Yeah yeah, I've seen the similar threads but they're not up to date especially with gingerbread released. I'm due for an upgrade on the 26th and want to get a new phone before college in mid August. I've posted a similar forum excluding the nexus on the gs2 forum, but I want to hear the other side. I prefer the 4" screen, but also want to root and not have motoblur, and I hear the phone lags when you do that. I realize the nexus s is single core but are dual cores that much faster with current software? I like longer battery life and an led notfier since I'm coming from a blackberry Curve. Can anyone say how the screens compare, I've heard the pentile display is terrible, but have yet to see for myself. Finally I'm told that the atrix does not have neon support, is that a difference for the average user? Thanks in advance.

I've had a nexus s and it does not lag at all, neither does my atrix. Single core or dual core it doesn't seem to make a difference to me. In my experience the atrix has better battery life. As far as the screens go that's a matter of opinion, the samoled seems more vibrant but is utterly useless in sunlight. As much as I hate BLUR, I chose the atrix over the nexus s and once we have an AOSP Rom I will have no regrets whatsoever.

I had the nexus s, it wasn't much of an improvement over my custom rommed Captivate, so I took it back. I was also looking forward to the Galaxy S2's release in America, until I got Gingerbread on my Atrix. There is no way the GS2 will be a substantial improvement over my Atrix now.
The Motorola Atrix was voted as the best phone at CES, and with Gingerbread it lives up to those accolades. Froyo and the ridiculous price of the lapdock killed this phone's initial release.
Take a look at the top results on Smartbench 2011, there is a reason Samsung delayed the GS2's release and overclocked it to 1.2ghz. Once the Atrix gets overclocked to 1.5ghz, those top results will change.

Also, does the lack of NEON support make a difference for the average user?
EDIT: reread my post, thought I didn't include the question, reread it again, realized I did.

I was worried about lack of neon. But honestly it doesn't even matter at this point in time, apps don't even come close to making neon cpu make any difference whatsoever.
By the way, just got an atrix today! Found craigslist superb deal.

If you want to play normal or hi profile x264 it does.
Really annoying to have to re-encode to baseline x264. For xxxx's sake this phone can push 3D pixels like Samurai Vengeance II but can't handle HD video encoding, WTF.
I had nexus so and atrix together for two weeks. There is major performance difference between the two. Nexus s's 512 mb ram was the deal breaker for me, it was not enough. I think I'm spoiled by the 1gb ram.

I would stay away from the Nexus S. Ya, it's Raw Goog but the sub-par RAM, single core chip and cheap plastic construction just aren't worth it especially on a new contract.
I'm loving my Atrix on GB, rooted, de-blurred (Titanium freeze) and running Go Launcher EX. I experience no lag, web browser is lighting fast, GPS is the best I've experienced from a phone. That's my experience and opinion. Considering the timing of your upgrade I would suggest checking the SG2 out as it may be more to your liking. Some people like Sammy HW some don't (I personally hate it, especially their damn "Chin" design philosophy).
That said, you cannot go wrong with the Atrix, it's an excellent phone. I traded in my Inspire 4G at a loss and don't regret my decision one bit.
Oh, and DL/UL speed in Houston, TX I've been averaging 3.5mb down (6 max) and 1.3mb up (2.1 max). Inspire 4G never made it over 2.5 down (1 Ghz. w/ 768mb RAM). Atrix is on par with my friend's EVO 4G (Sprint WiMax, he avgs 2-3 but has a max he's gotten of 7 once) and another friend's T-Bolt (Verizon LTE, 5-6 avg and a max of 8). And yes processor and RAM do affect your up/down as it's partially determined by the amount of data your phone can process, another reason to stay away from the S at this point.

Might have been my thread. I apologize, but I was wrong. Even tough performance has increased substantially (from 8-10 fps to an average of 24) when playing high profile h.264, it still isnt perfectly smooth and, for some reason, the episodes of Game of Thrones were mute for me, which indicates a continuing lack of support to audio codecs. After converting it with the Handbrake method, it worked flawlessly.
@OP
The Atrix and the SGS2 have different offerings. SGS2 has a standardly overclocked processor, a bigger, brighter screen, less weight, and a GPU accelerated browser. The Atrix has a much higher pixel density, better battery life, and a specialized game store (Nvidia Tegra Zone which, despite the lack of titles in numbers, the ones it DOES have possess highly improved graphics over standard versions).
And for many of us, it has a lapdock, which is a perfect netbook replacement if all you do is work with word, excel, and light web browsing, being lighter and having better battery life than many netbooks. Its also fun like hell to play at customizing it
I like the overall build with the Motorola Atrix, but without the GPU accelerated and NEON support, would I be at a significant hardware disadvantage for everyday use? I feel I wouldn't. Also, any complaints about the screen?
Okay. Opera provides a gpu accelerated browser that is blazing fast. The screen is really nice, but you may notice grainy greens.
Edit: oh, neon support isn't an issue, at least for me. Most of my videos can be played using moboplayer.

The atrix also is not sized like a giant brick but weighing like a feather toy (the #1 reason I didn't go for the SGS2). Form factor wins for me. Not to mention in Australia, atrix is 150-200 dollars cheaper.
I would say though with froyo it is noticeably inferior. But that's no longer an issue, whether stock or unlock BL/custom ROM.
If you want a big screen and fast phone....sgs2, if you want sething new and try some mods atrix, if yu are a hard modder HD2

Now that there's actual photos of the AT&T galaxy family, would anyone consider it a superior choice? I kinda like the idea of a physical keyboard but I'm used to portrait like on my blackberry.
Even with new kernels and software upgrades? They're at least supposed to be even but instead the nexus 4 lacks battery and processing power in nearly every test. Is this still the case and if so, why?
I've read that the battery in the Nexus 4 lasts longer and search a term called "thermal throttling"
BTW, benchmarks arent worth ****
if your talking about Quadrant .. it is NOT thermal throttling.. it doesn't throttle within 30 seconds, the only test my Nexus has throttled with was glbenchmark , and that was with everything ticked..
Tweaked kernels and hacks (like undervolting) adress some issues for sure ! Less heat/throttling and even some battery gain. But i'm pretty sure the Optimus G is still ahead in perfs AND battery, without even consider its own tweaked kernels. (-> I own a Nexus 4, but i have only tested the G with everything stock)
I guess the question is about the price you are ready to pay, and where you stand considering system updates or modified user experience. Besides that, the Optimus G just is a better device. Both are equally smooth in every day use though ...
lol if youre basing which phone is "better" off of quadrant scores, you need to reevaluate what youre looking for in a phone. High quadrant scores don't always translate to a smooth, fluid, enjoyable user experience. The nexus 4 is lightyears ahead of the optimus G in terms of user experience.
Guys, I know that benchmarks don't say too much about daily use. But still. Those two devices are almost EXACTLY the same. What part of the nexus 4 did google **** up so badly that the optimus g comes out ahead in almost everything?

I think you need to worry about your own phone SGS II
Optimus G has Android 4.04
Nexus 4 has Android 4.2.1
That is a much bigger deal then overaggressive thermal throttling which will be fixed eventually. Also as someone coming from the LG P999, I wouldn't want to depend on LG for any software updates again. It will get its planned update to 4.1.1 but after that I wouldn't count on anything.
I don't know what the OG is getting for battery but I've been getting over 5hrs screen on time lately which is pretty good.
I'm think LG is tampering with it's products - you would think that phones with supposedly similar hardware would perform accordingly. After all the N4 is running pure android and most folks would of given the edge to the N4. The truth is out there somewhere just saying

Accusing me of trollposting... How about you read every single ****ing test that is out there? All of them say that the optimus g is miles ahead of the nexus 4 hardwarewise.
@ Kyra of Fire
Apple's gotta be doing something right. Their stupid phone lasts twice as long as the nexus 4 even though it has a much higher display brightness and a smaller battery. Oh and before anybody comes up with "Blabla but nex4 has more cores, they need more energy." Yea right, I don't know how many cores you think your phone uses on webbrosing but it won't be more than 1 or maximum 2, so not more than the iphone's got.
http://www.autoomobile.com/news/lg-nexus-4-battery-life-tips/1009720/
I quote:
GSMArena put it to the test and found that when it came to talk time tests four of the 1.5GHz Krait core remained idle and the battery did well with 14:17 hours. However it was 1 hour short of the Optimus G, which the LG Nexus 4 is based on.
In regards to the web browsing test on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, this was the worst ever seen. The LG Nexus 4 therefore didn’t have to do too much to beat it. It went on for 4 hours and 34 minutes on just one charge. If you look at the larger picture however this is still a poor score when you consider that the iPhone 5 was two times as long.

The A6 does use a very beefy GPU. Apple has tended to do this for quite awhile now. The iPad 3rd generation and 4th generation are notably unmatched. This is not due to benchmark tweaks, they just source better chips for their products.

So i was curious to see how the g2 measures up against the g3, i stumbled across this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nipun6-Grpk
In this video, you can see that after the devices boots up, that the g3 is still taking freaking ages to load the weather widget and the first homescreen generally. So here my question: would the screen's resolution really be that taxing on this device? Is there a reason why a phone with the resolution of that of a g3 would take so long to load just a single screen? Is the high resolution the culprit? Or do you guys think we will eventually get optimizations?
Has anyone contacted LG asking them about this and if we will see an update that will fix this? And i'm not talking android L i'm certainly hoping we get something before that. To me it makes no sense at all, i'm going to take my pc for instance, unless i'm gaming, it doesn't matter which resolution i'm using the OS will probably run the way it's supposed to as long as i, of course, am not gaming.
Now i hope someone with more experience can chime in, i've experienced the occasional lag on this device, it's not as snappy as i expected it to be, but i'm not that disappointed just yet. I'm just hopeful that this thing will eventually settle in and lg g3 will release an update.
All i'm looking/asking for is if this weird behavior can be answered logically, as to why it is so or are we really dealing with just pure optimization?
edit: ugghh!I just headed to the original development subforum to see if we have aosp roms, unfortunately we have to wait for the boot loader to get unlocked ( i know probably old news for you). I was hoping that someone running aosp on the g3 could chime in and lecture us on the potential of this device or if it's really as choppy. Too bad, guess we'll have to wait for LG. . .
There could be many reasons for it taking longer. That test is really bogus.

Regarding the PC resolution. The screen has a set number of pixels it has to draw, it never changes. If you change the resolution, you're only scaling the display so there will be no performance increase or decrease it will always perform at that set number of pixels the screen has.

When you change the resolution on a PC is just scales up or down the image (interpolation its called, although it does use processing power to interpolate),its still rendering the same number of pixels. If you changed the screen to a screen with a higher number of pixels for example then you would see a performance decrease.
Just like the 801 system on chip the G3 has. Put it in a 1080 screen phone and performance will increase. Put it in a QHD screen phone and performance will decrease.
Its got nothing to do with QHD, at least not in the 2D interface. The GPU is capable of 4k 2D rendering and even then is only limited by bandwidth, not processing power. The amount of power needed to render 2D is pretty small frankly.
The G3s issues are all about LGs optimisations, its over burdened with thermal control and battery saving measures as well as just plain old bad code. Turn a few off and it gets a lot smoother. The G2 was slow and laggy when launched, its not now.

I thought the max resolution of the 801 was 2k (2.5 really 2560 along longest side). 805 is 4k.
801-

805-
https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/805
Its bandwidth limited to just under 4k actually, so they have artificially limited it to a standard thats lower to stop OEMs using it for 4K. QHD is still about 30% lower than this artificial limitation.
Either way its not about processing power of the GPU.
I just bought Note 4 so there are still things i dont know. My previous phone was Note 2, and it had 1/8 speed recording (which i think means 240fps), but the quality was way worse than the one iphone has at 240fps. Now, using Note 4's slow motion mode i still feel that Iphone's is superior. And since I am a victim of hatred of Apple, i want to know that my precious Note 4 can outperform it in any way possible, so is there a way to record at 240fps at 720p? Note shows 720p, but by the quality i can tell that its far from truth. Also, I read that its not actually 240fps, but 120 shown at 15, which creates the illusion of 240. And my last concern is the fact, that there is no sound in slow motion.
Can we expect this to come with 5.0? Is it possible for developers to make it as a mod or smth? WILL WE EVER HAVE REAL 240FPS AT 720P???
Thanks for your time
Anyone??

It is in no way the answer i wanted, I have gone over that thread more than once before you mentioned it, and what I wanted to know were not speculations of users, but rather the opinions by developers, who know whether it is a hardware problem, or a software one. I am fully aware of the existing slowmo, which is crap. Also i know that gn4 camera is way more advanced than iphone 5, but it is way worse in slowmo, therefore i reach a conclusion, that it cannot be a hardware problem. And if it is a software problem, I wanted to know if developers could fix it, or is it only possible to be fixed by Samsung itself. How about next time you actually read through the entire question, and not only the title?
Super slow mo works better on the iPhone 6+
I have read a few reviews stating that observation.
More curious about how you area "victim" of Apple hatred??
Hi, I'm looking at this phone to potentially buy as the phone is the perfect size for me and I really like the look.I owned the z3c and loved it until I dropped it and blew the screen out. After going through an S6 and G4, I sold sold them for various issues with software and the size was still a bit large for my liking. I currently have an iPhone 6S and was surprised how fast it is and the size is really good. BUT, I prefer Android and have a warm spot for the compact line. My concern though as others I'm sure have as well is all of this talk about Sony not properly optimizing the handset and how it lags and stutters while scrolling. Seems unacceptable to release this kind of unfinished product. Seen and read videos and articles about people complaining the same things..so this is no fluke correct? I am very hesitant to buy this phone and would like to know from users their experience with software issues. I want this to be a discussion to help potential buyers like me, and I'm sure there are many concerned as I am about performance based issues before we buy. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, some users posted about faster governor scaling in this firmware. So cpu frequencys are raised more aggressively now.
My device runs a lot smoother with this update. This was the only point that I was unhappy with before the update. It is not as snappy as some other devices I had in my hand but definitely good now. Still some micro stuttering at some occasions but I am very confident that there will be much more improvement soon, especially with Android M update.
Nexus is using the same SoC on their devices, shipped with Android 6 so Sony will benefit from further updates, regarding hardware optimization.

Well, the "stutters" could be removed quite easily.
What Sony did is they decreased the sampling interval of the governor,
this leads to increased responsiveness, however it does not fight the root cause.
The device is not able to operate smoothly at the given freq threshold (960 000 kHz), and decreasing sampling time will not help to resolve this.
What Sony should've done instead is simply leaving the sampling interval and increase the freq thresholds.
I'll soon get my device rooted again and prove that with this change battery-life will not be sacraficed, but the amount of micro-stutters will be noticably reduced.
The SOC has so much potential and power-reserves, this device could perform way better with proper less-conservative tuning.
Got the phone on release and was very disappointed with all the lag and stutters. But since the latest update, everything is smooth sailing.

yea same! Got the update last night and everything seems well even the camera boots up faster!
Thanks for the good news on updates. I'm clueless as to why Sony would release an unfinished product though. Just doesn't make sense..especially in their mobile situation..baffling

I noticed a huge increase in speed when waking the camera after the update. Phone feels much snappier overall as well. Glad to see Sony doing some better optimizations.
Lag isn't gone for me, but it's substantially better. I think I'm noticing the 2gb of ram too. When streaming music and browsing photos, when I scroll through 20-25 photos the music app crashes. I have repeated this 100% of the time. Could it be running out of ram as I scroll through these high-res photos? Frustrating.

Well, the "stutters" could be removed quite easily.
What Sony did is they decreased the sampling interval of the governor,

Is there a way to report stuff like this (and other bugs) directly to the development team? Because the Sony forum (talk.sonymobile.com) seems to be used for less technical problems.

I honestly don't know, but i am in contact with Sony's community manager and can forward most stuff this way.
However i'll wait first till marshmallow drops as i don't think Sony puts in much effort in 5.1 either way (which makes sense).

any ETA? I heard it won't be ready untill the December, other rumors say only in Sprinl like with 5.o in Z3 series, and other say its gonna happen in November...
For me it's still very slow and laggy even after the latest update, it got a little better but my Z1C performed way better. I really hope marshmallow will improve this. Sometimes I'm about the break the phone in two because it's so slow!

For me it's really all over, when switching between apps mostly. But waiting for keyboard to pop up and other stuff. The animations are not slow when they do appear. I will try do do a video of it.
