I'm wondering what the experience has been for people using Opera 8.6. I installed the free beta version months ago, which is working, and I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy the latest retail version.
Any Opera users care to comment on their experience?
Generally I find this a good browser but there a few problems which I must mention:-
1) One cannot configure it to store its Cache to SD card. There are ways around this but nothing out of the box.
2) For large web pages with graphics and annimations vertical scrolling becomes really painful as the page does not scroll smoothly with the vertical bar. This gets really really annoying at times.
3) There is a slight lag between pressing of a link and the browser responding. You tend to press the link repeatedly thinking the browser has not responded and then it hangs. However this is something you soon get used to so not that much of a problem.
4) Quite often it does not load the page fully and gets stuck towards the last bits of the page. This is more so for pages with annimations. The progress bar gets stuck when the page has almost been downloaded and only a small percent is left. You then have to refresh the page and usually the 2nd attempt gets you through the full page.
4) The worst problem for me which has really limited its use is that once you have used this it stops some other programs to start and you have to soft-reset. Typical examples are Netfront, Planmaker and Textmaker. After using Opera and having killed it these programs will often not start without a soft-reset.
As I said at the start it is still a good browser and so I am not mentioning the good things but these are just the glitches which seriously mar the user experience of an otherwise good product. In fact though I have a registered version I find myself using it less and less and prefering Netfront over it simply of some of the annoying bugs I mention.
Regards
I agree with smrz completely, and have suffered from the issues outlined, but I'd like to add:
- Opera 8.6 can't handle some pages very well (I'm thinking of the Yahoo pages where you need to log in). It just doesn't render them in any sort of useable fashion.
Having said this, I still use it as my main browser, and find that in combination with PIE, then I can do pretty much everything I want on the web.
Cheers,
Steve.
are there any differences between the beta version and the retail version?

Here a post I wrote on moving cache of Opera on SD card...
http://www.planete-htc.com/index.php?mod=forum&ac=voir&cat=101&id=5514
Open opera.ini file, go to [User Prefs]. At the end of that paragraph, write that ligne
Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\x with x the folder you choosed for cache on your SD.
For french roms, Storage Card must be replaced by Carte de Stockage
Opera is not perfect, but is largely better than other mobile browers...
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure I will pay for the retail version at this point.
Re: the difference between beta version and latest retail version, I'm sure there are many and would depend on the beta version. Main one that comes to mind is that I understand the retail version has a tabbed browser interface while my old beta version does not.
I wonder if Opera mobile will ever support Java?
opera 8.5/8.6 does not support java & javascript?
what about vbscript?
Where do we copy the opera.dll
I am running a trial version. Have the cracked opera.dll file. Where do I copy this to in order to prevent the 30 days to run up?

Here's an idea: how about *paying* for it? I mean, it's only $24 or about 2% the RRP of an HTC Universal. Don't try to kid yourself that circumventing anti-piracy measures is anything other than stealing. If you use a cracked copy, you are a theif.
I agree I always buy software. I have 50+ apps on my IIs and all are paid for you, shouldn't try and steal money from hard working developers who are trying to make a living.
I am finding Opera 8.60 retail to be AWESOME!
In fact, I ditched the JasJar some months ago and have been using a JAM for some time. I only bought a new JJ cos of Opera on VGA. It's rendering most pages such as my online banking (which PIE cocked up completely), it zooms perfectly, and it's just amazing! If WM5 had come out with a decent broser on day one it would have driven operator ARPU's and internet usage. Now I have google with me wherever I go. I kind of had it on my JAM, but not really with that crappy low res screen.
This is a no brainer app and worth every cent!
Piracy
Nice thinking and have no objection. But if you got something for the first time you simply dont go about splashing money around. It is only fare that I want to make use of it, see & decide. If you check 8.6 is not the latest version it is an old version. By paying I would now be getting v9 (see I checked it and am planning to) but need to see if it is what I need / want.
Stereotyping aint really good. Peace anyway....
PS: Besides doing this kind of stuff is always the best way of learning the logic, structure of how a device works. And that is my main interest in these stuff. Not getting all for free. Thanks for your comments anyway...

I'm using Opera on the trial. 30 days is plenty of time to make your mind up. If you don't really use it enough to make up your mind in that time, then don't buy it. If you do, buy it. $24 really is next to nothing for a product. That wouldn't a decent sandwich, cake and a cup of tea!

They provide a trial for that purpose. If they didn't, I still wouldn't agree. Afterall, I can't try out a holiday before I buy it and if I don't like the terms, I can simple boycott the product.

I'd hardly call it stereotyping. Stereotyping is painting a group with a broad brush and, in doing so, encompassing more than rightfully fit the description. However, calling all pirates theives is not stereotyping as all piracy is theft.

I know I'm on a very high horse here, but I cannot and will not tolerate piracy. It *does* hurt people (developers, distributers, support staff, everyone in the chain and their families) and they only reason why it's not as widely regarded as wrong is because everyone knows they will more than likely get away with it. Steal Opera is no better than stealing a wallet or an item of jewellery or anything else. It's ALL theft.
I'm using an early beta that does not have the 30 day limit.
Am I stealing?
The reason I posted the question is because I am not averse to paying for a good finished product. It seems craigiecraig4 (if I have the name spelled right) would say that Opera 8.6 is a good finished product.
That is the type of opinion I was soliciting.
I think anyone who has a beta version of software on there device have in a way paid for it because they put there device on the line to test the product.

Dude - your articles are GREAT! Going thro many of your past posts now...keep it up!
So for the past few weeks I've been using the speech to text, speaking slowly and enunciating every word as much as I can so that it gets it perfectly. But it always messes up. Hmm.
Well, the past few days I've started speaking faster, and I've noticed that it comes out with better accuracy. Even if I speak sometimes really fast, it still gets it perfectly. Anyone else have similar results?
What about some other tips and tricks for using the speech to text?
(One is of course swipe the keyboard left to right to bring up the voice input.)
Also, you can say "period" and "exclamation mark". What else is there?
And how do you do capital letters?
It must be caching your previous STT (speech to text) files, so that could explain why it seems to get better.
another n00b question
this feature requires data services right? from what i've heard your voice is sent to google's servers for processing, is that correct?

No it's not caching and just repeating what I said previously, because it's getting things perfectly that I've never said before.

If its caching, its for things you've spoken before....not for things you speak for the first time. Thats what caching means. It could also be part of the intelligence code on Google's side.

That was my point, that it's NOT caching. I know what caching is. Re-read the last few replies; your confusion on the "nope" mixed you up badly.
Does anyone know whether Google's voice recognition software does in fact cache things, i.e. you can "train" it into understanding you better over time? I'm asking this because my accent's not exactly standard American, so I haven't made much use of the feature (it does get many of the things I say admirably, though).
you can spell words for it, i'm not sure if you can do spaces or not though, I haven't tried.
How do you get voice search to Navigate to a someone's address? (Home Screen -> Search button)
I said "Navigate to John Doe's Home" and it got it 100% perfectly, but it doesn't actually bring navigate to my contact's address.
What's the trick to making that work?

Someone somewhere said something about it learns as it goes, or it gets better at understanding you. I'd like to know how, as there is no way to tell it if it got things right...
I was trying to tell it 'Post Buzz' and it got it wrong every time, there was no way for it to learn, if I couldn't tell it when it was getting it wrong.

Good, your idiocy is not needed in my thread I tried to explain, but you didn't understand, so sure, good riddance.
Let me check though, cause I'm confused. I thought caching was all about storing and bringing back something that had been used before? If it was the first time he said it, how had it cached that phrase before?

Andy, Your definition is exactly the same as mine. However Paul starts his retort (quoted) with a negative (nope) and tries to back it up by admitting that he said buzz.google.com for the first time and it worked. (absolutely no caching involved in this case so his 'nope' makes no sense and does not disqualify my statement. Hence the nope is pointless/illogical and only serves to demean me , His future posts (quoted below) illuminate his attitude/character quite clearly. ).
If it worked fine the first time and you accepted the translation...great.
Only accepted translations are remembered by the intelligence/caching logic. You can prove this my mumbling a few in-between words of a sentence that was translated correctly in the past... the translation will still be accurate.
Some memorable quotes:

You suggested that his increasing successes were due to caching.
If caching were the (only*) reason for the increasing successes then he would only be seeing increased successes on phrases he has previously spoken.
In fact, he is seeing increasing successes with phrases that he has never spoken before. This is counter-evidence to your theory that caching was the reason for the successes.
Thus, he does not believe your theory is correct. "Nope" may be a brusque way of saying that, but his counterexample does, actually, weigh heavily against your suggestion so a negative response is warranted.
(*) You said "It must be..." which would tend to imply that your suggestion was the only reason behind why things would be improving. His counterexample minimally indicates that it cannot be the "only" reason for improved successes, but if you want to relax your statement to "One reason might be that it caches" then his counterexample doesn't strictly rule out your suggestion, but it means that there have to be other factors coming into play as well which are helping it understand him better on new phrases.
I'm with farbear. The way I see it, you basically said 'It got it right because you've said it before and it remembers' and he said 'Nope, it's the first time I said it' you then got all upset... I really don't get it.
Found this file on Acers official Website, it may help some and clear some things up I dont know.

I never said it was
there is simply more info at that thread regarding the change log and user's inputs.
you could think of it as a collaboration... why does it have to be taken/view as a negative ?
I'm still baffled when it comes to Acer's updates.... such a mess... can't tell what's head or tails anymore...
I'm in Canada... originally I was OTA updated to Acer_A500_1.139.05_COM_GEN1 after I bought the tablet for a week. ( I'm assuming Canada is along with USA as North America region )
and yet... here, in this thread it said those in option A are supposed to be for (UK/France/Italy/Spain) ??
and USA are in option B ??
and now today... there are new reports out that reads like this for USA....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175139
freaking Acer... how the heck does anyone keep on track anymore ??
I think they started out as a mess and it snowballed from there and they couldn't get it together (organized )... I don't think the day will comes when we just have 3 updates that covered the whole World like the PDF indicated... ( Option A, B, C )... yeah right... what a joke !
I don't even bother with it... there's always latest available posted at our XDA anyway... Acer can't be rely on
<rants over>
I would just be happy knowing whether the 4.010.08_COM_GEN2 is newer or older than the update I received today, 4.010.38_COM_GEN1. I can understand the higher numbers being newer, but what about the GEN1/GEN2 stuff? For the record, I'm in the U.S.

Totally agree! just ignore him his opinion is worth nothing anyway
Android pay is as useless as Apple Pay since the merchant needs to have a contactless machine. Samsung Pay, on the other hand will be more useful as it can be used virtually anywhere. Plus, I'm very disappointed by the very small number of banks supporting it in the UK.. No Barclays, no Santander, no RBS/Natwest etc...
bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35874420
According to the BBC article from yesterday:-
Google has said that it will extend Android Pay to the UK "in the next few months".
Guys
Android Pay is finally live in the UK and can be downloaded from the Play Store (if it doesnt show up on the one on the phone go to web-version one)
At the moment only couple of banks are participating but i can say i installed and used successfully at Waitrose with my First Direct Card
One thing to keep in mind - is that for some users (esp Samsung S7/Edge users) when you try to add a card it tells you that Android Pay cannot verify you are using a legit version of android. This happens to un-rooted users and is due to the DPI change; as you remember you can change DPI in Samsung Display Options - if it is set up to condensed it wont work - so you need to revert back to Standard - then add the cards and then you can revert back and use your android pay
Have fun everyone
and lets hope more bank will be used soon (eg AMEX)

Have fun everyone
and lets hope more bank will be used soon (eg AMEX)

Kinda wondering whether to bother setting this up, or just wait for Samsung Pay to launch. It can't be too far away now surely.

Not sure when Samsung pay will come to UK - probably in Autumn most likely
Android Pay is easy to setup and use - as long as you keep the native DPI on your phone (if you use the condensed option it wont work)
i like the condensed DPI so i am not going to use AP for the time being (also since i do most of my transactions on my Amex and its not supported)
hi guys can anybody tell me can i be able to pay with Android pay if the phone doesnt have NFC chip
like tap and pay function ?
Android Pay does not work on Rooted Device.
Mine is rooted, TWRP
Check this out, I was able to add a card "Just my bank is not supported"

Here at xda, we post in English. Which is an actual rule here. If you cannot speak English, it still needs to be translated. I did it myself for the forum, but just an FYI for future posts. Can be found here if you need reference. https://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81 further more, what some Joe schmo says on a website means nothing. Most of the idiots from honor on social media said Oreo wasn't coming h to the h8, but yet it's in beta. These "representatives" know annually nothing about what's being developed for the phone and you're just silly if you think they do. Hell, the main guy from honor usa couldn't even tell me how long it takes an OTA to go from them to the public. In short, this isn't anymore solidifying than the goofballs saying we weren't getting Oreo because some random rep said so. I hope we can agree to disagree on this instead of doing what most of XDA does and "flame" each other. Have a good day.

It is true, I should had add the source from the beginning that is my fault.
But I really did post in English and translated that part about the Honor 8 and it is not my fault that the source behind the link is in Hungarian. I might have mistakes since my English isn't perfect but I hope that does not count
So the story behind this Hungarian topic is that Honor got even more separated from Huawei in Hungary, now they have their own distribution channels, marketing, management etc. and in order to be more influential they collaborated with the largest tech media site called "mobilarena" (like here in XDA) and opened a Honor topic in order to answer questions. Obviously the first question was about Oreo for Honor 8. Few days later they wrote back that they have been directly negotiating with the manufacturer but he is not able to provide any specific information about the (Oreo) update (sorce). However he can tell that a smaller update gonna happen in June... and the rest is in the first post. So I am not judging anybody if they don't believe in the representative after all those false information. Have a nice day as well!
Backup Internal storage goes offline in June 2018
Like title says, in June there will be some kind of update not sure if Oreo or just monthly security patch, but go to the: Settings > Advanced settings > Backup and reset > Huawei backup, try option backup data it will give you options how to backup data: Computer, Internal storage or USB storage.
Under Internal storage there is red message about offline feature in June 2018.

On Honor 8 (FRD-L09), B405, EMUI 5.0.1, OS 7.0
That update (virtual, three finger screen shot,...) or Android Oreo or maybe something else, how knows.
EDIT:
Maybe it is based just for the app from Huawei (Huawei backup).
Funny, child company Honor using Huawei app and cloud storage (cheap move)
Maybe in June 2018 they will give new option for Honor users.
Honor backup on Android 7.0
To be sincere i saw the changelog for the Honor 6A. I downloaded and installed the firmware on my grandpa's phone and it has those features. But i think H8 won't get anything because it already have double knock to screenshot , knock with two fingers to record and vol down pressed to recall HiVoice....all this is included in the Honor 6A update (about 407 mb) so no need to "update" H8 with functions already present. I know...3 finger swipe down isn't the same as double knock...but wtf cares?

I have a L-09 and I can assure you that with the latest B405 I do not have all that features described (some of it - yes but not all). Maybe just as the Chinese version has more features other regions might have some differences as well. Maybe L02 did not have all these features yet while L09 had already had some of it.

Haha sorry for my ignorance. Didn't properly read the changelog the first time around. You are right a couple of those features aren't available on other models yet.

If I install this through FF, because it's not downloadable through the System Update app, am I voiding my phone's warranty?
