts 2 days with regular use, and with the wpa_supplicant mod to my tab for ad-hoc, i'm golden for hours of wifi tethering.

I agree the range wont be an issue. I was thinking about doing the same as you and held off because of power consumption (It's already borderline on modern phones, so can't imagine what will happen if Wifi is sucking the juice out of the device)
That said you may be better considering the Playbook from Blackberry. It seems it is exactly what they plan to do and you can probably trust them in terms of optimization of power consumption

Tethering Speed!!!

Hi,
When I do speed test in my phone I get around 3 mb/s for download speed but when I connect to my laptop via Barnacle and do speed test on my laptop, I get half of that. Around 1.4 mb/s. Any ideas why?
Thanks.
I have no Problem, and I use wifi hotspot function to share

To be honest might just be that some of that bandwidth is being used for tcpip between your cellphone and laptop. You figure that will take away some of your bandwidth. As to how much I haven't checked. When I got time i can do the exact same thing you are doing and try and estimate a reasonable bandwidth drop between phones speedtest readings and laptops using wifi tethering.

I generally get very similar speeds between the two (device and laptop connected to it). Not sure why they'd be different. Is it something that happens consistently, over time?
Try WiFi Tether also. I use both this and Barnacle because depending on location, I get better speeds with one or the other.

poor tethered performance

I have just bought an sim free Arc S
speed test app show a good solid 5mbps down and 3.4 up
how ever in tether via WiFi or usb, it struggles to get past 3 down and 1.5 up
my currently dead galaxy nexus would match its wifi tether speeds with the app
any ideas?
just tested now in the quiet time
phone hit 9.6 down
tether hit 3.5 down
both on speed test on the same server
WiFi tether seems very poor.
I have unlimited data inc tethering my phone are my broadband connection
I have line of sight to my cellphone companys local mast
I get an average of 5mbps busy time, 10mbps quiet time
My currently busted Galaxy Nexus would give me the same results of speedtest either by the app, or on the website on my i7 laptop
The galaxy Y thats my standby phone gives me 4mbps average gives me the same results of speedtest either by the app, or on the website
BUT
The SE Xperia Arc S, has hit 9.6mbps in the app, but its wifi tether will not go much above 3mbps
It also drops and hangs the tether A LOT meaning you sat there waiting a lot.
Ideas ?
Try another theter and report if there's the same issue.
" theter" ?
What's that?
you mean the USB tether
ok, tried that, marginal improvement, still not getting above a stable 3.5mbps for HD streaming, and the connection hangs (pauses) a lot lot more.
yet the phones speed test app still cranks out great results
No, I mean a different WiFi tether or hotspot or AP ...

both are using battery constantly listening for new events. actually SyncSMS is most efficient since it uses Push Notifications to tell the other device when it should sync a new message
Are you referring to tethering? bluetooth uses less battery but i believe wifi is stronger

Bump this. Anymore opinions?
I would say Bluetooth, Wifi always drains my arc a lot quicker than Bluetooth does, when it's connected.
Just look at tethering, bluetooth uses a lot less power than wifi does
