Tethering Speed!!! - Atrix 4G General

Hi,
When I do speed test in my phone I get around 3 mb/s for download speed but when I connect to my laptop via Barnacle and do speed test on my laptop, I get half of that. Around 1.4 mb/s. Any ideas why?
Thanks.

I have no Problem, and I use wifi hotspot function to share

To be honest might just be that some of that bandwidth is being used for tcpip between your cellphone and laptop. You figure that will take away some of your bandwidth. As to how much I haven't checked. When I got time i can do the exact same thing you are doing and try and estimate a reasonable bandwidth drop between phones speedtest readings and laptops using wifi tethering.

I generally get very similar speeds between the two (device and laptop connected to it). Not sure why they'd be different. Is it something that happens consistently, over time?

Try WiFi Tether also. I use both this and Barnacle because depending on location, I get better speeds with one or the other.

WiFi speeds

I never really use my wifi on my phone even though I have it at my house. But last night I connected to wifi to compare download speeds with my sons droid x. Well come to find out that this thing is downloading videos at 1.5gbps !!!! I could not believe it, is this a normal speed for the Fascinate? I also have rubiks rom with the data throttle remover. Could I get some feedback, just want to know what most people are running on wifi. Thanks.

1.5gbps? Are you sure that its not mbps?
At that speed, are you downloading videos within a second?
If you are download at 1.5gbps, that's unworldly fast. You mean mbps? Also, Wifi speed also depends on how fast your home internet service is in the first place.

It has to be Mbps; the max speed for wireless N is around 300 Mbps.
correction
My bad guys it is"mdps" After I posted I realized that I mentioned to put mdps. But I still think that's pretty dorm fast, it beats every laptop on the house and this is a phone.
You still probably want to say mbps. Today's phones can match any laptop on the a,b,g,n WiFi band. It all depends on you isp speed and what type of wifi you're using.

Just to let you know wireless N has virtually nothing to do with download rate. That has to do with your ISP wether it be Verizon's Broadband or any ISP... Wireless N can reach speeds of 600Mbps with a dual bonded router and dual bonded adapter... This will only matter if you transfer files on your LAN... Not over WAN... normal maximum bandwidth around the country is anywhere between 1.5-25 Mbps... not to say there isnt faster.

[Q] crappy wifi performance?

I seem to only get about 200kb/s via wifi on internal networks -- other people seeing the same thing?
mine is working good here...10mb per second...
mine is fast 14.6 download 4 up
14 down consistently which is better than some of my laptops get
Mine is super fast compare to both my modded n1 and g2. Usually the phones do 4 gbps down and 1.something, the xoom doubles
The speed: 9 down and 4 up.

Download speeds are quick and speed tests match my Dell laptop.
No issues here...

i always find that when speeds let down or connectivity problem arise then reset. I reset modem, router, and laptop and then all is good in the world.
Yeah, my xoom's wifi is dropping its connections to my wireless router. I will reset everything on my home network. But I still think something is wrong. I will also try a tether from my galaxy s 4g to see if I get the same loss of connection. I will respond in the next day or two on what happens.

Mine is working.fine. reset my friend

Yeah my xoom will only load half of sites, no matter how long I wait. Wont load facebook or engadget at all. Xda works fine though.

Well, I said I would respond in the next day or two. Well, I've downloaded speedyest.net app from my tetherred phone while my wireless network was resetting. From tether: 2.60mb dl .60mb ul. From wireless network: 17.9mb dl and 2.9mb ul. No connection drops now. Things seem to be fine since resetting network and leaving it off for 10+ minutes.
Mine is working fine...way better than with 3g. Not sure about the signal of verizon in my area, my galaxy tab from tmo is faster.
I got 20M down and 1M up on my wi-fi. My Droid X can barely get 6M down and 1M up.
Not quite the same issue - my speed is fine - but I've noticed the Xoom gets 1-2 less bars of signal on WiFi in the same location than my iPhone or iPad.
It's also quite variable - depending on the orientation of the device, I watch the WiFi signal meter go up and down from 4 bars to 0, and even drop the connection. Meanwhile, my iPad is perfectly happy.
I have also noticed it's worse on 802.11n 5GHz vs 2.4GHz.
What else other than speed test.net app? Lol.
Here's a tip on how to increase your wifi performance. Not by much but it helps:
Use an aluminum foil sheet. Put the sheet behind the router and point it to where you usually use your device.
My ps3 read 92 percent, a 24 percent bump. The router is located in the living room where it has to travel through 2 walls to get to my room. My nexus and the xoom read 3 bars constantly vs 2 bars before.

WIFI Drop off

Has anyone been having issue with the WIFI dropping off if the device hasnt been rebooted in a day or so?
negative. could be your router, or something you've installed? kernel?
Both Xooms in my house have this problem on my N network. The device often drops the wifi connection and the only fix is a reboot. My HTPC, DX and wife's D1 don't seem to have any trouble.
I have had this problem in the past, but has been pretty solid for me as of late. Probably a router issue or a kernal (if custom) issue.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
I have have this problem since day one.
G router with multiple devices running and only my xoom looses connection.
Only for a brief moment though. When it happens, I wait a couple of seconds and it comes back by itself.
100% stock zoom.

Occasionally I get this straight from standby, the Xoom is very slow to reconnect. As a work round I put a WiFi toggle widget on the desktop. A quick off/on reconnects.
I have had no problems with wifi. My wifi has never disconnected, I have left my Xoom on for two weeks without restart and it still worked great. It doesn't disconnect when Xoom sleeps.
I got the Xoom WiFi since came out in Canada, I've had no problem with wifi, it always stays connected. (Have tested G and N).
My Xoom drop the WiFi once in a while but not often.
My iPads, iPhones and a few laptops never drops the WiFi though...
Use to have it with my gTab but not my Xoom...as of yet.
yep. at my work there are multiple access points - the one closest to my workstation is a consumer-grade linksys, all the rest are professional grade. my xoom drops the consumer-grade access point all the time. the other access points throughout the building are fine, as is the access point at my house. i've played around with the advanced settings according to a couple of posts i found on here, but it didn't help. cycling wifi off and on again usually fixes it, but it's annoying to say the least. i think it's safe to say it's a known problem with some xooms and some access points.
what router are you using? If it happens to be a D-Link, they are know for dropping connections all the time.
Anyone try a 5ghz only mode? I haven't had the chance yet and was wondering if it could be better on the front of dropped connections.

I tried the 5 ghz mode, and this same problem persisted for me.

Speedtest Users ... I get incorrect results, maybe you do too.

Hey guys,
I've used Speedtest religiously to test both OTA data and WIFI since I bought my Epic. Recently (I believe since I went to a GB ROM) Speedtest comes up with bogus results (proven).
In fact, I get different results depending upon the ANIMATION QUALITY setting!!
ANIMATION QUALITY @ default: 12Mbit WIFI
ANIMATION QUALITY @ minimum: 18Mbit WIFI
speakeasy.net/speedtest result : 22Mbit (my fiber cap)
The 3g and 4g results have been equally hampered. I register on average 1/2 the BW with speedtest than I do with any other method, like speakeasy.net.
I've been rackin my brain for a couple of weeks regarding my crappy 3g speeds, and it turns out its actually Speedtest - no real change other than that program not functioning properly since changing ROMs/Kernels.
Just in case I might save someone a massive headache like I've been having ... there you have it.
Running Marcusant's Revival V1 and Samurai 3.3.0 60hz/250mhz GPU.
(It's a GREAT combo!)
Cheers, everyone. Happy holidays!
I always run it at minimum quality. It says in the settings section that it loses accuracy with higher quality.

I think you're right, I turned the animation all the way to and my 3g readings are 7 times faster!

About a 50% improvement on mine with animation slider all the way to the right. Strange, as I'd hope one would have no effect on the other.
I think this problem started when I switched to a GB ROM. Hopefully an update will address this.
In the meantime, just browse to speakeasy.net/speedtest to check your BW.
You guys who chimed in also on GB?

I think you can assume just about everyone is. But I seem to remember this being an issue with the app on all versions, actually.
Checking Http://www.SpeedMatters.org from both my phone and computer gave me accurate results. I know it's not as handy as an app, but it works!
Guys, keep in mind that numerous factors affect your bandwidth:
Bandwidth cap provided by ISP
Shared connection
Quality of connection to speedtest server
Number of hops to speed test server ("internet distance")
Occasionally the weather
Time of day (peak internet usage hours)
1. While some ISPs allow subscribers to exceed their rate plans, you will still be limited at some point by your ISP.
2. Cable broadband "shares" your connection to the ISP--more people in your area served by your cable ISP = less bandwidth for you, to a degree. Also, if someone else on your local network is streaming Netflix or downloading the latest patch for BF3 they will be hogging bandwidth.
3. "Quality of connection" can mean a myriad of things, including #4.
4. A "hop" refers to a router, gateway, switch, etc. that your data must be routed through. Each hop adds roughly a millisecond to your overall ping. The higher your ping, the lower your maximum achievable bandwidth will be.
5. Weather can adversely affect connections, especially wireless connections.
6. While the time of day in and of itself is not a factor, this affects when the peak loads on the internet will be. Generally, you will see higher, more stable test results during off-peak times, such as the early morning hours.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, nor did I go very in-depth with any of my explanations. For more, check the Broadband Reports FAQs. You'll have to dig around a little (check the DSL FAQs, there's a lot of general bandwidth stuff in there), but the place is a goldmine of broadband knowledge.
Thanks for that, however, in this case specifically, speedtest consistently falls short exactly the same amount. That is very good evidence that the issue is not due to "other" factors. My bandwidth as measured in browser has been super consistent also - always nailing my fiber bandwidth cap without fail.

poor tethered performance

I have just bought an sim free Arc S
speed test app show a good solid 5mbps down and 3.4 up
how ever in tether via WiFi or usb, it struggles to get past 3 down and 1.5 up
my currently dead galaxy nexus would match its wifi tether speeds with the app
any ideas?
just tested now in the quiet time
phone hit 9.6 down
tether hit 3.5 down
both on speed test on the same server
WiFi tether seems very poor.
I have unlimited data inc tethering my phone are my broadband connection
I have line of sight to my cellphone companys local mast
I get an average of 5mbps busy time, 10mbps quiet time
My currently busted Galaxy Nexus would give me the same results of speedtest either by the app, or on the website on my i7 laptop
The galaxy Y thats my standby phone gives me 4mbps average gives me the same results of speedtest either by the app, or on the website
BUT
The SE Xperia Arc S, has hit 9.6mbps in the app, but its wifi tether will not go much above 3mbps
It also drops and hangs the tether A LOT meaning you sat there waiting a lot.
Ideas ?
Try another theter and report if there's the same issue.
" theter" ?
What's that?
you mean the USB tether
ok, tried that, marginal improvement, still not getting above a stable 3.5mbps for HD streaming, and the connection hangs (pauses) a lot lot more.
yet the phones speed test app still cranks out great results
No, I mean a different WiFi tether or hotspot or AP ...
