Hey guys, so ive had my nexus 4 for around 4 months now? might be more and the battery is just terrible, obviously we already know this as ive seen so many people post about it and such
my question is this, what do you guys use to save battery? Im currently on XYLON ROM with Perf-enhanced-Stock-422 kernel which isnt bad, theres nothing wrong with it in fact but i literally only get around 2 hours screen on time, terrible i know
ive heard people say flash android 4.2.2 and then flash a custom rom, apparently it helps or something? not fact but ive seen a few people solve it with this issue
What kind of roms and kernels are you guys using? And what governor?
Cheers guys, Jack
I've seen most people running Franco kernel with either cyanogen mod 10.1, PAC or paranoid android. You'll probably get a similar battery life with all of them, and probably the best your going to get.
Check your wake locks, use juice defender, check you're not dropping in and out of signal (hammers battery), turn of location settings...
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
AKOP or CM with franco give me hours (4+) of calling or 1.5 days of moderate use.
I also have notification widgets on so I can quickly switch BT/WIFI/Brightness AND I make use of nfc tags so when I'm home wifi is auto turned on and when in the car it turns off.
From my experience, these battery saving apps such as juice defender are not good, you shouldn't use them.
About the battery life, there are tons of recommendations... stop syncing, turn brightness to as low as possible, turn off 3G when you don't need it...
Dont use your phone..
Seriously now, the battery is not bad at all, and in battery usage cases you need to state your usage of the phone (games, mail, 3g on most of the time? widgets? surfing and screen on time)
Without those parameters none can determine if you have wakelocks problem / some app is draining your battery or eventually maybe it's only psychological problem
Take in mind even on auto brightness, if you are playing heavy games dont expect to last a day or so..
Tricepz is on the money!
Need to analyze Your usage!
Most importantly you need to understand that this is not a primary game console or music player.
Things that drain battery fast!
1) Live Wallpaper
2) Games
3) Phone calls
4) Equalizers
5) Apps
Best to monitor your usage!
Personally I use the phone as follows for 16 to 22 hrs of usage.
Bus
1) 4 hrs of music with quality headphones that have noise canceling tech. Abel Planet 200b with built in amplifier.
2) 3 phone calls a day!
3) No games ! Have a tablet for that
4) Minimal reader for new feeds only updates once a day.
5) Music app either Apollo or NexMusic great music players without equalizer. simple controls.
On an average day headed to work paying bills I see 10 to 12 hrs easy.
Busy day on my phone 8 to 10 hrs.
Turn off services you don't need or use.
WIFI - Turn it off when you leave your house and when you don't need it. Leaving it on will drain power as it will continue to scan for a connection.
GPS - Turn off your GPS if you don't need.
Sync - Sync when you need to. Turn it off and access it manually.
Bluetooth - Turn it off when you don't need it
Location services - Go to the Settings menu and head over to Location access and switch "Access to my location" to off.
Backup services - Head over "Backup & Reset" and uncheck "Back up my data".
Screen brightness - The lower the brightness, the more power you'll save.
Apps - Applications like facebook and Google Maps will remain online as it runs in the background. As a result it will drain your battery. It can prevent your phone from entering deep-sleep to preserve power.
Signal - Connection is very important. If you're in a area where service is low to poor, your phone will draw more power to stay connected to the nearest cell antenna/tower. It's best to turn off on connections if you're in a no service area. Simply put the phone in "Airplane mode".
Usage - Battery life is dependent to whatever tasks you are performing on your phone. If you play games daily for a long period of time, then you should expect the battery to decrease dramatically. Conversely, if you just email, text, browse the web, make calls, little to no games then your battery life of the phone should last for quite a long time.
Useful apps
Greenify - This application allows you to hibernate apps from starting up like facebook, Google Maps and many more annoying apps that run in the background when they shouldn't be running. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5vYXNpc2ZlbmcuZ3JlZW5pZnkiXQ..
Wakelock Detector - This wonderful app identifies apps that running during your usage and sees which one has been running the longest without your consent. You can use this with Greenify. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...EsImNvbS51enVtYXBwcy53YWtlbG9ja2RldGVjdG9yIl0.
BetteryBatteryStats - Similar to wakelock detector but offers a more in-depth look of wakelocks that active during your usage. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wiY29tLmFza3N2ZW4uYmV0dGVyYmF0dGVyeXN0YXRzIl0.
Kernels and roms
One major reason why root is amazing. Kernels offer tweaks that are beneficial for the phone to perform smoother and offer amazing battery life. Offers more tweaks as well like gamma and undervolting. Roms can contribute a small portion of battery saving but not much.
Did I miss anything else?
Adding Maps to Greenify usually helps a lot regarding battery life, can leave GPS on for other apps when doing this and won't suck any battery.
try franco or faux and then UV and UO ` its works for me, 4+ screen time easily :fingers-crossed:
I didnt expect so many comments! ive used franko kernel and air kernel before and no change
ill try some of them apps that everyone has mentioned
again thanks guys! Jack
Just use a ROM for a while, let the battery do some cycles, and use the phone for that, as a phone, remember that we have a Quad Core here, i'm on stock rooted only, and last night i get 12h20m37s with 4h48m SOT with about 7% left, so that's pretty good. And i really use my phone, Twitter, Flipboard, G+, Wifi on all the way, Sync on.

I guess you are one of the lucky ones! i hardly use my phone for gaming, i have 2 games on there and i use facebook twitter tumblr etc 3G is only on when i leave the house but other then its on wifi
just got to 46% with 1hr 50mins screen on time so ill probably get around 3 hours today.. i just dont think its good enough :/

Yep definitely something's not right, facebook is known to be a battery drainer, i suggest to you that open it up on the browser and uninstall the app, try it!

With 80% left I have 1hr of screen on and 10mins of call time, this is with whatever kernel the latest CM nightly is using, so yeah you could definitely get better but I have to think facebook is the contributor since I too have twitter (plume) and tumblr without the same battery drain.
greenify is a must to disable rude apps which do thing without asking, like facebook, games, etc, they connect to internet to download ads and sttuff, facebook being the worse cpu eater
i use 2g only, wify in home, disable wifi outside,
only wassap active, some opera mini browsing, pics, talk, sms, little gaming, i get 1.5 days
off course heavy gaming kills the battery, because of 3d, even 2d games drain the battery because of the screen, like angry birds
using stock 422 + franco
I like to use JuiceDefender only when the phone's battery gets really low and I want to sacrifice some functionality. It works well, but only if you allow it to keep 3G/Wifi off when the screen is off.
I use facebook so much though, ugh :/ ill give it a go and if the battery lasts longer then ill get rid of it
single biggest difference I've seen is to stay on wifi all the time as much as possible. I leave it on no matter what. Granted if you are out and about, it won't help but once you get to home/work/friends/etc, your phone will immediately connect and start saving you juice.
91% after 8 hours with light usage at work. With 3G, I normally would be approaching 60-70% by now with light usage. That 3G drain is real and should be avoided whenever possible.
Don't play games. It seems like no matter what game I play, it'll almost always lock my cpu to the max frequency until I exit. Even really simple non graphics intense games.
Well ideally you're biggest battery drainer should be the the display. If it's not then read below.
1) So for the screen the best way to go is to get a stable custom rom like xenon and tinker with the auto brightness settings. Tweak out auto brightness settings to your liking (they're generally very overbright by default) and you'll see major increases in data.
2) Screen aside your other biggest drainer is cell radio. Particularly if you're in a low signal area it will drain your battery really fast. So if your using wifi anyway be sure to turn data off and switch to 2g. That way you'll have a strong signal and 2g drains less battery anyway.
3) As some people have mentioned already. rogue apps. Social networking apps are a huge drainer in this regard. Especially facebook. You just can't have that app on your phone and get decent battery. As for other apps which draw on unnecessary background data, Greenify their a**es.
Im trying to fix my battery life on my Moto X. Im unrooted so I havent greenified anything. Im just wanting to know what you're setup is (if you're rooted/unrooted or if you have xposed stuff installed or greenify) Anything is helpful
Before you start to go nuts over this:
1) Consider your network strength. If you are in a highly saturated area, your battery life will be better than someone with a lower saturation.
2) Some people turn off all syncing services, virtually rendering their smartphone not nearly as "smart." I mean, what's the point, unless you REALLY don't have access to a charger?
3) Brightness levels
4) Apps that are installed. Certain apps just utilize more cpu time than others. Social media apps are notorious for this.
If you know that you used to get X SOT with an older phone, use that as your benchmark, not someone else's SOT.
*All this above is only valid considering you know what wakelocks are and have those under control.
I don't do anything special. All Google sync ON, All PUSH apps ON (Facebook etc), Brightness Auto, WiFi and GPS manually controlled by me, Touchless ON, Active Notifications ON.
Don't know about LTE, but I was mostly on WiFi when I got 3-4 hours of SOT with 40-50% of battery left.
I am rooted and have exposed but no apps or modules for battery savings. I only uninstalled Spotlight and Moto Migrate
I usually get close to 5 hours SOT.
Unrooted
On Wi-Fi a lot of the day, but not the entire time.
Wi-Fi, GPS, and bluetooth are always enabled, even if they aren't in use.
Auto-brightness usually, but sometimes I manually set the brightness a little higher than auto-brightness would.
Push notifications / background sync enabled for all Google apps and services, Bank of America, Circa, Pocket Casts, Timely, and Twitter.
Push notifications / background sync DISABLED for Facebook, Instagram, and XDA Premium.
Google Now enabled.
Only email account syncing is my Gmail account.
Active Display, Assist, Connect, and Touchless Control are all enabled.
Usually listen to couple hours of podcasts per day.
Usually one phone call, 10 minutes or less, per day.
Some texting with several people throughout the day. Probably send about 50 texts total per day.
The rest of SOT is browsing with Chrome, looking through my news and social apps, reading XDA, and watching YouTube videos.
Also, if I'm done using an app for the time being and don't plan on using it within the next few minutes, I swipe it away from the app switcher.
In my case, I've gotten nearly 4.5+ when on Wifi the vast majority of the day, but it drops to around 2.5-3 when you mix in cell data... I go to the gym over lunch and I'm there for about an hour with typically 1 bar of 4G the whole time.
I also felt battery life was better on Dalvik... that's just me though, can't speak for anyone else. I didn't run any scientific tests on it but it did seem to provide better battery life. I ran Dalvik for about a week, switched to ART for about a week, then installed Xposed with a few tweaks (GravityBox, AppOpsXposed, Greenify) which forced me back to Dalvik. Noticed better battery life almost immediately and have been using ever since.

I agree. I am running ART because I find scrolling within some apps to be smoother and battery life doesn't seem quite as good, but there's not a huge difference. I was getting 5 to 5.5 hours SOT most of the time with Dalvik, and I am getting 4 to 5 with ART, so still pretty good.
WiFi helps battery A LOT on any smartphone. Battery life is usually around double on WiFi vs cell radios only.
When I'm at work I usually shut off WiFi and GPS, it seems to helps a decent amount.

Is that normal that I have only 4h30 screen on when using my phone only for texting and like 1h of internet browsing .. Plus 10 minutes of clash of clan .. Nothing more ..
I'm very skeptical about my battery life because I see that everyone having more than me with more heavy usage..
I installed wake lock detector and the top one is 1013 ( audio mix ) and the second one is android system which is audio mix too .. Don't understand why I have so " poor " battery life ..
PS : location and sync are off all the time !

BetterBatteryStatts from Play will give you info of the top power consumers. If you are on 3/4G a lot then the phone will use more power too.
i`ve got max 5hours screen on, on stock ane2 with root

It's not typical of course. That is obvious when you compare your time to the vast majority of other posts. You are clearly on the short end. But not unheard of either.
Why is impossible to discern since you haven't provided many details. 4.5 hours of screen time.. but how much time overall? How much connection time to Wifi and a lot of other things? Detailed battery stats showing how much time various apps and services are on would offer hints. If your net and texting are LTE connections and you have a few piggish apps, there you go.
You may have GPS off, but audio apps can be heavy draws because music play will spin hundreds or thousands of wakelocks. Some players are worse than others. But you didn't tell us which ones you are using or how much music play either. Some apps like Tunein can be abysmal. Apps that constantly poll the net like Google Now or poll the camera like Skype can put dents in your run time.
Perhaps you have a bad, damaged or third party battery. And so on and so forth. We don't have nearly enough details. All we can say for certain is that you appear to have a very short run time. But that wouldn't be at all unexpected if half of a dozen of your heavily used apps tend to be heavy draws. If you debloated your system, optimized a few things and made some tweaks, you might well find that your run time increased 50%.

Yeah you're right, i'll try to give more information,
for now all i can give it's that i'm on 3G/2G (no LTE) because i'm a Train driver and i travel a lot.. I plug off the phone from the charger at 9AM and at 9pm i have like 15-20% left.. with ~ 4.5 screen on
I'm not using music player because i'm listening music with my ipod. Google Now desactivated, Skype not installed, Facebook not installed too !
Location off and sync off all the time.. Wifi off too
All i do between 9Am and 9pm it's approximativly 300 text (sms) 50 whatsapp messages, 10 - 15 minutes of Clash of clan, maybe 1 or 2 Snapchat and like 1hour of internet browsing.. Essentialy News website..
That's a normal day for me ! Sometimes i might take 2-3 picture of place i like.. And maybe play an other game to pass the free time (but that wasn't included yesterday report and that's occasionally)
I'll try to take some screenshot of BBS and battery info today or maybe tomorrow to give a better report
Thanks for helping guys
Thanks for the details. That actually doesn't sound that bad.. after 12 hours of run time, you've got 15 - 20% left. The 4.5 hours of screen time is misleading.. giving a vague impression that your battery only lasts ~ 5 hours.
But actually, it's been on 12 hours.. with enough battery remaining to run several more hours so.. your overall run time is something like 15 hours, during which you sent 300 SMS, 50 miscellaneous messages, some Snapchats, 15 min of gaming, an hour on the net and 4.5 hours screen on. Nothing wrong with that at all. If you happened to use your apps differently you could easily see 7 or 8 hours screen on while more or less doing what you currently do. It's just that your usage happens to involve less screen time.
If I missed something, perhaps you could narrow down or elaborate about your concerns? Is there some use that you want to do during your workday that you don't feel you can?. But it you were just concerned that 4.5 hours didn't sound that good.. I don't think that is anything to worry about. Your overall usage when you explained at length sounds perfectly normal to me. If you want to aim for a straight number, you could tweak your phone, use inverted apps, etc and etc and gain another 3 - 4 hours screen or run time.. but to what end? Your current usage takes you through your workday with 20% remaining.. I'd say mission accomplished.
.
Hello Android Users.
I'm writing this post a little bit pissed of about others SOT ( 5-6 ; 7-8 H ) because I can only get 4-5 H SOT.
We all know that when we set up a new phone we have our own apps , configurations and settings.
So I , and maybe other people wants to take a look closer up to this subject.
I will post in attachment my SOT , Standby usage , Signal , Installed apps and other settings. I ask you guys please share the same.
If you are not going to post the same please don't post anymore.

Uninstall facebook if you could sacrifice it and use chrome instead. I haven't used the app in at least two years but I've read that it hurts battery life
It doesn't matter that much believe me. I want to see other settings configurations and apps and make a few tests.
ok some info about mine, and some ideas you can try:
Usually i get between 8 and 11 hours SOT and my best was 12 hours.
I get this with SimplRom v5, Xposed Framework, Amplify, Greenify, and Disable Services.
I don't use the stock facebook app but Tinfoil for facebook,
I dont use the stock tumblr app, but Stumbler,
I do use stock camera,
and i also use chrome quite a bit.
i do use air gesture control for email and the gallery,
sync (on 4 email accounts) is always on push settings,
3g and wifi switch automatically thanks to tasker,
brightness is on auto most of the time (otherwise low manual brightness)
and my fast charging has never been set to off.
so...there's plenty to do for you to improve SOT, but it depends on how far you're willing to go.
there are a few guides around for Amplify and Disable Service which can save a lot of wakelocks and unneeded services,
and you can test different apps to see which drains less than stock
hope it helps a bit :good:
Not far by putting a custom rom or rooting my phone. So... ? Anyway there are plenty of users who gets much SOT on stock also. The question that keeps me awake is why
Hello people. After lots of tries I improved my SOT time with 2 more hours ( I used to get 3-4 hours - you have printscreen in previous post )
Now I get 5-6 hours ( printscreen in attachment )
How ? Well I just simply bringed down the BRIGHTNESS level to like 5-10% ( I used to have it on 100% )
Running on Stock Android 4.4.4 Kitkat with the same settings as above, only thing i changed it's brightness level
Maybe you can try yourself guys and get the same results as I got.
I get 3-4 Hours daily & I can live with that
IMHO (no offense ) there's no point having a powerful device but lower its "power" down to get more SOT.
After having it for more than 1 year I still can get 8 - 16 hours of battery life with 1 - 4 hours SOT (depending on usage).
I'm using Stock Latest Lollipop ROM + custom kernel without tweaking it + A LOT OF sync (Facebook, G+, Line, Whatsapp, BBM, Instagram, Path, Periscope, Pinterest, Skype, Twitter, Gmail, Outlook, YMail, @mail, GDrive, Dropbox, Mega, OneDrive, BOX, Garmin Connect, eBay & many more).
I use my device for Radio Streaming (everyday), Play games (mostly online games everyday + offline games occasionally), Youtube or other Video streaming (everyday), Checking news, Browsing internet, Online Shopping, Creating Checklists, Social Interaction (Facebook, Line, Whatsapp, Twitter, Instagram & Path mostly everyday), Auto sync my gym+daily activities via Garmin Connect (using my Garmin Vivofit 2 everyday) and reading (occasionally).
EDIT: I almost forgot... Phone calls & Texting (everyday)
My Brightness setting is auto, Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC is always ON, gesture is always OFF, Smart Stay is always OFF.
So it's a worthwhile 1-4 hours of SOT without sacrificing anything at all.
I have a 16,000 mAh Xiaomi powerbank in case I need some more juice on the go which only around twice a week (can be more if I'm on FRENZY MODE ).
I have a car charger in case my powerbank is out of juice which is NEVER happen
I also have Smart View Cover with Wireless charging that I often use at home when I hate to deal with cable (but now I use cable as I play with my Gear VR often )
Even with that settings I can get around more than 2 hours on Gear VR. (Watching 3D movie, Youtube Streaming, Listening to music with 3D Visualizations & Play some 3D/360 games)
Enjoy your powerful device without the fear of low SOT
Hehehehe... lately i've never reached 4 hrs SOT on data! Usually it's about 3 hrs SOT on total 12 hrs of use only! Sometimes it's even 2 hrs SOT!
It s not a such a big sacrifice turning down the brightness level. I got your point. But some heavy users are interested in getting more battery life. Up to everybody s choice
Best android version for note 4 is kitkat?. still worth it in 2017?
It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Moto Z2 Force before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I haven't been able to just drain the battery with this screen time from full to 80% in battery saver mode trying to get every drop out of the phone. This wasn't heavy gaming or CPU intensive stuff, just YouTube and some social media. Still great time compared to the sot of my M9
4 hours on the first full drain.
I've managed to get from 100% to 8% with screen on time being about 5 and a half hours with only using the battery saving from 15% I'd add my screen shot but I'm unsure how you add them on here
Okay but I've been listening to music since 7:00 this morning and I'm at 53% now ( it's 4:00 so it's been about 9 hours )
IDK if this helped me at all but I used root booster and used stability boost
4 hours and 5mins for my first full drain using all features in Greenify with aggressive doze. Also have L Speed installed suing it's balanced profile.
I've hit 5hrs SOT for my 1st three days of owning this device in a row.
Hello all, I am the new owner of Tmobile Z2 force. I have owned this device for a month. There is something I like to say about battery life. For those who are experiencing short battery life, there is something consuming the battery. I have found the cause.
On the homescreen on stock launcher:
Clock widget- if you tap the tiny weather icon above the time in the clock widget, the weather app opens up. Then click the three horizontal line menu on the top left of the app. A pop-out menu is open. Then click on weather settings. As you can see, the current location enables by default. This option causes using GPS constantly; it's like a live GPS constantly. This drains the battery so much. Toggle it off and manually add the location helps battery life much better by a huge margin.
On the system menu:
Connected Devices tab- toggle off the NFC and Bluetooth for those of you who don't use them very much. It also drains the battery too.
Security & location tab- Click on location. Then click on scanning. From there, you can see WIFI and Bluetooth scanning. Toggle both of these off. It drains battery like crazy.
Mode: There are different kind of mode- high accuracy, battery saving, and device only. I use battery saving mode. I test with device only, it consumes battery more than high accuracy, but not battery saving mode. Only use high accuracy if you rely on google map navigation a lot. My opinion...
After changing those settings, I was able to get 4 hours and half of screen on time at the most with 17 to 18 hours on battery AT 50% level in the end of the day. I did not charge halfway. That is pretty amazing for this tiny 2700 mah given in this phone. I'm blown away.
I also like to mention that I am a light to moderate user. I use 9gag, chrome (occasionally), greader (rss reader), whatsapp, youtube (occasionally), google hangout, ip webcam, gmail, outlook, and skype for business.
There are several factors that affects the battery life such as bad wifi. In my work, there is a wifi, but it drains my phone like hell. My wifi at home doesn't drain my phone battery. It's easy on it. That's something to look out for.

Thank you so much. You cannot believe how drastically my battery life improved. I was barely getting 2 and half screen on time. You are a savior. Thanks again.

Thank you very much, I just bought my phone and was a little disappointed with battery life, GPS is a real battery drainer.
i kinda wish active use went into battery stats, because i stream podcasts and music all day at work, at the end of my day my phone is somewhere around 40% and only has like 2hrs of SOT but has been on "standby" for close to 18-20 hours by the time i plug it in at night
Great SOT
I'm very happy with this phone, durable, slim, blazing fast and modular.
For one of the thinnest phone with SD835 im very pleased with battery life.
Screenshot with Oreo Update
Normal use, spotify for an hour or so, a lot of instagram, some facebook and twitter, and Youtube over bluetooth on my car, moderate web browsing without using battery saver and remaining 8% of battery
I have over 7h sot by watching videos, playing music and messaging by using 5GHz Wifi, mobile network in standby. Rest of battery by 25%.
Here screenshot, hope it's working now. Have do it convert to jpg.
Ok, don't work. But, 7h, 13m is the sot.
This phone inpressed me with SOT! I owned a Moto Z and battrey was a dissapointment. While this has a 2750mah battrey it cant be much better than this!Planning to buy a powermod but now its not needed:angel:
Getting 8Hrs+ SOT on Oreo

Yes, it's great. Much better as on my old phone. Sure the 10nm chip is here very helpful. And the OLED panel, which is much better as just Full HD. I see a big difference between just 400dpi and this. Watching film on this, so important. I'm short-sighted, so I can really see it. My battery had 2733mAh at the beginning and now 2705mAh after last security update. What's you capacity?

Screen on time is excellent! I'm quite surprised and impressed because the phone's battery isn't that large.
Regularly getting between 5 and 6 hours SOT!
My highscore: 6:58
