Whenever I play games on this thing it is very smooth for the first few minutes then it just turns into a choppy mess. Obviously this is because the CPU is getting hot and throttling back but I'm just wondering if it's like this for everyone or have I just got a defective unit? I do live in a warm climate (Australia) so this doesn't help but I don't see a lot of people complaining so it makes me wonder if it's just my phone that has the problem...

Angry Birds and Hill Climb Racer are both very low GPU demand games. So that's probably why.
As to the OP, the Snapdragon 810 is notorious for throttling when it gets warm. That may be your issue.

OK thanks. I'm definitely seeing a fairly significant drop in performance and usually only after a few minutes. I'm rooted running elementalx and I can see that the CPU temp hits 50 degrees celsius quite quickly. I think it starts throttling after this. Can anyone else who is rooted check their temps while gaming?
Running stock ROM.
I've played many graphic intense games and haven't had any lag/stutter issues. I'm a big mobile gamer and haven't had a problem with any games so far. (Complete stock no root)
Just my 2cents!
I play Boom Beach and the game will sometimes close down without warning or any prompt to send a report. It just disappears.
I play arcane legends for several hour at a time and never see any drop in performance.

I now realize that the only thing my Captivate was better at was gaming. And not because of the screen. There's so many glitches in most/all of the high end games, making them unplayable. And its not just the multitouch bug - I dont hold my fingers down for that long. In modern combat every 5 seconds my guy turns around 180°. And in Dungeon Defenders my screen will bug out a just go crazy when I die. Which happens a lot because my guy moves like he teleports 5 steps in front of him instead of walking.
I though this Tegra chip was supposed to help? Especially because the dungeon defenders game IS a tegra game.

Can't play good games that I paid for.
Your phone is probably defective. I recommend returning it.
I really can't do that... this is my fourth one. 1st, gps wouldn't work, second a 1x4 area on top of screen wouldn't click, third froze up like my Captivate. This one has been perfect, until I started to get my old games that I had on the Captivate running, and found this out.
I'd rather not return it, and probably get a worse one.
Well tell me about it I went through 6 Atrix in 30 days lol but I am happy with this one now.
These games are being updated as we go along and they just don't support Tegra2 processors yet but it will be fine in another 30-60days or so.

Tennis no offense but these games are phone specific in many ways and you know this so complain tot he manufacturer for results not us.
Oh, so you're saying it's kinda like the AT&T thing? They advertise as 4G, but they're still working on it?
That would kinda of make sense I guess... so in future updates the Tegra chip will become utilized?
I have not had any of the issues you are talking about. Dungeon Defenders HD/Delux runs flawless on my Atrix. Do you have the most up to date version? And did you get the app legally or bootleg version?
Bought it through the market. Its the tegra version too.

I can't comment on Dungeon Defenders, but anyone able to play Monster Madness? That game lags like no other when I'm playing it. Biggest waste of money...
Maybe the overclocking will fix it, but still, you shouldn't have to OC.
EDIT: This is specific, but anyone able to get FPSe working (specifically FF7)? It runs great except for screen transitions/entering battle; it will slow down tremendously during these scenes. It's funny though, because my frames per second remains at around 60 even when the screen and sound are slowing down.

I play dungeon defenders, and it runs silky smooth on my phone. never had a bug. actually playing it right now. The only time I have issues is when the server messes up (not my problem................ or is it, AT&T/MOTOROLA, hmm?)
try installing the big file for Dungeon defenders manually from their website to make sure you have the right file
Hello
Im a new owner of a Samsung galaxy S4 I9505. Im experiencing big problems in a game called Modern Combat 4, which has great graphics. Its often unplayable during multiplayer (and sometimes singleplayer) due to excessive fps drop. Naturally game is original, bought on play store, device not rooted and just booted... Why? Oo
I remember with my iphone 4s i could play Modern Combat 3 withouth any fps drop T_T
Thanks
This can perhaps be a software optimization issue. I have an ipad 3 which can play MC3 perfectly fine but MC4 is messed up with frame rate drops all the time. But then, any issues should have been fixed by now as the game has been out for like 9 months or so:what:

The game is pretty graphic intensive. I ran it on my i9505 international version rooted running AOSP with stock kernel.
Frame rates is definitely lower than what I use before (Xperia S).
I have to use SetCPU to dial up the speed and it ran much better but heats up a lot.
My gut feeling tells me that it has something to do with the stock kernel.
I'll look into it later and let you know.

only modern combat 4 seems to be able to stress my device and give so bad performance, especially during multiplayer matches
Its Modern Combat 4 the problem not your phone... there is an actual problem in the game. it doesn't even play in 1080p anymore after the update. i've overclocked my phone like crazy and removed any thermal throttling. it still lags a lot in multiplayer. The same thing happened when i had my HTC One... I think it has to do with poor optimization for the snapdragon 600 because it doesn't seem to work well with any phone with that processor

Yeah well.. GTA also still lags like hell
Me Gusta!
My i9505 stutters in all games, literally all. Even lighter ones like subway surfers, vector, mini motor racing. It drops a couple of frames randomly every few seconds, its 60 but then drops to 57 or 53 and then immediately goes back up.
Heavier games like Vice City, San Andreas, NFS Most Wanted, Iron Man 3, Dead Trigger, Dead Trigger 2, Shadowgun Dead Zone lag and stutter like hell.
NFS MW gets from 25 to 35 fps, GTA VC goes over 30 but often even drops slightly below 20. GTA SA gets 30 max with it stuttering and dropping to around 20. Dead Trigger 2 and Shadowgun DZ get 30 fps but every couple of seconds it suddenly drops to like 28/25/23 and then quickly goes up. Modern Combat 4 goes below 30 as well.
Anyone else with this problem? Or it's just me? Any solutions?

I wouldn't say I am having the same problems but DT2 simply won't budge from 35fps on any setting except ultra, which has its frame rate cap go up to 60. Weird.

Yea cpu/gpu are ok, running at 1890/450, I even tried overclocking them, but same fps :S

... Are you willing to wipe your phone? It might be worth a try.
Alternatively, see if you can reinstall the games (although I doubt that will work).
I don't have 4.3 (running 4.2.2), so I wouldn't know a workaround for your firmware. :/
I have a feeling its about optimization from the developers of the games and not our hardware throttling. Just like how subway surfers will never get 60fps even on the iPhone 5s but the 5s flies with other games. I honestly believe our S4 is capable of running games like GTA at 60fps just fine.

Yea that seems to be the problem. That is the only thing that could explain the same exact stutters and low fps no matter which rom, frequency, settings you use. I guess I should've gone with I9500, looks like it's the only one getting games optimized for when it comes to s4.
any fixes for this?

I am extremely frustrated with this issue!
I am coming from an S3 and I never had any lag problems with any games! On the i9505, with most games, even less-demanding ones such as PvZ2, after 5 minutes of playing, it starts lagging like hell. Also the phone gets really really hot in the upper part.
I have KT kernel and the KTweaker app, but don't know what exactly to change. Can someone please tell me some settings for this?
why gs4 prevent lag during exection
Galaxy S4 always lag during playing all type of games because of overclocking. I notice Htc one is the same specs interms of cpu/gpu but it is totaly perfect with zero lag so the reason is the gs4 overclock to the speed of 1.9 instead 1.7 like HTC one.
Hi please refer on this thread. It might help you. I had the same issue until it was resolved. ?☺ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2773601

What if those games just can't see 18:9 and are hardcoded to run in 1280x720? And when stretched they stutter somehow?
another example is RR3 which throttles to 18fps often which is way too low for such powerful 821

Well, you basically choose in which aspect ratio you wanna play games that don't support 18:9.
You can choose the usual default format 16:9 (with black left and right borders), optimized format 16.7:9 (with small left and right black borders) or 18:9 (fullscreen). It basically crops the games window to your liking. Really easy to set up and works like a charm.
Most games don't support 18:9 yet, only some new ones do, but i play pretty much all of them in 18:9 np. Performance is the same in either of those ratios, i'm pretty sure, as it only crops the image.
If a game is hard-coded to lower resolution then i'm pretty sure it plays at that resolution and doesn't up-sample. I've played a cpl of games hard-coded to 1080p and they actually still looked great despite running on a 1440p screen. You can still choose aspect ratio tho.
I've had no issues. So far I've played Pokeymanz Go, Magikrap Jump, Devil Twins, Sailor Drops, TriggerKnight, Dungeon Vilage, Game Dev Story, Ninja Village, Plague Inc, Infectonator, Tales of Link with no issues. The only time I've managed to make this thing stutter is when streaming music over BT and the phone switches back and forth between wifi and mobile data a couple times (this happens on my way home in the afternoon. It picks up my 802.11ac, then I whip around a corner and it drops it, whip back and it picks it back up).
I've played King's Raid on lg g6 and its lag pretty bad, i did change resolution , battery saver and graphic quality but still lag big time.

I play this game on my LG G6 and I can confirm that it does lag like CRAZY! Especially BD Raid DAMN!!! Feels like its gonna blow. But everything else is super smooth. Weird thing is my Note7 Exynos 8890 runs Kings Raid on max settings super smooth.
I have zero lags. But I have my G6 pretty much debloated and I always disable the, "Game Battery Saver" option. I think that option makes a difference.
But I mostly only play racing games and COD games.

It seems it has problem with 2D games. My wife's G6 lags like crazy in Angry birds pop. I tried to force GPU rendering in developer settings, but didn't help. I even lowered game resolution in battery settings
No lag at all playing pes2018
Yes, it does lag, but only when charging and playing at full resolution. It also only charges at about 1000 miliamps when screen is on. Not a huge deal for me, but I do hope oreo update will fix this.
Mine has this weird thing where a game will be super smooth for about 5 seconds but goes choppy, then I have to pause and resume for it to go back to smooth for another 5s.
This mainly happens for me in RR3, Plague Inc, Beast Quest and a few others.
Must be a software issue as it's obviously capable enough hardware. Hope Oreo fixes this!
Can't deal with low frame rates!!
Anyone else had this issue?
For me every game is working quite well except Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes. Which I really like so it's quite annoying.
